Car suddenly stopped while on the expressway at 60 miles an hour. I hear this is not unusual but seems to be a frequent compliant about this car. If so many people have this problem it should have been recalled for safety factors. But I am sure the big car company will not allow any of this to come to fruition and focus on the safety of the consumer.
I was told my motor 2. 7 was totaled because of sludge.
I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. 2. 7l engine. The oil light came on and stayed on and now the engine is ticking. I was driving and then the car just cut off. The oil dip stick was at the right level.
My car has very low mileage and it just suddenly started coughing and choking and revving up and slowing down - it was completely out-of-control! I had to pull over on a major freeway (interstate 5 in oregon) and waited on the side for a tow. When I got it home I was told to drive it a couple of blocks to get the engine analyzer on it, but it sounded horrible, the valves were knocking fiercely and it sounded like it was out of oil, which I check frequently. The guy that checked it really didn't have much of an answer except a relay switch. We replaced it but to no avail. I took it to a local mechanic and he wanted about $4500 to replace the engine - where they found metal shavings and some sort of bolt that they couldn't get to down in the valve. I cannot afford to replace anything on this car and I am amazed and disgusted that Chrysler would put this kind of engine out to the public. I have read hundreds of complaints now about the 2. 7 l engine - with people in the same predicament. And it's not just online - I have a neighbor with one that has the alternative engine and he's heard the same thing. His car runs great because he doesn't have the 2. 7l. . . . Chrysler should pick up the pieces for all these poor people who have faulty cars and at least replace the value of their car as it stands today. Please help.
I was driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid se and with no warning the heat went out and the car began to smoke and cut off and I had to coast over to the side of the road on a dark road and wait till the engine cooled down. It took about fifteen minutes before the car started again. I just purchased this car in July and it died on me in November. The engine is a 2. 7 and is known for these issues. I took the car to a mechanic and they told me that the antifreeze is mixing with the oil,the headgasket is gone and he gives it a month before the motor goes. I googled the 2. 7 and read similar stories.
I was just driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid to work on the highway. No indication what so ever of engine problems. Cold air started to run through the heater vents inside the car, then I had no acceleration. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw white grayish coming out the rear and front of car. I pulled over immediately, but it was too late. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he told me the engine had blown and failed a compression test. I never had a problem with this engine before and always changed the appropriate fluids. I bought a used car and my Intrepid is still sitting broken in my driveway.
Engine seized up and needs to be replaced.

My car seized on route 3 in PA on my way to take daughter to see surgeon on her first trip allowed to be sitting in a car to get her staples removed after major back surgery. The oil light came on and within 2 seconds the car shrugged twice and died. With no warning beside the 2 second interval of the oil light I lost all steering and braking abilities to get my car safely off roadway. This was especially scary because it was the first day she was allowed to sit in a car and only to see her surgeon. I am told by my mechanic that my timing chain is bad and it is impossible to replace, they are on back order because so many people have had the same problem. My Dodge dealership told me they are unaware of anyone else having a problem with timing chains at all. My car is undrivable, useless, crushing blow for a single parent of 3 kids.

We purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid and have had nothing but trouble with it. It has been in the shop for repairs continuously and still cannot be fixed. All in all, I have invested about $3500 for repairs and still the car is unsafe to drive. I have a loan on this vehicle and have to pay even though I am unable to drive this car. I have seen numerous complaints on this vehicle and it doesn't appear that anything every gets done with them.
2001 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 engines fail after only 74,000 miles and Chrysler is well aware of the engine sludge problem.
Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid ran good until about a couple weeks ago. It just started to rattle and tick. It sounded like it was knocking. We had several people look at it and they didn't have a clue. Then when my husband was on his way home from work it just died in the middle of the road. We finally got it home and we noticed that the spark plug on the left rear was in pieces like it blew up. I looked it up online and turns out tons of people had the same problem. There is a default in the engine and Chrysler knows all about it and doesn't care. My husband is military and had no way to get to work. Is there a lawsuit against them? can you help? what should we do? I can't attend school anymore or work and my stranded with a baby what if he gets sick and has to go to the hospital. Please help. Thank you.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. While exiting from the freeway at 30 mph the engine locked. The vehicle was towed home, not sure of current or failure mileage, or incident date. The vehicle had not been looked at by a dealer, and the vehicle had no prior repairs done besides oil changes.
My 2. 7l 2001 Dodge Intrepid ran fine Saturday morning. Saturday it was very sluggish and began "ticking". When we checked, it had no oil. There was never white smoke, no dripping oil under the car, no indicator light when you were driving down the road, other than an occasional flickering when the car was in idle. Dealer is now saying the engine in junk and it will take $5200+ to fix. Book value doesn't support repair. Only 78,000 miles.
The engine blew . . . Never got a warning that it was having problems. Always got the oil change at oil changing time. . . . At wal-mart. Have records . . . . . Please help . . . Don't have 3. 500 dollars for a new or use engine.

Contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. On 10-06-05 the contact's grandson was driving the vehicle when it completely stopped. The contact reportsed of having no problems with car prior to this incident. There were no lights that came on prior to the incident. She had it towed to a repair shop, where they told her the motor blew out. The car had less than 40,000 miles on it. The mechanic at the repair shop told her he had never seen anything like it. The mechanic advised her to call the NHTSA. Her daughter found the number on the website. The contact talked to a Dodge manufacturer in detroit. They gave her a claim number: 14143722. They told her to show proof of all of the oil changes she had done on the car ,and they would take it up from there. The mechanic told her the oil was very clean. He had just changed it about six weeks ago.

I bought my 2001 Dodge Intrepid in April of 2001 and had problems with it. A year later, when the transmission failed. Fortunately. It was covered under an extended warranty, and my costs were minimal. I changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles, but now my oil check light began to come on when the car was at idle. I will bring my care to my mechanic on Monday, may 2, 2005 to have him investigated whether or no I have an oil sludge problem.
