The engine is misfiring when driving down the highway. I had the very same issue approximately 6 months ago. I had to have the camshaft and lifters replaced. Luckily it was covered under the warranty because the repair costed over $3000. The issue has started again and unfortunately the vehicle is no longer under warranty. I do not have $3000 to get this reoccurring problem fixed.
I have received a recall for the alternator diode thermal fatigue and still have not gotten any response to fix my vehicle. The recall for the brake booster was out September and here it is November and I have not been made aware of this recall. I found the recall on line.
Right @ about 10 miles and hour there is a cluck noise @ the rear of the truck. Dodge techs can pin point the cause. It cause some performance issue between 60 and 75. I took the truck in multiple time and they first told me it was the drive shaft. After fixing it the problem still continues. Also @120,000 I had a worn camshaft and lifters.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Durango. While at a stop light, the vehicle suddenly shut off. After restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.
When driving my car the alternator failed and started smoking without warning. The car lost all power luckily I was able to cost to safely and get off the road. My problem is I seen a recall for this very issue but my VIN was not in the recall. This is completely unacceptable as my failure was exactly what the recall is for. Not only did my alternator short out and almost catch fire it fried my pcm. Now it sits in the shop and is costing me almost $1500 to fix. How is it ok for them to only recall some cars and mine has the exact same safety recall but my VIN is not covered.
Electrical charging system light came on while driving and I noticed there was smoke coming out of the hood. Pulled into a driveway and opened the hood and the alternator was smoking. I took pictures of this which are on my phone if needed. It took out the battery as well resulting in me having to leave the vehicle there because all systems were out.
All gauges radio and lights shut off and engine acted like it was off while accelerating to speed.
On June 14, 2017 I was driving my 2011 Dodge Durango home from work and the battery light came on while I was on a busy highway. I exited the highway and pulled into a mall parking lot and suddenly the interior temperature of the car became extremely hot, so hot, I could not stay inside of the vehicle. I started to see and smell smoke, so I turned the vehicle off and opened the hood; as I it opened there was a large amount of smoke and I closed it to snuff out any fires. I had the vehicle towed to my mechanic and was told my alternator had gone bad. The explanation I was giving was: the silicone diodes in the alternator rectifier bridge may experience thermal fatigue due to cyclic loading from the electric hydraulic power steering (ehps) system, eventually resulting in no output, reduced output, or a fully shorted to ground condition. These failure modes vary in their time to failure and warning to the driver. Depending on the failure mode and timing, system voltage may drop to critically low levels, disabling systems such as the anti-lock brake system/electronic stability control, engine control module/central body controller, or a total vehicle electrical system shut down (in the event of a short to ground failure mode). I experienced a total system shut down. The alternator not only failed but shorted out my battery, fuses and computer module. I called Dodge corporate and only received an apology. . . . Dodge has a recall p60 recall which applies to 160amp alternator. This recall was not applicable to my vehicle because it has a 180 or 220 amp alternator but if it is failing like the 160amp alternator then Dodge should be responsible for the defective part.
May 2017 my daughter was driving her 2011 Dodge Durango with 68k with two kids in the car, the battery light came on and then went completely dead shortly after. We got it to an electrical shop to find the battery was dead and the 180 amp alternator had stopped operating. After some researching I found a recall (p60) and it only applied to 160 amp alternator. I called Chrysler (case #31556595) to see if they could help and was denied. We had to pay for the repair which cost me $400. 44. I feel this is a safety issue that should be included in the recall.
My battery light came on while driving. I was driving 65 mph down rt 18 north in the colts neck area of NJ. Within 10 minutes after the battery light came on, my car acted possessed. The steering locked, brakes locked, wipers came on moving slowly, the heat came on, abs brakes light came on, and the park assist came on. Luckily there were no cars directly around me and I was able to drift to the shoulder of the road where my car completely shut down and stopped on its own. The 180 amp alternator went and also fried my pcm. I am currently paying over $200 to rent a car. I am being told my bill will be about $2000 to replace the alternator and pcm. This is a very unsafe and a dangerous issue that should be recalled as the 160 amp alternator is already recalled for the same issues. Driving at a highway speed and your car suddenly completely shuts down can cause a serious crash. This is the 3rd major issue I've ran into as I also had my battery dying multiple times due to the fuel pump relay recall. Also, I lost my brakes suddenly and had to avoid an accident due to the brake booster failure recall. I do not think I will ever buy a Dodge again as they do not take responsibility for issues. I feel as though this vehicle isn't safe to drive.
In the past 6 months I have paid over $3500 in repairs on the Dodge Durango. I was told and had to replace both catalyst converters and all 4 O2 sensors. Then the starter went out causing me to replace it. Now for the 3rd time in 3 weeks, I had to have my vehicle towed and now it appears the issue may be the alternator. I noticed there was a recall for 2011 Dodge Durango 3. 6l, 160 amp alternators and I am not sure what amp my alternator is but my vehicle appears to have all the same issues as the vehicles that were under the recall, yet my vehicle is not included in the recall? I have been inconvenienced for 3 weeks now having to get rides to and from work and have had to cancel doctor appointments and school meetings due to the fact that both my husband and I need a vehicle and are having to share 1 vehicle with 5 kids. Our most recent issue occurred on easter Sunday while traveling with all our children, the battery signal appeared on our vehicle began smoking from under the hood. To avoid injury, we have had it towed to the Dodge dealership again for review. We have had 2 diagnostic checks going on a 3rd and no one is catching all the repeated issues. We have to replace the catalyst converter 2 times (November 2016 and April 2017), O2 sensors (November 2016), battery (January 2017), starter (April 2017) and now our newest issue has yet to be revealed but it appears it will be the alternator (April 2017). At what point will Chrysler take full responsibility for all the issues with the 2011 Dodge Durango. Reimbursement for all we have had to pay for faulty issues with the 2011 Dodge Durango would be appreciated. All these issues developed after the faulty tipm that we have paid out of pocket for 2x as well.
Very unclear how my Durango was not included in the mass recall of alternators that immediately stop working and start to burn. Mine did just this, stopping my vehicle in the middle of traffic and almost causing an accident. I also smelled burning and there was smoke coming from the engine. It was towed to a nearby auto shop whereupon the alternator was replaced but the vehicle still did not operate. It was then towed to ganley Chrysler Dodge and that alternator removed and another put in. The vehicle also incurred costly repairs to the computer (pcm) system failing due to the alternator. I do not feel this is a normal wear and tear issue at 85k miles. I have called Chrysler and they refuse to assist, claiming I should not have had it repaired before calling them. The dealership never gave me an indication that I should proceed this way.
This is the 3rd time since August 2016- so 3 to 4 months timeframe- my Dodge Durango has died on me while driving. This means a complete loss of steering, lights, power, the vehicle is completely dead. This is a safety issue. I can barely make it to the side of the road without crashing. An investigation needs to be opened up regarding this. They have recalls against the alternator but are not honoring them.
On no 1, 2016 when I was going at work, I was driving on west park hwy (houston, TX), and suddenly my car stopped working in the middle of the road, all the system has stopped working, and the front car started smoking (burn, & fire). And I survived by the grace of god. I call the towing services so as to move the car from the hwy to my house. And I can't really tell you what exactly happened. But the constancy is, my car is not drivable until now. And my insurance company sent some expert so as to assess the risk, and they told me what happened is the defect of the constructor (Chrysler group llc), because there are more than 300 hundred cases of complaints similar with my explanations. And from this day to now, I am traumatized by this incident. It is the reason that I am writing to you so as to solve this hazard or main issue. And actually my car is parked at home (15770 bellaire blvd, #2107, houston, tx77083). My insurance claim number state farm: 53-0079-5s5. N. B. : I also attached the towing receipt issued by the towing services.
I was at the mall pulled into parking lot smelled a burning smell so I turned off engine and opened hood smoke started coming out no fire though tried to start vehicle again car completely dead. So had car towed of course was in parking structure and structure was so small no tow truck could fit inside so had to call a mobile mechanic to come out and he bypassed something to get car started drove car to outside parking lot so car could be towed. Mechanic said alternator and battery fried. So replaced them. Come to find out that pcm was also fried so need new brain for car! looked on website Dodge/cryseler have recall on alternator. . . . You guessed it not on my vehicle though!! there is a recall on 2011 Dodge Durango alternators but not on mine yet my alternator goes out for no apparent reason!! ridiculous.
Vehicle in motion traveling at 65 mph. Vehicle lost all engine and electrical power. No lights or indicators on dashboard. No power steering. Limited braking power. Coasted the vehicle out of traffic to the shoulder of the road. Shifted vehicle into park and waited 5 minutes. After 5 minutes electrical power returned and was able to start vehicle and drive it home. Found complaints online of similar problems.
2011 Dodge Durango recall# 14v634000, electrical system, alternator. The truck was in motion on a busy city street and stopped abruptly. The entire computer system went out, causing the alternator, and the battery to be disabled. Dodge refused to reimburse for the 2k we paid in repairs.
I had a battery light in the morning, but my battery was new. As I was driving my air conditioning stopped working, my radio screen flashed, went off and the entire car died while in motion, I barely stopped in time. The engine wouldn't even try, and me and my two infant children were stranded in the middle of a busy street in 100° heat. The police officer had to help us, we called a tow truck to take us home. The mechanic who looked at the car said the alternator internally grounded and fried the computer and the battery and explains the burning smell just prior to the car dying.
Alternator failed over heating electrical wiring and causing battery and computer chip failure. The problem occurred on the road but I was able to make it to a parking lot. I did smell smoke and felt heat but there was no ignition of fire. My car was completely disabled. No electrical activity. The symptoms are the same as recall #14v634000.
The vehicle loses power, engin shuts off while driving for no explainable reason.
Local auto repair shop tested tipm and other parts and found nothing but I'm still having an issue starting my car when my vehicle sits longer than 5 hours. I am not able to afford new tipm for $1200. I understand tipm issue is pending class action settlement. I would like to Dodge dealer to provide a significant discount so that I can replace tipm of my vehicle.
The car will crank but will not start. When pressing the push to start button it turns over like its going to start but will not start. After taking it to the dealership for recall work it has the same re-occuring issue. Dodge says that it was fixed but I now have to take it to an independant repair shop to pay out of pocket for a known issue with this vehicle. This is a common problem with this make and model and should be paid for and fixed by mopar and not the customer!.
My 2011 Dodge Durango crew says key no detected when I attempt to start the vehicle. I thought it was the battery in the key fob because the vehicle stated low key battery and took the fob to battery's plus. They tested the key fob and stated the battery was fine and didn't need to be replaced. Also the drivers side head and brake lights go out.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Durango. The contact received NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the battery warning light illuminated and smoke was emitting from under the hood of the vehicle. After shutting the vehicle off, it failed to restart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000.
The very first time was when I was slowing down from about 50mph at a corner in order to take a right hand turn, about halfway through the 90° corner I feel that the steering has stiffened. Looking down, I see that the tachometer now reads 0, and the engine has died. I cannot simply slip it into neutral and then restart it because of the car has a keyless pushbutton and the start button only works with the drive in park. I then have to armstrong it through the rest of the corner. As I finish up the turn to where I can safely stop and restart, I then push the brakes only to find that they are now totally stiff because there is now no vacuum left to assist. I end up costing to a stop. The car always restarts without any problem. This problem has persisted and has happened at least 20 times since. It is always is when slowing down from anywhere from 60 to 30 mph and beginning to take a right turn. I have never seen this happen when doing a left, but there are not to many chances to duplicate this scenario doing a left. We had the one recall for the fuel pump done so that should not be it. We have complained about this to numerous Dodge dealers and they have done nothing. One service writer said that he knew of the problem, knew that the fuel pump recall was not fixing it and that there was going to be another recall to fix the problem. When this happens unexpectedly as you are going 25 mph in a traffic roundabout, it is all you can do to try to steer through the rest of the traffic circle, only to find that your power brakes are failed as you try to stop to restart. This is a very serious defect that needs immediate attention, someone is going to be killed with this happening, either the occupants of the car, or the public. We also have a 2011 Jeep grand cherokee and it is doing the exact same thing, but more because it is driven more.
While driving at a constant speed of 25, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, lurching forward, then backed off, then accelerated again. It did this a number of times that day. I pulled off the road and stopped until the vehicle quit trying to accelerate. I was driving on snow/ice and it scared the heck out of me; I was lucky not to wreck because I hit the brakes to counter the sudden acceleration which caused me to slide. The vehicle did the same thing the next day while traveling at a constant speed of 45, and again on February 24th and today, February 25th. Yesterday, February 24th, it did it while in heavily congested traffic while driving about 15 mph. The sudden acceleration startled me because it lurched me toward the vehicle in front of me and I had to slam on my brakes.
While driving heard low moaning sound, 5 minutes later (still driving) battery light came on. I decided to take vehicle to auto parts store because it was late afternoon (~7:45pm) to see if my need was a battery. I asked technician to come and see if it was my battery or alternator, as I opened vehicle door to pop the hood, the SUV was filled with smoke. The techs scurried to open the hood and waived smoke in attempt to remove the battery cable to disconnect power. I was rushing to get child out of car, because smoke was bellowing from underneath the hood. After technician removed the power cable from the stud under the hood, the fire and smoke from the alternator slowed and eventually went out. I called insurance company and had vehicle towed to dealer. Had I parked the vehicle in the garage for the night and sought support the following morning, I was informed that my 2011 Dodge Durango could have potentially caught fire in my garage, because power was continually being supplied to the alternator (over powering it). This is a serious, potential fatal system failure and needs immediate attention! dealer confirmed the failed alternator and is charging me $855 dollars, and required prompting to engage discussion on possible recall. Dealer claimed no recall has been formalized. Due to my disbelief that Dodge was unaware of this problem and persistence in questioning other potential customer complaints, the dealer began to advise that this was a previously known problem with "Chrysler" that is being fixed by refurbishing alternators and selling them back to the dealer for $500. Dealer also stated the I could request repayment for my services once a formal recall disclosure was submitted to consumers. I am furious to see that that is in fact a formal recall; NHTSA campaign number 14v634000.

1st time: car would not start after getting gas, I was rving car just fine before this occurred. Went to start car, did not turn over, tried again push the start button and car kept trying to turn over with no luck, I let the car sit for a few minutes and tried again, it started. Day two, started car just kept turning over had to press "stop" tried again and it started.
Vehicle engine would start with use of ignition button, then vehicle engine would shut off with out warning. At this time vehicle will not re-start with use of ignition button. Vehicle would just engage starter motor and not fire engine with use of ignition button. Starter would run on until button is pushed to engage the off position, with a no start condition. After several cycles of the ignition button vehicle engine will finally start and stay running. Problem is reoccurring often. This is absolutely unexceptable for any vehicle and the safety of its occupants. This can lead to loss off control of vehicle, possible collision and loss of life, at high speeds on the crowded interstates, or moderate speeds on small town streets.
When starting the car, it acts as if it is going to start and continues to turn over then shuts off. We were able to get it home after several attempts to start it. The following day it started up as normal. I drove it to run errands around town. The following day I loaded up my two sons, ages 3 and 10 weeks in the car and the car wouldn't start again. I let it sit and the following day it shuddered and shut off twice before just acting like it was going to turn over while the red lightening bolt flashes on the dash. Now it wont start at all. The dealership stated I have to pay out of pocket to fix it because the recall isn't out yet. They also refused to pay for a rental. They know this is an issue and still refuse to do anything about it. What if I had my two kids in the car and was stranded somewhere? they just don't care. I don't have the money to pay for everything up front and wait to be reimbursed once the recall comes out. Now I'm stranded without a vehicle for god knows how long. This is crap!!.
I had to have the tipm replaced because the vehicle would not start.
Received 2 recall notices for problem with fuel pump relay. Engine could quit at any time. Went to bob lamphere's newberg Dodge after receiving notices. Was told parts would be in after 2 weeks. This info was provided on July 21, 2014. I would be notified when to bring in the car for warranty work. On may 5, 2015 I was informed that the parts are in and need an appointment. Nothing happened until I called chrsyler in michigan and they were at a loss as to why the warranty hasn't done. My opinion, newberg Dodge just forgot the warranty work until chrysled called them. I am waiting for some one from chrsyler to call and work out a schedule to repair the fuel pump relay. Safety recall p54 / NHTSA 14v-530. Terry will woodburn, oregon 503-981-1724.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start when the push button start was depressed. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
