I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. Recently, while driving on interstate 70 the car's engine made a loud noise and then suddenly died. I was barely able to escape being struck by other cars as I steered onto an exit ramp. Our local Dodge dealership diagnosed the engine trouble as oil sludge requiring a new engine. We change our oil regularly. This is a well documented problem with the Chrysler 2. 7 l engine. . Read more...
Backing out of driveway my 01 Dodge Intrepid made an awful noise and quit after being towed to the dealership we are told the timing chain broke and we would have to have another engine. . . . $6,000 - $8,000,just for the engine from Chrysler while still making payments on the car I am currently in search of a replacement engine that doesn't cost more than the car is worth.
While driving my car home from work it started making a loud noise, once I got it home into the drive it stopped running. Had I been on the highway this could have caused an accident but lucky for me I don't live more than 5 miles from where I work. I had it towed to a mechanic where they said that the is sludge build up and that the timing chain had broken which had blown up the engine. They mechanic said this is a common occurrence with these cars and I paid him $2,000 down to start working on the car. My fiend suggested that I contact the Chrysler company and I opened a complaint with them. They said I needed to have the work done by one of their certified mechanics, I told him that I had already started the work at another company. They refuse to help with any of the costs unless I have the car towed to one of their companies where I would have to pay the original mechanic over a $1,000 to replace the old engine and cancel the order of the new one. I had called the dealership prior to all of this and because the car's warranty had expired they offered no help.
Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid with a v6 2. 7 ltr engine begin to make extremely loud noises, coming from the engine. We managed to drive it at low speed for about 5 miles, since it seemed to have no power, to our local Dodge dealership. We were told the next day the engine was blown and needed replaced at a cost of approximately $6000 plus PA taxes. We have not yet made a decision as to what to do. We contacted Chrysler through its 800 customer service number. They have refused to help in any way, citing lack of service records before our purchase of the car as a used vehicle on October 16, 2004. We indicated that lack of service records do not indicate the car was not serviced since not all owners use the Dodge and Chrysler dealerships for service. We called customer service twice and had the same response twice. We are now faced with deciding what to do with the car. We had since learned that engine failure is a problem in these cars and that Chrysler has basically told its customers to go "pound sand". We also are the original owners of a 1997 Dodge grand caravan and thought that our good experience with it and service record with the local Dodge dealership where we purchased it might help in getting Chrysler to help us. The Intrepid had been towed to the same dealership only five days earlier on April 14, 2005. The next day the dealer replaced the camshaft and crankshaft sensors with no indication to us that there was anything else wrong with the car. Prior to this, since the Intrepid's purchase in October 2004, we had two incidents where the oil light came on at a stop sign or red light. Both times, this problem was fixed by our local Dodge dealership with no indication that there was any other or possible further problem. We only put 3110 miles on the car. We are angry and feel helpless as we search the internet and see where Chrysler is refusing to acknowledge or fix this problem in its vehicles.

My car died with only 30 seconds warning. I was driving south on rt 83 just south of st charles Ave in villa park when my car started to jerk and make loud noises. I had the car towed to the place of purchase and they said that sludge was present in my engine. I had my oil changed 6/15/2004 atr midas in villa park IL and there was no sign of sludge in my engine.
