Three problems related to engine clicking and tapping noises have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Tl- the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that after starting the ignition, a loud ticking noise was heard outside of the vehicle and smoke emitted from the air vents. The contact inspected underneath the hood and detected that the ticking noise originated from the engine compartment. In addition, the exterior of the vehicle exhibited severe rust spots and substantial cracks. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and they were unable to locate the problem. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000. Mah.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While driving 25 mph, the contact heard a clunking and creaking noise coming from the front end. He took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that there was nothing wrong. In 2002, the contact took the vehicle to a specialty alignment shop and they refused to align the vehicle because the upper and lower front control arms were worn out. The contact returned to the dealer and they replaced the upper control arm on the passenger side. However, he continues to hear the clunking and creaking sound. The current mileage was 51,800 and failure mileage was 114. The upper ball joint was bad and the 4-wheel drive stayed engaged. The engine pinged a lot. Updated 11/06/07.
While driving the oil pressure gauge would drop very low. The dealer inspected and advised that it was just an electrical problem with the gauge. While driving, the consumer heard a ticking noise coming from engine area. The vehicle was taken back to a different dealer who diagnosed that the oil pressure pump had failed and as a result the technician would need to rebuild the engine.
