1 Driveshaft problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 08/26/2017

We were driving down a freeway and on our way to the beach and suddenly the truck vibrated violently and we heard a loud noise, we were able to pull almost to the shoulder when the truck came to a complete stop. We tried to restart it but it won't run, the drive shaft fell off the truck and was lying on the middle of the highway, the rear wheel was locked. We were lucky that we were driving early in the morning when there was not much traffic, if not that would have caused a very serious if not fatal accident. We have 4 people in the truck towing a boat and my wife is 3-month pregnant. We were thankful that there was a shoulder there for us to react in about 3 seconds we got before it broke down completely. We could have lost our baby or ourselves if there were a lot of traffic moving fast. Usually a little later in the day. We waited almost 5 hours for the tow truck to come, and have to ask for help to take us home. The truck was towed to aamco nearby and has been there for 12 days waiting for them to order parts. We were told that the u-joints were bad and not installed correctly that caused the drive shaft to fell and destroyed the whole rear end bottom. The repair cost is almost $2000. From my research, there have been many complaints about this as a common problem in Dodge ram, and Dodge had a recall on this but only on certain models and years and ours is not included which it should have been, to prevent a deadly accident. I contacted a Dodge dealer and they just said it's caused by wear and tear, but wear and tear shouldn't be a reason it can cause a deadly accident.

2 Driveshaft problem of the 2008 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 02/10/2015

Vehicle has a vibration starting at 50 mph that appears to be due to a drive component. Diagnosed and replaced the drive shaft rear u-joint. Some play also found in the left front u-joint (4wd) that was replaced 8 months ago. This is the third time in 4 years that u-joints had to be replaced on this vehicle.

3 Driveshaft problem of the 2014 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

The rear differential locked up while towing our RV, which caused us to jacknife and subsequently flipping our RV. The RV is a total loss and the truck has significant damage. There was a loud pop or bang and then maybe a second or so before the rear end seized. The truck shut down during this which left us with no brakes for the RV and the truck almost flipped with RV. The mechanic at the service center showed us the spider gear shaft in the differential, which had broken loose somehow and jammed against the driveshaft gear, thereby locking the differential and powertrain. This seems to be a common problem with ram trucks as the investigations have been going on for years. We were lucky enough to have just exited the freeway before this happened. If this had happened on the freeway, my wife and myself could have been killed and any number of drivers that were around us. The freeway we had just exited was pretty busy with semi's and cars alike. This kind of catastrophic failure on a new truck with only 4700 or so miles is unacceptable and needs to be addressed.

4 Driveshaft problem of the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

I was driving west in road TX-375-loop heading the i10, I took an exit for i10 east wich is a bridge. I took it and then I heared a sound on the rear wheels so I slowed down, after that the sound stopped and I continued to incorporate to i10-east. After I took the i10 I was driving around 60 mph when suddenly I heard the sound again but this time after a few second a different sound appeared and the rear wheels stopped resulting in completely lost of control. My vehicle started to go with no direction and than took me out of the highway, once I was on the side of the road the vehicle make a 180 degrees turn and I stopped heading wrong way. I was so lucky because there were some traffic signs and I didnt crash any of them and also because even though that highway is always full with traffic I didnt crash with any other vehicle. Once I took a look of my truck I saw that the driveshaft was separated from the rear axel. I didnt filled a claim before beacuse Chrysler told me they were going to fix it since that incident happened because of a recall they didnt fix before. The recall number is m34 and its been 3 months and after I could have died in that accident they havent helped me at all. My vehicle is still in the dealer and Chrysler wont authorize to fix it.

6 Driveshaft problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/02/2007

I was driving on an access road with my wife when a vehicle pulled out in front of me. I hit the brakes to avoid hitting the other vehicle. I maintained control of our vehicle and stayed in the same lane not hitting anything, but we heard a pop and the vehicle started shaking making it hard to control. I could not keep the steering wheel straight anymore. Then we smelled a burning odor and heard something scraping the ground. We pulled over and saw that the 4 wheel drive shaft was hanging down. We then talked with the service advisor and he informed us in his opinion that this was the result of an accident and we would have to file under our insurance. We looked at the damage and saw a small dent in the front differential casing, broken drive shaft, two suspension arms bent, and dent in oil pan from the axle being pushed back. We informed the service advisor that we did not hit any vehicle or any objects in the roadway. We are not going to make a false claim on our insurance for something that is a manufacturing defect with the truck. The service advisor believes that we hit something which made the small dent in the differential casing and this caused all the other damage described above. There is no way a small dent in the differential casing could cause all the damage that occurred. This dent could have occurred from a rock hitting it; it is a very small dent. If we would of hit something, there probably would have been damage to the front bumper and transmission as well which sits lower than the differential. Also, if we hit the differential, which is made from aluminum, there probably there would have been a substantial amount of damage to it. His theory does not make sense to us. We believe there could be a defect with the suspension bars on my vehicle. Also the drive shaft could have catapulted us causing a serious collision and injuries to us.

7 Driveshaft problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

My truck is a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with a diesel engine in it. I got it used. It is an automatic. Over the past year or so I have had to take it in to the dealer for an intense vibration and squealing coming from the rear end. The vibration is from around 25 to 40 mph and the again at 70 or so. The dealer replaced u-joins and the rear drive shaft a few times. Today is the second time that they are replacing drive shaft. This is the 5th time over the past two years I have had it in for this problem. They told me this is a common problem on these trucks and they are working on a fix. The truck is only two years old and only has in the range of 60,000 miles on it.

8 Driveshaft problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/23/2006

: the contact stated while driving various speeds, there was a pronounced vibration within the chassis. The vehicle was taken to the dealer whom attributed the vibration to the design. After several inspections by the dealer, the driveshaft was removed in an effort to decrease the vibration. This repair effort worsened the vibration and the driveshaft was placed back onto vehicle. Afterwards, the contact was driving 5mph and the driveshaft disengaged falling from the axle pocket onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to await further inspection.

9 Driveshaft problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/06/2005

2004 Dodge Ram 2500 qslt 4 x 4 diesel excessive vibration in steering, seats, floorboards and mirrors at highway speeds around 70 to 75 mph. Vehicle has been to dealer twice for a total of 12 days. Technician has duplicated problem and dealer has tried to rectify problem. Dealer has replaced u-joints, drive shaft, tried rebuilding the differential, even swapped known good wheels and tires from a new vehicle. Tried adjusting air pressures and rotating wheels. Dealer has contacted s. T. A. R. Technical center. The center gave them a lengthy recommendation for isolating this vibration only to seem to have made the vibration worse. At this time the dealer has been told by the manufacturer that they are not authorizing any more attempts to repair this problem. When contacting the customer service center at Chrysler I was told to work with the dealer. I was finally told by the dealer that Chrysler is aware of this problem and is supposedly working to resolve it. If you ask me, after researching the internet, I have seen this complaint by several consumers of this particular model, and it dates back over a year and a half.

11 Driveshaft problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/15/2004

Drive train vibration (high frequency droan) that can be felt in steering wheel, pedals and even in the seat. Purchased in April 04, started trying to get Dodge to fix it in may and have made several attempts to no avail. Obtained copy of fax from s. T. A. R center case report that apparently this is a fleet wide problem with my particular mode. Fax states " this condition is currently under investigation by Dodge truck division. TSB / other may be issued when corrective action procedure is defined. " since first try to correct in may 04 the vibration fuel line has vibrated lose, fuel injector pump failed leaking fuel out of the rear of the pump, 4 wd transfer case locked up once in high and once in low range at dealers. Dealer had to order parts and were backordered. Rebuilt parts used to replace failed parts. No codes stored in any module. I think these were failures due to the high frequency vibration. My concern is that the bad part in the drive train will eventually fail and possibly lock up the drive train causing me to lose control of the vehicle. In looking at the fax from s. T. A. R. Dodge has a problem with this model and knew it in April 04 but did not notify the dealers or consumers such problem existed. This is a high dollar truck $42,000 msrp and I fear might be my death trap. Model is 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 hd, cummins 600 diesel, 4 speed automatic transmission, 4 wheel drive, shift on the fly, quad cab, short wheel base. The south alabama service district manager, joe soblinaki, told me this was the first year for the new 4 wheel drive setup. They changed the transfer cases, and switched from a eaton axle to a hendrix axle. I did now know this at the time I bought this vehicle. They have been looking for a fix for 4 months on my vehicle and they still don't have a clue as to the problem or solution. I hate to take this truck to arbitration knowing Dodge will resell it again and some other inocent fool will buy it and could get killed in it. Thanks.
