I am filing this complaint to report a repeated safety-related defect involving the engine thermostat in my 2020 Dodge Journey and to formally request an investigation by the NHTSA office of defects investigation (odi). The thermostat in this vehicle has failed twice, despite being replaced after the initial failure. The recurrence of the same failure in a critical engine temperature control component indicates a potential design or manufacturing defect, not normal wear or improper maintenance. Each thermostat failure resulted in abnormal engine temperature behavior and warning indicators. Thermostat failure directly compromises the engine cooling system and creates a risk of overheating, sudden engine shutdown, loss of propulsion, and engine damage. These conditions present a clear safety hazard, particularly if failure occurs at highway speeds, in traffic, or during extreme temperatures. A thermostat is a non-consumable, safety-critical component that should not require multiple replacements in a vehicle of this age and mileage. The fact that the failure occurred again after repair suggests that the defect may be systemic and potentially affects other 2020 Dodge Journey vehicles equipped with the same thermostat design or housing. This issue meets NHTSA’s criteria for investigation due repeat failure of the same safety-critical component risk of loss of power or vehicle disablement potential for engine overheating and sudden breakdown evidence suggesting a broader defect pattern I am requesting that NHTSA: open a defect investigation into thermostat failures in the 2020 Dodge Journey require corrective action by the manufacturer if a defect trend is identified, including a recall, safety service campaign, or extended warranty this complaint is submitted in the interest of preventing further incidents and protecting vehicle occupants and other roadway users.

The contact's daughter owns a 2016 Dodge Journey. The contact's daughter received a notification for emissions recall: u67 related to the catalytic converter. An appointment was scheduled to have the vehicle serviced; however, the day prior to the appointment, the check engine warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and stated that the warning light might be related to the emissions recall. The dealer performed a diagnostic test for the check engine warning light and discovered that the warning light was related to the cam shaft. The dealer replaced the catalytic converter and reset the computer which cleared the check engine warning light. Despite the repair, the vehicle shut off while driving on three separate occasions. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer each time however, the failure returned soon after the vehicle was repaired. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v907000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
The carbondale fire department was dispatched to a vehicle fire in the parking lot behind the above-listed address. Fire personnel arrived and found a 2009 Dodge Journey with an engine compartment fire. Fire personnel used tank water and a pre-connected 1 3/4 in. Hose line to extinguish the fire. There were no exposures or damage to other property. Upon completing the extinguishment, an origin and cause investigation was conducted, which included, but was not limited to, scene examination, documentation, and interviews. The owner of the vehicle stated the following: he purchased the vehicle new. He has liability insurance only through allstate. This is not his primary vehicle. He does his own service. No known electrical issues, and there were no warning lights on the vehicle before the fire. The vehicle has approximately 160,000 miles on it the only known issue with the vehicle was a power steering issue. Before the discovery of the fire, the owner had pulled into a gas station across town to add power steering fluid. Upon leaving the gas station, the owner reported that within a few blocks, he began seeing black smoke coming from under the hood, and there was an odd odor to the smoke. (review of oty video cameras confirmed this account) he pulled in the parking lot at the above-listed address and accessed the engine compartment to find fire on the power steering reservoir, the plastic engine cover, and the cooling fan. He attempted to extinguish the fire with a soda he had and then attempted to retrieve water from a nearby building. Upon returning with water, the fire was too large to extinguish. The scene examination revealed an engine compartment fire that had transitioned into the passenger compartment during the failure of the front windshield. The hood of the vehicle had completely melted away during the fire. Fire patterns in the engine compartment were consistent with the owners account of the fire. The fire was determined to be unintentional, with the.

My check light came on and when I check the code which was a p0420, catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1). Emissions recall u67: catalytic converter efficiency. This was part of the recall. Therefore it doesn’t meet the CA emissions standard. It is causing my vehicle to slightly overheat at standstill. It’s hasn’t been inspected yet and it has been over a month since this started happening to the vehicle.
The thermostat and housing failed at 57,000 miles, less than 5 years of owning the vehicle. Not available for inspection as it is being replaced as I'm typing this. The problem was reproduced by the shop who is repairing the thermostat. There were no warnings or messages, the car started overheating severely one day and I brought it to the shop. This all started 3 days ago.
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a persistent engine misfire in my 2014 Dodge Journey awd, which I believe may pose a safety risk to my family, myself, other drivers, and is not explained by regular maintenance and care. Since I first purchased the vehicle, I have performed all necessary maintenance and adhered to the recommended service intervals. However, despite these precautions, the engine has experienced consistent misfires. The misfires are particularly noticeable when I attempt to accelerate, whether when speeding up or turning. This issue has caused a noticeable hesitation in power delivery, which has created dangerous situations while merging onto highways or trying to maintain speed during turns. I have taken the vehicle to multiple certified mechanics and dealerships, but they have been unable to provide a clear cause for the engine misfires. The misfires have not been resolved with routine maintenance or repairs. This issue has persisted for several months and continues to affect the vehicle's performance, causing slow acceleration and hesitation, which increases the risk of accidents or collisions in certain driving situations. Given the nature of this issue and its potential impact on vehicle safety, I am concerned that this problem may be more widespread and may require further investigation by the national highway traffic safety administration. I would appreciate it if your agency could look into this matter and assess whether this issue could be a design flaw, manufacturing defect, or an undiscovered safety hazard. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response and any guidance or steps that can be taken to address this issue.
It all started with no starts and had starter replaced and then charging problem had new battery and alternator replaced . Then driving to work all the dashboard lights lit up like a christmas tree and died a couple of times once in the middle of the road . Even when the car was in park and key out of the ignition the lights on dashboard would light up , like the car never totally shut off?replaced ecm afterwards thinking that was the problem but wasn’t the case (I still have the original ecm unit ) and still there was a battery drain , driving it and the lights lit up the dashboard and stalled out . You can here a buzzing sound after the car if off and key is removed ?.

Component/system that failed or malfunctioned & availability for inspection I have experienced multiple safety-critical failures in my 2012 Dodge Journey, including transmission failure, catalytic converter defects, engine repairs, electrical malfunctions, and brake system issues. Pattern of recalls across Dodge Journey models & lack of recall for my vehicle there have been numerous recalls across multiple model years (2009-2020) for the exact same failures my vehicle is experiencing, including: transmission failures and defects engine problems requiring major repairs catalytic converter and exhaust failures brake system failures and premature caliper wear electrical malfunctions affecting windows, wiring, and power systems despite this clear pattern of defects in Dodge Journey models, my specific vehicle has not been recalled for these issues. Dodge/stellantis needs to explain why these defects are not being covered under existing recalls when the same problems have been recognized in other model years. How my safety & others’ safety was put at risk 1. Transmission failure & unsafe driving conditions my transmission failed completely, causing high rpm revving, and loss of acceleration. My vehicle essentially stalled out on the highway. Now, the transmission requires a full rebuild costing over $5,238. 64. Dodge has issued recalls for transmission defects in other Journey model years, but mine is excluded despite experiencing identical failures. 2. Engine repairs & performance failures my vehicle has required major engine repairs, including: camshaft and rocker arm replacements ignition coil replacements thermostat and cooling system repairs Dodge has issued engine-related recalls for other Journey models, including crankshaft/camshaft sensor failures, engine stalling, and overheating risks. My vehicle suffers from the same defects but has not been recalled. These engine issues pose a major safety hazard by increasing the risk of engine stalling, loss of power, and.
The cruise control has stopped working. And there is faulty wiring in the hood making the check engine light come on. And a huge water and oil leak we just got the vehicle Friday 2/21.
My family has two Dodge Journeys both 2017s. The catalytic converter code keeps popping on our cars. Other years of Dodge Journeys and other Dodge vehicles have had recalls for those but not ours. Seems suspect to me that we would have two Dodge Journeys that are popping for the same codes, and this seems to be a issue in other Dodge Journey years previously.
My wife and I each have a 2017 Dodge Journey. Both of our vehicles have now shown codes for catalytic converter issues. Previous years of Dodge Journeys have been recalled for similar issues, but not ours at least not yet. I don't think it's right that we should have to repair on two cars the exact same issue that is reported for other Journey years.
My complaint is I just had an oil change which I have done every 3000 miles since I own this car. I took car in December 9th for an oil change and after, the car started leaking oil all over. I took it back to richlonn's service which indicated that the cooler/oil filter housing was cracked, it cost me $1,382. 93 to repair. The cooler/filter housing is located above exhaust manifold which had to be removed to replace, I think this is a fire hazard, not only that, I found out, Chrysler has had problems with these plastic housings, over the years did they withhold information from the NHTSA. ? if you check amazon just look at the number of people that had to replace these units. I'm [xxx], driving [xxx] years all the cars that I owned I never heard of a oil housing cracking. I just check with amazon, but if you look into it at other service centers you will see how many have been repaired! I think Chrysler should be responsible for the repairs, I am also writing to Chrysler about this. Thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6.
The contact owns a 2017 Dodge Journey. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, several unknown warning lights were flashing on the instrument panel. The contact stated that after receiving an oil change, the engine oil was low within a week. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic where the oil level was topped off, and the contact was informed that the engine oil cooler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that oil was leaking onto top of the transmission and that the engine oil cooler needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
The catalytic converter is the issue per our mechanic. We have had several issues out of the the vehicle, resulting in more money than the car is worth. The car no longer reaches over 55-60 mph, which is unsafe on the highway. Many times the car wont start. We thought it was the battery which have been changed several times, but the last mechanic stated it in fact the recall part that is needed.
Vehicle has oil cooler leak which plastic oil filter casing and oil cooler adapter cracked and leaked. Oil pooled up on top of engine casing channel below intake plenum and dripped down to electrical connectors that go into transmission. Engine oil heated and smoked because of heated motor and smoke goes into vehicle cabin causing oil smoke film inside with occupants. Oil mist is in the inside windshield and outside windshield along with wipers. There is a recall for this year Journey 2015 this year engine 3. 6 vet and transmission combination fwd 6spd ;however, the VIN number is not applying to correct the oil cooler and filter replacement under a recall. There is an upgraded part made that does not fail s44 recall; however I had to pay full price for the repair at a dealership and they replaced with the upgraded recalled part. The recall for this repair is s 44 why was not my VIN and vehicle covered under this recall number? please include my VIN number in this recall as well since everything is the same for s44.
While driving on the freeway some of the lights on my dash kit up and all the sudden my car would not go over 15 mph. I tried to turn it off and turn it back on and it continued to do the same thing. I did have my grandkids in the car.
Recently I have been having issues with the rear back up camera in the vehicle not working turning off beeping when nothing is around, also glitching and showing the camera upside down. I am also experiencing battery drainage in the vehicle I have just had the battery replaced and the alternator replaced as well, while I am searching online for common issues this seems to be happening to a large amount of people and the issues just keep equaling out to more then one problem. Motors staying on, electrical problems, constant power draws, many more issues I have many links to articles with Dodge Journey owners having numerous issues and Dodge not wanting to fix anything or recall things to fix their mistakes. I can add links to this page. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
While driving the car, car stalled and began displaying the lightning bolt icon on the cluster. The power steering stopped working and the brake was very stiff and hard to depress. I pulled off the road and waited a few minutes and started the car again. The idle was very rough, icon was still displayed on the cluster, and car began jerking and stalled again. I had the vehicle towed to the house and began looking into the issue. Error codes read on the car was p0365: camshaft position sensor “b” circuit, and the red lightning bolt indicating an issue with the electronic throttle body. The battery was taken out and tested bad so it was replaced. The throttle body was cleaned and tested good. When I tried to start the car after the codes were cleared, the vehicle attempted to start but wasn't able to turn over fully. The p0365 code returned. I then had a mechanic come check out the car to see if he could do anything to help. He determined that the valves in the engine were bent and the cars timing was off. With all of this being said, this issue I am complaining about is the p0365 camshaft sensor code. There was a recall for the camshaft sensors in some 2016 Dodge Journeys but my VIN did not fall in that range. When I called fca, I was told there was nothing to be done because my VIN wasn't included in the recall. A bad camshaft sensor would cause all of the issues that I am experiencing with the car. If the sensor is bad or doesn't perform as it should, it could effect the overall timing of the engine's firing sequence, causing stalling, failure to start, and damage to the engine, like in my case with the bent valves. This incident posed a severe safety risk to myself and the other drivers around me due to the loss of power steering and partial loss of braking ability. Luckily this incident did not occur on the interstate or major highway, where there are speeds in excess of 55 mph.
