I was driving on the highway when my husband and I smelt a burning oil like smell which we thought was the car in front of us. Nothing on the dash indicated any issues. We arrived home and noticed it was our car that the smell was coming from. I parked the car and came out the next morning and noticed a small wet spot under my car, thought nothing of it and left for work. After working all day I came out to find another small wet spot and on the drive home the same smell. Mentioned it to my husband who glanced underneath but couldn't see where the moisture was coming from. Drove my car to work the next day and it started making a low growling noise. Arrived at work and had a mobil mechanic stop and inspect the car where it was determined I had a crack in the transfer case. Parked the car for almost a year while I saved the money for the new transmission I was told I needed. Got the new transmission installed only to drive it home and have it start making a clicking sound! had it towed back to the transmission place where they informed me that the driveshaft is broken! dropped off another drive shaft to have installed and it is also now broken. I have a recall on my car for the airbag but I can't even get it to the dealer to be fixed because of the transmission / driveshaft issues.

Takata recall I was driving home while at a stop light I smelt a burn odor. I was just a 1/4 of a mile from home so I drove it home. Upon parking I noticed there was a small spot under my car forming. About the size of a quarter. Check all my fluids and and nothing was low. The next day it started and ran ok until it was ran for about 15 then once again the smell and now a low growling. I pulled off the road and parked at a gas station. I had a local shop look at my car and they determined my transfer case is broken. I have been having issues with my car when accelerating it would pull sharply to the right when it shifted gears. Was told there was nothing wrong with my car. It shouldn't try and change lanes when you accelerate. I have almost hit the car next to me just by accelerating. I have also been driving along and have my car turn off. I had to coast to the side of the road, put it in park and start it again. This has happened on four different occasions. The stalling happened on the highway while the transfer case was on city street.

They need to recall this car now, not years from now . This is a dangerous situation it is part of the driveshaft connection. There have been complaints since 2013 about these transfer cases leaking, cracked , seals leaking driveshaft problems. I don't understand why it is taking so long for someone to do something about this. I want chrsysler Dodge to recall this vehicle and purchase my vehicle back. Also brakes in this vehicle wear at 5, 000 miles and every 5,000 miles which again is a problem. Hundred of complaints since 2012 and this has not been addressed either by this safety commission.
There was a exhaust smell in the cabin that was repeatedly checked by the dealer and couldn't find the source. Then on the highway while traveling out of town, I heard a loud bang. Pulled over and the car wouldn't start. Got it towed, and the mechanic said the transfer case needed to be replaced for $3000 with only 75,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Journey. While driving 25 mph, a loud abnormal noise was heard and smoke emitted from the rear of the vehicle. In addition, the contact independently noticed that the transaxle was leaking fluid. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transfer case and two gears in the transfer case had fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.
While stopped at a stoplight I heard a loud bang that at first, made me think someone had ran into the back of my Journey. When I realized that wasn't the case, I stepped on the gas to go, but it didn't, thinking I had knocked it out of gear, I had moved the gearshift into park then into drive and drove to my part time job. After getting off at 7pm, I got on the expressway to go home, once I started going the speed limit 55mph, I heard another bang noise and the truck was loosing speed, so I pulled over and called roadside. After finally getting the vehicle to the dealership they were about to take it out for a test drive and the service tech heard the bang noise. They put on the lift and found that the transfer case had cracked.
The output seal on the transfer case failed and was leaking on to the exhaust. Had it replace and it has failed a second time and the dealer informed me that the seal will only be replaced once and after that the whole transfer case has to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Journey. The contact stated while traveling at approximately 40 mph, there was a strong vibration and the vehicle was driving roughly. The contact discovered smoke under the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence where an independent mechanic diagnosed that the transfer case and/or the driveshaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 77,912.
I purchased the car in January of 2014 from a used car lot (which I will never do again) and it was sold with transmission leaks. I just found this out after taking the car in for a hole in one of the coolant hoses less than a month ago because it wasn't leaking on the ground. I started hearing a grinding, squeaking and ticking sound that my mechanic couldn't figure out. I just had the breaks done so they are essentially brand new. I had to have the tires replaced because they were worn to the thread. Going up a hill yesterday, I heard a loud noise and then the car wouldn't move. This left me in the middle of the road blocking traffic with 5 children in the car. Turns out there's a cracked transfer case. Sounds like there are many others like me out there having similar problems with this particular year make and model and a recall is in order. . . . Again!!!!.
I noticed over the weekend that the car started making a weird ticking noise. Also when put into reverse it seemed like it wanted to stall sometimes. I was driving to work and it started to buck and sputter. I was able to get it pulled over and there was smoke coming from under the hood. I had it towed to a garage where it was diagnosed with a cracked transfer case which came with a $2400 estimate! after doing a little research it sounds like this is a typical problem with this model and year and found many accounts on Dodgejourneyforum. Com. Sounds like a recall needs to happen before someone gets hurt if it hasn't happened already!.
I was driving home my wife, daughter and my pregnant wife, when about 1/2 from home a dark black smoke came out of the engine compartment, I pulled over and pulled the hood latch, and after I was able to get my family out of the car, I looked underneath the car,a dark fluid was pouring on top of the exhaust. The car had to be towed to the mechanic. After an inspection, he found that the power transfer case unit cracked. Had to pay out of pocket since dealer said that it wasn't under warranty and that's normal wear for these vehicle. $1350 for transfer case, $85 tow truck and $450 labor.
Had the car a little over a month and on the way home from work a very loud noise. We had it towed to dealer who stated transfer case has a leak. I had to fight with the warrenty company to cover this replacement. Now the electic system is causing my fan, brake lights, and chargersto go on and off. .
My car had broken down in October. The transfer case in this car was completely shot, and could not even be repaired. The dealership would not fix it under warranty. When the transfer case broke, it leaked fluid onto the exhaust on my car, and was catching fire. I was just able to get my car fixed, and put 400 miles on it, when it happened again. There needs to be a recall as I have spoken with dealerships who have told me that this is a recurring issue.

I bought my Journey less than a year ago. Since I am not the original owner I get the shaft with a car w/less than 60,000. Well, I had just gotten new tires when on my way home I apply the brakes to pull into the drive and hear a horrific metallic noise. Upon my husbands inspection there is nothing found wrong with the brakes or the front of the car, after not being able to stand the noise anymore I have him change the front brakes the next day, thinking maybe the tire guy had knocked something loose and we couldn't find it. Brakes still looked good, changed anyway. Noise still horrible. Next day took the car to a mechanic who informed me of major transmission problems. I had the car transported to a transmission shop. Diagnoses, transfer case has gone out, bad news over 600!!!!!!! on backorder, let me know it might be up to 2 months before they could get one to fix it. I talked to the local dealership, they informed me they could get one sooner. I had the car transported once again. After being at the dealership for 2 weeks now they are telling me it maybe atleast another month. Really? I am still waiting. Just wondering what the magic number of problems to one part does it take before Chrysler/Dodge admits that there is a problem with them and they do a recall on these transfercases that are not lasting as long as an american part should? if I had known about this common transfer box problem I would have atleast been the first owner of a new vehicle with a warrenty not the second who gets the shaft. So $2000. 00 later I am still waiting.
The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, she lost control of the steering wheel and crashed into a curb and there was an explosion noise at the vehicle front end. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic where it was found that the transfer case had a hole which caused it to explode. The contact also wanted to add that the brakes and rotors had worn prematurely and the ignition switch made a clicking noise. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 81,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the rotors, calipers, transfer case, and front passenger seat sensor caught fire, the vehicle also experienced a loss of power. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the brake rotors and the brake caliper were defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact also had the vehicle repaired at the dealer for the transfer case malfunction. Upon inspection for the seat sensor failure, the contact noticed that a rubber boot was not installed, which resulted in the insulation igniting. The contact extinguished the flames and placed electrical tape at the end of the wire. The vehicle was able to be restarted after numerous attempts. The tire sensor also malfunctioned, which resulted in the tire constantly going flat. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14373000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 34,903.
I purchased the 2009 Dodge Journey sxt used in 2012. In less then a year I had to replace an axle, then replace a drive shaft. Once the drive shaft was replaced, less then a month later I was driving home and heard a clicking noise. It lasted no longer then a minute and then about 1 mile down the road as I was turning on to my road I heard a loud crack. My vehicle then shook violently as I drove, as if one of the tires might be falling off. I cautiously continued on at no more then 15mph to my drive (maybe 2/10 of a mile). When I pulled in my car was smoking. The next day we had the vehicle towed to a local repair shop, thinking maybe it was a transmission problem. And were informed it was a transfer case needing to be replaced. It had cracked and split down the middle and was leaking fluid. When we called to check on the $1200. 00 part (after already putting in another $1500 in parts and labor to the other two problems) we were informed that the company was over 300 parts behind on them and it could take a while. Great. After immense online research it appears that this is a common problem in the sxt awd version of this vehicle. Had we purchased this vehicle new, it would have been covered under a lifetime warranty, however because it was used we get screwed. If you ask me, Dodge should back its vehicles, no matter what. A recall should be issued and Dodge should have to fix what appears to be a common problem.
Bought this vehicle used in September of 2009. Assumed that the unlimited powertrain warranty applied to this vehicle. Noticed a foul, pungent odor 2-3 days prior to following incident. On the day of the incident, I made a slow left hand turn when I heard a loud metallic sound from underneath the engine compartment. I exited the vehicle, looked underneath and found thick, dark fluid pouring from underneath the vehicle, as well as a small fire. Fire self extinguished. Was able to drive vehicle slowly home (approximately 1/2 mile) and park it. 2 days later, I had the vehicle towed to a mechanic, who diagnosed a failed transfer case. After the vehicle was removed from my driveway, I found a piece of metal approximately the size of a silver dollar where the vehicle had been. Dodge is now denying responsibility in this instance every though there appears to be (and my mechanic verified) a parts/manufacturing issue with this vehicle. Preparing legal action at this time.
The contact owns 2009 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while making a left hand turn the contact heard a loud pop. The contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed fluid leaking from underneath it. The contact stated there was a small fire, but there was no damage to the vehicle or injuries. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer and it was determined that the transfer case had broken. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle, but stated this was normal wear and tear and would not repair the vehicle. The failure mileage and current mileage was 67,400.
I have a 2009 Journey sxt, and the transfer case blew at 12,000 miles due to bad oil at factory, I thought "odd but okay". At that time I was informed I needed brakes and rotors. Again I thought odd and questioned why I needed both, it was explained to me that the rotors are so thin that they have to be replaced when replacing brakes. Under warranty but not for brakes about 2 months katerina got the recall after they put the same [xxx] brakes and rotors on there that was recalled so imagine my surprise when I had to get them done again at 35/40k to which I had my dad do them and picked out the brake shoes myself. So I drive it for a while another 20k and again I need new tires and brakes and an alignment. So 2000 later cus having "size 225/55/r19" there is only one manufacture and tires are 250 each. Now I am used to having new tires and you rotate them every other oil change and that's it untilyou get up there in mileage again. Not so - 3 weeks later I was back in there because I kept loosing tire pressure well on tire had a nail in it - which they didn't tell me they just said the tires look great they checked them for leaks and found none. One week later I was back in there as tires are loosing air once again. To which they tell me they will reveal them just this once free of charge and I need a new tire as the patch (that I didn't know about) on sidewall blew out. Okay now I am thinking good should be all set but then the dealership told me I had a cracked valve stem and for them to fix it will be another 200. Now when I pay 250 per tire I expect that the valve stem would be replaced and a new one put on. Again nope!!!,!,!!! so very other day we have to put air in my tires. Except one day the valve stem cover came right off and now my car sits. When buying vehicle I was told full sir spare nope again just a donut so if anyone knows why a valve stem would not be replaced when tires are I would sure appreciate some answers. . . .
