12 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

I bought a used 2001 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7l with 61,000 miles. I gave it regular oil changes. While driving on 114 highway my engine seized causing my power steering to fail and cause great difficulty for me to pull to the side of the road. My engine is junk and my warranty will not cover this, Chrysler will also not take fault, even though I took all the necessary precautions for my car. I am afraid that someone else in my situation may not have been able to get to the side of the road like I was, and may resort in a fatal accident. I have read online and this is happening to many many people with Dodge engines years 1997-2003.

16 Engine problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2006

The 2. 7 liter engine on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid started ticking. I immediately took it to the snethkamp Dodge dealer in lansing, mi for repair. The service dept. Advised that the engine was sludged up because I didn't change the oil as recommended by the manufacturer. When I advised the service technician that I did get oil changes as recommended, and have the receipts to prove it, the service tech. Changed his story and advised that the 2. 7 liter engine in the Dodge Intrepid was defective. The dealership would charge $600 to tear apart the engine to "find out for sure. " the cost would not cover any repair. I asked the service tech. What Chrysler/Dodge was going to do to remedy this problem. The service tech. Advised that Chrysler/Dodge wouldn't do anything for me, the car was no longer under warranty. I told the service tech. To give it an oil change and took it home. I drove it for 10 days until it died while dropping my daughter off at day care. I bought the car in Feb. 2002 from snethkamp Dodge, it was 6 months old and had 5996 miles on it. The car was a program car. I financed it for 5 years, and still have 3 payments left, and no car. The car has just under 49,000 miles on it. I filed an online complaint with the Chrysler group customer assistance center and requested that Chrysler repair/replace the engine in my car (reference number: 15524183, email case number: 1538494. ) the Chrysler customer service reply was for me to contact my local dealer or refer to my owners manual, and no, they wouldn't repair or replace my engine.

17 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2006

My engine began ticking, I pulled over popped the hood and smoke rolled out, I checked the fluid levels and tried to restart the car, it wouldn't start, I waited a few minutes tried starting it again and it worked, I drove 3 miles home and the engine died as I turned down my street, once again the engine was smoking so I popped the hood and flames shot up, I put the flames out and the car has been sitting in my driveway since. I have done nothing to repair it since apparently it's a design of Dodge and Chrysler's 2. 7 v6 according to many other owners.

18 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

- while driving the vehicle started losing power and started smoking. The contact pulled to the side of the road, and had the vehicle towed to a local repair facility. At the repair facility they stated that the vehicle needed to have the engine replaced. The contact took it to the dealership ,) and they stated as well that the engine needed to be replaced in the vehicle. The contact concerned because after researching the issue, she has seen many similar complaints.

19 Engine problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

I purchased what I thought to be the last vehicle I would own. I put very little miles on my cars. I purchased a 2001 Dodge Intrepid in December of 2001. In September 2006, with barely 28,000 miles on my car, the engine sludged up, broke the timing chain and had to be towed to my local Dodge dealer. I was told that my engine needed replaced due to sludge buildup and that the car manufacturer knew about this problem. My car, which I was still paying on and carrying insurance on, is sitting in a garage because I am unable to afford a new engine. The company I had the extended warranty with does not cover sludge damage and Chrysler all but hung up on me when I called them to voice my complaint. I feel they should be made to replace these engines that were faulty straight from the factory. Consumers should be able to have some recourse for things like this.

20 Engine problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2006

While driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid on a main road in erie, the car just dies on me, while trying to make it to the side of the road, a car came within inches of hitting my car while he was doing approximately 40 miles an hour, because while trying to get my car out of the way, I was still in the middle of the road, and the light turned green for the oncoming traffic. Getting my car to the side of the road and out of everyone's way, I have the car towed off the side of the road, and taken to a local mechanics, who in turn finds out that the timing chain is broke due to a faulty engine, with the sludge build-up which in turn has caused all of this problem. Also apparently Dodge/Chrysler feels that so many americans are causing this problem, by neglecting our vehicles, and not properly maintaining our rides. I am appalled that this is okay, and so many of us are getting ripped off by the company. It is amazing that I almost was in an accident, because of this faulty vehicle. Is it going to take all of us to die on the road while driving for something to be done about this? thank heavens my child who has cancer was not in the car, and that I wasn't on the thruway trying to get him to pittsburgh for his chemotherapy.

21 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2006

Dodge Intrepid se 2. 7 engine. Engine slugged after 62k with reccomended regular oil changes, the car did not fail on the highway, thankfully, but as I've investigated, there are a lot of web sites looking to encourage owners to report this failure--as it could have easily been on the highway. Nothing is being done to the car. The dealership said "yeah, we have a lot of problems with those engines--we've tried to fix it before and it never works. . . And you're out of warranty. You should scrap it. ".

22 Engine problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

Engine went due to oil sludge build up at 52,000 miles. Car was properly maintained. Numerous problems with this car starting at about 30,000.

23 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2006

Blown engine with 62,075 miles. I have all service record on this 2001 Dodge Intrepid se 2. 7 liter.

24 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2006

Engine on 2001 Dodge Intrepid failed on my way to work on 4/24/06. Engine is 2. 7l 6 cylinder dohc - timing chain broke - and engine is ruined. Will cost 7,700 to replace.

25 Engine problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2006

Our 2001 Dodge Intrepid engine died which only has 78,000 miles. Two mechanics told us it would be better to junk it. It would cost between 4000- 5000 to replace the engine. The car is paid off already so we have a paid off car sitting in our driveway unable to drive. We called Dodge and all they said was that they would give us the full value of the car if we purchased another Dodge. We don't want another Dodge or car payment. We just want our car to work.

26 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2006

The day after I got a routine oil change on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid, I was driving in town and my car seized up and died. I did not know what to do, so I put it in park and tried to restart it. I was on a hill and fortunately, was not traveling fast so I was able to drift in neutral to a curb. What a feeling, a sudden jolt, losing control of the steering and the brakes. I certainly did not expect the news that was to follow. I had the car towed to a dealer and was told that I needed a new engine and the cost would be about $5500. 00. How could that be? there is only 48,700 miles on this car and I have it serviced every 3000 miles. I certainly cannot afford to put a new or rebuilt engine in this car and still have a loan on if for over $4000. 00. I began to investigate and found out that the company has been well aware of the problem with the 2. 7 liter engines and are doing nothing about it. There is even a clause that states that extended warranties are not available on this engine. Furthermore, I understand that the trade-in value of any car with this engine has gone drastically down. We, the consumers, are being shafted by Dodge. I loved this car and expected to own it for at least 10 years. Now it has become my biggest nightmare. Any.

27 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2006

I was driving the car when it suddenly started running rough. It was in the afternoon on a moderately busy street. Before I had a chance to stop and see what the problem was the car died. I called a tow truck and waited in traffic for the truck to come and take me to the mechanics. The engine needed to be replaced. We were able to find a used engine but the problem is that it's another Intrepid engine - so, is the same thing going to happen again. Our car is a 2001 and had only approx. 73000 miles. It was a new car purchase and we still owe money on this car. Now we owe more.

28 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2006

The oil light on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid began flickering at stop lights. I took it to the dealership, and was told that I had a short in my electrical system, not a major issue. Two months later, my engine began sputtering and died on the interstate during rush hour. I was able to restart it and make it to work with my engine smoking badly, but had to have it towed to a mechanic, who told me my engine was shot. Dealership would do nothing. Car had 81500 miles and warranty ran out at 80000.

29 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2006

Vehicle's oil light flickered and approx. 20 minutes later, the car began tapping loudly. Oil was changed about a month earlier. Car was towed and it was determined that the engine was blown due to engine sludge.

30 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2006

The car, without warning, died while being driven on the freeway.

31 Engine problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2006

My 2001 Dodge Intrepid lost heat, smoke was pouring out of back of car,all dash gauges were normal and car stopped running. All of these things happened within seconds. The car was towed to the dealership where I bought it in 2001. Service department said engine was bad and need to replace for $6500. I am disabled and still have to pay for car and insurance that's sitting in the driveway. Also I paid for an extended warranty, they will not cover anything!.

32 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2006

While driving my 2001 Dodge Intrepid down a gravel road the engine gave out and lost all power steering and brakes. Am just happy that I was not going very fast do to the gravel and my two young kids were not with me. Called daimler Chrysler and it is my entire fault even when it seems to be a very common problem with the engine. The cost to repair the car is $5000. The car has only 68,000 miles on it and has been taken care with oil changes every 3,000 miles. Don't have the $5,000 to fix the car and daimler Chrysler says it is not there problem just mine for buying the car.

33 Engine problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2006

My wife and I bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid in 2001. The timing chain went out on us twice, the first time my wife was driving it and it was shaking and rattling. We took it to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty, without informing us of the problem with these 2. 7 liter engines. The second time I was driving home from work on the freeway and the car lost compression, I pulled off the freeway and then couldn't start the car back up again. I had it towed to the dealership, they told me we needed to get a new engine which would cost us about $7,000 dollars, or they could try to fix the timing chain again for around $1,000 dollars, but there was no guarantee it would start. We called the dealership that we bought it from they told us they couldn't help us since it wasn't under warranty anymore. They said we could try to contact Chrysler, but they probably would not help us. So now we have a five year old car that we can't use and can't afford to get fixed. We are a young family with a 2 year old and 3 month old, and would greatly appreciate some help in this matter. Thank you for your time.

34 Engine problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2006

Good morning, my name is ryan grubbs and I live in hamilton ohio. I am the owner of the 2001, Dodge Intrepid. On January 28, 2006 my wife was driving down a rural road when the engine of the car started to tick as she was slowing to go around a bend in the road. She looked at the gauges to find nothing real abnormal. When she got almost around the bend and tried to speed up a little the engine would not respond. The wheels ended up locking before finishing the curve, and she slid off the road. My wife had to get out of the car in a dangerous part of the road and walk quite a distance to get to a phone to call me. We have four children and one or all could have been with her at the time. If the engine would have stopped sooner she could have gotten really hurt. I had the car towed to a repair shop in fairfield, ohio, and they have since informed me that the whole engine needed to be replaced. After talking vehicle to the mechanic, he informed me of the problems of this engine. This engine did have sludge build up in it. When I would take it to get its regular oil change I would have to get the engine flushed to get the sludge out, costing more money. Also having problems with heating system. But, I associated that with some sort of heating element not working. It would work fine moving down the road, but when I would stop at a sign or a light it would get cold. I had all the signs I have discovered from your web site after the engine went out. I would appreciate any help or information you could provide.
