Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 11 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Driving through town, clear weather, good road conditions, luckily going only 25 mph, there was a grinding noise up front for two seconds then, all of a sudden, the front wheels locked up and the tires skidded approximately 5 feet. The engine remained running, the transmission shifted fine but the front wheels were locked and the truck would not move! the truck had to be dragged onto the tow truck. The Dodge dealership has deemed this a wear and tear incident, which I completely disagree with. Had I been going at highway speed, I am convinced I would have lost control and/or much more damage would have been done. They want $1,800 for this repair! I just had the driveline serviced 6,000 miles prior to this! and before that at 60,000 miles. I keep my truck maintained to the book. It cannot be normal wear and tear! this truck is pampered and not used commercially nor never under extreme conditions above and beyond towing a 7500 pound camper. They are essentially rebuilding the front differential! I'm almost afraid to continue driving it. I especially worry for my wife and teenage son if something this severe and abrupt should occur while they are driving it in the future!.

Updated from previous version. The ring and pinion gear got so hot, they welded together, which caused the axle to seize and the wheels to lock up. Replacing the ring and pinion will cost $1,150. I also need a differential overhaul at a cost of $1,500. The grand repair total will be in the neighborhood of $2,650! when has there ever been a wear and tear repair that would cost that much? since when do wear and tear items get so hot that they weld themselves to each other? I just had the driveline serviced 6,000 miles prior to this! and before that at 60,000 miles. I keep my truck maintained to the book. It cannot be normal wear and tear! this truck is pampered and not used commercially nor never under extreme conditions above and beyond towing a 7500 pound camper. I'm afraid to continue driving it. I especially worry for my wife and teenage son if something this severe and abrupt should occur while they are driving it in the future! I feel like it will only be a matter of time before the rear differential does the same thing! something faulty had to occur either through defective materials or incorrect maintenance procedures performed by the dealership when I had the driveline serviced. But it's my word against theirs, impossible to prove.
The heater works on occasion from Nov 13 till I replaced it in may 2015, now its August 2015 and the heater has completely stopped working. I live in alaska and a heater is a huge deal. Also during an oil change noticed the tie rod is all gooped with oil. Have an 09 1500 that the tie rod broke on. Curious if my 08 is gonna have the same issue. The rear differential is leaking oil all of a sudden as of June 2015 after hauling my 24 foot trailer 1200 miles. When I put the truck in 4 low and drive it makes a huge clucking sound doesn't turn very well either. It feels like my steering is about to go out. I can't drive up my driveway without digging wholes in the gravel. I bought the truck used November 2013 and feel like I got a lemon.

My differential has went out twice in my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel truck. The first time it went out at 48k miles (may 2008) (covered by warranty) and the second time at 137k miles. Both times the failure begain with a winding sound from the differential, then followed by differemential slip. If not corrected right away the differential will begin rattling before coming apart. The potential harm is that the differential can lock up when going down the road. The repair action is to replace all bearings and gears in the differetntial $1800). I do not tow anything with this heavy duty truck. I have kept up with the recommended manufacturer maintenance schedules. I have reported this to Dodge and they do not recognize the problem as common. I have only 1k miles on the 2nd rebuilt differential and I already have to take it in for winding and slipping of the differential. I have it scheduled for 28 Jan 2011 to have it looked at again.

2004 Dodge 4x4 quad cab 2500. When is a pull or turnning to the left the rear differetial has a gringing sound. Started making this sound at about 45000 miles. Have contacted dealer to have is checked. Will followup after dealer visit.
2004 Dodge ram VIN#3d7ka28d04g176384 quad cab slt. There is an obvious noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, best described as a loud whine. It occurs while accelerating or decelerating at low rpm's and only when the vehicle is cold and the temperature outside is cold as well. The colder it is outside, the louder the whine noted from the rear end. After approximately 5-10 minutes of driving, the noise steadily diminishes and then eventually completely disappears. Took vehicle to the dealer and had it inspected during routine maintenance. Maintenance technician advised that it was normal and was probably the pinion gear. Took the truck back again as the temperature got colder and the whine got louder. They let the vehicle sit overnight and test drove it the next morning and, this time, heard the obvious whine. I was advised that there are no recalls or TSB's issued as of yet, but it is a problem that daimlerchrysler is investigating. The printout from dealerconnect stated that it is a rear propeller shaft center bearing noise issue-"especially when cold. " they also stated that a TSB or other notification may be issued after engineering review of the reported problem. It has been assigned a "solution number" of k32981098. I just wanted to report the problem to NHTSA so that appropriate follow up can be done and help expedite a recall notice if warranted.
After vehicle was warmed up a clanking sound started. Also, when towing a fifth wheel trailer, after and after traveling 100 miles vehicle shook like the rear end was going to fall out. Dealer duplicated the problem , and stated it was either the rear end or the differential. Manufacturer offered no help. The consumer stated that the wrong lube in the rear end differential. Manufacturer advised a different lube. Consumer waiting for results when 5th wheel RV is being towed.

When backing up a clunking noise emitted from differental. Dealer replaced fluid and added some "additive". Did not correct problem. They kept truck to disassemble differental, found nothing amiss, replaced fluid and additive. At this time, all seems ok. The cost was $83. 90. When they decided to keep the truck over night they thought it would be covered under warranty. However, it was out of pocket expense.
