Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 33 problems related to brake disc caliper (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
In April 2016 while driving my truck started to vibrate badly in the rear. I was driving on the highway at 70 mph. As I slowed down to pull over, the truck started to jerk like I was pumping the brakes. As it stopped, you could hear a tire skidding. Not steady, but like I was trying to break hard. I didn't have my foot on the brakes. The right rear wheel was smoking and extremely hot. I had it taken to a Dodge dealer where they diagnosed a sticking caliper. They replaced both rear calipers and bleed the brakes. The truck drove fine after the $570. 00 repair bill. In July 2016 while driving on a two lane county highway, the truck started pulling strongly to the left into oncoming traffic. I stopped and the left front wheel was extremely hot. You could not touch it. I let it cool and idled home on the shoulder. My truck has 56,000 miles on it. I called the dealer and they said I probably needed front calipers also. This appears to be a common failure with these trucks. I drive mostly on two lane country roads in the mountains. A skid or loss of control can be a very serious accident. In both cases there was no warning. With the front wheel it just started pulling left. If I hadn't had a firm grip on the steering wheel it would have crossed the center line. The break pads have 70 percent life left according to the dealer and they didn't replace them.

I am writing to warn you of a very dangerous problem with your remanufactured brake caliper part # le5383 purchased from a napa parts dealer in ann arbor, mi by main street motors. I had two of these calipers installed on my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck at main street motors on may 18, 2016. The left front caliper failed immediately, within the first couple of times I applied the brakes. I was able to get it back to main street motors before running out of brake fluid and crashing, luckily.

Ever since 50000 miles I have been having issues with the braking performance of the truck. Lately it has gotten scary bad. After a few stops either hard or mere traffic light stops the brakes start to over heat. I start to smell the pads cooking as if I were trying to stop a freight train. I get huge amounts of brake fade and the abs for the front does not work any more. The rear abs still kicks on but not as frequently. The stopping distance dramatically increases. After a few stops the brake pedal starts to sink to the floor board. During hard panic stops when the brakes are hot the brake pedal goes to the floor board and I lose most of the braking. I have replaced the brake pads, rotors, and calipers and still no change. I have taken the truck in to the dealer and they said they could not find any issues saying that it was normal or I could have the entire braking system replaced to attempt at solving the problem. Truck is at 142k miles now and still with the same issue got used to driving slow and replacing the brakes ever 30k miles.

The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving at an unknown speed, black smoke emitted from the rear of the vehicle without warning. In addition, when the brake pedal was depressed, an abnormal sound emitted from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brakes, calipers, and rotors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hub bearing, wheel hub, axle shaft assembly, and driveshaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Lastly, the front driver side headlight failed to operate. The head lamp was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 201,281.

Approx. In 2012 I filed a complaint that the rear pinion gear had snapped on my truck. The dealership recommended installing a new / used rear end. I had the used rear end installed. On 5-7-2015 while on the highway the axle on the rear end abruptly broke. This occurred at approx. 60 mph. Almost causing a catastrophe. The wheel broke away as well as the brake caliper, thus loosing my brakes. As a result damage to the body also occurred. As I said I did file a previous complaint but was told that even though there is a recall on the rear ends on some of these models mine was not one. I paid the $2,500 or so to have that resolved. I feel this shouldn't have ever happened as this vehicle let alone twice. As of now my vehicle is awaiting a inspection from the dealership as well as insurance.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 5 mph, the front driver side wheel hub assembly fractured. The failure caused the front wheel, brake rotor, and brake caliper to separate from the vehicle. The contact also stated that the brake lines fractured. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Previously, the front passenger wheel hub assembly also fractured. The vehicle was repaired at that time. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 189,000.

While coming to my destination,as I let off the accelerator,I noticed a pull to the side, and felt increased drag without foot on brakes. While exiting vehicle,I noticed a burning/metallic smell from front of vehicle and saw steam/smoke coming from front drivers side wheel. I looked close and saw discoloration of brake caliper and knew that it could not be driven until corrected. Aluminum alloy wheel was too hot to touch. There was no warning that was going to happen(breakdown). These were the original brakes from when purchased new on truck from me. It had 42,227 on it when this occured. Was flat-bed towed to Dodge dealer who said both sides needed replacement of rotors, pads, brake hoses, calipers which came out to $1200. 00 which is crazy for the low mileage. Dealer acted like this is normal maintenance.
Vehicle bought new in 2008. In the last couple of years, had replace both brake calipers due to dragging and overheating. Replace lf wheel bearing hub assembly - making noise - found to have worn bearing, wiper motor replaced for recall, never had issue. Now it does not work correctly, improper cycling speeds, won't turn on, or won't turn off at times. Mileage ~ 38,000. This is dangerous, just like the brakes and bearing.
Calipers: 34000 miles calipers failed and locked up. Rotors: 34000 miles rotors warped and failed.
The front brake will lock up on one side causing the rotor , caliper hub and wheel to become so hot it starts smoking . After it cools of it will release the locked up caliper and become drivable again. This will be fine for a while and then the other side will do the same thing. . This has to be very dangerous overheating all the front end components to these very high temperatures . There have been others with this problem on a forum ( vtcoa. Com ) I am a member of . There needs to be a Dodge recall on all the effected overheating parts before it causes a major accident if it hasn't already. The other problem is the power steering hoses keep leaking or blowing out . This is another real hazard to safety . Have you ever tried to steer a 3 ton truck with no power assist , not easy by any means . These two things are an accident waiting to happen and should be corrected by Dodge before someone gets killed.
My 2006 Ram 1500 2 wheel drive, big horn edition shakes while braking at approximately 70 mph until it slows to approximately 55 mph. Noone can find the problem. The truck shakes so badly, it feels like the front end is going to shake off! I have replace all 4 tires, had wheels balanced, replaced all 4 rotors, brakes, calipers, inner and outer tierods, front wheel hubs, shocks and the truck still shakes so bad that im scared I will be thrown into oncoming traffic if I had to stop fast. . . . I cannot find the problem and no one, not even the dealer can find the cause!.
I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with aprox. 54,000. The rotor and brakes went out on the left side only, when I took it to the dealership they stated my caliper was bad, thus causing the rotor and brakes, the caliper is covered by warranty not the rotor & brakes, a check shows the abs module was recalled on 2006 Dodge rams, my VIN is in the range for the recall, but mine is not in the recall (according to them), however they have no explanation of why so much damage at so little miles. A review of complaints shows several issues with rotor, pads & calipers on these vehicles all with low mileage.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 65 mph, the front end began to shutter. After slowing down and accelerating, the failure ceased. The contact struck a pothole and the vehicle began shaking again. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and they stated that the front driver side caliper was frozen. The VIN, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. The current mileage was 37,480 and failure mileage was 37,400.
Whenever I brake over 30mph pulsating from the front end and the steering wheel jerks back and fourth. On highways it is even worse going over 55mph replaced rotors and brakes and still doing the same thing. Next im replacing the calipers rotors and brakes with aftermarket upgrades and see what happens.
The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle vibrated when the brake was depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three occasions. On the first occasion the dealer replaced the rotors and calipers. The vehicle was taken to the dealer 5,000 miles later, but the dealer refused to repair the vehicle again. The vehicle was taken to another repair shop, and 9,000 miles later, the rotors and calipers were changed a second time. The contact stated that the rotors were too small for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 92,000.
Transmission makes load snapping noise when shifting into any gear from park. Front brakes caliper sticking causing brakes and rotors to over heat creating sequel and massive amount of dust and vehicle is sluggish from the brakes sticking so acceleration is basically non existent. Load humming from front wheels which leads to a shimmy and eventually a shake.
The right front brakes began to make an unknown noise when the brakes were applied. When the brakes were checked, the owner noticed that the brake caliper was pitted and not wearing evenly. The owner also noticed that the right front rotor had a problem. Somehow, the vehicle was manufactured with two left calipers instead of a right and a left. Please provide details.

The contact stated there was major vibration in the front end of the vehicle due to rotor warpage. When depressing the brake pedal from any speed over 20 mph the front end of the vehicle shimmied, and it was very difficult to hold the vehicle on the road. The vehicle has been to the dealership on four occasions. The brake rotors, calipers, and pads were repaired every four to five months. The manufacturer was contacted. There were no recalls. Updatd 01/25/06.
Front end shakes when braking. Tires are blad on on side due to frount end out of place. This has been in too the dealer 3 times for the front end and 2 times for the brakes.
: the contact stated the vehicle's brakes have never worked properly since they bought it. The vehicle has had new brakes, calipers, rotors and the abs system was tested every time the brakes were repaired. The brakes only last for 2 to 4 months before the brakes develop problems. During these failures the steering was shaky.
1 st. -brakes pulled to right couldn't keep truck on road went into ditch. 2nd. -brakes again pulled to right, went from left lane[4 lane highway]to right lane before stopping. 3rd-brakes pulled to right went onto right shoulder before stopping, based upon 40+years of working on cars ,the right front brakes drag went the are heated up and fade out completely, have been to dealer twice truck was bought in 02-2003 and has less than 15000 miles, still pulls to right.
The vehicle would shimmy when braking at 50 mph or more, the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer on three separate occasions. During that time the dealer made the following repairs: 1st. Turn both rear rotors. 2nd. Resurface both front rotors and 3rd. Replaced the caliper. But the problem continued. Please provide any further information. . . . .
The consumer was denied service for a recall which pertained to his vehicle.

My Dodge pickup has been into the dealer many times to try to fix a repetitive problem with my front driver side brakes. One pad out of the four up front wear down to nothing while the other 3 have practically no wear. The dealership has changed the caliper, rotor, pads, everything that has to do with the front disc brakes to no avail. The same front driver side wheel area has had the idler arm replaced and other parts to try to remedy the problem, but nothing has worked. The dealership now has run out of parts to change to try to fix, so they have pretty much gave up and say that I have to pay for another brake job. The single pad wears all the way down to the rivets within 12-15k miles, so the dealer tells me that I will need a brake job every 12-15k miles. Ridiculous. They have accepted all the other prior attempts to fix this problem under the vehicle warranty, but now they will not, as they have run out of ideas to fix it. The vehicle is still within its warranty period. They have no explanation to give me for this failure either.

Front passenger side caliper was sticking. On 25 July 2002 while driving 35 mph driver's side front caliper locked up. Please provide additional information.
The front disc brakes have a five inch u shape metal clip on caliper. The clip backed out and cuts the wheel. Consumer has to take a screwdriver and push it back in when he hears it clicking. Consumer previously owned a 2000 Dodge ram and it had the same problem. Consumer has not taken this vehicle to the dealership. But on the previous vehicle they replaced the clip and wheel.
During operation of vehicle right-front brake caliper would stick, causing damage to brake rotors and pads. Dealership has examined vehicle, and replaced both calipers and rotors. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
While driving, experienced excessive wear of brake pads/rotors and calipers, they required replacement every 3000 to 4000 miles, pads/calipers replaced 4 times, rotors turned and replaced twice.
