36 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. When the vehicle was idling, the steering wheel began to shake. While driving at an unknown speed, the steering ability seized. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque sensor was damaged and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 97,800.

37 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2016

Daughter is driving my 2008 Ford Escape and was driving home from work when the steering wheel began shaking violently which required her to bring the vehicle to a stop. This required great difficulty due to the loss of power steering and almost resulted in an accident. The Escape was taken to a mechanic which gave her material on the power steering module recall. She contacted Ford and they informed her that the VIN number had been excluded from the recall even though the failure was for the exact reason the recall was initiated.

38 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

Every time I drive on the highway at 75mph the steering wheel would start to shake. Then for the past 2 weeks even when the vehicle was on a stop light the steering wheel would shake. Two days ago as I shifted the vehicle to drive the steering wheel became super hard to move. I turned off the vehicle and once I turned it on the steering wheel felt fine again. This morning as I shifted the gear to drive the steering wheel was hard and unmoveable. I was unable to drive my vehicle.

39 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2016

In 2012 the steering torque sensor went out and caused the eps to continually fail. We had the parts replaced with factory parts in 2014 by an independent mechanic for $500. In December 2015 the steering wheel began shaking erratically again, indicating torque sensor failure. We had previously received a recall notice from Ford telling us to take our 2008 Ford Escape to the nearest dealership. On January 19, 2016 the Escape was dropped off at town and country Ford in madison, TN. We picked the Escape back up on January 21, 2016. The steering wheel still shook erratically. When asked why the mechanic didn't repair the torque sensor, they indicated it wasn't part of the recall because they're only required to repair based off of vag codes or fault codes. The technician stated that the "dash was lit up like christmas" and he didn't have time to pull all of the fault codes. We left mutliple messages for the service deparment manager and received no response. I contacted the Ford customer service number as directed in the NHTSA recall notice and explained as above. Ford customer service directed me to take the car to a different Ford service center and stated they could not enforce the repairs under the recall as dealerships are privately owned. We have video footage of the steering wheel shaking after the service dates as noted in this complaint.

40 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2016

My wife had the power steering stop working, in her vehicle, while driving home on city streets. Upon shutting off and restarting the vehicle the power steering started working again. We took the vehicle to in for service as we want a reliable, safe vehicle. They couldn't find any problems and applied a software update per recall 14s05. Drove home with no problems. The following morning the steering wheel started shaking/vibrating/turning on its own while the vehicle was still in park. Drove the vehicle for the next couple of days problem did not get better. Called the service center back 3 days after original service, when the software update was applied to schedule new appointment. The followup appointment was 4 days later or one week after the original service date. Six days after software update the power steering stopped working while driving home, on a highway, without any warning. Took the vehicle back in the following morning (1 week from original service date) for service. This time the service center found a problem and said that it was the gear and this wasn't covered under the recall. It could just be the timing but it appears that the software update caused problems (steering wheel vibration) that we didn't have with the vehicle prior update, or that they couldn't find any problems when the have a known issue. Also disappointed that given the known issue (recall 14s05) that Ford feels a software update is a "fix" for a steering failure, a potential serious safety issue.

41 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

While driving 2008 Ford Escape April 11, 2015 received a message light stating "power steering assist fault". Now steering wheel shakes except when turning to the left. Steering wheel also randomly moves whiles driving. When driving over 35mph there is constant shake in steering wheel. In July 2014 the car was not having any power steering issues, but Ford recall notice Ford 14s05 was received and car was serviced by dealer for the recall on sept 30, 2014 to change what the car does when the problem with the power steering assist occurs. I will need to take this a dealer to see if they will fix the root problem with power steering assist. In researching this problem, I see this is the most common problem on this vehicle. My complaint is that Ford did not fix the root problem with the power steering assist failure with their remedy for recall 14s05, but they only reprogrammed the car to report the problem differently. This is also same issue reported in official NHTSA investigation #dp15001.

42 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2015

The steering wheel had been shaking and making a grinding noise for a few days. This occurred both while idling, and later while driving. Last night and this morning when the car was started, the message center said "power steering assist failure". I took the car to the dealership and was told that I would need my steering column replaced. I already had the recall that was issued last July (2014) completed at another dealership. I was hoping that since this was clearly an issue with the power steering that was included in the information from the recall that this would be also be covered by the recall. It was not and now costs $1. 052. 29 to repair.

43 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

Wife lost power steering and we took Escape to Ford dealer. There were no codes in the car's computer. Ford dealer updated software per Ford recall instructions. Approximately two months later, steering wheel was vibrating even while standing still and we received power steering warning from dashboard message center. Ford dealer said the car could lose steering entirely (not just power steering) if not repaired. We replaced steering column as described in recall. Again, there were no codes in the car's memory. Because there were no "codes" in the car's computer memory, Ford refused to pay for repairs as described in Ford's direction to dealers for the recall. I called Ford customer support multiple times to complain. Three calls to william Ford were unanswered. Ford made the process to obtain payment for the replacement of the recalled part very difficult. Nhtsa should investigate Ford's process. How many steering columns were replaced?, how many were paid for by Ford as part of the recall? they all should have been paid for by the recall!.

44 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel began shaking uncontrollably. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that steering column electric motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Pam.

45 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

On several occasions my steering wheel would shake and shut off. This problem started right over my 40,000 mile mark. Strangely this problem would happen for four months out of the year, then would come back on. I reported it several times to the dealer when I took it in for my lifetime oil change. In July 2014 I received a letter stating that Ford motor company has issued a recall to fix the problem with the steering. In the same paragraph it said replacement of torque sensor or steering column replacement may be needed. I took the car in in Aug. And a reboot was done to the computer so the error for the steering fault would alarm. I thought this problem was fixed. Well I was driving last week, and my steering alarm went off then my steering shut off. I called the dealer and tried to get the car back in to fix the steering problem, I was told that Ford decided to not pay for the replacement of the entire steering column that we were going to have to pay for it ourselves. I called the Ford help line, and they created a case# and I spoke with a couple of different people, they then told me that unless the steering was out at the exact time of the recall that the don't have to fix it. I continued to argue my letter stating that it said, that either item column or sensor were covered and going to be replaced. Nowhere does it say only the first time you take it in for the recall, either or would be replaced. The woman then kept reiterating that Ford doesn't have the financial recourses to fix the problem. Wow apparently everyone else has $2000 laying around to fix it too. I am so disappointed in this slimy business practice by this company. I expected more from such a reputable company. I will never buy another vehicle from Ford again! they are not guaranteeing their recall!.

46 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2014

My steering wheel has a shake while idling or while driving at a low rate of speed. This shake began just days after taking it in for the power steering recall issue. Which they supposedly fixed the steering shakes enough that it moves my arms while driving.

47 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2014

Vehicle was brought in for warranty repair at village Ford, dearborn (313-565-3900). Invoice reads electric power steering, cause 14s05; check for dtcs and reprogram the pscm and the ic module; 997595 work was started/finished on 2 Dec 2014. A couple days later, after the warranty repair, steering wheel began to vibrate and unless wheel is held tightly at all times the vehicle veers to right. The problem has continued and seems to be getting worse with steering wheel problems seemingly due to the warranty repair.

48 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. While driving at an unknown speed and also while the vehicle was in park, the steering wheel began to vibrate. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle needed to be repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The vehicle was repaired; however, after the repairs, there was an abnormal noise coming from the steering wheel. In addition, the power steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering assist program needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

49 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. While at a stop light, the steering wheel began to vibrate and became very difficult to turn. The contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who repaired the vehicle under NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering); however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

50 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

While driving 2008 Ford Escape electrical steering would quit working while driving down the road and go into manual steering mode. If the vehicle was stopped and restarted the electrical steering would work. Checked to see if the vehicle had a recall for the steering problem online and the vehicle did. Received recall notice for 2008 Ford Escape electrical steering failure recal # 14s05. Took the 2008 in for repairs at ed koehn Ford dealership in wayland, michigan for repairs. Mechanic stated that steering had to be reprogrammed. Now after the fix (programing) vehicle steering wheel shakes while not in motion while parked. Unable to use vehicle. Ford states that vehicle has been fixed as far as they are concerned. Dealership contacted Ford special services for the shaking steering (while the vehicle is sitting motionless) and dealership advised that this would not be covered under the recall. The steering wheel did not shake until Ford made the repair for the recall. I have contacted Ford customer service twice (1-800-392-3673) which still advises it is not related to the recall. Case #5055156-f5p7bq. The recall states that alternatively, the dealer may have to replace the torque sensor or the steering column. In this case, since the reprogramming did not work the steering column should have been changed. The vehicle was not properly repaired. It appears to be a cheap fix by Ford at my expense. Now Ford wants $950 to make the repair which should have been covered at no cost under the recall.

51 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2014

As I was driving, I was about to make a turn and that's when I lost power to my steering wheel. The wheel was very difficult to turn. I stopped my vehicle, shut if off, and restarted. It began to go back to normal but the steering wheel is shaking on it's own. Ever since the first incident, off and on, the steering wheel will have no power. Today, I almost crashed while making a left hand turn. It took all of my strength to make sure I didn't hit the median. I was coming to a stop to make my turn and it went out right then and there. After leaving work today again it failed. I was only backing out when I lost power. I already got in touch with Ford and they did say it's a known issue but not a recall.

52 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2014

At first the power steering didnot work upon starting car, restarted and it worked. As time went on this got worse, having to resart several times and now once power steering works it will go off anytime even just drivingstraight on the highway. Also when power steering is working the steering wheel shakes. This should be a recall as there have been so many complaints that Ford has offered a torche sensor kit instead of having to replace the whole steering column.

53 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

Upon starting my car, I realized I could not turn the steering wheel without great effort. Tried it the next day, and the power steering was working, although the steering wheel was vibrating strangely. Have had the same problem 2 additional times. After reading numerous other entries on NHTSA website on this same issue, I learned that that if I turned the car off and then turned it on, power steering resumed. This worked for me this morning after 3 attempts. Brought into mechanic and they could not assess issue. Will be bringing into dealer this week. Very concerned about what happens if I'm driving and this outage reoccurs.

54 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

I was heading to work one morning, and I started the car up and didn't have power steering. I shut the car off, and the steering came back. (at the beginning, shutting the car off would fix the problem right way. ) I pulled out of my driveway and drove down the road with the steering wheel shaking. There was also a quiet grinding noise coming from the steering column. As the car slowed down (at stop lights etc. ), the steering wheel shook more and the noise grew a little louder. As the days went on (3-4 days later), the shaking and noise got worse until it was an uncontrollable, constant shaking of the steering wheel and the noise became so loud and horrid that I thought the car might break down. Within that week, as I started my car, the power steering went out about a total of 10 times, and I had to shut off the car and restart it. Unlike at the beginning, by the end of the week, I had to shut my car off 4-5 times before the steering would come back. The last day of driving the car, the steering wheel was so loose that it was hard to control on the back roads/highways/freeways and over pot holes. At one point, I made a right hand turn, and I almost thought I was not going to be able to bring the steering wheel/car back. Thankfully, I (and no one else) has died from this manufacturer defect in the 2008 Ford Escapes, but is that what it is going to take in order for something to be done?.

55 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2014

At first it was hard to start unless I pushed the key in while starting then the power steering just went out totally. The steering wheel also vibrated when sitting and idleing prior to the steering going out.

56 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2014

I was pulling my 2008 Ford Escape out of the driveway when the power steering failed. The ignition was turned off and then turned back on and problem seemed to resolve. However, that was 2 weeks ago and it has been happening every day since. Also, the steering wheel now vibrates from side to side all the time. The vehicle only has 56,000 miles on it! I'm concerned that it might go out while I'm driving. It's a costly repair that our family can't afford. I've seen thousands of complaints on multiple websites. How can Ford not issue a recall? this is a huge safety issue!!.

57 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

Went to turn on the vehicle and had no power steering. The car had been sitting, in the cold, a couple days. I contacted the dealership and they suggested turning the car off and back on but this didn't work. I was not close to home so I drove the car, with no power steering to the closest auto shop. At this time I found out that it was an electric power steering unit. When the vehicle was turned back on at the repair shop the powersteering worked fine and I drove home. Over the next month this was happening more and more and I started hearing a "noise" and the steering wheel would move when idling. Yesterday, driving down the highway I lost all powersteering. I would have to turn the car off/on several time to get it to work and when it is working the steering wheel shakes! I was astounded when looking on line to check for a recall, the number of complaints and customers having the same issue. . . Same model and year, and yet nothing has been done. I spoke with Ford this afternoon, both my dealership at home and the main customer service center to which I was told "that they are unaware of any issues, no recall has been issued, and they recommend that I get the repair completed". Of course the repair has to be done, to the toon of $1500. . . This is crazy. This is clearly and issue with a major part of the vehicle, a huge safety concern as well. No power steering on a 4wd vehicle is dangerous!.

58 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

Power steering went out. Was near home and able to get vehicle into driveway. After shutting off and re-starting power steering worked. Steering wheel vibrated while driving until repair made.

59 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2014

Steering wheel began to shake or shimmy when the vehicle was stopped and idling. Turned vehicle off and back on. . . The began to drive, power steering was out completely. The vehicle would steer - but was very hard to control. Pulled over shut vehicle off, power steering resumed, but steering wheel was shaking again at idle. Very dangerous if it were to happen at an speed. My daughter would not be able to control the vehicle, I am very strong and it was hard for me to control. This should be recalled - as so far I see 190+ complaints on this site, and many others on different sites, while trying to find a diagnosis for the problem. Ford should address this immediately.

60 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

When I start the car intermittently I have no power steering until I turn off the car a restart it. Also when the car is idling the steering wheel shakes and makes a nocking noise. I am very concerned that the steering will go out on the highway and cause an accident.

61 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

Sometimes when the vehicle is started the power steering doesn't work, and when it does the steering wheel shakes when the vehicle is idling as well as when it's driving.

62 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2013

This problem originally occurred on Dec 12th 2013. When I started my car,the steering wheel was locked. I then turned off the car, pulled the key out of the ignition and restarted it,and the wheel was fine then. As I was driving, my steering wheel would shake slightly back and forth without me touching it. There were no indicator lights lit up on my dashboard. Then while driving some more,I heard a faint click, and my steering wheel was locked again,it had absolutely no power steering and it took all of my strength to turn the steering wheel. That has continued to happen every time I drive now,and recently it has gotten to the point where the steering wheel is always locked with no power steering. I took the car to the mechanic and was told that the electronic steering sensor is malfunctioning and the whole steering coloumn needs to be replaced and it is a very big job. I am still awaiting my quote to see exactly how much it will cost me. I have had this car for only 7 months and it seems like this is a common problem among the 2008 Ford Escapes. I do not understand why this issue has not been recalled, they can recall things like a power window for locking up and not being able to go up or down, but not this. This problem could cause serious injury and possibly death. This is the only car I have and I rely on it heavily. It it almost impossible to turn the steering wheel and this issue needs to be taken care of by Ford already. How many complaints do they need before this problem is addressed??.

63 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

After taking the vehicle to a Ford dealer for an oil change the next day my wife started the car in a school parking lot and there was no power steering. Not knowing what to do, she drove it. After she parked it and started it again the power steering came back. The power steering now goes out intermitently when starting the vehicle, so we turn it off and back on and the power steering is restored. At stops the steering wheel vibrates side to side, but when the vehicle starts moving the vibration goes away. I see many posts on this known issue, is someone going to have to get hurt or die before a recall is issued on this problem.

64 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2013

During lunch hour slowed to make a right hand turn and brakes seemed to lock and grind. Steering wheel vibrated and the abs and traction control light came on. Attempted to accelerate and the car seemed to be locked up for a few seconds. Vehicle behind me almost hit me due to vehicle failure. Lights would not go off for about 1 minute after accelerating to about 25 mph. While driving about 10 more minutes they illuminated several more times. During drive home the same thing happened 3 more times and always when slowing to make a turn and then attempting to accelerate again. Now abs light won't go off at all.

65 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact started the ignition and the noticed that the steering wheel had seized. Additionally, the steering wheel would shake whenever the contact was driving 35 mph or more or when accelerating from a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The technician stated that the steering column would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 57,960.

66 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2013

Got off work drove across street, parked for an hour, got back in started to back up and it was like I didn't have power steering. Let other car go, continued across street to gas station to check under the hood. Nothing looked wrong. Started car back up and we had power very confused. I guess it's possessed. Like when the horn would make noise on its one couple yrs back. Didn't get too far and all of a sudden the steering wheel made shakin noise like it was grinding and we lost power again. Turned around and headed to dealership. They said it was steering columm control board. 1400. 00 to fix. Don't have that kind of money. Need to see if we can install it ourselves. From the sounds of it it looks as if they should have this recalled, for we will be on the hunt for a new car and we thought about a 3rd Escape but not now.

67 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2013

Multiple power steering faliure occurances resulting in loss of vehicle control while driving. Steering wheel vibrating and jumping while vehicle is stopped. Please investigate?.

68 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2013

Power steering keeps going in and out. Usually it will not work when I start the car but if I turn it back off and on a few times it starts working again. The steering wheel also vibrates or pulsates when I am driving. Hasn't happened while driving yet but I am scared that it is just a matter of time. Seen a lot of Ford Escapes having this problem.

69 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2013

While sitting idle at a light the steering wheel shakes, powering steering system shuts down while operating vehicle.

70 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

I was approaching a stop light and noticed that the steering wheel began to shake in my 2008 Ford Escape. At this time I still had power steering but the steering wheel continued to vibrate. As I proceeded through the light, it continued to shake with a slight grab to the right periodically. As I continued onto the freeway, the shake continued until the power steering went out completely. After getting home, I shut the car off and waited a few minutes, started it up again and the vibration in the steering wheel was back but the power steering was working again, after a few minutes, the shake was gone and so was the power steering. To this date, 03/10/13, I do not have power steering at all. I took it to my Ford dealer and was told that the whole steering column needs to be replaced because of the torque sensor in the column. My mileage at the time I noticed the shake was 82,000. The cost to replace this is outrageous, and the safety issues involved are severe cause for concern. I noticed that there are many, many other 2008 Escape owners with this same issue. This should be a recall!!!.
