2013 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to coolant system and egr system issues. The consumer requested that the vehicle be included in the recall 17s09.
As of 1/16/2020, I have had my 2013 Ford Escape for 6 months. A week after I got my car, it overheated. I was forced to pull over as the engine stalled and seized up. I had the car towed to the dealer and had the thermostat fixed. After two or three months, the car started overheating again. I decided not to take the car back to the dealer after many phone calls and a very unpleasant experience. I took it to two mechanic shops and they could not find what was wrong. It continued to overheat, even with coolant filled in the reservoir. I did some research and from what I have seen, overheating is a common problem with this year and model. I have called Ford and they told me that there are no recalls for overheating associated with my VIN number. I took it to a mechanic shop for a third time, after my car stalled on a cold winter's day with my child in the backseat. They notified me that the coolant bypass valve was not functioning properly. They also notified me that it was part of recall 13s12 (NHTSA-13v583). I made an appointment with a local Ford dealership to have the call inspected for all recalls. Apparently my car was not effected by this recall that effected other 2013 Ford Escapes that causes the overheating. I regret making this purchase. My 2002 Honda accord has proved to be way more reliable than this Ford. I would not purchase a Ford again and plan on trading it in after I get this problem resolved. I'm disappointed that I have to pay out of pocket when it is obviously a malfunction in the manufacturing of this vehicle.
Mid-day, 91 degrees. Car shuddered reversing out of the driveway. No previous problems. I waited and car idled well. I left the neighborhood and turned left into traffic on a five-lane road. I lost acceleration merging from the center turning lane. The vehicle revved, getting fuel, but there was no forward movement, no shuddering, nothing. I moved the vehicle into "sport" mode, in case I had bumped the selector, but it made no difference. Traffic honked and swerved around me. I was able to get into the right lane with my hazard lights on. My car shuddered off, completely and I lost power steering just as I completed the maneuver. I restarted my vehicle and the vehicle shuddered to a side-street, where I idled for five minutes and called for assistance. Assistance was going to take a long time and I suffer from a medical condition that makes me fragile in the heat. I tested the vehicle on the side streets and it performed. I was able to get the vehicle home slowly.
The Escape has stalled several times. First time it stalled and stopped with no indication of issue on interstate. We were able to get it moved to parking lot after several times waiting for it to start. Had car towed to mechanic. The car never stopped for him. We picked it and drove in the morning to church and back with no issues. I drove it in afternoon temp around 85 degrees for about 3 miles. Car stopped running with no indication of problem while pulling up to stop light. After about 2 minutes car restarted and quit running again less then 1/4 mile while trying to get off street. I tried replacing ignition relay as noted by several websites but no change. Have no idea what is causing the unsafe sudden stalling. Car going back to mechanic. This is a very unsafe problem.
As I was driving to work (at ~35 mph), an alert appeared warning me of the engine overheating and to "stop soon". I lost power for the most part and had to coast into a parking lot. I had been driving for less than 5 minutes (cool day, ~60 degrees f, dry conditions).
Bought vehicle in September of 2018, which several instances of this problem. Vehicle is continuously going into a limp mode due to "false overheating". Engine thinks it is overheating within 5 minutes of starting vehicle, and will stall while driving, causing a safety issue to other drivers on the road. With 20 degree weather, it is impossible for an engine to fully warm. Occurrences of this problem happened on the following dates: 12/31/18 - one time, a restart of the vehicle resolved 1/10/19 - one time, left vehicle at work at after driving 2/15/19 - 4 times in a row, and had to have vehicle towed to a shop 2/18/19 - soon after the shop had it and repaired a coolant leak. Limp mode occurred on the highway, which is not not extremely dangerous, but I genuinely feared for my life. While the shop was having trouble replicating the problem today, as was I, this is a legitimate safety concern. Overheating code was pulled by columbia car care in columbia, mo. Steve, the owner of the shop can attest to the issue I was having. Other Ford Escapes with the 1. 6 motor have recalls for cooling issues, and it is interesting that mine does not have recalls per your web site. This should be looked at.
Defect code p1299 says engine overheating but just started it and it is 6 degrees outside when it happened so hardly hot. . . . I pulled out of work parking lot and car entered 'limp' mode - I could not even back up to get back in the work parking lot. Let it 'cool down' for 15 minutes and then tried again to get it to the dealer just 1/4 mile from my work. Died again on the main road - pulled to the side and waited another 15 minutes (did I mention it was 6 degrees?) then started and flew to the dealer and it limped the last 100 feet again. The dealer did not have time to look at it the next day so I had it towed to another service station and they found the code. But engine is not overheated. . . No sign of leaking or anything but the code - we wiggled all the wires on the sensors and car started and is running with no issue. . . . Yet. Going to get the sensor replaced now and hope it solved the problem.
Vehicle computer reports that vehicle is overheating and places the car into limp mode. Occurs while driving or as soon as it is place in drive after vehicle it has been siting overnight (in 60 degree conditions, did not happen at all during the summer). First occurrence was Dec 2017 when the vehicle was being driven on a highway (55 mph) lost power and limped to a parking lot. Needed to be towed to repair shop. Local napa repair shop did a full review and found nothing wrong. Did not occur at all over the summer, latest was 10/5/18. Vehicle was sitting over night (60 degrees), vehicle started, reversed from driveway and once in drive it entered limp mode stating that it was overheating.

First incident: August 3rd 2016 while driving 50mph car displayed a engine overheating warning message and slowed down as I pulled off the road. After a few minutes I was able to drive again and the message did not reappear, the check engine light was on. I took the car to kearney person Ford 7303 clairemont mesa blvd san diego, CA 92111 they told me they couldn't find anything wrong and turned the check engine light off. Second incident: driving to work earlier this year 2017 I got the same message that my engine coolant was low, and to slow down because of critical overheating, even though I had just had the car serviced for a regular maintenance check, once again at kearny person Ford. I was driving normally on a road at around 30-40mph but accelerating when the message popped up. I refiled the coolant as the check engine light did not turn on. Third incident: this was the most dangerous time. Critical engine overheating message and low coolant message popped up without warning while driving up hill in traffic going about 20mph on the I-5s at the in California grapevine. The engine nearly shut off and limped on just a couple cylinders as I tried to get to the shoulder. Smoke was coming out from under the hood and the engine was hot. It all happened immediately and without warning, the temp gauge was normal and then bam! overheated with warning messages crippling the car. Driving slowly but the weather was hot it was nearly 110 degrees outside. Seems super dangerous. Because of the lack of warning when these incidents happen. The way that the coolant just disappears, and the smoke and chance of fire.
Coolant light came on and after coolant was added the check engine light came on and what not go out. Also every time I added fuel my vehicle would not start. Each time I would add fuel it took several tries to start the engine. Every other day I would not be able to start the engine for hours. I took the car in to a Ford dealership for inspection I had several codes come up. A failed coolant bypass valve was replaced as well as a fuel pressure sensor. Codes (p 0087) (p 018 c) (p 26 b 7) (p 1450) the restraints module control replacement and did a coolant system flush. After extensive work and over almost $2,000 spent my vehicle engine light keeps coming on and I continue to have trouble starting my vehicle after adding fuel every single time. The fuel issue really worries me because whenever I get out of my vehicle I smell gas and don't think that is normal. I really hope I can get this resolved soon because I cannot go without driving but I am loosing sleep as well as being very nervous when I have to refuel. Please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible because I am starting to regret choosing a Ford!!!!!!.
