Front Air Bag Problems of Dodge Ram 1500 - part 1

2002 Dodge Ram 1500 cracked dashboard over air bag on passenger side . This problem seems to be happening too many Dodge ram pickups from the 1993 model year through 2005 model year. The edge of the cracked plastic is sharp and pose a serious injury probability in the event of accident and airbag inflation. A person can easily cut their finger or hand while cleaning the dash are servicing the vehicle.

Dashboard and cap is cracking up into jagged pieces. Should the air bags deploy, severe injury could result from being punctured from plastic shrapnel much more than the cause of the airbag deployment. I feel the manufacturer should implement a replacement at no expense.

The dash in my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 is cracking and falling apart (defective plastic)and Dodge/Chrysler will not stand behind it's product. The air bag is right below & connected to the plastic that has cracked. I am worried that if the air bag is deployed that this plastic (which is very sharp pieces) will be very dangerous to anyone in the vehicle. I also pick up my grandchildren every day from school and the dash on my truck has broken in so many places that it is now falling apart and huge pieces falling out. This plastic is very sharp and could slice open anyone around it. I have always kept my truck parked in a garage since I have owned it(2002)-so the sun is not the problem-it is a defective product that was installed on my vehicle when built. I have contacted my dealership twice and they tell me that there is nothing they will do about it.

Dash board is cracking into pieces actually disinegrating. If by chance cuts any wiring it could cut my lights out or something else I am not that familiar with the electronics of an automoblbile. Thank you.

Typical problems with cracked plastic dashboard on 1999 Dodge ram pickups (2) combined with failure of airbags to deploy. Both seem to be epidemic in proportion, unfortunately have experienced both. Dash is not safe with cracked, jagged plastic edges waiting to impale or slice you, assuming that flying peices wouldnt do even more harm if airbag had gone off. Same problem in dash on two personal vehicles, now reluctant to go anywhere in one that wasnt wrecked because airbag probably wont work in it either if something were to happen. I know mine isnt the only one, whover has controlling interest of Dodge this month needs to step up and address these issues. Ridiculous to think of replacing dash for $800 - 1200 with a part of no better integrity than the one it already had. More ridiculous is the fact they know the airbags failures are an issue on these trucks for years now and have done nothing to remedy the problem. It shouldnt be up to the customer to worry about these two critical safety items . I spent a majority of my working life in the Dodge business, have seen it from all angles, now as the irate and disguted owner of two vehicles that leave me with no desire to own/operate.

I had a wreck in my pick / up. I hit several trees and the air bags didn't deploy and as a result I hit the seat belt hard enough to break four ribs, and hurt my back. Not to mention the stab wound on my ankle.

My 1999 Dodge ram seatbelts are stuck and will not work. Their is a recall for them but Dodge says my truck is not one of the problem trucks the VIN number is not recalled.

It was 12/26/2009 I was driving a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 I was driving 50mph and swerved from deer to the left caught edge of road and mud and side swiped a tree then hitting a 5ft wide tree headon comming to a dead stop and the airbags never went off they were tested okay and the ohio state highway patrol said they should have deployed I also was told by state farm ins the same thing I then notified Chrysler corp and was sent a letter that it was looked at and they said it wasnt a direct front end hit I have proof from pics that it was and it was a defect and they will not stand behind anything all I asked was why they didnt go off and a truck to replace it due to having my life flash before me this should be a manatory recall to fix this or people will loose their lives and chryler corp doesnt care about saving lives please check into this and like I said I have pictures for proof that it was a direct hit at 50 mph.

Driving my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 a woman pulled out in front of me and I t-boned her on the passenger side going 45 totaled out her car my air bag never went off and the seat belt never locked causing me to go forward in to the steering wheel I bent the steering wheel with my left knee called Dodge and they sent someone out to look at it by the time they finally cam out it had been 11 day from the time I called them so the body shop had already started to repair my truck I received a letter in the mail today telling my that "your impact was not significant enough to deploy the front air bags" come on I was going 45 mph how fast would I have to go for them to go off.

Dashboard has broken apart and completely caved in leaving exposed wiring and turned broken pieces into projectiles if the air bag was to deploy. This should be a safety related defect due to the fact that it poses a risk to motor vehicle safety and exists in a group of vehicles of the same design and manufacture. I bought this 1999 Dodge ram in 2002 with about 40,000 miles on it. I now have 79,000. Shortly after purchase, the dash cracked. After about 10 cracks across the top of the dash in every horizontal direction. I went to the "5 star" local Dodge dealer and showed them the problem. They said that they had never heard of the problem and estimated $1500 to repair. Until now, I thought that I was the only one with the problem and assumed that this certainly wasn't a widespread problem that may be in line for a class action lawsuit. I ordered a custom fit mat to put over the cracks. The cracks have continued and are now going vertical on the instrument panel bezel. There are probable 15 cracks in all. In addition, the glove compartment plastic door frame hinge pin (part of the dash) broke off on the lower left side. I epoxied in a piece of wood dowel rod to make the glove box door work. Seems like the dash falling apart would set off the air bag or short the wiring to cause unsafe operational problem such as a fire. If the air bag deploys with a fragmented dash, will the sharp fragments become missiles that could injure or kill the driver or passenger? this appears to be a really unsafe condition. There are hundreds of complaints about this on the internet. Can you help put the pressure on Dodge for a recall to replace our dashes?.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 vehicle dash is cracked to where is loosely attached on the passenger side. Dash constantly rattles. This seems as though it will interfere with the passenger airbag since the dash is cracked around it. Plastic dash trim ring is also beginning to crumble which may be a safety issue in the future. Dash has been this way for several years but is beginning to grow worse at a much quicker rate.

The dash panels on my 01 Dodge 1500 ram quad cab truck have cracked and are falling apart. The holes in the dash have exposed wiring and electrical components. It appears the molded plastics used in the dash panels are deteriorating over time due to the sun's heat and rays. I suspect, like polypropolene tubing, all dashes made of this defective plastic will desinigrate. Anyway, after some research it seems that a aftermarket dash cover is the best remedy, however I'm concerned about the sharp edges of the old dash panel could cut some wiring over time and cause a vehicle fire.

2001 Dodge ram dashboard - I am the owner of a 2001 Dodge ram pickup. My dashboard has caved in and apparently, this problem is pretty common with this year and make. In addition to the wiring all now being exposed, I am now concerned about the extent of the damage in relation to its' proximity to the air bag on the passenger side of the vehicle. Due to the total exposure in the area of the vehicles' placement of the dashboard, which is now non-existent, it could possibly endanger a passenger's life while riding on that side, unless I turn the airbag function off. This apparently is a major defect in the Dodge line. There are indications throughout the website, but also specifically listing that there is no recall to date. I was told the same thing when I contacted my Dodge dealer locally.

Vehicle was involved in accident. Vehicle struck "jersey wall" at appx 50 mph. Neither frontal or side curtain airbags deployed. Vehicle was in accident 12 months prior and was repaired at Dodge dealership. Owner questioned dealership as to why. Minor injuries to driver in this second accident with the same vehicle. Owner contacted Chrysler corp and received a form letter response.

I was in a head on collision at 70 mph and my airbag's didn't deploy.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. The last 3 years my dashboard has been cracking. 3 years ago I went to the dealer service department at tidewater Dodge and the service manager stated they would not fix it under warranty and I left disappointed. He claimed it wasn't their fault. At the time I accepted his logic until lately I found out I am not the only one. Since then I have a neighbor with the same problem with the same year truck. I then learned that if you go on a computer search engine and type "Dodge dashboard cracks" there are numerous chat rooms and websites set up just for this problem. You will see how many people have the same problem without Chrysler acknowledging the problem is theirs. You don't see this problem in other trucks. We need help please. My concern is safety. It is cracking so bad I feel unsafe driving it because if I have a minor accident and the passenger airbag deploys, it will explode and send splinters of plastic at me and my passengers. I can't help but to shiver thinking of splinters, propelled under pressure, entering my eyes and/or neck in a small front end accident that deploys the airbag. Can you picture that? how would you feel? has this happened and someone thought it was their fault? I shouldn't feel unsafe in my vehicle and think Chrysler should take responsibility for faulty equipment. The dealer cost of replacement is $1,000. 00 - $1,200. 00 each. That is the reason they won't recall the problem. Is it a money maker for a failing company? I feel the dashboards came without uv protection and the sun has weakened the plastic. Chrysler has covered this up by obtaining a new dashboard supplier after they found the problem. I need to get this fixed soon for my sanity. Any help would be appreciated.

The dash was cracked when I purchased the vehicle over two years ago. There were cracks running over the area above the steering wheel and over the glove compartment, running into the area of the passenger airbag. It has steadily gotten worse. Just yesterday, 29 October 2010, the front cover quite literally exploded into fragments. The dash is currently not attached, it is just hanging. It stays in place for the most part but can very easily be lifted. I have seen, heard and read of many other Dodge dashboards with this same problem. If it is so prevalent, the manufacturer should be held responsible. A solution to this defect, be it a recall or reimbursement for repairs, is seriously past due.

Dodge Ram 1500 (2005) involved in a front end accident with a 2006 Volkswagen jetta (hit side of jetta). Traveling approximately 45 mph and hit brakes late as jetta turned in front of truck. Neither front airbags on the truck deployed. Six airbags in jetta deployed.

My 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup has a chronic case of cracked dash. This has been heavily noted from 1998 models through the 2004 models. This is extremely hazardous to passenger safety because if the passenger airbag should deploy the passenger of driver could be impaled by sharp shards of plastic from the fractured dash. I, like many others are experiencing cracked dash problems. I have had my 2000 Ram 1500 and now my 2001 Ram 1500 dashes crack and fall apart. The dealerships tell me that Dodge does not support repair or replacement of the dash. They no longer stock and back orders are ignored the dash and the instrument bezel that cracks over a short period of time. This is a safety issue as the 2000 truck was totaled in a wreck and I was injured by the dash debris and not the accident.

The right lamps are not receiving the proper current, only receiving current while utilizing the park lamp. No brake, hazard or turn lights. ! using the test light I tested every fuse within the power distribution center which indicated in no failures or blown fuses. Yet when utilizing the right blinker the relay has a muffled click that was barely audible unlike the left blinker where the relay sounded nice and strong with or without the trailer tow harnesses being utilized. Upon research I found that this was a very common problem with various years of Dodge lam?s. Ii believe that this problem that varies in low or high mileage Dodge truck?s needs to be addressed by the manufacturer due to the vast amount of complaints and queries for the same exact problems. I have been told by the dealer that the problem may be the integrated power module), $ 300. 00 just so happens to control everything including most importantly the air bag system.

I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, about six months ago I noticed a small crack in my dash right behind the passenger airbag. Now, I have three craks in the dash, two of them are about six inches long and the one above the airbag now goes all the way down the dash. I feel this is an issue that should be addressed due to the fact that it is a common problem in the second generation Dodge rams. Also, it should very easily be a safety concern as far as possibly ripping an airbag upon deployment, or sending loose pieces of jagged plastic flying in the event of a collision.

At this time I have two large cracks that have met to form a half moon shape that is sticking up from the rest of the dash. I also ha have two smaller cracks that extend from the windshield to the edge of the dash where it curves down to the airbag. I now have two Ram 1500 trucks with dash top failures here in texas. I was hit from the rear in my 2000 Ram 1500 and plastic pieces from the already cracked and cracking dash hit me in the face as it exploded on impact causing many minor facial cuts but none in my eyes. Being blinded caused me to loose control of my vehicle. I then hit a telephone pole. Air bag deployment occurred that cut both air bags on both sides with more shards of the dash. My 2001 Ram 1500 also has a severely cracked dash and is getting much worse. This occurred within 6 months of purchase. Chrysler corp. Refuses to respond and the dealership will not respond with any help claiming they are not responsible plus they have no parts or any way to fix the problem. They claim there are no plans for the parts to be manufactured either. This problem has become an epidemic to ram owners and will someday become and cause serious and potentially fatality problems. Accident reports are not showing the dash as a problem. They indicate the cracked dash was caused by the accident and is a result. Insurance companies claim it is a manufactures problems. The owner takes the hit unless he can convince the insurance adjuster to total the vehicle. The present political situation nation wide is stopping my pleas to my representative on my complaints and pleas for assistance to fall on dead ears. Dodge dealers are hiding the fact that a cracked dash Ram 1500 trade ins are being junked to hide this major issue. Thusly it is not getting the proper attention. At local auto auctions the Dodge Ram 1500's do not sell. As a note: there is also a major transmission problem as noted by most transmission shops all over the country. To my knowledge, nothing is being done to correct many and most of Dodge Ram 1500's problems because of the dashes. "get them off the road at the owners expense" is Chrysler corporations plan as per the factory representative when he was cornered. I have bought my last Dodge.

My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 was involved in a major crash resulting from the other car running a red light. The ram had major front impact and front driver side impact. The drivers airbag did not come out resulting in damage to drivers face, arm and wrist.

The parts needed to repair the vehicle were not available at the local dealership. The manufacturer was not alerted to confirm the parts were not available.

Four service dealers were contacted, who stated that the parts were not available. The manufacturer was also notified. The contact expressed a concern that the manufacturer took 3 months to notify the customers of the recall.

I have 3 safety recalls for my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. I have called union Dodge in garden grove,CA, where I purchased the auto, 3 times to schedule appointments to fix the problems. Each time I have been told that a part for one of the repairs is not in stock but that when the parts come in I will receive a call back. I'm still waiting for that call back? of course the letter and call I did get from union Dodge was asking me to rate their service as top notch so they can get the 5 star award from Chrysler!! I'm done dealing with union Dodge but would still like my 3 safety recall items fixed. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

I was in a frontal collision with a tree that hit in the middle of the front bumper. The approximate speed was 45 mph at the point of impact. No airbags deployed. Dodge sent an engineer to investigate it and found, per their letter dated November 16, 2006, "that there were no manufacturing defects".

Severe cracking of upper two-piece dash board. Multiple cracks running through dash, leaving open holes to wiring. Cracked dash shifting, could interfere with passenger airbag deployment.

Complete collapse of plastic dashboard and gauge bezel. The top of the dashboard had so many stress cracks that there were no gaping holes in the top. It was possible to access all of the wiring through the top of the dashboard. This seemed to be a safety issue as there was no structural integrity to the dashboard now if the airbags deployed.
