Turned the car off. . . It was revving up like a race car. . . All by itself. Very scary. Could have died. The floor boards were clean. Nothing could have stuck to the accelerator pedal. . . . No way this could be operator error.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2015

Was driving at highway speed (appx 55mph) in 5 o'clock traffic in raleigh, nc on us 1 and the vehicle lost speed. All emergency lights came on. Forced to pull the vehicle off onto the shoulder and was almost rear ended. The vehicle sputtered and totally cut off. Attempted to restart the vehicle but it kept cutting off. I was unable to restart the vehicle and was stranded on the highway. After a call to a family member and to aaa, the car was towed home 3 hours later. The next day, the car was towed to crossroads Ford in cary, nc. They determined that the pcm, spark plugs and ignition coils all failed at once and charged me $2700. Error codes p0351, p0354 and p0353 appeared on the diagnostics. The vehicle was repaired the next day. This is a huge safety issue since the vehicle suddenly undergoes a catastrophic failure with loss of power and acceleration and could lead to an accident.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

As soon as I hit about 60 mph, between 2-3 rpm, my car begins to stall and feels like the gas pedal is grinding and won't let me go any faster without vibrating the entire vehicle. I initially thought it was the transmission slipping so I took it in to a transmission auto shop where the found absolutely nothing. Which is very odd for an auto shop to not find anything. About 1 week after this problem, the service emission light came on. I was driving home from work the day the light came on and the car completely stopped on the highway, in rush hour traffic. Thankfully I was close to the side of the highway and was able to pull over. I got to the side and put my car into park, turned the engine off, and waited a couple of minutes to allow my heart rate to come back down to a normal pace. I turned the key and the engine turned back on. I drove it into an auto shop to see what the issue was, and the reader showed cylinder 2 misfire. The first possible fix was to replace the coil on plug, which is what I did. I got home today and am still experiencing this scary feeling of my car not being able to excel above 60. I read many reviews this evening and so many people have experienced very similar issues. This is not safe and people are at serious risk or getting injured and/or in an accident. . Read more...

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2013

Saturday, November 23, 2013 I left home to do errands as I drove down to the first intersection and stopped when the light turned green the gas pedal with not move it was stuck, I tried to push it down with both feet but that didn't work either, finally after pumping the pedal the car lunged forward and I made it through the intersection. I decided to go back home and not drive this car. As I travel through the intersection and down the road I tried to accelerate again the pedal stuck. I'm on a 35 mph highway and I slowed to a terrifying 3mph before the pedal would work again. This is a safety issue! from what I have been reading this is a problem for many and there should be some sort of investigation or recall before someone get seriously injured or a fatal accident happens!.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

I have had problems with my Ford Escape for a few months. Generally when at a stop my engine would rev really high. After this went on for awhile now when applying the brake or at a stop the idling goes so low I'm afraid it's going to stall. I have had a mechanic test it and put it on an analyzer but the analyzer doesn't show a problem. I finally had the throttle motor replaced but it is still idling too low at times. This problem is intermittent and seems to be no rhyme or reason when it will start doing it. I'm at a loss on how to fix it but it's pretty unsafe to be driving at times.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2013

My wife was driving all of sudden vehicle kept accelerating without her foot being on the gas pedal. She was traveling at 25mph when vehicle accelerated to 45mph on its own. She had to take action to avoid havving an accident. The vehicle now will rev high when first turning on vehicle. The longer vehicle runs the higher the engine revs and increases speed on its own.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

While driving on the interstate at appx 70 mph I heard a beep and at the same time the dash indicated a wrench, and message to stop safely now, and the car would no longer accelerate. Pulled over and shut the engine off, waited a few minutes then restarted the engine. The message was no longer on the dash and the car drove normally for a few minutes then happened again. This went on several times until I could get to a place where I felt safe to stop. Brought the car in and they replaced the hybrid cooling pump. Now, 1 yr later the same thing is happening again. Was driving appx 50 mph and same beep, message and car would not accelerate. This time I was close enough to home to be able to restart and get home safely.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

2005 Ford Escape has a critical safety issue with the gas pedal completely locking up. Sometimes tapping pedal will free it. As of 3/5/2013 I am not allowing my daughter to use this vehicle. This has been an ongoing problem. We have had the vehicle towed only to have the mechanic unable to identify the cause. From what I have seen on the web, this appears to be a very common issue. Ford should be responsible for determining the cause and issue a recall ASAP,before someone is seriously injured or worse.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2013

Our 2005 Ford Escape has a surging problem. When stopped at a light, every once in a while the engine will suddenly speed up. To keep it from moving forward you have to press hard on the brake pedal. A Ford dealership wanted $85. 00 to diagnose the problem. This is unacceptable for a safety problem.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

My gas peddle sticks, it is happening more and more. I almost got rear ended by another vehicle the other day, it is sticking on a daily basis now.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

The gas pedal is "sticking. " it won't depress. Throttle body problem.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

I was driving up to a stop light so I removed my foot from the gas and to the brake, before I could get to the red light it changed to green, I went to press on the gas and the pedal was stuck. It would not go down nothing. I coasted to the side of the busy highway kept trying to press it and it wouldn't go down. After about 5 mins of just sitting there I tried it again and it went down without a problem. This vehicle was recalled in the prior years for this exact issue 2004 and below. However my 2005 is not recalled. It is now at the Ford dealership and I am waiting on a cost estimate. The vehcile did tend to do this from time to time only when its cold outside. I took it in several years ago to be repaird and when they test drove it, it woudn't stick for them so no issue was found for them to repair.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2012

While traveling northbound on interstate 476 car suddenly lost power and would refuse to accelerate over 10 mph. Luckily it was early on a Sunday morning, and not high-traffic time, we successfully pulled the car over to the shoulder. Our mechanic has been working on and researching the issue. Turns out Ford is aware and has issued a "service bulletin" that the computer is faulty, and affects the catalytic converters, spark plugs, and coils. A quick search on car complaints told us we were not the only ones, and it appears to be a time rather than mileage failure. While most are complaining about the minimum $2,000 fix, we are thankful it did not cause harm to us or anyone else. How many 2005 Ford Escapes are on the roads these days?.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2012

After totaling a 2004 Escape, I purchased another 2005 Escaped because I loved it. Well not so much anymore. I bought the vehicle from a dealership in September 2012. Only three short months later I started having the exact same problem I am reading in all complaints. I tried to push on the gas and nothing. It was misfiring bad. I then took it too a shop and they told me coils 1, 3, and 5 were out and needed to be replaced. The dealership wanted close too $2,000 to repair it. I was furious because I had bought my 2004 from the same dealership and my family alone had purchased a total of 6 vehicles from the dealership. I was a loyal customer and was not going to pay to have it fixed. So they split the cost of $1000 with me. Now it is acting up again and I've replaced the fuel filter and the thermostat bc thats what the computer said only for it to still not be running. I am a single mother, college student, and server and it's 2 days before christmas so I am very disappointed! fix the problem Ford!!.

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

I was driving on the highway going about 65 mph. When I tried to press down on the gas it was stuck I could not accelerate. I pressed as hard as I could and it was stuck. I had to put it in neutral and pull over.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2012

I own at 2005 Ford Escape. In 2007 and 2009 I had two incidents of being at a red light and when I pushed on the accelerator it felt hard to press and would not budge. I had to pull over and continually push on the accelerator and the car would finally go. This morning I had the same thing happen. The first two incidents resulted in my taking the car to the dealership and they replaced the throttle body stating that it was a defective part. After this most recent incident I am planning on taking the car to the dealership again.

27 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2012

Driving down highway at aprox. 55 mph. Theft light came on in vehicle and vehicle quickly decelerated. From the research that I gathered, this is a known problem to Ford. Faulty spark plugs were installed in some 2005 Escapes. The spark plugs emit a radio frequency that cause the coils to basically fry your computer. Ford has released a bulletin about this (TSB 09-2-6) but refuses to issue a recall. This is a huge safety issue, as decelerating on a major highway without brake lights has the potential to cause a terrible accident. Contacted Ford's corporate office and was offered no assistance. I would like to have my spark plugs at least checked at no charge. The cost, for only checking the spark plugs to see if they are the ones affected is $90. I believe that this should be a recall. Ford is well aware of the problem but refuses to take any steps to fix this.

28 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2012

The accelerator pedal is very difficult to press and sometimes cannot be pressed down at all.

29 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact stated while attempting to accelerate froma traffic stop the vehicle stalled. The dealer was notified who advised the contact to try to reach out to the manufacturer and did not offer any additional assistance. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included on any recalls. The failure mileage was 67,000.

30 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2012

On August 18th 2012 I was returning home from grocery shopping in downtown hamilton mt when our 2005 Ford Escape accelerated out of control and would not stop. I managed to Dodge traffic and people and put it in park and hold my foot down on the brake but it kept speeding. It continued to race down the street about ½ mile or more until I came to a place I was able to turn off the street into a parking area with a corral which had an iron gate on the fence that I felt would stop me. It finally slowed down and I was able to turn off the key and stop; thank god without hitting or harming anyone still it was a terrifying event.

31 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

While driving home from work, I went to accelerate. Upon reaching 40. I heard a substantial backfire noise, and the engine shut off in the middle of a busy road causing me to block traffic as I coasted almost into a busy intersection. I was able to put it in neutral and restart the engine after coasting for 100+ feet. After which, the engine began running very rough and rugged never being able to accelerate about 30 mph and causing major traffic problems. I took it to a dealership (varsity Ford in ann arbor, mi) and have been told that my 2005 Ford Escape was in trouble. Apparently, my spark plug after being clogged, caused a backfire which blew my ignition coils and sparkplugs and my pcm. I am being quoted $2,200. At my last oil change (3 months ago) varsity Ford told me I was getting close to needing a tune up but it was not necessary that day and that I could wait until my next oil change. I was planning on going this weekend because I was heading out of town. Had I been told the risk was a $400 tune up vs. A $2,200 blown engine, maybe I would have changed the spark plugs. I'm very distraught at the Ford dealership, and now am questioning whether I will ever buy a Ford or work with a Ford dealership.

32 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. While stopped in a parking space, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal but noticed that the pedal had become hard and would not respond. The contact placed the vehicle in neutral and then back into drive while continually applying pressure to the accelerator pedal. The vehicle jerked forward and proceeded to accelerate. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

33 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact was driving approximately 15 mph and attempting to accelerate onto the highway when the vehicle hesitated before accelerating with a substantial reduction in power. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000. The VIN was unavailable.

34 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact stated that during cold weather and when trying to accelerate, the vehicle would hesitate for approximately 5 seconds. The failure recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised him that the throttle body failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000. The current mileage was approximately 128,000.

35 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2010

The first issue I had with my car was in December of 2010. I immediately took my car to a repair place and they told me that the coils and the plugs were out and that they needed to be replaced. I assumed that this was just time to get this repaired because my car was right over the 100,000 mile mark. Everything seemed fine until may of 2011 when the problem returned. This time I took my car to a Ford service center. This time I noticed that my car would run ok up to about 35 mph and then after that speed it would start jerking. If I take my foot off the gas it stops, but if I leave my foot on the gas and continue to accelerate, the car shuts off completely. I havent taken my car anywhere that I have to drive over 45mph but recently I noticed that if I try to accelerate past 35, that instead of jerking to turn my car off, the harder I push the gas, it feels like I am pushing the brake with that same intensity when I havent even touched the brake. Im afraid that while pushing the gas, the car is going to brake and that someone else is going to slam into the back of my car and hurt my 2 yr old son in his carseat in the back. I avoid driving this car unless I absolutely have to because it is dangerous. It seems that many other owners of the same car I have are having the same or a similar issue. This really needs to be checked into because Ford is aware that this is a common issue but will do nothing about it. It seems like they are waiting for someone to get hurt before the assume responsibility.
