Underhood Wiring Problems of Dodge Ram 1500

Severely cracked dash board. Parts falling down into the electrical wiring including airbag area. Continues to crack in different areas. Major portions of the dash is caving in. Could cause gauge, lighting, airbag and heating/cooling problems.

Several electrical issues due to pieces from broken dashboard falling into dash area wearing and cutting away wiring insulation. Have had problems with headlights turning off and gauges not functioning properly. Also on several occasions have seen smoke rising out of large holes in dash area. Glare from mounting brackets reflecting off inside of windshield has created visibility issues on bright days.

Jan. 10, 2010 a very large crack appeared in the dash on my 2002 Dodge 1500 pickup at first it was just a cosmetic thing ,but now all the wiring is exposed the vehicle turn indicators do not work when it is bad weather the windshield wipers don't work and the defrosters will not change from cold to hot. I went to the dealer they advised me it was not their problem ,but I have learned that I am not the only one this has affected and my problem is a serious safety issue.

2000 Dodge Ram 1500. The dash is faulty and falling into pieces. Due to the dash literally falling apart, electrical wiring and electrical components are exposed. Concerned about the risk of fire or electrical shock. Also concerned about occupant safety if a crash occurred due to the lack of integrity of the dash.

My dash is cracked and broken. This has caused issues with my wiring as my speakers have stopped working. I am worried that this may lead to safety issues with life safety systems including air bags, headlights, turn signals, etc.

The dashboard on my truck cracked, then began losing pieces. Some pieces have been propelled at the driver and passengers by the air conditioning and when windows are open. Wiring problems appear to be developing (I am now receiving "lamp out" warnings). I have placed a dash cover to limit exposure to these hazards, but I have seen news reports that many other consumers are experiencing these problems, and that they continue to worsen.

1999 Dodge laramie 1500 quad 4x4. Dash has cracked and broke into pieces and fallen into dash wiring harnesses. Currently has only affected the front speakers. Concerns about the airbag and headlamp wires located in the same area.

The vehicle caught on fire on September 21, 2005. The consumer was driving at 65 mph when it caught on fire. The consumer heard a pop sound coming from under the hood area. The engine started making a clanking noise and surging. When the consumer pulled over there was smoke coming from the side of the hood. And when he lifted the hood it burst into flames. The consumer was not injured. A highway patrol report was taken, chp log number 1217. And fire report engine number 74 incident number 390. When the consumer contacted the insurance agency, they found that there was a recall for the wiring harness. This recall said that there was a possibility of engine fire. When he contacted the manufacturer, they told him that there was no recall on this vehicle.

My dash has been cracking out over the last few years. For about the last 10 months to a year I have had check engine light that has no significance to the way it runs, and the code is unrecognizable to auto garage. Also I have wiring problems for about the same amount of time. My dash lights will go out completely on their own and sometimes come back on, sometimes not. Also there are sharp edges on the plastic dash everywhere. As of two weeks ago, a section caved in, leaving a gaping hole about 6 by 8 inches in size. The cracks and hole look identical to pictures of other Dodge truck dashes I've seen on the internet and news. I feel that the sharp edges alone make for a safety issue, and since the cracks are so sharp and sever by the passenger airbag deployment site, I wonder if it would fail during deployment. Combined with the wiring issues that I and so many other owners are experiencing that a safety recall should be issued immediately before someone is seriously injured because of the faulty plastic used on all these Dodge trucks.

Truck was taken into the autowest Dodge dealership to fix taillights that didn't work. At the time the truck was in their possession there were 2 open recalls and they did not notify me of either. Nine months later the brakes, clutch, and power steering went out while I was driving it. Once I got it to the side of the road the engine was engulfed in flames. Truck is a total loss. Truck had 31,000 miles on it. Daimlerchrysler has denied responsibility for the problem.

1) there were no incidents leading up to the vehicles failures. 2) the headlights will not shut off when engine is on / the windshield wipers and pump are inoperable. They both occurred at the same time. Family was stuck on rainy highway for several hours. 3) Dodge service "thinks" the power distribution center may have shorted out the electronic control module and recommend replace both -$750 there is a back order for both parts - apparently there are many requests. We had an engine fire. Took it to the dealership in boerne, TX, where they fixed it, but did not report the incident to Chrysler. We worry about this happening again, and are not satisfied with their explanation. We fear we may have a safety problem. Chrysler wants us to deal with our insurance CO. , but they never were involved, except for the rental vehicle while ours was being repaired.

5 minutes after parking vehicle caught on fire.

Since December of 2001 verizon has had (6) Dodge full size vans involving 1998-2001 b vans. All (6) fires appear to have started under the hood. All (6) vans are equipped with the kelsey hayes ebc 325 anti-lock brake systems. Three of the fires occurred in the abs controller area of the engine compartment without the entire truck going up in flames because the drivers were able to have the fires extinguished before the fires got a real good start. Three of the fires happened while the vehicles were unattended and the vehicles were totally destroyed. On sept. 4th, 2003 a 2002 Dodge van was reported by the driver to have the abs pump running continualy for over 2 hours. The abs pump was extremely hot. Had to disconnect the battery to shut the pump off. When this van was brought into the verizon garage the abs light and the brake warning lights were illuminated in the instrument cluster and the abs pump was running continually. The van was towed to rothrock Dodge in allentown, PA. ,on 9-5-03 and left with danny david for diagnosis. When the scan tool was connected to the abs system they found (2) codes, main relay open and pump motor circuit open. At this time no repairs have been completed on this vehicle until Chrysler and a verizon fleet tech. Support specialist can look into this case. My son was driving on hwy 78 when the pickup lunged a couple of times. He was going to pull off the road to check for a problem. He had the cruise set so he thought it might be transmission problems. He looked in the rear view mirror for traffic behind him and saw flames and smoke coming from between the cab and the bed. He immediately pulled off and told his finance to get her baby out because they were on fire. When he opened his door the flames errupted into the cab and he had dive out through the flames. The pickup exploded about one minute after they got out. They lost everything in the truck.

Consumer states vehicle caught on fire. Dealer notified.

I turned my fan on to cool the inside of the truck and after a few minutes, it shut off. A while later, I tried it again and it worked, but soon shut off again. I took the truck to the dealership and they told me they cleaned the air intake out and it was full of leaves. They told me that is why it shut off. The problem continued. A few weeks later, I got the recall notice about the wiring being too light and it was over heating. The dealer did the repair. It worked fine for a good while. Eventually it started shutting off again. Sometimes I could tilt the steering wheel to a different location and it would come back on. I flipped the access panel down to find the repair, they clipped the two lighter wires and plugged in to I believe 10 gauge wire in their place. The heavy wires are too stiff to flex and when pushed certain ways the fan shuts off. I also noticed where the wires are plugged in, the wires are so hot you can barely touch them. I don't feel this was a very good fix for the problem, since although the fan does not shut off due to overheating, it still is heating up under the dash and may cause a fire under the dash.

Vehicle started to smoke just as the consumer had parked it and got out. Black smoke was puring from under the hood. Vehicle was totaled Chrysler was sending someone out to inspect and determine cause of fire.

While driving engine check light will come on. Then, had taken to dealer where they had replaced it. Few months later, had happened again while driving. Engine check light came on brigther. Then stalled, and vehicle caught on fire. Please provide more information.

There was a partial fire under the hood near the steering column on the drivers side, fire originated at the elctrical distribution panel from the vehicles charging system. (claim#43-r794-475).

While driving on the interstate noticed a foul smell, which seemed to be plastic burning. Consumer cut the air conditioning off, suddenly clouds of smoke poured from under the engine. Consumer pulled over to discover there was a fire coming from under the hood. Also, cruise control and abs have stopped working, and all 4 tires had to be replaced after 15000 miles.

Electrical fire originating under the hood. Vehicle was totaled.
