2 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/13/2020

Brakes just went mushy 2 days ago. Pedal goes all the way to the floor and braking is slow and poor - very worried about driving the car and being able to stop safely. Looking online it sounds like an abs failure.

3 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/22/2020

Abs failure. The car brakes may at times lock-up without notice. Transmission failure: the transmission acts as if it's in neutral when in both forward gear or reverse. Transmission appears to be in good repair but this issue persist. This issue appears to occur from a beginning acceleration such as putting car in reverse and accelerating or putting car in drive and accelerating. This also happens when you may be stopped at a traffic light and attempt to proceed only to have the car act as if it's in neutral. This slipping in and out of gear issue seems to only happen from a take off speed.

4 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Vehicle had an abs event and after this occurred the brake pedal traveled to the floor to stop vehicle. It has twice returned to normal but no longer. I have researched this thoroughly to find this an abs module assembly failure. This unit manufactured by continental automotive systems has a documented history of the seiko zinc plated valves not seating the seals after an abs event due to corrosion and the valve remaining open. This hcu / hcu assembly are having the same reaction as documented in NHTSA recall no. 19v-904 or manufacturer recall no. 19s54 with other Ford vehicles. The only variance here is the assembly plants of hermosillo mexico and kansas city. The claim is the dot 3 fluid used is problematic but the fact that a zinc carboxylate gel is being formed in the hcu is unchanged regardless of the manufacturer. Ford has claimed only a 1% failure with the above mentioned campaign but have totally left off the same year Escape's with the identical safety issue in this campaign. I am urging the NHTSA to please look further into this matter of safety. I have tried reaching your contact person demara magruder with a phone call and email but have gotten no response back on this matter. I again urge the NHTSA to open this well documented abs module failure to be opened to the (2009)Ford Escape. This replicated event is a common happening with many Ford Escape owners on the internet. Lastly I will let you know I did contact my dealership where I purchased this vehicle new but to no avail. They said they simply could not help me with the repairs on my Escape with it's age and milage of 100k. This should not be a factor with the safety of my 18 year old daughter who was driving when this occurred! thank you, kevin feldkamp 1050 benz avenue cinti. , ohio 45238 2009 Ford Escape XLT 1fmc03g99ka43582.

5 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2011 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

The abs braking system on the Ford Escape hybrid failed unexpectedly and without warning at only 60k miles. The vehicle was in motion, and all the lights came on at once and the system read "check brakes. " the brakes felt loose, and I took it a mechanic the next day. They thought that pressure was getting sent unevenly to both sides of the vehicle, so they flushed the brakes. However, they discovered total abs failure, and a $3000 fix associated with it. This is a known issue all over the internet. There are facebook groups advocating for a recall of this vehicle. We were lucky that we didn't crash into someone. The brakes only work if you apply extreme force to them, and even then they get loose and the car starts to roll away. These issues are becoming extremely prevalent now in 2020 that the 2008-2011 era of this hybrid is getting a bit older. That being said, this model only has 60k miles on it and should not have had brake failure. . Read more...

8 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/19/2019

Recently purchased 2008 Ford Escape hybrid. On August 19th, when I turned the car on with approximately 161,200 miles, the "check abs" light came on. While driving within city traffic with the "check abs" light on, the car had sluggish braking. Applying the brake would slow down the vehicle, but the brake pedal would need to be pressed hard for the final 10-15 feet of the stop. The next morning, when I turned the car on again, the abs light had disappeared and braking had returned to normal. The car is currently being checked at virginia tire & auto 6620 backlick road, springfield, va 22150. It seems very dangerous that the abs can fail intermittently, and a severe defect in the brakes should be recalled and repaired immediately by Ford.

9 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

Car was braking erroneously as I was driving. Misdiagnosed twice, it was ultimately diagnosed as abs module failure. This put a strain on my engine and transmission and of course, the brakes. This is a very expensive repair if you get a new module and even with a rebuilt one. The initial rebuilt one as also faulty. Repair place struggled to get a unit because they are so in demand, I rebuilt my transmission less than three years ago m(which also shouldn't have happened) and now it is damaged. Even with a used unit, the total repair was $1200, not counting the rental car after the first replacement module failed. As this is a brake issue, it was recommended that I report it.

10 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/24/2018

Abs system failure with no warning lights on dash and no codes scanned. Brake pedal went to floor barely could stop the vehicle. Had abs system replaced by a private repair shop. There should be a recall on this as it happens on these cars frequently from what I heard. Very dangerous!.

11 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/25/2018

Hello, I just spent 1/2 hour with Ford motor company on the phone about their Ford Escape 2010 and the faulty abs module. I almost had a wreck because of this well-known problem for Escape and other models. The brake pedal would depress almost to the floor while very slowly decelerating the car, I often had to pump the brakes to build some pressure in order to stop. Clearly, an abs failure! do we have to work with lawyers to get that resolves or start a social media campaign and other blogs?? would love to hear from you. It's not the first problem with Ford about this issue.

12 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/24/2018

Brake failed the regen system failure and abs brake failure caused an almost serious accident $7000 for repairs for something that has numerous problems from 1000s of others having the same issue it is a 2007 Ford Escape 2 wheel drive hybrid.

13 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2015 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/23/2018

Abs brake failure. Going down a hill, brakes went to the floor (abs light came on), then all of a sudden the light shut off, brakes came back, but not before hitting the vehicle in front of us.

14 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/16/2015

On 10-10-2015, our 2013 Ford Escape 4wd started displaying an abs error code, along with a traction control system error and a "hill start assist not available" error message, simultaneously. The abs brakes would engage at low travel speed. We took it to the dealer, who determined that a rear wheel sensor had failed. They kept the car for two weeks and returned it on 10-21-2015. It had 24,273 miles on it. Now, 3 weeks later, on 10-16-2015, the very same problem has reoccurred, with the dash lights displaying for the abs system failure, the traction control system failure and the "hill start assist not available". The abs system engages at low speeds causing the brakes to grab, rendering the car unsafe to drive. This car is a 'lemon' in our opinion, as it has had 5 major breakdowns, including a major engine problem at 720 miles, a failure of the air bag controller, two problems with the abs system, as documented herein, and two recalls related to the engine potentially catching on fire due to a fuel leak (a recall, followed by a recall to fix the recall). I sincerely believe that this vehicle is dangerous and have asked the Ford motor company to buy back this vehicle several times, but they have refused to do so. I fear that my wife and I are not safe while driving this car due to the high number of defects on this one particular vehicle. I am reporting this abs/traction control problem since it has now happened twice, as I believe it likely impacts other Ford Escapes made at the same time, and likely indicates a bad batch of wheel sensors that are failing prematurely in the field. Since the failure of the wheel sensor disables the abs and tcs systems, this is a dangerous defect, as it can happen completely at random. My wife was 100 miles from home last time and had to drive back with the abs & tcs not functioning. ) this car is "unsafe at any speed"!.

15 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

Approaching a stop sign on a hill, I hit a rough patch in the street and my brakes failed to the point I had to frantically pump them to not roll straight into the intersection. For the next three or four days, any time I braked, the pedal would depress almost to the floor while very slowly decelerating the car, I often had to pump the brakes to build some pressure in order to stop. Clearly an abs failure, it seemed to "fix itself" after those few days. Now again, 10/23/2014, hit a pothole pulling into a driveway and the brakes are doing the same thing. Googled the problem and read about broken tone rings (similar complaints about loss of abs), but no lights illuminate when it happens. I need to take it in, but I know the dealership will give me the run-around and try to charge me an arm and a leg for something that's clearly a manufacturing defect.

16 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

The tone ring which inputs pulses to the abs computer fails on many many Ford Escapes. When this happens the abs computer applies the brakes in abs mode even though the vehicle is on dry pavement. This causes the vehicle to swerve, making directional control difficult. This can cause accidents! there is one hall effect ring on each wheel. The state of virginia states that this condition of a failed ring is a safety defect. See safety rejection dated 3-16-15 I. D. 60250935 enclosed.

17 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2001 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/20/2012

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the abs module system failed and the abs warning light illuminated sporadically. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who ran a diagnostic test and stated that the abs, vehicle speed control, brake lamps and switches failed because the abs module was not working. The vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign id number: 07v156000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock: control unit/module) however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified who advised the contact that there was an open manufacturer’s recall on the vehicle but the parts needed for repairs were not yet available. The contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

18 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

Tone ring failure on abs brake system on 2006 Ford Escape. Brake fade until computer system notes sensor failure and indicates abs failure light. The system does this for each engine startup--brake fade until error coded out. A cheaply made piece, low parts replacement but expensive mech repair requiring removal of caliper and axle hub. . . . All items that are well rusted into place. An extremely poor design for such an important safety feature.

19 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

2006 Ford Escape XLT, c/o left front abs (anit lock braking system) tone ring failure. . . At 94,782 miles on my odo my left front abs tone ring broke completely in-half causing a abs sensor failure and the brakes became temporarily semi-unresponsive for a few seconds ( 3-5 seconds ) when I pressed on the brakes to stop the car. Braking was greatly reduced as if the car thought I was sliding on ice or snow. After the system detected failure ( 3-5 seconds) the abs light came on in my dashboard and the abs system seemed to be deactived by the car. When I got home and took the left front wheel off and inspected my brakes and abs sensor, I noticed the left front abs tone ring was completely rusted, free spinning loosely around the axle and was broken completely on one end. I went onto google and researched this problem and found that many other people have encountered the same problems on their Ford Escapes. I would like this to be investigated as I think that perhaps the abs tone rings Ford used are faulty and could pose a danger to motorist by causing significant loss of braking ability over a few seconds as direct result of the abs tone ring failure. The abs tone ring is replaceable by Ford or you can buy the part at a parts store. Repair does involve removing part of the axle, so it is best done by a mechanic or trained professional.

20 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/06/2010

Abs failure, caused by broken front tone ring reoccurs in October 2011 (second time this has happened) car now has only 49029 miles.

21 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/06/2010

Abs and 4x4 sensor lights activate and flash on dashboard abs braking fails , sensor rep[laced and went out again after a year. Seems to be a problem with numerous Escapes as found in online search.

22 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

Abs failure while driving due to 2 broken tone rings . This seems to be a common problem on all year Escapes . Sudden lose of anti lock causes longer stopping distances and can cause lock up which can cause loss of control.

23 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2007 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/26/2010

2007 Ford Escape 4wd front abs system failure. The tone ring on my Escape broke on my vehicle causing it to fail. My braking system didn't work. I looked up the problem and found it to be very common, a tone ring failure. I feared for my safety as well as my wife's. We drive this car a long way to work. There are so many repairs to this 'problem' that I believe it warrants an investigation. I refuse to drive the car until the problem is fixed as I now have no brake system.

24 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

I have a 2006 Ford Escape v6 2wd. Both abs tone rings cracked with only 58k miles. This is the same defect that Ford recalled on the 2001-2004 models. This defect causes the abs system to fail and turn off. I have read that the 2005,2007, 2008, and 2009 have the same failures. That means every model from 2001-2008 have had the same defect without being addressed.

25 Abs Brake Fail problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/18/2007

(1) noticed abs light was lit, took vehicle to palmer Ford in chelsea mi to find out what the problem with my 2002 Ford Escape could be. They gave a break down the excitor ring (for the aba braking system) that is attached to the half shaft of my Escape was broken. This also caused the abs sensor to fail (2)as to failure. . . . Did get a second opinion from a different service station about the excitor ring. . . Palmer Ford in chelsea mi said that they where not aware of any other Escapes having this issue. . . . Unlike the second service station, which had seen this problem in the Escapes. (3)to correct the problem. . . I have had the half shaft replaced (which includes this excitor ring for the abs braking system)and the sensor. . . .
