While driving check engine and abs lights came on. All the gauges did not work. Vehicle shut down. After pulling to the side of the road vehicle would not start for approximately 30 minutes. After restarting there was a loud noise. Vehicle had to be towed. It was discovered that the engine was defective. Oil sludge caused premature engine failure.

3 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2004

While driving about 70 mph I heard a loud noise coming from under my 1999 Durango, I took the vehicle to a local firestone, they discovered that the drive shaft had fell from it's housing, so I then took the vehicle to a transmission shop, cottman. The shop informed me of the following, the yoke and the bolt that retained the drive shaft in the transfer case had broken off some how, due to this occurrence, the transfer case was damaged, because all of the oil leaked out. Also in 2003, had to have the ball joints replace and, also the engine head because the vehicle was burning to much oil and damage the heads.

4 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2001

Engine- loud noise, oil gauge goes to zero then engine stalls occurs 30-55mph. A/c does not cool unless on high.

5 Loud Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/05/1999

Had continous problem with the oil pressure guage flucuating, vehicle had been maintained, oil was always checked and changed when needed, told by mechanic faulty filter, said was no leaks but had to add oil at times. When it probably shouldn't have needed to, there seems to be a definite problem with this year and type of truck due to all the information found on the internet, Dodge/Chrysler should own up to their reputation and come clean, I will never buy anything that has to do with this company ever again. I was driving home with my daughter on the turnpike, the oil gauge kept dropping back and forth then all this tapping and loud noises from the engine, I pulled over and had to be towed home and was told I needed a new engine, you could see a hole, I got no satisfaction from the dealer or from the zone representative, she parroted the dealer and due to my financial status at this time I cannot afford nor do I believe I should have to put out a cent. This vehicle definitely needs to be investigated I believe it to be a lemon of a vehicle. Dt.
