2 Wiring problem of the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/20/2018

Discovered manufacturing defect at electrical plug that sits above left bank where the exhaust manifold meets the exhaust pipe. Furthermore, the connector sits right between the block and the firewall. The connector and it's wiring have an extreme turn off of the plug and created such tension that the plastic convoluted tubing was pulled back from the wiring. All of the wiring to approximately 6 back from the connector is bare and the wires are touching one another. I feel that if the route of the wiring had less of an extreme bend and there was something to secure the wiring was in place, there wouldn't be this concerning issue. I have contacted my local dealership and the fca and they refuse to look at it without charging me money. I am an electrician by trade and I fear that this could affect a multitude of vehicles. The truck will randomly shutdown while driving regardless of speed,, and when sitting idle at times. Also, there are times when the transmission fails to react to the commands given with the gear selector. I'm unsure whether this is related or not.

4 Wiring problem of the 2007 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 09/07/2017

Vehicle shut off while driving causing loss of steering and braking. It gave code for bank 2 knock sensor and oil viscosity wrong. It would not start. Noticed smell from under passenger side. Found insulated harnessing in passenger side had caught fire possible due to short to chassis. Wiring was all in oem state, found no standoffs present to keep harness off chassis on horizontal run, standiffs are present in vertical run by oil filter. Replaced section of harness and documented with pictures. This is a hazard to all Dodge owners, flame in very close proximity to oil filter. I have documented all with photos and request compensation for my work to repair.

Turn my right blinker on and it stos then comes on again stops etc. Just never know what is going o happen. Village motors from millersburg OH said it was the wiring harness which they replaced 2 yers ago when I had the same problem.

10 Wiring problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/08/2015

Drove my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 to empty my trash, started back home and had driven less than 1/4 mile when the truck hesitated like it was going to stall out and there was some smoke beginning to come up through dash area on drivers side. Thinking I might have a busted radiator hose I immediately pulled over in the yard of person doing repair work on an old building. When I opened my truck door on drivers side flames shot between the inside of the door and seat. I jumped out of the truck but was not injured. The man saw flames shooting from the truck and I was very fortunate he had a fire extinguisher. He kept spraying the truck under the hood and was able to get the fire under control just as the volunteer fire department truck showed up. There were a lot hot spots and the fireman kept spraying it with water until it finally quit smoking. The main part of the fire was right at the front of the cab of the truck below the motor. You could see the fire burning from the side looking through the wheel wells. They said it had to be caused by a faulty gas line because of the location. All the electrical wiring including the wiring harness was melted. Thank goodness the man had the fire extinguisher or the whole truck would have burned. Very scary incident especially for a woman.

13 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 10/18/2014

Left rear brake light was going out intermittently, the "lamp out" light was illuminating on and off as if the bulb was going between working and not working. Changed the light bulb with the recommended 3057 bulb but it didnt fix the problem. Changed the bulb holder but still didnt fix the issues. Checked the fuse but it was good. Finally went under the rear to check if the wiring harness was loose and saw the wires for the rear lamp was pinched against the frame of the vehicle and the wire for the brake lamp was cut. There was really no give to the wiring harness; it was pulled extremely tight. Vehicle has never had any issues and nothing electrical has ever been touched before. The right tail lamp is working fine but the harness for that side was not checked. All wiring is original from factory. Vehicle was bought new from a Dodge dealership and we have been the only owners. We feel this is a safety concern if the brake lamps are not working all the time.

14 Wiring problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

While driving on the freeway at night the headlights, tail lights, blinkers, 4-ways, brake lights, and tail lights went out and when slowing down to pull over the engine stalled. The engine started back up to get to the side of the road and stalled again with no warning. The truck now stalls at all stop lights and stop signs and is not giving any codes. The truck now has a large draw and kills the battary shortly after turing the truck off. The truck is still in the shop and so far the fcm, pdc and some wiring has been replaced but the power draw persists and the engine stalling still persists. Researching the issue on the internet this is a comon problem on this vehicle and has been for quite some time. This is a very dangerous issue and needs to be addressed.

15 Wiring problem of the 2012 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/09/2014

I had both the high and low beam on the passenger side out on may 9th. I took it to the dealer and told them that it seemed strange both bulbs would go out at the same time. The dealer pulled the front end apart and changed both bulbs on the passenger side and told me they were burned out and are now fixed. May 10th at 6:30am I got up and started my truck and once again the passenger side high and low beam light was out. The dealer told me the technician actually made sure it was only the bulb no wiring or connection problem and does not know why it is out again. It is very dangerous and also a violation to be driving with a headlight out in the state of maryland. Several other people have reported this problem with the faulty electrical connection to the headlights and something should be done before their is an accident or worse. It is now in the same dealer again to see what excuse other than a bulb issue they can come up with to charge me again. I would highly recommend Dodge look into this and fix it immediately.

16 Wiring problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

My 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 mega cab began to have problems with the rear controls, I. E. The door locks, power windows, speakers, dome lights. Doors to not lock or unlock nor does the safety auto lock work. Window rolled down but not up. Vehicle was taken to the place of purchase and discovered that under normal use of the rear door, the wiring harness had several broken wires in it. It was fixed for $340. I believe I now have problems with the passenger side wiring harness. Is this a manufacturer defect? how do the wires break inside the harness which are also inside the door and/or body of the truck. I now know of two other people with Dodge Ram 1500's that are also having the same problem. I have two small children, I should not have to worry about their safety because of faulty wiring!!.

17 Wiring problem of the 2013 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

On about 3jul13, my wife and I found out that the running lights for our travel trailer weren't working. All other lights were working, so we continued driving during daylight hours. On returning home, I found out that the trailer lights worked when hooked up to a battery, but there was no power going to the appropriate prong in the wiring harness even though the running lights on the truck functioned. I brought the truck back to the dealer where a fuse had to be replaced in the truck. The service manager then told me he had the same problem with his truck - the trailer was plugged in when the truck was started - the lights had been left on "auto" or the radio was left on. This presents a severe safety hazard if I'm pulling a trailer at night and forget to turn my lights off auto or leave my radio on prior to starting the vehicle. I only do light checks on my trailer once a day, not every time I stop for a break. The trailer has not been a cause of shorts on previous vehicles.

19 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

There was an electrical failure in the wiring system from the fuse block this is known to be a common problem with the Dodge rams the abs light, brake light and airbag light as well as the engine light all come on also the odometer and speedometer also stop working. This stops the abs system from working as well as the airbags I have had to change the fuse block as well as the rear speed sensor, and the dash cluster because of this over a three year period now, the first time all of my lights stopped working as well as the dash gauges and door locks. Why is this and ongoing problem with this and nothing seems to get done about it the first time I got a copy of a service bulletin and Dodge tried to tell me it was only good for diesel models and I have the same issues. There seems to be a real history of these problems with this vehicle and the dealers are all aware of this.

20 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab and have had to replace all the heating and cooling components in this truck in the past few years. Last year I started having an issue with the heat/ac not working unless the steering wheel was in the up position. I had all the parts to the control board behind the dash replaced, all new knobs, etc. Still didn't work. Then we started diving into these sites that talk about all/any issues that people are having with this model truck. So we see that we need to replace the register in the steering column. Well that worked for about a week and now, again, if I want ac/heat I have to raise the steering up and drive. Not very safe!! are dealerships honoring recalls for this part still? what about all the wiring? does that need to be replaced to stop the constant blowing up of the register? this is a great looking truck but the money dumped into it to keep it on the road is outrageous. I could have purchased two trucks by now.

21 Wiring problem of the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/21/2013

The wires in the wire bundles on the rear quad cab doors continue to break when opening the back doors overtime which causes the door locks, speaker, power windows, and alarm system not to function. This has now become a common problem on multiple year Dodge ram trucks. The wire bundles should be recalled and fixed free of charge. This has happened to my vehicle twice now, and it is expensive to have the dealer fix the wires when you know they are going to break again. There should be a recall for this defect. Search youtube and find multiple videos on what causes this problem. Example videos here: 02 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab - broken rear power locks, speaker, window motor. . Read more...

22 Wiring problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

In the 1994-2001 model year Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks there is no relay in the wiring circuitry use for the headlights. When the ram was redesigned in 1994, the engineers did not find it necessary to change the 40-year old design for the headlight system; feeling only the need to use a larger gauge wire to handle the excessive heat of the halogen bulbs. Unfortunately, neither the wires nor the switch or internal rheostat (for the instrument panel lighting) could handle this load and the following near tragic even has been an all too common occurrence. A recall (or at the very least a TSB has been issued for the 3500 model Dodge rams, which are comprised of the exact same switch and wiring, but nothing has been noted about the 1500 or 2500 models. I cannot understand this, and this is the very reason I feel compelled to be writing this complaint in the first place. One night I was driving along the freeway at about 55-mph when the headlight switch, relay and connected wiring all became overheated, causing them to melt. Becoming frantic, I was able to quickly wiggle the dimmer switch (combination/turn signal switch), then the headlight switch until I got them to come back on. During that episode I had them go out on me about 4 times that I recall. Currently the vehicle remains unfixed and is not drivable at night. Being a mechanic, my first thought was to check the relays and fuses to see if they were blown or bad. To my dismay, I could not find any relays! this was how I discovered, through some online research, about the recurring problem with the headlight switch- how I was not alone in this situation and the rest of the aforementioned paragraph. I will gladly be available for phone calls, questions, and to take pictures of the parts in question.

23 Wiring problem of the 2011 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

Began when I purchased truck of integrated brake failure later turned into bad instrument cluster, visor short, new brake controller and lots of hours. When starting vehicle wipers come on, no interior lights, no turn signals (inside or outside) no heat, no radio no trailer brakes. Now vehicle has been at Dodge for 2 weeks. They replaced, instrument cluster, wiring harness, tpms and problem remains. Very unsafe to drive as no indicators and wipers constantly on. Problem began around 1 month after purchase and plagues me today. I have extended warranty and I am charged 100. 00 per visit. Customer care will not provide me with options I must dictate my choices. Terrible service.

24 Wiring problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

The tail light function of the trailer wiring harness stopped functioning. Still have use of brake and turn lights. This is hard to catch on a visual test since I usually check turn and brake functions. Towed for weeks before I was told of the malfunction. Therefore cannot see trailer at night. Dealership could not fix problem.

25 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 11/13/2010

Dodge ram gadge cluster goes out about 5 years after the recalled wiring harnes was fixed. When the gauge cluster went out I had to pay to have that harness fixed agin because thats what shorted it all out. Also the rapair shop was not able to put back my milage to 63,xxx. It now shows 119,xxx. Thats almost 55,xxx miles more then I dove in to that shop with. Yes I have all the old parts. This is a very common thing for this trucks. Dodge does not want to make it right.

26 Wiring problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4dr 4wd. I just had my truck inspected and all lighting worked fine. I was pulled over easter evening by a new york state trooper and notified that my rear lights were out including parrking, running, and license plate lights, as well as front running lights. I was informed to turn 4 way flashers on while driving at night to my destination. After checking all fuses,b bulbs, relays and wiring are all good. When I checked for similiar problems via internet and my local mechanic and a Dodge dealer I was notified that the fuse box would have to be replaced and the front control module. This is a part that should not go bad as you have to change the whole box for just lights going out, which Dodge says is an unserviceable part that corrodes within a sealed box?and that has to be changed as a whole unit. There are numerous complaints via internet etc of this problem and that Dodge will not budge to fix the problem that they are very aware of occuring. The consumer should not have to pay for this repair estimates are anywhere from $250 to over a $1000 dollars just to replace the defect. And also that Dodge has a back order of these because of the numerous problems with them. The consequences are that the lights will go out without notice or a bulb out light being signalled theeby causing another vehicle to rearend or seriously injure someone without these lights at night. The trooper stated also that he has seen this before on Dodge trucks.

27 Wiring problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup has electrical problems with headlights. When switching from high beams to low beams. The high beams go off but the low beams do not come back on. I have had two Dodge dealers plus another garage look into fixing this problem. Both Dodge dealers say they could not verify my complaint. The last Dodge dealer performed another electrical wiring trace diag and claims all circuit operating as designed. Yet they continue guessing at what might cause the problem and charge me for replacing parts they cannot verify where ever bad or even causing the failure of the low beams to come back on. The normal event is that when an oncoming vehicle is coming at me and I need to turn off the high beams. The high beams are turned off without any low beams coming on. This creates an immediate threat to life and property of both autos operating on the same section of roadway. This problem currently has been going on for about two months. After this second Dodge dealer charged me for replacing another switch (another guess by their mech). It took me less than 30 seconds to show a witness driving with me what the problem is as the low beams failed to come on after only three attempts of switching high beams to low beams. Yet Dodge dealers still says everything is working as designed. There is clearly a defect here in design. To date it has not resulted in a crash but there is no telling when the low beams will fail to come on when driving and they are needed. The first time I had this problems was at mileage 77,439 back on 11/08/05. The problem seems to clear up after the first Dodge dealer had replaced the multi-function switch. But now the problem is back again. So the second Dodge dealer did not feel this switch would of gone bad again after just 37,000 miles of use on this switch.

28 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

The anti-lock brake controller in my 2004 Dodge ram pickup truck caught fire and burned. The wiring harness completely melted through wires and all, and the brake control mechanism itself melted and burned. The part was inspected by Chrysler but in their determination since I am the second owner of the vehicle they are not responsible for any repairs. The service manager at my local Chrysler dealer has told me that he has seen this problem before, and I have been told by independent service tech's that this is definitely a manufacturers defect. That the braking controller is drawing more amperage than it should be. Chrysler has told me that there is nothing more they will do in this situation.

29 Wiring problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 08/30/2008

Potential safety issue. When the engine quits, power steering is lost. With the small steering wheel and low gear ratio, extreme effort is required to steer. The Dodge 2000 Ram 1500 pickup also has a computer for the engine. This has caused the engine to shut down suddenly and steering became extremely difficult. This has happened three times Dodge has not been able to determine if the computer or the wiring is at fault. To replace the computer costs $750 with no certainty this will fix the problem. Chrysler/Dodge has not been willing to assist.

2001 Dodge quad cab pickup has failing wiring in steering column which makes truck die while driving . Which in turn there is no power brakes or steering and no electrical functions that makes the truck run . Dead on the road literally. Who knows at what speeds this problem may accure. Luckily it happened to me while going slow and I was able to stop the truck. Truck only dead so far to my knowledge . No known human deaths yet that I have heard of from this. If problem is not fixed with wiring harness that no death thing will change soon im pretty sure do to this problem. Id like to do my best to keep my family and other families safe. This needs to be dealt with before someone does die unnecessarily in an accident that can be avoided by replacing the problem part of the pickup.

31 Wiring problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 03/17/2008

Have had problem with abs light coming on, and more frequently engine coming to a stall when stopping, believed to being brought on by rapid stopping with abs system activating. Have had problem "fixed" twice already -- moisture in c. A. B wiring, water damage several inches into harness with subsequent corrosion, currently in shop being fixed for the 3rd time. . . The engine stalling just started happening within the last 2 months however.

32 Wiring problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 01/18/2008

This problem with the power seat is very unsafe and it is a good thing that I'm am somewhat mechanically incline and thought to pull the fuse out just as I could see the smoke and the white harness under the seat was red just ready to ignite so just picture if it would have been someone that is not m. Incline and would not think of pulling the fuse I guarantee a fire would break out under the driver seat. . . I am very unhappy with this because this could have been my wife and 3year old son driving in the truck alone and I guarantee that she would not have thought to pull the fuse out or this could happen to someone else that has the same truck. . . Also I have not take the truck in to the Dodge dealer yet because I can't afford a big repair bill . . . This is a big safety hazard and I think there should be a recall.

33 Wiring problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500

Failure Date: 10/23/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge 1500 quad cab. The contact was pulling into a residential driveway at relatively low speeds. He utilized the tilt adjust for the steering wheel and when he lifted upward, the electrical components of the vehicle failed. When he adjusted the steering wheel back downward, the electrical components became operable. The contact repeated several times and the failure occurred with each instance. The dealer discovered that the wiring harness wires were too short and was beginning to loosen. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred and the headlights failed. The high beams were the only front-end lights that would operate. The contact was concerned that the failure could potentially cause a crash. Updated 01/20/11 updated 04/20/11.
