5 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2016 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 07/31/2021

Rear windshield shattered due to no cause, no impact, nothing. I was just driving down the road to town and it just popped and shattered. I could not see out the rear window and pieces kept falling from the bottom of window. It was very unsafe to drive the car with the windshield shattered like this. No quick fix, no available glass on the island and working right now to try to get it repaired. It happened today, 7/31/21.

7 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2011 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 07/19/2011

On July 19th, 2011 while driving south bound on folly road in charleston, SC I was slowing down towards the intersection w/ fort johnson road. I was travelling approximately 30mph when I heard a very large pop or explosion like sound. After a second or two, I noticed shards of glass falling off the roof over the back window. I pulled over into a lot and found the rear most fixed glass roof panel (of the panoramic vista roof) had completely shattered. The local Ford dealership indicated that Ford will not treat this as a warranty covered item. The vehicle was brand new, bought only 4 days prior to the incident. I have formally submitted a complaint with Ford and am supposed to receive a response in 15 days. I had no choice but to file an insurance claim in the meantime - the vehicle can not be driven and needs to be fixed. This has apparently happened in other panoramic vista roofs from Ford, and just like in this case it happened spontaneously and without any impact from any object.

8 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2008 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 02/13/2010

My family and I were driving down the freeway when the panoramic moonroof on my 2008 Ford Edge shattered. We were not near an underpass or close to another vehicle. It does not appear to have been caused by any foreign object. We heard a loud pop, which my husband thought was a gun shot. He felt the shade and could feel pieces of glass weighing the shade down. He pulled over to inspect the roof. The entire glass was shattered, but sticking together for the most part. The Edges were crumbling as were parts throughout in the center. As we drove home more pieces of glass started crumbling off. Fortunately the shade was closed at the time or the pieces of glass would have landed on my husband while driving and on my infant son and me in the back seat. We were also fortunate that it was not raining at that moment (although it did later that evening). The dealership had closed for the weekend, so I waited until first thing Monday morning and took the car in. I have the standard bumper-to-bumper warranty, an extended warranty and a maintenance package on the vehicle. However, Ford claims that the roof is not covered by any of those because it is glass. I find it highly unusual that the glass used for a roof would not be made of durable glass similar to a windshield, given the likelihood of a rock hitting it or falling hail. Had the shade been open or had the weather conditions been bad, the situation could have been worse. I have also learned that several sunroofs on the Ford escape have had issues with shattering without provocation as well. My dealership offered to pay a portion of the $1300 replacement cost given that Ford refused to cover any of the costs and given its desire to maintain good customer relations. However, Ford has yet to be able to locate or manufacture a replacement glass (approximately two and a half weeks after the incident).

9 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2007 Ford Edge

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

Purchased a new Ford Edge on 12/29/06. Contacted Ford motor at least 7 times. Called my servicing dealer , called local dealer. Visited 10 different auto agency's to discuss problem. Ford has designed the windshield so that the entire dash board shows up as a double image in the windshield! this is not just a little portion , but the entire windshield. I have been in contact with glass manufactures, tinting companies etc. , only to be told that I am wasting my time. In fact after numerous tries with Ford motor customer service they say and I quote that my problem has been appropriately addressed, and that the problem is a normal vehicle characteristic ! I purchased this Ford Edge in good faith, and can not believe that this problem is safe, in fact I contacted consumer report, and they suggested I contact your office. It does not matter if the sun is shining or if the sun is not shining, you can not see out of the windshield safely, you must where polorized sun glasses at all times, including at dusk. This is wrong. I have done and said everything I can to make Ford aware of this problem, and I got nowhere. The next step is to visit a opthamologist to see what damage is being done to the eye. In 6 months this Ford Edge has been driven only 1500 miles, by my wife, and I drove it another 1000 miles just to see if it was just me. After a long trip, I guarantee you will be taking a nap to rest your eyes. This is going to cause an accident. I also found upon inspection of other make cross overs, that Ford is right, this is a design flaw in the new cross overs. I drive a cadiliac escalade ext, and I do not have to where sun glasses to drive this pickup. I hope this is not going to be swept under the carpet, as I really think this can be serious! I will wait to hear from you . I have also contacted mr. Keith mc calls office and we will wait your reply. Sincerely, j. A. H.
