Dodge Dakota owners have reported 14 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Brake and abs warning lights started coming on. . . The brake warning light should only come on when there is a problem with the braking system or if the parking brake is applied. A brake warning light when these conditions are not met is a false warning and a recall must be issued ! this occurs when the truck is in motion and will clear upon restart. A false brake warning light is worse than no light at all since if a real brake system failure does occur the drive would be unaware. This problem is widespread on most Dodge trucks.

This is in regards to a 1999 Dodge Dakota sport with a club cab. It only gets driven a few months out of the year and only has 53,000 mile on it. I drove my truck to the city transfer station on Sunday. While backing up to the dumpster my brakes let go. The abs and brake light came on and I was barley able to stop before the truck rolled into the dumpster. Upon inspection of the brake system one of the brake lines had rotted and gave way. That following Monday I took it to the repair shop. My tech showed me that every brake line under the truck was rotten and had to be replaced costing $900 plus.

- the contact' owns 1997 Dodge Dakota. The contact complained that brake warning light turned on. The contact took the vehicle to two different brake repair facilities, and both stated that the brake warning light stayed on due to the sensor, which meant that the abs were turned off. The sensor was located on the master cylinder. The contact stated that the repair facilities didn't know why the sensor was failing. When they inspected the brakes they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle. Also, the contact stated that while applying the brakes in wet conditions the vehicle had a difficulty stopping, causing it to slide.

At 65 mph using cruise control, daytime, dry pavement, good weather, brake warning light and abs warning light illuminated with warning chime. At next exit, operator took vehicle to repair shop. Technician found right front wheel bearing assembly worn, allowing tire/wheel assembly to be moved 1-2'' from vertical. Vehicle had been checked during state inspection less than 400 miles previously and passed. A total failure in traffic at speed might have resulted in a loss of handling/braking that might have caused or worsened an accident. Failed part is available. Vehicle has also suffered numerous premature failures including: failure of driver heated seat, failure of electric fuel pump, nearly causing accident due to engine stoppage and loss of power steering, failure of instrument cluster, failure of front suspension components, and damage to spare tire due to mis-routed tail pipe. Some of these are manufacturer design defects, others are troubleshooting or repair errors at dealer. Two events (fuel pump, wheel bearing) might have caused accident with injury/death possible outcome.

Cruise control would engage itself intermittently while driving at high speed. Vehicle had been to the dealer on two separate occasions, and they were unable to locate cause of the problem. Also, a loud popping sound was heard while braking. Dealer was notified. Dealer replaced both rotors and brake light 4 times due to moisture build up. However, problem recurred.
