I read on my news feed today about issues with a 2017 Ford Edge that there are problems with coolant leaking into the combustion chamber and that we should report this to the NHTSA. We just traded in our 2017 Edge that had this problem. In August of 26 I had a check engine light come on and the engine started running very rough, I had o'reilly's hook up the diagnostic tool and it showed it needed a tune up. I put new coil packs and spark plugs in and this did not take care of the problem. I took the vehicle to performance truck country in woods cross utah, the found that there was coolant leaking into the #3 cylinder via a warped block. Please see attached document and pics. 2017 Ford Edge with appx. 82,000 miles diagnosed with coolant intrusion in # 3 cyclinder (Ford 2. 0 litter motor).
The vehicle had approximately 113,000 miles on the odometer when the initial engine problems began. It began intermittently shaking violently for several seconds immediately after startup. This occurred periodically for approximately one week. During this time, the check engine warning lamp illuminated, and diagnostic trouble codes p0300, p0302, and p0304 were recorded, indicating multiple-cylinder misfires. At that time, the issue was believed to be related to the spark plugs and/or ignition coil packs, and repairs were planned for the following weekend. Approximately four days later, before those planned repairs were completed, the vehicle began making a noticeable water-running or sloshing sound from behind the dashboard. The sound would continue for approximately 5–10 minutes after startup, even when the vehicle had not yet been driven and the radio, heat, and air conditioning were turned off. While driving, the sloshing sound would return whenever the vehicle stopped and accelerated again, including at stoplights. The coolant level was then checked and found to be below the minimum level, and additional coolant was added. Despite adding coolant, the level again dropped below the minimum after only a short drive to pick up my children from a sports activity. No visible coolant leak was observed underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was subsequently taken to a mechanic for inspection. The cylinder head was removed and taken to a local parts store for additional inspection. A new head gasket was installed, and the vehicle was reassembled. Since the head gasket repair, the vehicle has been driven approximately 1,200 additional miles. Approximately two weeks after the repair, the vehicle again began experiencing a rough startup similar to the original symptoms. I am concerned that the underlying problem remains unresolved and that the repeated coolant loss, misfires, and severe shaking at startup could result in engine failure or loss of reliable operation.
The engine was running rough and the check engine light on. It first happened on xxx. One engine coil was replaced but the engine light came back on and was running rough and misfiring at the end of xxx. At another independent auto repair shop diagnostic trouble codes detected that coolant intrusion was made into cylinder #2 due to a known engine block issue, causing the seal between the top and bottom halves of the engine to fail. This leads to catastrophic engine failure. We were told we'd need to replace our engine at the cost of $10,000. Our car milage is only 32,447 and the engine should be replaced by Ford at no cost to us. Ford caused the failure. Our car is parked in our garage and we're ready to drive it to a Ford dealership for an engine replacement. I have a known issue of coolant intrusion in cylinder 2 Ford has a TSB 19-2346 and are aware of the issue I am also aware of miller vs Ford wich was settled June 22, 2026 due to the same issue I am looking for a goodwill engine replacement from Ford.
I just bought this used Ford Edge for my high school daughter. I took it to two different mechanics. Both indicated misfiring happening which means need a new engine. Mechanics said this is widely known issue. Why can dealers sell these cars with a widely known defect. This will create undue financial hardship to me and my family. My stress and anxiety are terrible on this issue.

2. 0 liter eco boost engine intrusion. One owner, all maintenance records.
My 2017 Ford Edge titanium 2. 0l ecoboost (~76,500 miles) has experienced the coolant-intrusion engine failure being evaluated under NHTSA defect petition dp26008. Symptoms began with an intermittent check-engine light and cylinder 2 misfire. On 8/24/2026, irvine auto care documented codes p0302 and p0316 and performed a block test, concluding the head gasket had failed and was causing the misfire. I obtained a second independent diagnosis from daytona automotive garage on 8/26/2026. Daytona confirmed the cylinder 2 misfire, inserted a borescope into cylinder 2, and documented “coolant trickling down to cylinder wall. ” daytona recommended complete engine replacement and referenced Ford TSB 22-2229. The coolant level is dropping with no observed external leak, and I have observed light white exhaust. The vehicle still runs, but coolant intrusion into cylinder 2 has been directly confirmed. I do not trust it for highway driving or transporting my young child because of the risk of unexpected loss of engine power. The vehicle remains in my possession and is available for inspection. Ford declined goodwill assistance. A Ford dealer told me any coverage associated with TSB 22-2229 expired after 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first. My engine failed at only ~76,500 miles. Daytona’s engine-replacement estimate exceeded $7,000 before it was complete, and a Ford dealer verbally estimated about $9,000 for a remanufactured-engine replacement. I am left with an otherwise well-maintained, relatively low-mileage vehicle that I cannot reasonably trust unless I spend more than half its value replacing the engine. If I replace the vehicle instead, I will likely have to sell the Edge as-is for far below its value absent this defect. This failure has also required considerable time and expense to diagnose. I am reporting it to document another affected vehicle and support NHTSA’s evaluation of dp26008.

Vehicle: 2017 Ford Edge titanium, 2. 0l ecoboost, awd mileage at incident: ~90,000 (mountain 2 lane canyon road steep cliffs and very little pull off space) description of problem: while driving uphill on a 2-lane mountain road, my vehicle displayed “engine coolant over temperature” (and related engine heat) warnings. The temperature gauge rose rapidly, engine power was severely limited (could not exceed ~40 mph even with full throttle), and pink coolant fluid was visibly boiling and gushing from the reservoir/overflow tank. I immediately pulled over safely. After cooling for 2–3 hours, the vehicle restarted and completed the climb with lighter driving, but the incident was dangerous due to reduced power on a winding mountain road with oncoming traffic. A check engine light with code p04db (crankcase ventilation system disconnected) is also present. Coolant pump, relays, fuses, and oil was checked and showed no milky contamination or issues at the time. Some white exhaust and smell was present at the time. This matches the well-known coolant intrusion defect in 2015–2018 Ford 2. 0l ecoboost engines (see TSB 19-2346), where coolant leaks internally into cylinders, causing overheating, misfires, and potential sudden engine failure. Mechanics initially found no issue on a cold check, which is common with this intermittent problem. Safety risk: sudden power loss, overheating, and “engine coolant over temperature” warnings on mountain roads or highways create a serious hazard of stranding, loss of control, or accident. This defect has affected thousands of similar Ford vehicles and should be investigated for a safety recall. I request NHTSA open or expand an investigation into this issue for the 2017 Ford Edge and similar models.
Purchased the vehicle from a local dealership with 80k miles. Less than 5 months later, we’re being told that we need a new engine due to coolant leaking into to the engine.
Check engine light came on, engine started "sputtering". No danger at time. Took to established repair center who notified us the engine had a common problem with this year/model Ford where the coolant leaks into the engine block. Total engine replacement is only option. We were told Ford knows about this but is doing nothing about it. Also told if we were to continue driving it it would likely cause catastrophic engine failure, possibly while driving. 143,000 miles. Ford should be held criminally responsible for the loss of the vehicle if no assistance is offered. Repair or monetary.
My motor failed me in my 2017 Ford Edge 2. 0. Very bad misfire from the famous coolent problem caused by Fords decision to make a bad design with coolent ports between the cylinders, that as had my car bucking and was actually very dangerous on the highway I broke down on. Almost cause a accident. When this happen I lost brakes for a second. Car was clunking and bucking do to the motor not running probably with the misfire and motor filled with coolent. . I have 90k miles on this car. Ridiculous. There's no recall yet which is very unprofessional on Ford end to make people pay for this fix that is uncontrollable and very pricey.
Cylinder coolant intrusion I took my vehicle to warren/ sheldon auto repair shop in canton, mi they did a diagnostic test on it, they told me they found coolant in the engine, and I would need a brand new engine. If I would of not taken the vehicle to the auto shop, the vehicle may have caught on fire vector the condition it is in, because it would of overheated because of no coolant or was very low -due to a leak. A check engine light came on June 5th, 2026, and two days later I took it to the shop.
2017 Ford Edge started generating codes for misfires on cylinder #2. The recommendation was to replace all spark plugs and ignition coils. This work was performed and the code was cleared. In a few days the same code re-appeared. I took our Edge to a Ford dealership in clarksville TN. The diagnosis is that the engine suffers from coolant intrusion in cylinder #2. The dealership wants $10,000 to replace the long block. Since this is a known manufacturer defect by Ford motor company shouldn't we receive some financial assistance to have this engine replaced. I have the 2. 0 ecoboost. I had my check engine light come on xxx. I went to autozone in [xxx] to have the code checked. They told me it was a cylinder 1 misfire. The code read as an ignition coil. I thought it was no big deal because of the mileage and thought it was time for coils and plugs. Friday June 12, 2026, I started my car to go to work and I turned on my defroster because it was foggy out. 15 minutes into my drive to work, I noticed I had no heat. I got to work, checked under my hood and noticed my coolant reservoir was empty. I got the approved coolant for my car and put a whole gallon into the reservoir and it filled it up between the min/max line. Xxx, at the end of the day, I checked again and my reservoir was empty. It has been idling rough when starting either cold or warmed up. This coolant intrusion problem is a major safety issue because it can cause catastrophic engine failure and even engine fires. I bought it used and couldn’t afford the warranty but being a design defect, Ford should be held responsible for the remedy, not just issue an optional TSB and leave unsuspecting drivers buying a used car from a certified dealer with the risk of paying for another new car or engine replacement. It was necessary to stop at the end of an on-ramp to an expressway. As I proceeded to enter the expressway, my 2017 Ford Edge started vibrating and as I accelerated to go onto the expressway, the car stalled. I was able to restart the car and it vibrated and stalled again as I accelerated to pull over on the shoulder of the road, which there was minimal area to pull off due to the lack of shoulder. Then, the check engine light came on. I could have been in a major accident if I was not able to get out of the flow of traffic quick enough. My mechanic told me that I have a head gasket cylinder leak which is a well known problem with the 2. 0l Ford ecoboost engine which causes the engine to stall. He said that he has seen this problem before and Ford recognizes the problem but is unwilling to do anything about it. He also said that probably a certain amount of people have to die or get injured before Ford will do anything about it. He also said Ford changed the cooling design after 2019 due to the number of problems they have had with the 2. 0l engine head gasket. The first warning light that came on was after the engine stalled the second time.

Recently I have noticed, in my 2017 Ford Edge sel, that my coolant level in reservoir has been low a few times with no puddling anywhere under car. I have read that this is a known issue with this vehicle that has the 2. 0l ecoboost engine. What can be done about this? from what I have been reading, this a design issue that Ford knows about but has not offered a fix. The cost to replace the engine is more than vehicle is worth. Engine has coolant leaking into the third cylinder. This explains why my vehichle runs rough, coolant level drops with no sign of leaks underneath the vehicle and white exhaust smoke. Apparently its a known issue with the 2. 0 l ecoboost engines and is addressed in a technical service bulletin (TSB). To correct coolant intrusion into the cylinders you have to replace the long block engine assembly. The issue started in texas about a year ago and a code appeared for misfire in cylinder 3. Spark plugs and ignition coil was replaced only for the code to appear again the next week. Twice a month we would have to top off the coolant. It wasnt until about 2 weeks ago when smoke was coming out of the exhaust and was advised it is not safe to drive.
