1 Manual Transmission problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/03/2005

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving 60 mph in fifth gear, the contact heard a popping sound and the vehicle began to coast. The contact had to downshift into fourth gear. The vehicle had to be driven for approximately 200 miles in fourth gear. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they discovered that the fifth gear nut detached and needed to be replaced. This is the second time the nut has backed off and needed replacing. The current mileage was 74,000 and failure mileage was 59,727.

2 Manual Transmission problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 05/27/2004

When shifting from fourth to fifth gear the bolt holding 5th gear in place came off the shaft which allowed the 5th gear to move and no longer be in position to function. This problem feels as if you were shifting from forth gear to neutral instead of 5th gear. Dealer was familiar with this particular problem and indicated that it's common to these vehicles. Consumer feels that Chrysler should be responsible for a recall and should cover the cost of repairs.

3 Manual Transmission problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/20/2004

It apparently a known fact that the tension bolt in my 1999 Dodge 2500 standard transmission has a habit of backing out and damaging the entire transmission. This has occurred in my vehicle and I understand that there is a technical bulletin out on this due to its a common problem. This is clearly identified by Dodge customer complaints and also by the dealership doing the repairs. Why is this not a recall issue. My truck has been used 95% on freeway. It has 119,000 miles on it. Being a diesel with what was considered the toughest transmission built, it should be good for at least twice this mileage if serviced properly which I have done. The oils were all changed less than 30,000 miles back and there was no indication of anything going wrong. This repair will cost me approximately $3,300. 00 and fortunately did not damage too much or it could easily exceed this amount. I paid 37,000. 00 for this truck and it should perform better than this or be backed by Dodge within reason.

4 Manual Transmission problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 07/20/2003

Truck makes a metallic knock noise above 40 mph push in the clutch and the noise goes away. Have taken it to the dealership several times and have driven the truck with service writer and 2 mechanics. They have heard the noise but do not know what it is or what to do about it. I have also complained to diamler Chrysler and they are unwilling to do anything.

5 Manual Transmission problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 06/08/2002

5th gear failed while going down a slight (~4%) grade while using the engine and the exhaust brake. Fortunately the speed was slow enough that it was possible to downshift. I consider this a safety hazard. If the speed had been higher or it was not possible to downshift an accident could have easily occurred. This is not an uncommon problem with the 5-speed transmission in the Dodge cummins diesel trucks. There is some information on the internet indicating that this is rather common. This problem appears to be a design flaw. The repair invoice indicates that a 'nut package" was required to prevent this from occuring again. This indicates that the original design is flawed. This should be a recall item, but probably isn't and won't be because of the cost to fix ($675. ) I have submitted a complaint and request for repair reimbursement to Chrysler. It has been denied because of the time or mileage limitations have been exceeded. However, it is both a safety issue and a design flaw, and both should be addressed.

6 Manual Transmission problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 2500

8 Manual Transmission problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/23/2001

While driving on the highway the fifth gear in my transmission fell off the shaft. Dodge has issued a service bulletin, sept. 25,1998, but has not issued a recall. I wonder if that somehow this might cause an accident. The service bulletin number is 21-10-98 rev. A.

9 Manual Transmission problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/01/2001

Transmission began shifting at 50000 miles, at 70000 miles, vehicle would not go in reverse and would not shift into 3rd gear, dealer replaced transmission at 74000 miles.

10 Manual Transmission problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 11/20/2000

12 Manual Transmission problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 02/10/1999

While driving at freeway speed 5th gear suddenly lets go; acts like suddenly pressing clutch while at speed. Problem appears without warning, startles driver and leaves driver without power to avoid vehicles approaching in rear. Only response is to move to right without power to avoid accident. Had repaired by az dealer first time with "new redesigned" parts and same problem happened exactly one year later on 2/10/00 at 87615 miles. Problem fixed with same parts again by CA dealer. This is a safety issue. The truck is not capable of driving in 4th gear at freeway speeds (truck has 4:10 ring and pinion). Both transmission mechanics have repaired several vehicles with same problem.

13 Manual Transmission problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 06/01/1997

Transmission was destroyed due to loss of fluid. Nlm on one occasion, while pulling utility trailer, 2 tires delaminated. All 5 tires had to be replaced. On a second occasion, two tires delaminated on the 1996 jaco 28 foot 5th wheel trailer causing damage to the trailer. All five tires on the trailer were replaced. On a third occasion, right front tire (wrangler at lt245/75r16 m+s dot md11 btov 197 234r) delaminated on the truck. Goodyear paid 50 percent prorate of four tires based on tread depth. However, consumer thought goodyear would pay 100 percent of the cost on the factory defect tire and consumer would pay for remaining three tires. Consumer paid for the four new at/s wranglers.

14 Manual Transmission problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

6 speed standard transmission seized up while driving at 10-15 mph, causing vehicle to skid to a stop and completely die without warning. Vehicle was towed to dealer, who will replace transmission with same design. An insurance adjuster stated to consumer that transmission was not strong enough for a 24 valve diesel engine.
