1 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

I bought this car from my brother-in-law about 5 months ago. I changed the oil less then 3,000 miles ago. I began noticing some weird engine noise over the last week. The sound got alot worse today on a 30 mile trip to pick up my 3 year old daughter from her grandma's house. The car began making a loud banging or knocking sound when you let off of the gas while driving. The car then just died while driving down the road. Luckily, I was able to pull the car over without any problems, but who knows what would have happened if I was driving on the highway. I had the car towed to my house. I tried to start it at home and it would turn over and start, but it sounds like the engine has rocks or something in it and only idles for a second or two before dieing again. I hope that this problem has some way of getting fixed and that the ways you described really do help. I am now left with only one car to share with my wife and try to find a way to get to my full time job and my classes (I am also attending classes 4 days a week). I have always heard about the problems with the 2. 7 liter engine, but I thought they were just horror stories that were always told as "I know this guy who had problems with that engine" or "those engines are junk, and its only a matter of time before mine will blow". I really didn't expect this to happen because not even 3000 miles earlier I changed the oil and it was clean. I also drove the car up north which was a 3hr drive each way. No problems and the bang, knock, crunch its all over.

5 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

Our car started making knocking noises during acceleration. We immediately took it in to a auto shop to have it looked at. The engine is blown and will cost more than the car is worth to fix it, approximately $5,000. The car has only 88k miles on it, has had regular oil changes. Apparently, the engines used in this particular car have the tendency to produce engine oil sludge, ruining the engine oftentimes well before 100k miles. That was what the mechanic told us and what we have since found doing research on the problem. We ended up having to sell the car for scrap because we cannot afford to fix it.

18 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2005

My 2001 Dodge Intrepid w/ 70,000 miles started out with a small knocking noise, then as I was driving one day, it lost all of it's power & started making a horrible noise. When I was calling around asking garages how much it would be to have them look at the car, a few of the garages told me what the problem was before I even told them, they only needed the year & make of the car & they knew that it was the engine due to oil sludge. One garage told me that it was not gonna be worth it to get my car fixed because it would likely be more than my car was worth. Another garage told me he wouldn't even work on Intrepids with this problem because it would be such a mess. I even had a garage tell me not to waste my money on a tow truck because the 2. 7l engine Intrepids are junk & it wouldnt be worth it. I finally found a guy that is basically making his living on just working on these 2. 7l Intrepid engines. The cost was $2,300 to have the engine cleaned/soaked to get all of the oil sludge build-up off & have a any parts that were broken replaced. My dad, boyfriend & brother had to take the engine out & bring it to the garage & the garage did the work on the engine & then my dad, boyfriend & brother had to put the engine back into my car. So w/ that price of $2,300 I didn't even get a rebuilt engine & my family had to do alot of the work. I was making my monthly payments of $175 on a car that I couldn't drive for about 2 months all together.

23 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2003

Oil light came on while driving on the interstate. Pulled over to the side of the interstate. Had to have the car towed. There was an extremely loud knocking sound coming from the motor. Oil had been changed 10 days prior to the date of the incident. Oil is changed every 3000 miles. Our mechanic stated we would need a new motor. He estimated the cost at $8500. 00. He told us he had replaced three 2001 Dodge Intrepid motors in the last several months. He suggested we contact Chrysler. The local dealership was not helpful. The service department manager stated he wasn't aware of the 2. 7 motor problems. I called a 1-800-# with Chrysler and spoke to a representative which stated because of the miles on my car it was not under warranty and although Chrysler reconizes they have a problem with these motors the decision to do a recall had not been made at this time.

24 Engine Knocking Noise problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2003

On 11/30/03, on my way to work, my car started making a ticking & knocking sound. As I pulled off of the exit, it cut off. I had my mechanic look at it & he said it was the engine -- the car only had a little over 86,000 miles on it; & it's only 2 years old! I called the Dodge's customer care line; they said to take it to the dealer to check out ($65 tow, $80 dealer diagnostic). Before the service person looked at it, he asked if I had proof of my oil changes, I said I did not -- but that I did have them done every 3,000 miles. Naturally, it turned out that there was sludge in my engine (my independent mechanic did not see any evidence of it) & that it would cost $6900 to replace the engine! it seems to me that Dodge is running a scam. I have now discovered on various websites that this is a problem with the 2001 Intrepid. There are 20 such complaints on your website alone! I have 4 years left to pay on this car! it is ridiculous & unacceptable that Dodge is allowed to ignore & refuse to accept responsibility for installing faulty engines in the Intrepid!.
