Rear brake line heavily corroded and ruptured in between the fuel tank and the frame (very little corrosion to the surrounding parts/frame). Fortunately the vehicle was parked when the line broke and I noticed I had lost virtually all braking ability while attempting to put it in gear. I had driven it 10 minutes prior to the line failing, and had noticed no degradation whatsoever.
2001 Dodge ram. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle steering wheel vibration, brake line replacement and front frame problems. Updated 07/27/15.
The rear hard brake line mounted on the frame rail behind the fuel tank was severely rusted in an area about 4 inches long that could not easily be visually inspected (hidden behind the fuel tank). The hard brake line ruptured at the rusted area which compromised 100% of the braking power from the pedal. Some quick research has revealed that this appears to be a common problem for this vehicle. Many suggest this warrants a product recall due to the dangerous and critical nature of the vehicle subsystem in question: brakes. I'm lucky to be alive . . . I had just returned from a trip through the mountains in tennessee with a full load in the truck bed and pulling a motorcycle trailer. The rupture occurred in my driveway while I was at a full stop!.

To whom it may concern, these rubber brake lines almost killed me barreling thru a downhill red light. Fixed bad part, then hit guard rail, damaged front grille, bumper and fender when the other line popped while driving. I was told this is a notorious problem with Dodge trucks. I'm not as angry about the filler neck which rotted and filed tank w rust chunks, replaced fuel pump. But I think more ppl need to b aware of this brake problem with these trucks, as far as I'm concerned, this is incredibly dangerous, and I might scrap it because it's problems 120k mile truck I can't even get 700$ for after the $ I've invested to keep it safe. I think the brakes need to be recalled with these trucks. Owners like me just let them sit because they rosy so easy their not worth fixing anymore, I regularly maintenence my vehicles, these are expensive to keep safe, thank you. Scott kimball. 120k 98 ram.
Brake system failed to stop vehicle when approaching red light. Was able to apply emergency brake which immediately stopped the vehicle before an accident occurred. Immediately look vehicle to Dodge dealer who overlooked brake system for leaks and air in brake lines. Dealer said nothing was found but that they have seen situations where the brakes can become 'soft' while slowly applying the brakes and they even had a fancy name called 'brake continuous travel' or something similar. I explained that soft brakes and failed brakes are two different things as failed brakes do not stop the vehicle. They said if it occurs again bring it back to dealer, this may not be possible if it happens at the wrong time.

The rear brake line between the gas tank and frame blew out as my son was pulling in the driveway. According to the internet, this is a common problem with these trucks.
I had the truck off, in park and e-brake engaged. A friend of mine was watching my child while I was pulled away and she had let him play with steering wheel (he loves playing with steering wheels). All of a sudden I hear the sitter screaming and turn around and saw my truck rolling down the inclined driveway with my toddler still in drivers seat and door open. I did what any sane mother would and tried to run to jump in and hit brake but ended up being dragged by the truck after it hit a pothole before crossing into a major road. When the truck finally came to a rest after crashing into a large fence with trees behind it, I managed to get my child out of truck and noticed the e-brake was still engaged. The truck has not been taken to a shop yet but will be soon. This is the only incidence of this malfunction with my truck that I know of and ive had it since 2009. However, I have previously had brake system issues where my brake lines popped off while I was driving down the highway. This really needs to be checked out. I now have a cervical spine injury, sprained wrist, sprained ankle, severe road burn where I was dragged, and multiple bruises, knots and scrapes. We were just lucky it happened after 5 o clock traffic had cleared out. There is a police report filed and my doctors have told me I need to look into getting an attorney.

While my vehicle was parked I was inspecting a noise I had heard previously and noticed my rear brake line has been worn through the protective insulation to the point where the inner brake line is now exposed. It looks like the bracket that supports the line is the culprit due to friction rubbing against the line while traveling. If not seen in time I suspect this could have caused the brake to fail.

This is the second time my brake line sprung a leak - drivers side rear. I am seeing many other complaints about the same issue / location.
The emergency and rubber brake line going from the front to the rear of the vehicle on the drivers side accumulated enough snow to break while driving. Causing loss of control of vehicle and injury.
Loss of braking ability - brake line failure due to rust/corrosion behind gas tank on driver's side of vehicle.
My rear brake line by the gas tank blew out today.

Leaving a gas station, I applied the brake to move into to drive, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I was fortunate enough to be next to the garage/mechanic I use and drove it into his lot. They are fixing it today. I was very lucky I had to stop for gas at that time and this failure didn't happen at an intersection. I have had many vehicles over my thirty years of driving and have never had a brake line "rust" and fail like this.
The brake line has failed. There is a pin hole leak. The metal brake line is between the gas tank and the frame of the vehicle. It has rusted out so much that it caused the line to fail. The line is hidden in the frame, which doesn't provide the adequate amount of space for the road wash to actually clean the line. It site on the frame and rusts away. This is a big safety issue if I was driving at speeds of greater than 25mph or started braking when I normally do. It happened in my drive way so no accident, but this can't be the right way to bring that line back to the rear of the vehicle. This line controls all the rear brakes.
Brake line corrosion, causing line failure. Corrosion occurs at rear, behind the fuel tank.

1997 Dodge Ram 1500, left rear brake line failure located behind the fuel tank.
Performing scheduled maintenance on a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 a wet spot was located on a crimped fitting portion of the front brake hoss. Further investigation by lightly pressing and pushing on the affected area resulted in a total breakage and failure of the assembly. The failure is when the crimped steel portion of the connection breaks due to severe rust/corrosion on the affected area. Consequences of the failure could include a loss of braking effort resulting in a crash or loss of control of the vehicle due to its severely compromised ability to come to a complete stop when needed. The repair to correct the failure included replacing both front brake hoses, all associated hardware and bleeding the brake system. The failed parts were saved for documentation purposes.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500. When the contact tried to start the vehicle the brakes extended to the floor. The contact stated that a year ago the front brake lines on the vehicle were replaced. The rear brake lines were broken and covered with rust. The vehicle was being repaired when the complaint was filed. The dealer stated that they are aware of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 84710.
Having noticed a loss in brake fluid, it became a rust out brake line. This truck, has 107k miles. And this brake line is in the rear portion of the gas tank area, that connects to the rear system. This seems to be a problem with these Dodge trucks. As have found others with the same issues.
While driving in lowes parking lot going about 10 miles I went to stop the brake pedal went all the way to the floor I managed to stop without hitting anything after investagation found the brake line had rusted all the way throught this could have been deadly if this happen on the highway after talking to CO workers I found 4 more Dodges with rusted out brake line all rusted brake line was replace by me as I do not trust dealerships repair shops.
Brakes failed due to corroded rear brake line!!!!!.
Brake line corroded on drivers side rear behind gas tank. Replaced.
On 8/19/2009, I was traveling east on rt 360 in chesterfield CO, va in my 2001 Dodge 1500 pickup truck. As I approached the light at turner rd, I apply the brakes but the truck was not stopping as normal. I struck the Nissan in front of me in the rear. Damage done to both vehicles but thankfully there were no injuries. It was later determined that the steel brake line that runs along the inside of the frame rail had burst causing the rear brakes to fail. The insurance company responded to the repair shop and inspected the old brake line. It appears from several Dodge forums that this is a common problem with some model years but Dodge refuses to address the issue. I believe this to be a very serious issue as the next victim may not be as lucky as I.
