Purchased my Neon brand new in sept. 2005 in the summer of 2009 I started experiencing the car misfiring and putting along with codes p0335 crankshaft sensor & p0340 camshaft sensor and both were replaced and here we are March of 2010 and still having problems with the engine (sane parts replaced)light coming on engine misfiring and driving on the way to work one morning the car just completely died luckily I wasn't in any traffice. I was able to coast to the side of the road put the car in park after three attempts the car finally started back up again and a new code appeared p0129 barametric pressure. The engine light for now has gone off, but the codes are still there, it stil rides horriblel. I love this car but it is really becoming a pain in the ass I don't know from day to day what going to happen when I get behind the wheel no wonder they dont' make them anymore.

When the automatic transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, it causes the exhaust system to make a rattle and grinding noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealership on four occasions for repair with no resolution to the problem.

While driving at 70 mph, the speedometer fluctuated and consumer couldn't get an accurate reading of the vehicle's speed. The mechanic attempted to fix the speedometer numerous times, once by replacing the internal cluster. There was a squealing noise coming from the front of the vehicle, the noise was fixed by blocking the air intake on the front of the vehicle. The vehicle stalled several times on the freeway, however the mechanic was unable to find the problem. There was a noise coming from the heat shield. The consumer stated the vehicle consumed a lot of fuel, there was a rattle from the exhaust and the engine had an oil leak, subsequently the dealer was unable to verify the consumer's concerns.

On April 23, 2001, I was driving from cape cod to my home in campton, nh. The emissions control warning light came on and as I was pulling into the right lane to find an exit the car began losing power. As I approached exit 38, on interstate 93n, smoke started coming out of exhaust and by the time I reached the end of the exit the car stalled which was good because my brakes went all the way to the floor. When the car stalled the interior began filling with black smoke and I grabbed my dog by the collar and evacuated the car. Seconds after, the car burst into flames which shot out from under the hood. By the time the fire trucks arrived the car was burned beyond repair, including all my personal belongings inside the car.

Oil from leaking head gasket and valve cover gasket leak directly onto exhaust system, specifically the catalytic converter causing fire under the hood. I have known and read of many, many others with this same problem. Oil leakage in excess of 3 qts. Per week. The smell of burning oil inside of the car is noxious. I have a 3 month old baby, a 5 year old, and my wife and we can hardly take a 30 minute trip without having to stop for fresh air. There is a definate possibility of the driver or passengers losing conciousness. Smoke has been visible inside the car before from the burning oil.

When the car is driven in wet weather, the exhaust will get extremely loud. The problem seems to be that water is getting up into the car somewhere. The noise is loud enough that it seems the muffler has fallen off. Once you slow down in the car or stop the noise will cease as well. While the car is acting up it will also backgfire and sputter making a noise that is similar to sucking liquid through a straw. The car runs fine in dry weather. The car has been in for service 4 times for the same problem. It has also been looked at by the factory rep. Both the service personel and the factory rep have no idea what the problem may be. They have already attempted several repairs including aligning the intermediate pipe. At the last repair attempt they placed a shield over the exhasut system. The only thing this accomplished was muffling the sound the car makes when it gets wet. As of now the car still has the same problem.

Driving while raining, vehicle makes loud noise, sometimes stalls completely or loses steering power. Local Dodge dealer informed, cannot replicate, states other Neons with same problem.
I have a serious problem hearing that all Neons (informed by dealer-coyle Dodge in new albany, in) have a very common problem with the main gasket in the engine. I had a big misfortune in having my 96 Neon's main gasket failed and spewed out a lot of oil and almost had myself in a serious smoke problem that I smelled the oil burning on the exhaust system near the engine and could lead to a fire! I had taken the car to coyle and discovered that there is a big.
Vehicle sounds like exhaust system comes loose when driven through puddle and looses engine power, dealer given two tries to correct problem but has not been able to duplicate problem due to the lack of rain, anyone who experenced same problem email at dread@flinet. Net.
