Driving home on 78 from julian and heard a loud pop pulled over to the side of the road and saw that the sunroof over the back seat had exploded. Luckily the grand kids weren't the back seat the glass stay intact. Took the car to heller Ford where we both it and explained what happened. They said they have never heard of this happening before, something must hit it and it is our responsibility to pay for it. We are waiting for the glass to come so poway glass can re place it. Then we will see if Ford is going to pay for it.

On 10/21/13 at 6:30 am I was driving on my daily route to work along interstate route 95-south. As I was driving over the high level bridge in portsmouth, nh, I heard a very loud bang. The vehicle had not struck any object, nor had any object struck the vehicle. I looked up and saw that the entire moonroof had completely shattered in place. I immediately pulled off the next exit. When I exited the vehicle and inspected its exterior, I confirmed that there was no indication that anything had hit my car. There was no sign of any object having struck the moon roof. There were no localized impact cracks or puncture holes anywhere, yet, a strip along all four Edges of the moon roof had separated, while the center area stayed intact, but was completely shattered. I brought my car to the portsmouth, nh Ford dealership and the service manager looked at my vehicle's moon roof and agreed that the damage did not appear to be caused by something hitting my car. Fmc has documentation of his statement. Sm took pictures of the moon roof and submitted a to fmc. Fmc immediately denied the request for replacement. In the meantime, the service manager escalated the request because he felt very strongly that this was not a result of something hitting my moon roof. The request was once again denied. Mr. Xxx has continued to make calls on my behalf this week to fmc, asking how anyone can make a determination without sending someone to inspect the moon roof firsthand. He was repeatedly told for three days that Ford was working on coming up with a resolution. On 10/23/13 Ford called and offered to pay for half the replacement cost of the moon roof. Due to the lack of service from Ford motor company, I had to submit a claim through my personal car insurance.
Driving home from work on hwy 99 I heard a loud pop (sounded like a gunshot) and heard the sound of glass. I pulled off the freeway and discovered my sunroof had completely exploded. I was alone on the road and was nowhere near an overpass where something could have fallen on it. It was a cold day and the heater was on so there was a temperature difference. I drove the car to Ford after calling my insurance company. I was told today that there was no "structural defect" so Ford was not responsible for the replacement. It is 1300 dollars for a new sunroof, 10 days before christmas. After doing some research online I found my car was not the only one to have had this happen. Had the cover not been closed, shards of glass would have rained down on me as well as my son in the backseat. We could have been seriously injured either from the glass or an accident. This needs to be looked into and soon before someone gets seriously hurt or loses their life.
Enclosed are a description and the other information about the Ford Edge you requested. This is a part of what was sent to the Ford motor company after the sunroof claim was denied on the basis that they feel something from the outside hit the sunroof. On July 24, 2008 at about 8:00 pm, my brother in laws was driving my car on interstate 75 just north of bowling green, ohio. He was driving 60-65 mph with the windows up, air conditioner on, and the sunroof closed. As he was driving, he reports a sudden explosion in the car, like he was shot. He and the passenger had small shards of broken glass rain down on them. They managed to safely pull the car to the brim of the highway without any further problems. Upon examining the sunroof, they observed a hole the size of a small dinner plate in the center of the roof and all four corners missing. The glass in the middle and corners of the sunroof had the appearance ?like a volcano? out of the car. Both the driver and the passenger reported that there were no overpasses or cars around them to kick up any object that could have hit the roof. The glass from the hole was not in the car. I feel this claim has been denied unjustly and that the Ford motor company and planet Ford of centerville are closing their eyes to an issue that should be investigated thoroughly by someone in person instead of sending ?digital pictures? to someone at corporate to make a decision. After all, this is a safety issue that could have been fatal, leaving Ford with a much bigger problem than just replacing a faulty sunroof. Sincerely, 2008 Ford Edge limited.
2007 Ford Edge with factory vista roof (moon roof). Vista roof shattered while driving down the road. No traffic around, nothing hit the sunroof, it just completely shattered. Luckily I had the shade closed or my wife and I would have been seriously injured. Service department at lasco Ford in fenton michigan believed it was due to the extreme cold outside mixed with the warm air inside. They could not get Ford to cover the defect, though, as they haven't had a problem yet with the vista roof. I had to file an insurance claim. This is unacceptable and Ford needs to look into this issue before someone seriously gets injured.
