Dodge Ram 1500 owners have reported 63 problems related to wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Dash is cracking in numerous place and falling in. This is causing wiring harness to be exposed to sunlight and to break down. The vehicle has since developed electrical issues due to the insulation on the wires breaking down.

My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 has a dash which began cracking several months ago. The cracks have gotten progressively worse in size and number. A little over 3 months ago a large portion of my dash caved in exposing the wiring underneath to direct sunlight. Also more recently, the molding around my instrument panel is cracking. This could become a hazard should the wiring melt due to not being protected from sunlight. No recall has been made by Dodge and I am not in a position to spend several hundred dollars for a factory defect.

Front dash collapsed, pieces of broken dash have fallen into areas where wiring is. Numerous other owners of the same year/make/model have had exact same thing happen. Can't be considered safe driving around with a 24" hole in the dash with pieces loose within the electrical components, to date not considered a recall item by Dodge.
: the contact stated the vehicle stalled while coming to a stop and while idling. The dealership determined the seals in the electrical system of the transmission (wiring harness) leaked allowing water to get into the electrical system. The wiring to the wiring harness was corroded. The dealership cleaned several connectors and replaced a ground wire. The dealership informed the contact that if cleaning the connectors did not correct the problem, the entire wiring harness would have to be replaced.
Electrical fire, truck was not run or started in 26 hrs. Left is shaded area next to house in driveway. Fire was extinguished before any damage to house or property.
My 2002 Dodge caravan has numerous electrical problems. The passenger and back windows only work intermittently. The inside door panel on the driver's side is also becoming loose. The air conditioner started only working on high speed. Then it wouldn't work at all unless you giggled the key a certain way. Now it won't work at all. These trucks have been subject to a recall for this issue. "the electrical connector at the bottom of the steering column
contains an under-sized terminal for the hvac blower motor
circuit. " per the recall "dealers will install a wiring harness overlay to correct this condition" I contacted the dealer where I bought the monstrosity and he was rude and claimed this truck was not subject to that recall. I also called the national number and they refused to repair their defective vehicle. We live in florida and it is dangerous to have to ride in a vehicle without air conditioning. Our Dodge caravan also has a defective air conditioner. I rue the day I ever bought a Dodge.

I own a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4 wd pickup. I have had it for 3 years and have had numerous problems with the head lights cutting on and off, and then going off and not coming back on. I spent several hundreds of dollars to have the problem fixed, but it still does it. I have been told by mechanics that do this type of work for a living that this is a manufacturers defect in the wiring somewhere. And that there are several vehicles( Dodge trucks) with this same problem. I believe that Dodge needs to put out a recall on this issue and got the problem resolved. I like many people take my chances having to drive at night.

When headlights are on--usually at night--dash lights will dim and intensify intermittently while driving. Dome light has come on occasionally. I appreciated the service department's efforts to educate me on my vehicle the last time I brought it in for this problem, but I am fully aware of how the dome light switch works. 2. Turn signal does not function safely. Intermittently, while driving, right turn signal does not work when engaged. After trying a multitude of times to engage, signal comes on, but does not stay on constantly. Signal will blink, stop and start randomly. Sometimes, the opposite signal will blink. 3. When headlights and fog lights were on, fog lights and/or headlights have cut out. This was not a result of switching to high beam.

Rack & pinion steering leaking on left side. Transmission rough. No dash lights. Blower motor works seldom. Dangerous and expensive repairs. Seems like these have widespread transmission and electrical problems.
I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with a hemi it has a stalling and idle drop problem. I have almost hit other car due to the engine stalling loss of steering and brakes. I have taken my truck in had the upgrade done stalling was less now only twice but idle drops to 300 rpm and bounces around truck shakes like its going to stall then smoothes out and rpms go back to 1100 or so. Dealer just keeps telling me they are working direct with Chrysler corp on this and they will keep in touch. They have yet to call me I call them once a week to see what is going on and get the same story the are working on it. . .

consumer states he owns a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up truck. While hauling a trailer, the wires from the trailer became caught between the trailer and the trailer hitch of the vehicle. This caused the wiring harness system to burn out. This caused the fuel gauge to fail, it shorted out the fuse to the fuel pump causing the engine to stall. The consumer has contacted the service dealer. He stated this was a serious problem with the vehicle. The service dealer stated the wiring harness came with a 40 amp fuse. The consumer asked for a 30 amp fuse to be installed but the service dealer would not install this type of fuse. The consumer contacted the manufacturer; they said they would consider refunding the consumers money for repairing the vehicle. A new harness has been installed in the vehicle. There was a recall issued for the wiring harness, the recall service was performed August 2, 1999.

I have a 2004, Dodge 1500 slt ram, hemi sport, with 5422 miles on it, and on Feb 21, 2005, I watched as my truck burned to the ground ( literally ), I smelled something like plastic or burnt wire while driving, just prior to discovering my ( now ) parked truck, smoldering in my back yard. I went to investigate the smoldering, and open the truck door after not seeing any flame; however, once I opened the door it was as if someone had lite a flame thrower, and pointed it in my direction. The fire consumed the vehicle so rapidly, I am sure I would not have had time to remove a infant from it's car seat, had my son been in the truck. I allowed daimler Chrysler to send an engineer named bob whipple out here to my home. He took just a few pictures, jerked on a few wires, then returned to where ever he came from. He promised me a copy of his report; however, when I contacted daimler Chrysler, they blew me off with a " hey! it's not our fault", letter, I tried calling them and they stated that they had no other information for me, even though their vehicle obviously failed electrically, and was under full warranty.
Vehicle shut down at low speeds and when making turns, causing the steering and brakes not to operate. Manufacturer was contacted by owner.
Prior to taking delivery of the vehicle the battery was replaced. After several times of service for headlight failures, won't jump start, replaced battery, 7 mo. Later. After several other attempts was informed of need wiring harness due to after market replacement of headlamp. Replaced headlamps to factory and 3rd dead battery. I have invested $1100 since the second dead battery. Dealer says battery has nothing to do with electrical wiring harness???? most occurances during extended warranty period.
Wiring for my 2002 Dodge ram pickup 1500 quad cab light bulb continously burn out like in a sequence all tail lights. My brother in law has the same vehicle and had the wiring re done while truck was under warrantee because of a short. Is there any record of anthing like this happening?.
Vehicles electronics begin to go buzurk. Speedometer goes up and down, registers miles incorrectly, buzzer will not turn off, windshield wipers will not turn off. Taken to dealership and were told the wiring system is getting wet. On two occasions they packed wire with grease to keep wiring from getting wet. This quits working within a month or so. This last visit we were finally told that Dodge/Chrysler was aware this was a common problem with this model truck, but at this time they have not developed a part to repair and have not recalled. We were told they are unable to repair at this time.
The in-tank, electric fuel pump failed in my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up truck. The connector and wiring on top of the fuel tank was burned as was wiring in the power distribution center under the hood. This is potentially a very dangerous situation. Chrysler is replacing the fuel pump and repairing the wiring. However, they offered no warranty coverage and no coverage of the collateral damage resulting from the pump failure.
The consumer entered the vehicle, put on his seat belt and proceeded to drive home. While driving the consumer noticed that the belts tightened up. Then, he smelled smoke. The consumer looked down, and saw smoke coming from the under seat. The consumer pulled to the side of the road, unlatched the seat belt, looked under the seat, and saw smoke and fire coming from the plug. The problem occurred in the driver seat. The electric plug was unplugged to the seat belt. The plugs were replaced with a single stable plug.

The entire top dash is cracked and the dash around the gauges is also cracking. It rattles pieces are starting to come loose and expose wiring. It is a safety issue due to sharp edges and flying pieces in the event of an accident, some may be smashed into someone's face by the airbag. This has been getting worse over time.
Broken ignition wires in steering column due to use of tilt steering or general turns. According to the technician, the wiring in the steering column was improperly assembled leaving wiring exposed to pinch points which eventually broke the wires.
Transmissionwould not work at one point heard a loud bang and transmission started working again about a month later transmission started to screech and lock up causing rear wheels to lock up. Headlight switch defective or a short in the wiring have to beat on dash for lights to come on. Also a/c fan clutch locked up. Built ram tough is a bunch of crap.
While driving 10 mph smelled something burning which was coming from vents. Then, saw smoke from vent, and flames came from between bed and cab.
Ignition wiring failed.
Driving car; engine suddenly died; car caught on fire & was engulfed in flames; driver's side door failed to open; fire department arrived & put flames out; manufacturer's representative looked at car; insurance company had private representative look at car; fire originated under car due to location of electrical wires. Driver/passengers escaped unharmed.
Water was getting into the wiring harness, causing speedometer and odometer to register speed and miles although the vehicle was motionless.
