1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2007

6 weeks ago, I started hearing a slight ticking noise. I immediately scheduled my oil to be changed the next day at a dealership, as always. On Nov 4, I was on my way to a meeting, my engine light came on while sitting at a stop light next to a gas station. . . I pulled in and shut my car off. I checked my oil and it was a little low, I added enough oil to bring it back up to the max line and the engine light went off. I drove about a mile and half up the rode when I all the sudden heard a loud bang and very loud fast ticking. I pulled over and had my vehicle towed to a dealership where it is still sitting unfixed. Chrysler will not cover this under my warranty even though they are very well aware of this problem in the 2. 7l engine. I have always had very positive feelings about Chrysler and now I don't know what to think. They need to make this right to me and I can't even get them to listen to anything. . . They are so incredibly cold hearted and really truly don't care at all. I still owe $5,000 on this car and can't drive it. The dealership is telling me it is going to be close to $8,000 to fix. The dealership is also telling me this is a big problem with the 2. 7l engine. The engine builds up oil sludge and can't circulate causing a lack of lubrication. He said Chrysler is very aware of this and is not helping anyone in this situation. They actually quit making this engine due to the problems and have now redesigned the 2. 7l to put it in the 2008's again.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2007

There was a tapping noise coming from the engine of the 2001 Intrepid, after which the engine light came on. Five minutes later the tapping became more intense. We stopped at a traffic light and the oil light came on and the car stalled. We drove it a few feet into a parking lot, and after that, the car was history. We had it towed to a service center, where they told us the engine had blown, and the car needed a new engine. All this happened within a time frame of about 10 minutes. We thank god we had just exited the NJ turnpike and were on a country road. We could have all been killed.

8 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2006

In February of 2006 we purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid for our daughter to drive. In may of 2006 she was driving the Intrepid south on us-131 just past the I-94 exchange when the engine started knocking. The oil light or check engine lights never came on. The car slowed down and came to a stop. Thank god she was able to get the car over to the shoulder of the road safely before the engine quit. So after a $192. 00 towing bill and being told the car was a piece of junk, we are making payments on a $5,000. Dead horse in our driveway.

9 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2004

I bought Dodge Intrepid 2001 se 2. 7 l from the local auction with only 53000 miles on the odometer. As I was driving back from the auction, I heard tapping noise from the engine. I stopped and opened the hood and found that engine was low on the oil, I decide to add one quart of engine oil until I was close to the auto mechanic shop. After getting to his shop and opening up the engine we found that there was little oil but mostly sludge that prevented the engine from lubrication. The noise was really loud that had damaged some internal parts (broke crank shaft) too. Anyway the engine was gone, we decided to put another engine from the junk yard, which coasted over two thousand dollars and installation was about one thousand . Now, I have only driven 1000 miles on the new engine and there is engine light on again. I hope it is not the beginning of same issue. The car has already coasted me almost seven thousand dollars and not to mention time in the shop and frustration. I want to warn every one to stay away from Intrepid and any 2. 7 l Dodge engines. Researching on Chrysler's web site and edmunds now I see lots of people have same issues but no solution. I hope company claims responsibility of poor design and issue a recall. Regards, pulkit kapila .

Check engine light came on and took it to auto shop they said it was because of the gas cap being loose. After purchasing a new gas cap the check engine light came on again within a couple of days. Recently car would not start had towed to two places then to dealer who said the timeing jumps and there was sluge in the engine quoted a price of 7000+ for repairs the engine needed to be flush and rebuilt.

12 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2004

No warning--other than a problem with the heat that we didn't realize was related until after. As my husband was driving the car home, the engine light came on and the engine immediately died, in traffic. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic, who informed us that the car had an engine sludge problem, like many other Intrepids he had seen, and it would cost us roughly $6,000 to replace it. The car is currently sitting at the mechanic's because we don't have an extra six grand laying around, so it is intact in it's unrepaired state. I feel it could have been a horrible nightmare had traffic been heavier and one of my kids had been driving. This is a real personal injury disaster waiting to happen to other Intrepid owners.

13 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2003

While driving 70 mph the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the technician noticed that the rod sheared off and needed to be replaced.

14 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2003

No oil or engine light. One day engine starting making a loud racket. Took to dealership they said it spun a bearing due to oil sludge or no oil. I had the oil changed regulary at wal-mart and superlube since I couldn't get unde the car to change the oil myself. Car had 80,000 miles when this happened. Now it just sits in the driveway because we can't afford a 6500. 00 bill to replace motor and to top it all off we still have 2 years to pay on it. Something needs to be done about this. There are too many complaints about the same thing for Dodge just to ignore.

15 Check Engine Light On problem

17 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2002

Car would vibrate and sputter then the check engine light would come on at 50 mph. First time to the dealership - they put dry gas in the tank (Dec/2002) second time to the dealership - they put fuel injector cleaner in the tank (Jan. /2003) third time to the dealership - they replaced the #4 fuel injector (Jan. 2003) fourth time to the delaership - they replaced the computer module (Feb. /2003) fifth time to the dealership - did not fix, cleared the error codes. (Feb. 2003) dealership said that there would be a recal notice sent sometime in March/2003 something about a carbon build up in the cylinders. They told me to keep drivng it until the recall notice comes out, but the car still has the same problem. (engine only has 19,700 miles on it, under 18,500 when it first went in).

18 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2002

2000 Dodge engine failure: at 55,000 miles my 2000 Dodge Intrepid threw a lower rod as I was exiting the expressway after driving approx 10-12 miles. The car is in excellent shape and has an oil change evey 3,000 miles. I had just had an oil change approx 1,000 miles before this happened. I called daimerchrysler and asked them if there was anything that they could assist with etc? they asked if the dealer had torn down the engine. I told them that I had a private diagnosis and the dealer had a tech listen to it and said they were sure a rod had gone bad. They saad to have the dealer tear it down . . . They then tried to blame me for not getting the oil changed on a regular basis. I again told them that it had been changed every 3,000 miles and that I own two other cars (95 sillouttte & 97 cutlass) that have 130,000+ miles on them. I took the car to the dealer and paid them 250. 00 for a teardown. The dealer (genesee valley Dodge in flint, mi) called me and terry schefke (service manager) called to say that it had indeed thrown a rod and that I would need a new short block at a cost of $4. 250. 00. I again contacted Dodge by phone and email. They said that it was my problem because it was out of warranty (3/36). I asked them if an engine failure was normal at 55k? the dealer had his district manager look at the car and I was denied any assistance or compensation. I feel that the engine failure was not at all my fault, I never did get a check engine light or any other warning unti I exited the expressway (I do not speed and have never had a speeding ticket in 25 years of driving) to make matter worse I have to have the dealer reapir the engine because my lease is up omn 3/3/03. I have been online researching the 2. . Read more...
