2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2021

Battery light turned on and vehicle immediately shut off. Got car jump to make it home and all electrical components went hay wire - all dash lights blinking - transmission wouldn’t not shit and accelerated by itself, headlights wouldn’t go on, windows wouldn’t go down. Dodge recalled every other car model in their line for a bad alternator rapid failure, except caravan, which should absolutely be included. It’s a know issue - car shouldn’t be dying while driving with under 100k miles.

Vehicle will turn over but not start and other times it will finally start but then will die right away. We have tried everything under the stars to fix it and its getting to the point that we don't know what to do. Our battery and alternator are good everything else works just fine. Failure Date: 11/01/2018

There are two facets of this issue. First issue: it began starting hard back in November it would crank but not turn over and start. It will often leave us stranded myself and young children for 20-45 minutes waiting for it to start. Second issue: the fuel pump will remain running when vehicle is shut off and continue to run till battery is dead. Alternator has been replaced in past year and has been tested to be good, battery had to be replaced twice in two years. When diagnosed by a Dodge dealership the issue is said to be a power distribution module which costs $1,008. 00 not including labor. The part is ordered but on national backorder with no estimated time of arrival.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2018

My van has had electrical type issues since we purchased it, but in the last couple years they have imagnified. Every issue starts with the car smoking and some sort of light coming on (engine, battery etc. . ) many times I take it in and the dash light is no longer illuminated or they can not find anything wrong with it and reset the electrical panel. I have replaced the battery numerous times, alternator three times (last time it was completely burnt out and the time before it was completely melted). Transmission lines and coolant lines. The last time my headlights were replaced the wires were charred and frayed. Last night my son was pulled over by the police because the officer noticed the car was smoking. He popped the hood to let the smoke clear (my son said the smoke had a copery taste). After it cleared the van started and drove fine. This is after having the alternator replaced (for the third time) just last week. The technicians at the shop have never seen these kinds of problems before and the guy at interstate battery said he has never seen a car deplete a battery like mine does. With all these issue being associated with the words melting, charring, smoking, it really concerns me that one day my van is going to catch on fire or blow up and this is not normal for any vehicle, but especially one that has been taken care of and maintained. I have friends with the same van and similar mileage (155,000) and they have not had any of these issues. I contacted Dodge who referred me to the NHTSA and the local dealership. Please help!!!.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2018

The van's engine shutdown while my wife was driving the van at night and barely had enough time to pull to the side of the road before losing control of steering. She had just made a right turn onto the highway. Towed the van to a local dealer and found the issue to be the diode on the alternator failing causing electrical feedback to the powertrain control module (pcm). So had to spend a lot of money to have the alternator and pcm replaced. I am aware other vehicle lines of 2011 have a recall for this specific issue and am unsure why the Dodge Grand Caravan is not on the list. There needs to be an investigation and have this vehicle added to the recall.

11 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2018

Vehicle died suddenly on the road on April 13, 2018 due to alternator failing. O'reilly auto parts confirmed that the diodes failed on alternator. Existing recall on the durangos, Chrysler, and jeeps but not Grand Caravan for this particular problem with alternators. Burning smell under the hood of the vehicle coming from the alternator as well.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2018

I started having electrical issues with my 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan last year around 107k miles. Started with needing a new alternator & battery, van wouldn't start. Two months later, the van isn't starting again and the mechanic recommended to replace the fuel pump which I did. It was still not starting and they found that the tipm went out and I fully believe this should be recalled. Very disappointed in the lack of recalls for the Grand Caravans when the same year of durganos and jeeps are being recalled for the same thing!.

13 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2017

Tire pressure sensor light is always on, fuel pump runs after the vehicle is shut off, automatic rear doors open and close intermittently with out the push of the buttons. We have had to replace 4 batteries and 3 alternators, every time the dealership tells us this is a common issue with the tipm. Previously we have also replaced the transmission and the engine has needed repairs. Engine repairs were covered under a recall but not the transmission.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2016

We have had our van now for almost 2 years with no problems. In mid-August, my wife was taking my daughter to marching band practice at 5 am. She told me that as she was going through an intersection, it just stalled on her. Thankfully, it was only 5 am and not during rush hour. Being the skeptical guy I am, I though maybe she had hit the key somehow and shut it down. Then it happened to me and I was nearly rear-ended. I checked it out and didn't find anything, but from that day forth, it became hard to start at random times. Sometimes when we turn the key, the ignition will crank, but the engine won't start and we'll have to turn the key off to make it stop turning over. Other times, it will attempt to start, or even start, then immediately stall. Eventually, and sometimes after 8-10 attempts, it will start and run until the next time we park it. Ever since I checked it out, I have noticed that, at times, you can't hear the hum of the fuel pump when you turn the key, while other times it doesn't seem to stop making noise. Just this morning, I left to go to work, only to find that the van won't start. Apparently, one of the other obvious signs of a bad tipm is the occasional dead battery. . . . Caused by a fuel pump that the tipm fuel relay fails to shut off. At this point, my van has been sitting since October of 2016, as we cannot afford the high repair cost. The repair estimate that I was quoted for the tipm will cost around $1100. Had this been taken care of by Chrysler, I may have saved what I spent on batteries and the alternator.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan. While driving approximately 30 mph, the engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The mechanic stated that the failure was contributed to the alternator. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the alternator was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,912.

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2016

In June 2013 we had to replace the battery and alternator. Now in Jan 2016 we had to replace the battery again and after running diagnostic we found out the the tipm needs to be replaced. The vehicle will try to crank however it will not always turn over.

17 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

In the year that I have owned my van, it has exhibited multiple problems, that I thought were different issue, but I now find are all related to a defect in the tipm. Sporadically, whether vehicle was cold, or not, I would put the key in to start it and nothing would happen. No sound, as if the battery was completely dead. I could shift the car out of park, put it back in park, and the car would start. The next symptom that exhibited was that I would try to start the car and it would turn over, but sound as if it was out of gas. It would eventually start. Finally it got to the point that it wouldn't start at all. Testing showed that the battery was dead. It was recharged and the vehicle driven and tested to determine that the battery was holding a charge, and that the alternator was not the issue. Through different testing it was determined that the issue with tipm. The fact that I am going to be tasked with a $1500 repair on a car that I still owe $14,000 on is ridicuous. Called the dealership to see if there was any chance that they might be acknowledging this issue and fix it. The asst. Manager stopped just short of laughing at me. . Read more...

18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2015

First I was told it was the battery then it was the alternator then it was the key fob. After all these repairs the Dodge dealership says now it's the timp module. This van only has 65000 miles. I have seen hundreds of complaints about the very same issues for customers with the same type vehicles. I have also seen the lawsuit and recall for defective timp from 2013 and 2014. My vehicle is one that was listed as an addendum lawsuit that may be affected by this module. This vehicle was purchased in florida in 2012.

19 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2014

After being told by the dealer our van wouldn't start due to the alternator, we decided to have the alternator looked at. The other mechanic found nothing to be wrong with the alternator. The dealer also said we needed our fuel pump replaced. We have had other vehicles that needed fuel pumps replaced and when the fuel pump went out we were not able to drive it at all. My husband was at an appointment and after turning off van he heard something running. The sound was tracked to the fuel pump. So the dealer wasted our time and money all the time trying to have us replace parts that would not have corrected the problem. After calling and trying to get a fuel pump regulator we discovered the fuel pump regulator is built into the tipm. We have a faulty tipm. I wish Dodge would get off their butt and issue a recall already. The only way a can shut the fuel pump off is to unhook the battery.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2014

The charge light came on. Shut the engine off. Restarted engine and the charger light, traction control lights came on. Tried driving and the engine would not shift out of 1st gear. Took the van to the Dodge dealer and they told me the alternator needed to be replaced.

21 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

Driving on highway at 70 mph. Charging light came on. Tested at parts store and problem identified as alternator. Only aftermarket available was a mopar and cost $400. Fell this is a design flaw as the car is only 3 years old with 60k miles.

22 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

Well from the time I purchased the car I told the dealer about the ignition. The car speeding off while I'm driving in a regular street or highway. The warning lights doesn't warn . Enough is enough. Riding in the car in street yesterday once again the steering wheel locked in me in traffic and it shut down. No warning. So dangerous. There is no way there should be so many complaints about the same issues and they not have a recall and repairs . My alternator actually fried and we could have been killed along with my children!!!! I'm scared. Im paying $500. 00 dollars a month for a vehicle that is sitting and I can't drive. Please give hello me to get justice.
