1 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/20/2008

I noticed automatic transmission fluid leaking under the truck when returning from a trip. Close inspection revealed that two of the transmission lines had been rubbing together which resulted in a break in one of the lines. Fortunately, I noticed it before the transmission had lost enough fluid to fail. Had I been on a long trip towing a trailer the results of a highway speed transmission failure might have been far more serious, especially on a mountain road. The line should be replaced. This appears to be a design/manufacturing/assembly defect.

5 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 07/03/2003

Transmission cooler line needs replacing. The cooler line has a plastic coupling in it that could melt and cause a fire or sudden loss of transmission under load. Dealer will replace a cooler line on a gasoline engine per recall but not on a diesel. My truck is a diesel, and think that the line should be replaced as the plastic coupling melted on a friends truck that is the same as mine (diesel). I called the Dodge dealer and they will not replace the coupling/line as not gasoline engine. I feel this is a safety hazard effecting all modles with this plastic copuling.

I believe this is covered in your recall 97v084000 - transmission cooler line to transmission split and or fitting failed causing loss of all transmission fluid. Facotry dealer vaguely referenced recall and I located it on your web site. I contacted daimler/chriysler recall center at 800-853-1403 and they took complaint reference # 9992910 and then told me that there was no such recall on item and your 97v084000 was a technical service bulletin. Local dealer indicates this recall does not show on their database. Some indication that it was over two years old. My insurance had $340 tow bill and I was out $278. 43 in repairs. I noticed extreme amount of smoke from under vehicle and was able to stop before damaging transmission other than running out of fluid. I would like to know if there is a recall and what is going on here. Thank you for your assistance.
