2 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/30/2018

I purchased my current truck band new and have been the only owner. I place the key into the ignition and it does not allow me to turn the key to crank the truck. It acts as if the anti locking device is keeping the key from turning. My previous Dodge Ram 1500 pickup I purchased new had the same problem. I had to replace the ignition switch at my own cost. I have seen several recalls with other Chrysler products doing the same exact thing. It appears to be a reoccurring problem. The vehicle is in the stationary position and has left me stranded. I have seen youtube video of the person tapping on the end of the key while in the ignition which seems to work on occasion.

7 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

Today I went to the Dodge dealership so they could diagnose an electrical problem I was having in my truck. They told me that part # 56045112ae, 56051949ad need to be replaced. Which are the ignition switch and the ignition wire harness. Problems I was having were the power windows would not go up or down without the steering wheel all the way in the up position. The motor blowers for my a/c and heat would sometimes not work. And my air bag light was on in the cluster panel. They told me that the wires were burnt, but could not tell me the source of the problem. I told them that there must be completely too much current going through those wires to cause a problem like that and they agreed. I was then told that because of the wires being in that condition the airbag could possibly go off at any time and/or cause a fire. Why is there not a recall on this issue. When doing some research on the web this is an on going problem with Dodge trucks and jeeps. Also part number 56051949ad has been discontinued so how do they expect to fix these problems. My truck also has the stalling problem when coming to a stop and accelerating.

Failure Date: 04/07/2015

The vehicle has shut off numerous times while driving due to a faulty ignition switch.

9 Ignition Switch problem of the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/25/2015

My wife and 2 kids (4y and 6y) were driving over railroad tracks at about 25 miles per hour when suddenly the car turned off. Power steering and brakes were suddenly no longer available and my wife steered in the middle of an intersection before she came to a halt. Luckily nothing happened. She switched the transmission into p, the car started flawlessly and she parked it to call her mom to pick her up. I then got to the car and wondering what might have happened. Reading about ignition locks causing this symptom, I lightly tugged on the ignition key while idling. The car turned off easily. Knowing my wife puts whichever car key she needs on her key chain, I suspected that this may have been the problem. I tried it out and -sure enough- repeated the event. She normally drives her 2013 Jeep wrangler which has the identical type of ignition switch. This one however does not turn off the car when one pulls on the key while the car is idling in gear. I was surprised when I did not find a lot on issues with Dodge ignition switches and would never describe this occurence on a 7 year old car, if it hadn't been so terrifying. Never did I feel so unprotected! losing power and becoming a widower is really just one small tug away. . . . Thought I shared. . . . Of course I will get a new ignition switch.

Failure Date: 11/12/2014

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 35 mph and making a turn, there was a delayed response when the accelerator pedal was engaged. The traction control warning light illuminated continuously during the failure. On numerous occasions, the key became stuck in the ignition switch until after repeated attempts. In addition, the gear shifter moved out of gear when slightly touched when driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the clock spring would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

The ignition switch has gone out in my vehicle and I was advised at the dealership that there were approximately ignition switches out for delivery and there was a 3 week delay for getting in the part. 14 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/11/2013

I received notification from NHTSA of a recall for my Dodge ram truck. I have tried since June 11, 2015 to make an appointment with crowne Dodge of ventura, California and have received no response. I spent 30 minutes standing in line at the dealership services entrance and no live person came to inquire about my visit. I made an online appointment with crowne Dodge and received an e-mail response they had received my appointment request. I feel this is just another attempt to “Dodge” the responsibility of a safety recall. 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd slt 1b7hc16y2ts583404 ignition switch and electrical wiring. Recall.

15 Ignition Switch problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/08/2012

On July 8, 2012, the mother carried her 2 year-old daughter to her husband's parked 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup equipped with a manual transmission. The mother opened the passenger door, inserted the ignition key into the ignition switch, turned the key as the mother was trying to activate the air conditioner and cool the vehicle down before her husband came out to drive them home from church. The vehicle was in 1st gear and lurched forward when the key was turned. The speed of 2 mph at time of incident is an approximation only. The mother was struck by the moving vehicle which knocked her child from her arms to the pavement. The child suffered severe head trauma and was removed to the hospital by ambulance. The child later died in the emergency room. The accidental death was caused by failure of the clutch ignition interlock safety switch, compression spring, and attendant parts. This is the same defect involved in recall no. 14v795000 and is at least the second death caused by this same defect. The only difference is that recall no. 14v795000 covers vehicles back to only 2004, and this vehicle is a 2002 model year.

16 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

I bought an 04 Ram 1500 5. 7 hemi that had around 80k miles on it when I bought it in oct 2010. It was awesome the first and a half I had it, only minor repairs I. E battery, idler pulley, ignition switch. I did regular maintenance on it as well as oil changes. In late March 2012 I went to put gas in my truck and it would not let me put more than 10 or 15 cents in before it would "back fill" I was trying to figure out what the problem could be with that, then in early April 2012 I was driving home after running some errands, the truck had run great all day just like normal, but about 8 miles from house I hear this "thunk" and I have no power and I had this awful shaking and rattling noise. There were not even any warning lights telling we that there was something wrong, I called someone to tow it home that night. I did thankfully have another car to drive. In the months since I have been slowly tearing the engine apart with my dad, this week we finally pulled the heads and discovered that my # 6 piston was completely disintegrated and had punched a hole in my block! my original thought was that this was just a random fluke and it was just mine, but after reading on some Dodge forums I see that it was not just mine! this is ridiculous for an engine that has no more miles than this and had been properly maintained. My parents have a 1999 Ford f150 that has almost 300k on it and has not been maintained nearly as well. . . Read more...

17 Ignition Switch problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/19/2012

Over the last few years, I have experienced problems with my 2005 Dodge ram truck. Occasionally when slowing down to a stop light or making a left turn from a stop, the engine will cut off. I immediately turn the ignition off and then back on, and the trucks works perfectly after that. I first attributed it to a stall or bad gas, but now believe it is an ignition switch problem. I have contacted Chrysler regarding this, but they are unwilling to inspect my truck without first charging an exorbitant service fee. I feel this diagnostic fee is very unreasonable, as this defect with the truck is a safety hazard to the drivers around me. I have contacted Chrysler multiples times, and am now escalating this by filing this complaint.

18 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

2003 Dodge Ram 1500 1. Started to have some electical issues, power windows and heater blower motor would work intermittently. Also occasional smell of melting plastic. 2. After some time blower motor totally quit. Went online to trouble shoot problem and learned of recall on 2002 Dodge ram for identical problem. That was caused by melting ignition switch. So I took apart steering column and found plug for my ignition switch melting and wire burnt and corroding. After finding problem and putting the plug back together blower motor started working intermittently again and when it is on wire gets extremley hot. Consequences would by loss of visability if windows fog up and or potential fire hazard. 3. Nothing has been done to fix the problem yet. Chrysler wanted me to bring my vehicle in and pay to get the problem diagnosed at thier dealer. Then they would work with me to get the problem fixed, not guaranteeing they would cover any or all of the cost. So I will probable fix the problem myself with used parts because I don't have money to pay Chrysler to fix a problem the are very aware about. Since they issued a recall on the 2002 ram that uses the same ignition switch as mine.

19 Ignition Switch problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/18/2010

When it is very hot and the windows have been up, the ignition switch will not turn. The steering wheel will not turn and the key will not rotate from locked position. I have contacted Dodge and they say they have made notes on the issue, but they don't see a problem that they are responsible for. If this was an issue that I would have control of creating - it would be my problem. This is an issue with safety in that if I had an emergency and this happened I would not be able to start my car. Or, have a car-full of groceries and find out the car won't start!!! bad enough I have to wait for the car to cool off when this happens. This is a summertime issue which makes me have to find shade or park where the sun doesn't shine into the front of the car. Problem seems to be a part (probably plastic) that expands when it gets very hot and prevents the key cylinder from rotating. This can't be the only car with this issue as Dodge would elude to . . .

20 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/02/2009

We own a 2003 Dodge quad cab pickup with 99000,00 miles on it. We were having the heater core and blend door replaced and notice d the blower was not working. The mechanic thought it was the resistor but come to find out it was the ignition switch wires that go to the blower motor were burnt at the contact points on the ignition switch. Due to the looseness of the connection prongs this has been going on for some time. I do believe this is a safety issue that if left unfixed would have caused a fire in the vehicle. I did keep the old part for your viewing. I also contacted Dodge to let them know about the problem and asked them if they were at least going to issue a TSB for this problem. Their reply was no. That's when I contacted you. We went ahead and had the mechanic replace the part due to the safety concern.

21 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Hvac blower intermittently working due to bad connection to the ignition switch. Window is constantly fogging. I do not feel that NHTSA recall no. 03v078 covered all vehicles affected as my vehicle falls 6 months short of the recall and will have to get the repair done at my cost. Looking up this problem on the internet and speaking with repair services this is very common past the 2002 manufactured trucks.

22 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/06/2009

Ac quit working. Turns out ignition switch is bad. I found that the ignition switch and wiring had burning evidence. Wiring brittle and cracked. Believe it is the same problem reported in the 1995 Dodge. Amperage issue when blower motor is on high to much for factory installed wiring. Could cause a fire!!!.

23 Ignition Switch problem of the 2007 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/25/2008

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. When the contact would shift into park, turn off the vehicle, and remove the key from the ignition, the vehicle would remain running. He called roadside assistance and the tow truck driver towed the vehicle while it was still running. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and a technician stated that the ignition switch was faulty. The vehicle was repaired under warranty. The failure mileage was 21,184 and current mileage was 21,439. Updated 09/16/08 updated 09/18/08.

24 Ignition Switch problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/16/2008

Ignition and key are defective. Ignition key can be removed from vehicle ignition during vehicle operation. Ignition key fell out of ignition while driving. Ignition key can be removed from ignition while vehicle is running and in motion. Vehicle sometimes does not need the key in the ignition to start the engine. If the vehicle is running the key can be very easily pulled out of the ignition assembly, the key just slips right out of the ignition. Chrysler has been notified and their response is the vehicle is out of warranty. I asked Chrysler customer service to forward the complaint to a higher up person in Chrysler and was told that after my phone call, that was the end of the issue and Chrysler takes no responsibility for the problem concerning a defective ignition switch. I spoke to Chrysler customer service at (800) 334-9200. The approximate incident date is approximate and the problem started six years ago and the problem is ongoing through today. An internet search yields countless other complaints for the same subject matter. The condition is unsafe and please look into the problem. Thank you.

25 Ignition Switch problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/25/2006

The heater/ac fan will continue to operate with the ignition key removed from the lock. Sometimes the circuit is energized immediately after the key is removed and at other times it energize's on its own. If not identified in time the fan will drain the vehicle battery. The local Dodge dealer claims they are unable to duplicate the problem. I suspect the ignition lock/switch is probably defective and is causing this problem.

26 Ignition Switch problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/16/2004

While driving in rain my wipers often stop working on high speed which make it difficult to see in a down pour. Also my blower fan for the a/c defroster heater etc. Stops blowing when tilt wheel is moved to some positions. It has proceeded to the point of not blowing at all and sometimes will start blowing when I am not in my truck with the key out of the ignition. I was told by a dealer mechanic that it is a faulty ignition switch and that he has changed several. He said it is caused from the wiring harness hanging to loose and repeated tilting of the steering wheel causes the ignition switch to break and have a bad connection. This is also probably what causes some trucks to stall while driving. These are all very dangerous situations if they occur at certain times.

27 Ignition Switch problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/13/2004

While driving vehicle lost power (no throttle response). Next the ignition switch went bad. The vehicle's steering column was out of alignment.

28 Ignition Switch problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/24/2003

I took my 1996 Dodge ram to the dealer for an ignition switch wiring recall. After the recall parts were replaced, my truck was not fixed. The wiring harness had overheated and damaged my ignition switch. This cost more money. There was also a special tool that my husband had to purchase to change the ignition switch. The plastic cover on my steering column had aslo melted. I would say my truck was very close to going up in flames. This is very upsetting to me because I feel this part should have been replaced along with the harness since the defective wiring caused this part to be damaged. I think Dodge should add this part to the list of parts changed when they service vehicles from this recall. I also believe they should reimburse me and anyone else who has had this problem. There was almost a fire, I know this because I have the old ignition switch and the plastic part on my steering column has a hole where it was hot, since I did not see a fire (my husband did smell something burning), I cannot answer yes to the question below that asked "was there a fire?". Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think something should be done before someone is seriously injured or killed. Something similar happened to a friend of mine who had a different make car, her son burned to death in a car. I shiver to think what might have happened if I had not found out about the recall on this vehicle.

29 Ignition Switch problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/02/2002

While driving at highway speeds, vehicle completely shutdown, but air conditioner was still running. Consumer felt this was an electrical problem. Consumer lost all power including steering and brakes and was forced off the road. Dealer replaced terminal to ignition switch.
