On February 6, 2026, while driving my 2014 Dodge Durango at normal speed, the driver’s seat headrest suddenly and unexpectedly deployed/exploded, striking the back of my head. The force of the impact caused my head to snap forward, resulting in soft-tissue and muscle injuries to my neck and upper back. I sought medical evaluation following the incident and was diagnosed with soft-tissue injury/whiplash. Treatment has included diagnostic imaging, prescription medication, and follow-up care for ongoing symptoms. I was able to continue driving the vehicle directly to a Dodge dealership, where staff confirmed that the headrest had exploded. This is the second headrest failure on this vehicle caused by a defective plastic component; the passenger-side headrest failed previously in August 2023. The vehicle is unsafe to operate until the headrest is replaced. Due to the part being out of stock, the repair is expected to take more than two months. Prior to this incident, the only indication of a problem was a letter sent by Dodge in August 2020 stating that the warranty on this part was extended from 3 years to 10 years due to a known defect. Given the repeated failures and risk of injury, this condition represents a safety defect that should have been addressed through a recall.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the headrest randomly deployed well car was in park. All I did was sit in my seat. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? my safety was put at risk because now I have a sore neck and migraine from something meant to keep me safe but instead jeopardized my safety. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I will be calling as soon as they open. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? calling as soon as they open. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no warnings at all.
While stopped at a stop sign, the passenger headrest airbag deployed.
The active headrest failed. It is a safety issue due to it failing out of nowhere with no signs of an issue. It broke free and pushed my head forward aggressively causing neck pain. I am a licensed mechanic and verified the cause of failure.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed low speed through a parking area, the passenger's side seat headrest deployed inadvertently and hit the passenger in the back of the head. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by a dealer or an independent mechanic. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Chrysler campaign number: x88. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
I was driving and the passenger active headrest exploded randomly without any impacts happening.
A light was coming on and off shortly after my husband and I purchase the vehicle from landers in covington TN. On 10/24/24 I showed the manger of store aj. And he advise me to make sure I address this with the service department. Misty was the lady that did my oil change and tire rotation that day. I showed her the picture, she couldn't tell me what it meant, but she started that it was probably a dirty sensor. My husband was involved in a car accident on [xxx]. He left the road way due to a deer striking a light pole. Our biggest concern is when he first hit a driveway culvert the emergency breaking did not engage and after striking the light pole. Not one air bag deploy, which could have resulted in less injuries to him. And this is the 2nd crash this vehicle has been in. The first one is when I struck a deer head on. And again the emergency braking did not engage. And from the body shop that repaired that I quote " the air bags should have deployed since you hit the deer head on" information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Passenger seat headrest popped out for no reason. Got a headache from it cause of the impact it caused. Was only driving in my neighborhood at 25mph. No accident occurred.
My system keeps saying my seat needs serviced for airbag system. Something electric is burning and something is happening with my radio system. It keeps changing to different stations or settings while music is playing.
Passenger seat, headrest exploded part of cars, active restraint system, hitting my son in the head.
Head rest on driver side with air bag started coming apart for no reason. I don’t see a recall also, water keeps poking into rear tail light. No matter how many times I’ve drained it. I’ve heard this issue is called vehicle fires due to water getting into the electrical. I don’t want my vehicle to catch on fire with me or my grandkids inside. There is zero recalls and thousands of complaint regarding this issue. Dodge really need to do something about this before someone loses their life.
Passenger headrest airbag deployed while car was stationary in garage. My daughter was hit sharply by deployed airbag. Has not yet been inspected, but is available for inspection. No warning this would happen.
The drivers headrest deployed without any impact, while sitting idly.
While driving down the road the passengers headrest exploded and now I can’t get it to close back. Almost caused an accident.
Sitting at the light and driver side active head restraint deployed into my head.
The driver side headrest "deployed" and pushed the headrest to the back of my head. I was sitting in the driver seat and the vehicle was parked, and when I moved a bag from the front passenger seat to the middle row, the driver side headrest opened on it's own. I cannot compress the headrest together. My concern is this was a faulty safety deployment.
Passenger side active headrest deployed without accident while sitting in driveway no one in or around vehicle and also not running.
Srs system light came on. Air bags will not work when this light is on. Safety hazard.

Drivers seatbelt buckle does not register, resulting in active chiming of the unbuckled seat belt alarm and disengaging of the airbag system. Driver must hold the seatbelt with downward pressure continuously in order to register the seat belt and return the vehicle to normal operating condition, and turn off the airbag system warning signs and chiming. Dealership refuses any assistance without payment despite being a vehicle safety system.
The car has no accidents but the air bag light and start/stop unavailable light turned on.

The passenger head restraint deployed while driving on a smooth road at about 30 mph. No crash or unusual road conditions.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, another vehicle abruptly merged into his lane in front of him, prompting him to rapidly decrease speeds. However, the vehicle ahead was too close; as a result, the contact collided with the rear of the other vehicle, forcing his vehicle to careen to the shoulder of the roadway before coming to a complete stop. The air bags did not deploy. The air bag warning light was illuminated. A police report was filed, and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15v313000 (air bags); the VIN was included, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 231,000.

Air bag stating it needs serviced the light will come on periodically it is not present every-time vehicle is driven.
My fairly new teen driver drove the car to the gym and the headrest basically “exploded” onto the back of his head with a swift blow. He had a very bad headache and was really freaked out. There were no lights, no notice, no impact. Just out of the blue drivers side. Called local dealership to see what it could be and apparently the pin can break or the plastic holding the pin and the airbag restraint type system in the headrest will just explode open as if in an accident. He said no recalls and out of warranty. How can this not be a serious safety issue??? my inexperienced teen driver could have been so stunned he caused an accident! anyways they said it would be roughly $1100 to replace entire headrest because there is no option to repair it once deployed. Can we still drive it? if we don’t have that $ now.
I had a car accident on 1/29/24 . Regarding to my car damages . Airbags did not deploy during the accident. I believe my speed was 29-35 mph typically airbags deploy when the crash is the equivalent of an impact into a rigid wall at 10-12 mph. Is anything we can do here please? wasn’t my fault another car moved on the red light during intersection and mine was green and hit my car . I went to er & I did a mri and my doctor said I have serious issues with my back & neck now & I’ll need several surgeries , thanks and have a great day!.
The contact owns a 2021 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while her mother was driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle crashed into another vehicle that had slammed on brakes. The contact stated that the proceeding vehicle then crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact stated that her mother was involved in a four-car pileup. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a lot. The contact's mother sustained arm and neck inquires. Medical attention was needed. The contact's mother received medical attention. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 57,000.
Passenger side front headrest airbag deployed without incident. There were no warning lights, messages or symptoms prior to deployment. The vehicle was inspected and certified upon purchase. This could have caused injury to myself or my children. My biggest concern is the same incident happening without warning to the driver’s side while I’m driving and causing an accident which results in injury or worse, death of myself or children. This is a problem.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v352000 (air bag) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available.
