I own a Dodge Intrepid 2001 with a 2. 7 liter engine. I was driving and suddenly without warning. . . No sounds. . . . No lights. . . The engine died. . . I nearly was involved in a major accident. I took my car to the shop and they said the engine was no good and I needed to replace it. I was quoted $6100. 00 and sludge was mentioned by the mech. I changed my oil every 3000 miles like clockwork (my dad was a auto-mech) because I realize how important it is. My question is how can sludge build up so quickly. . . . And there is definitely something very fishy here. . . Please help. . .
The engine just went dead when I was driving. No signs before that. I bought the car only for 31 days.
Car seized up afternoon of oct. 14, 2005. This vehicle has been maintained with oil changes every 3-5,000 miles.
My Dodge Intrepid 2001 engine locked up while I was driving on the freeway. The repair bill is between $4,500-$6,000. The engine is now dead. The mechanic said there was no oil in it although I've put in 3 quarts in the last 2 weeks and had the oil changed on time.
Oil light blinking erratically, going into reverse when in drive-not once, but twice.
The caller said that while driving 55 mph and slowing down the engine blew out. She was able to get the vehicle off the road, and had to have it towed to a repair shop and later to the dealer, who said it would cost the caller $4700 to $7000 to fix. It. Manufacturer said they will not do anything for free because the warranty expired. The consumer explained that the engine has not been repair yet because she cannot afford to pay approximately $6000 for a new engine.
My recently acquired 2001 Dodge Intrepid's engine seized-up while I was driving in traffic. The loss of power steering and eventual loss of the power brakes almost caused me to side swiped another vehicle. The failure was due to oil sludge. This car has been maintained and there is no reason for the sludge to have built up as it did! the engine will have to be replaced at a cost of more than the $5500 I owe the bank that is financing the vehicle.
We have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with 68000 miles on it. We were in north carolina on vacation and the car just quit for no reason. We had it towed twice and the last time was to Dodge dealer on told us it would cost around $900. 00 to fix it but could not give us their word that this would fix the problem. The felt that the engine could be damaged. We ended up renting a u-haul with a car dolly to get this car back to ohio. We were in this u-haul for 14 and half hours. It was very hard to pull in the mountains of nc,virginia and wv. I feel that this was a very traffic hazard considering that would could not get it up the mountains past 50 miles a hour on busy highways. No one seems to want to help us with the car. We have spent $1000. 00 to just get this car to our home and now we find out that we are not the only ones having problems with these 2. 7 liter engines. We have not fixed the car yet because we now do not have the resources to put a complete engine in this car, which seems to be the norm for these cars. So therefore we are paying for a car that is not running. Dodge is trying to say that people did not take care of the mantaince on these cars and we are at fault for the engine being junk. This is bs. Please look into this matter for lots of people that have these 2. 7 liter motors.
Dt: the contact owns a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. The engine seized due to sludge. This occurred during normal driving. The engine did not restart the vehicle had to be towed to a Dodge dealership. The dealership stated that it would cost over $7000 dollars to repair. This is the first incident with this vehicle. The transmission is an automatic.
I Ave a 2001 Dodge Intrepid and at just under100k the engine seized up and blew the head gasket. I then purchased another engine that cost me $2500 14 months ago. This new engine had 40k on it. That engine has now seized up and blown the head gasket. I was in a parking lot and a lady came up to me and asked if I have had any problems with my Intrepid because she has the same one and just had to replace the engine. When are they going to be responsible for producing such a poor product that they charge tens o thousands of dollares for. When it wasgetting towed the guy said that he tows a ton of these. I have done some research and the 2. 7 liter engine has had tons of problems.
2001 Dodge Intrepid. The consumer states the engine on the v blew out because there was sludge built up. This engine was maintained by mechanic. Therefore, there should not have been any sludge. The vehicle was working fine prior to this. It happened on June 15, 2005. The vehicle did not catch fire, the engine died after being driven. Then, it would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the mechanic ,and he stated that engine needed to be replaced. The heater inside the vehicle was not working properly before this happened. When he added water the heater worked. The consumer found out this was part of the problem.
2001 Dodge Intrepid engine blew as a result of the timing chain breaking. ** answer required***. The consumer stated the warning sign that the engine was about to blow was rust colored oil sludge on the inside of the oil cap. The consumer had an oil change 2 weeks before the engine blew, however no one mention that there was a problem, even though the rust colored sludge was in plain sight.
Caller had a slight ticking in engine for about 2 months. Then it started knocking. A mechanic said there was no cam signal. When they did a diagnostic had a knock in motor. Caller was told needed a new motor. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.
My 2001 Dodge Intrepid engine started failing at 40,000 miles and has now completely failed. It sits in my drive way while I still pay a monthly note on it. Like many Intrepid owners with the same problem (failed engine) I cannot afford the $4,000 to $8,000 replacement cost I hope with your help daimler Chrysler will be held accountable. I will never buy another Chrysler vehicle.
I bought this car new and have taken good care of it, including regular oil changes. Engine seized while traveling at high speed on highway while commuting from los angeles. I was lucky to get off the freeway without incident and basically coasted off the nearest exit and into a gas station. Dealer?s mechanics say oil sludge buildup due to owner negligence caused bearings to be pushed out of place resulting in thrown rod. I can produce most receipts for oil changes but not all, so third-party extended warranty that I purchased with the car will not be honored. I was not negligent in maintaining this car and it should not be dead at 63000 miles. The dealer now wants $1056. 00 for just diagnosing the problem, and the repairs (engine replacement) are estimated at between $6000 - $8000. The car even though maintained inside and out very well was only worth approximately $8000 - $9000. The balance on my loan for my new paperweight is approximately $12000. The car is now sitting at the dealership waiting for resolution. I will be pursuing legal remedy.
Driving 55 on highway engine started knocking and quit timing chain blew up engine. My mechanic said it looked like a stick of dynamite was put in my engine. Reported it to Chrysler and they said bring the suit on it's all your fault. Sludge is from poor care.
Oil light came on for about 15 seconds then the engine started knocking and seized up.
The 2. 7l engine seized while driving 45 mph. Dealer and manufacturer were notified.
While driving 40 mph the engine seized without warning. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide additional information.
We bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid in March 2002. We also purchased the 5yr/100,000mile extended warranty. About 5 weeks ago, I was heading down the road for work and my car just conked out. Had it towed and later found out it was the engine. We notified daimler Chrysler and they had it towed to martin dealership in turnersville NJ. The adjuster came and found small amounts of sludge in the engine and asked for receipts for oil changes and we gave them all we had. We took good care with oil changes almost every other month. The mechanic then calls back and said we were denied and the cost will be around 6,500. 00. The adjuster also said that nobody does oil changes on sundays,(one or two of the receipts had Sunday dates, and we did have the oil changed on a few sundays). The mechanic said the 2. 7 Intrepid has a long history of sludge problems even if you change the oil often. Why don't they take this in consideration instead of making up other reasons for not paying?.
Purchased car in 02 with 11000 miles. Maintained car well. At 57000 miles the engine and transmission blew. Dealer said their was a build up of sludge. My car was in the shop for 30 days. 4 days after repaired I returned it to dealer with complaint of transmission slipping. They couldn't feel it slipping when they drove it. Now tonight, 3 weeks later, it was towed back to the shop for transmission failure.
While driving at approximately 35 mph, the vehicle started losing power. The dealership indicated this was due to a sludge problem.
20 01 Dodge Intrepid,43k. Mi. , purchased in 02, drive 7000. Miles, year maintained to specks. Last oil change showed massive amounts of sludge build-up. Two weeks later the engine blew. According to serv. Mgr. At dealership where we purchased it, it is the timing chain guides. I'm sure he's farmiliar with the noise because Chrysler have denied thousands of people the use of thier 2. 7 l engined vehicles for a long, long time. It is a known cronic problem with this engine, and they know it, and nothing is being done about it. And, like thousands of others, we have to continue to pay for the driveway ornament as it can only sit there. We certaimly can't afford to fix it, so we borrowed my mother-in laws car, which got stolen from our driveway a week after we borrowed it. This problem must be addressed immediately by the proper authorities and they must be held accountable for any and all repairs needed to be able to get rid of the car.
The vehicle would accelerate no more then 30 mph, the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer informed the consumer that the problem was due to sludge build up in the engine.
The engine in my auto( 2001 Dodge Intrepid) failed----regular oil and filter changes took place----engine would cutoff without notice while driving------chrsler would not acknowledge warranty but would repair at cost-----research indicates that this engine would develope a sludge buildup problem as my auto did-----my engine had to be replaced at a cost of over $5,000.
I was driving at 20 mph. The steering wheel locked up. Could not brake or speed up. One mechanic said it was the timing chain. And I would need a new motor. Estimate was 4900- 5500. Cant afford it.
My wife was traveling on highway 65 and stopped at the light. The engine suddenly shutdown withhout warning and smoke came out from under the hood. My wife was terrified and stuck in the middle of the road for about 20 minutes until the highway patrol pushed the car to the side. The estimated repair cost from a shop is $7,500.
Had a noise coming from the top of my engine that started on my way to work one morning. Drove it home and then took it to the Dodge dealership to have it looked at. They said the engine was bad due to sludge and needed replaced. The timing chain had not broken yet so they said if didn't replace the engine, I should replace the timing chain and get rid of the car.
I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid 2. 7 just recently my car broke down, I took it to several places(4) to find out the problem and was told be 4 different mechnics 2 been a Dodge dealerships that it was the engine. I was also told by all 4 mechnics that the Dodge Intrepid has a slugeing problem with all the 2. 7l engine models. I would like to know why this was never recalled or why Dodge did not do anything about it. I have all my paper work for maintence done on my car . I feel that is not do to any fault on my own however I am stuck with a $4000-6000 repair bill for a problem Dodge knew about. Why.
Knocking in engine while driving home from work. Took to Chrysler and they said there was sludge in the oil, and my warranty was null and void.
No warning at all. My son was driving on the interstate going about 65 mph when the engine stopped running without any warning. Luckily he was able to maneuver the car out of traffic before it completely stop. The vehicle had 56,000 miles on it and was covered by a extended warranty. The warranty company refused to pay because they said it was a manufacturer defect. 2001 Intrepid.
The consumer was driving the vehicle, stopped at a stop light and the vehicle turned off and would not start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, were it was found that a rod had come loose. The warranty company is in liquidation and the consumer had to pay for the vehicle. The vehicle manufacture stated it is not their responsibility.
Engine locked up while driving between 55-60 mph. Vehicle was towed to dealer, who indicated that this occurred due to sludge in the engine because of oil build up. This was a common failure with these engine sizes. Also, because this was a common failure mechanic had having difficulty replacing the engine.
