Ford Escape owners have reported 48 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Ford Escape based on all problems reported for the Escape.
For the last few days, intermittently, the abs warning light would come on, then the traction control light, then the hill assist light, then the 4 wheel drive would disengage, and now the parking brake fault light. You never know when it will happen as it happens intermittently, and they don't all fault at the same time. It seems each consecutive day the number of problems grows. My greatest concern is that now the traction control light will flash and the throttle will become unresponsive. You never know when it may happen. Twice today it nearly caused an accident as I was pulling into traffic. The engine was running, but would not accelerate. A serious safety concern. I am filing this report just in case I get injured or killed before I can have it checked by a Ford dealer.

Abs and emergency brake light comes on and says regen brakes disabled. Had it checked and was told hcu is bad. From everything I've read and been told Ford should've issued a recall on this issue.

Traveling on main highway with my 3 grandchildren when the abs light came on and the check brake system light comes on, brakes go almost all of the way to the floor to get the vehicle to stop. Shortly after, the lights went off and the brakes worked fine. This has happened intermittently, which is very dangerous our mechanic said this is something that only a dealership can fix and it is a very expensive repair. There was a recall 19s54 on other Ford vehicles 2006-2010 Ford fusion, Mercury milan, Lincoln zephyr and mkz vehicles for this exact issue. (the valves within the abs hydraulic control units (hcu) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly. ) this recall should apply to the Escape hybrid as well. This is nothing to do with owner maintenance. This is a design default and should be covered at Ford's expense.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and was firm. The contact stated that added pressure was needed to slow the vehicle, extending the braking distance. The abs and brake warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The following day the vehicle was taken to hoffman Ford Lincoln (600 connecticut blvd, east hartford, CT 06108) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the hydraulic control unit was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 121,000.
Brake warming light and message. Brakes work but only partly - okay for general driving but not for emergency stops. Diagnosed by Ford dealer for over $5000 in repair. Quick internet search reveals that this is a common problem in Ford Escape hybrid vehicles, but Ford refuses to repair the obviously faulty units. This should be a recall on all units, or at least free repair for failed units. The replacement is more than the vehicle is worth. There are only 143,000 miles on the car, and otherwise it works fine.

When running the car (stationary, and then moving), abs light came on, the brake light came on, and it said "regen brakes disabled". Attempting to drive the car, the brakes seemed to work most of the time, but were more difficult to depress sometimes. After taking it to a mechanic, we were informed that the hydraulic control unit was faulty and needed to be replaced.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid. The contact stated that when the driver started the engine, the brake light illuminated. The contact also advsised that the brake pedal felt loose when it was engated. The vehicle was taken to an unknow mechanic that performed a diagnostic and advised that the vehicle brake hydraulic control unit failed. The contact also mention that the brake hydraulic control unit was replaced several times and the repair did not correct the failure. The contact also advised that that several codes was received when the diagnostic was perfoemed code 1491 and code u2023. The manufacturer was contacted. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in the brake reacall. The failure mileage was 159,000. Li.
Within a month of purchasing vehicle, mileage 67,000, complete brake system failure. Could have been fatal and will be if not corrected. Many exact complaints found online. Vehicle failed to stop coming to light. Had to pull off the side of the road into a wooded area for the vehicle to stop. Felt like vehicle was sliding on road. Later realized it was a abs system failure not sliding. Abs light is on. Brake system needs service light on. Emergency brake light stays on. Approximately 75% of the time, when first driving vehicle, only the service brake display is on. The vehicle will begin to buck/stutter, steering wheel shakes, and traction control warning light illuminates. After accelerating, that stops and returns to what I described. Above. I read since there were no fatalities reported Ford will not recall. I am certain there have been fatalities due to this problem, just not identified.
When I bought the car, it was over 12 years old and had approximately 137k miles. I experienced recurring brake problems about a month after purchasing the car: on some days, when starting the car the abs failure light and the red brake failure light would remain illuminated and the "check brake system" message would appear. Sometimes restarting the car cleared the errors, but most of the time they would remain the entire day. The following day the failures often cleared up. While these failure modes were active, the brake pedal had some pressure behind it, but braking took longer and strong braking led to wheels locking up. (like in the days before abs) over time, the failure modes persisted longer to the point where over the past two weeks, there was only one period of a half-hour where the car did not exhibit the failure condition. In addition, the "regen brakes disabled" message also started appearing, but that message may be deceptive because the battery status gauge shows a strong charge indication when the brakes are applied. In all cases, the failure modes appeared immediately on startup and persisted while the car was running. In the shop, these diagnostic codes were reported: c1313, c1478, c1480, c1526. The mechanic instructed me to take the car to a Ford dealer because he was not convinced that replacing the master cylinder (an expense exceeding $2000) would fix the problem.
A year ago brake system light came on/off. Had front brake line changed. Brake system came on again off & on operating okay until a month ago the abs light with brake system on and vehicle had no brake control forward and backward. Had brakes pads changed and hoses for brake system checked. And still abs + brake system came on and no brake control. Had car towed from home to dealership. Asked if there were any recalls for braking and was told non. Luckily most on the non braking functions happened in low speed area, neighborhood, side streets and a little on main 2ndary road. There's lots of similar complaints but no recall for the same problems. Safety issue.

Complete brake failure. Driven home at 40 mph and the brake light and the abs light came on and there was a beep. There were then no brakes at all. Luckily, I was able to get to the side of the road and coast to a stop. Turned off the truck and started it again and it had brakes. On this last incident, the same thing in the same order happened. This problem is very dangerous. It is intermittent thus making it hard to diagnose.

Tl the contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape. While driving 50 mph, the brakes failed to operate when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the brake lights illuminated on and off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the exciter ring was fractured. The mechanic attempted to glue the piece back together, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 141,000.
My wife and I purchased a 2017 Ford Escape, brand new, 6 months ago. We noticed that the brake light plastic cover was fogging over making it hard to see the brake light. After checking with our dealer, mac haik Ford, georgetown, texas, I was informed that this is normal. Normal? sounds more like a safety concern to me. I was also told that water leaking into the brake light unit was also normal. I can't imagine allowing water to collect inside an electrical item as important as a brake light and is very strange and very wrong! if it's fogging up now what will it look like a year from now or even two years. Ford motor company made a mistake and they need to replace this brake light unit! it's a safety issue and they know it. Joel atkeisson, leander, texas.
When the vehicle was started, there was an unusual motor-like sound for a second-or-so coming from the front of the vehicle. The abs light and the parking brake light came on even though the parking brake was not engaged. The brake pedal had a spongy feel and the brakes were very ineffective. Applying the brakes caused the right-front corner of the vehicle to dive. Heavy application of the brakes caused the right-front tire to skid. It appeared that only the right-front brakes were working. When the vehicle was turned off, a high-pitched noise continued to come from the engine compartment. After turning the ignition on and off a few times, the high-pitched sound had ceased. After that, a driving test showed that the brakes had returned to working normally. This entire scenario has occurred multiple times.
The contact owned a 2001 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 12v005000 (service brakes, hydraulic), 12v353000 (engine and engine cooling), and 14v165000 (structure, vehicle speed control). The contact did not receive any recall notifications. The contact stated that the brake lights remained illuminated for an extended period of time. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic. While the vehicle was parked in a residental parking space, a security guard noticed smoke coming from the vehicle. After making a second round, the guard informed the vehicle owner that the vehicle was consumed by flames. The fire department extinguished the flames. A fire report was filed and the contact took pictures. The vehicle was parked and had not been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they would follow-up in writing, but did not provide a time frame for the recall repair. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

While driving abs, stability control and brake system lights come on and stay on. Steering feels odd. Hard/easy.
The abs light and brake light appeared on the instrument panel while driving on a state highway. Check brake system light appeared as a digital read out on the instrument panel. Turned off the engine believing it to be a 'reset' issue. The abs light and brake light did not come on again. Two days later, upon backing up these lights appeared again on the instrument panel. Called local Ford dealership to determine the problem. Dealership performed abs selftest and got code c1313-ao and u2023-a0. The codes indicated that the hcu (hydraulic control unit) required replacement. Dealership quoted $5,900. 00 repair cost to replace hcu sensor. The dealership did not caution us to not drive the car and we remain concerned about safe driving. He said, "the brakes will get mushy and we will eventually losing braking power. " checked Ford website to determine whether a recall for this safety issue had been posted. No recall by Ford noted at this time. A review of online posts indicates that many Escape hybrid owners have encountered the same problem and highway safety is concerning to owners.
I was coming to a stop sign and almost rear ended someone as the abs light and brake lights lit up on my dashboard, along with "service brake system". My foot went right to the floor to stop the truck. This continued to happen till I went to the dealership where I was told this is common and requires a $ 6000 new hydraulic control unit. Also I was told that you still have brakes just néed a lot more pressure. I'm not only one with this complaint. Very dangerous when you lose all brake pressure. This happens more often now and every time I restart the car it goes away and all works well till next time.
When driving the traction control light, brake light, and abs light came on. These light will not go out. Taking it to a mechanic, they tell me it is the abs module. The test cost $100. To replace the module will cost $1395. Should this not be a warranted item for safety? the shop told me that the abs and traction control will not work until the module is replaced.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Escape. While driving at any speed, the brake pedal failed and caused the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally. The abs and brake lights illuminated. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to both the dealer and an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was no issue with the vehicle, yet the failure progressed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,800.

While driving the vehicle the abs light came on, followed by the "service brake system" request light and the red brakes light. I had "soft brakes" but I could still use the brakes so I drove the vehicle to the local Ford ferrario dealership. It is now a week later and I was told that the abs needed to be replaced at a cost of $4800. 00. I then replied to not replace the abs as I have been a cautious driver for over 45 years and drive defensively. The shop tried unsuccessfully to bleed all the tire's brakes as I requested that I "at least" have hydraulic brakes and it be able to maintain the fluid level. All worked properly excepting the left front tire. This evening I went and retrieved the vehicle from the shop after they had replaced the leaking hose on the left front tire (also had them replace the hose on the right front tire). According to the conversation with the lead technician my front brakes were hardly used (over 60% of the cars braking) and looked like they were rusting or corroded over while the rotors and all the parts replaced exactly one year prior still looked new. Being confused about this, asked why no one had caught this earlier. While on the way home from the shop (without proper brakes and only the emergency hand brake and the hybrid low gear to slow down rapidly with) I reset all the functions like I normally do after a service shop visit. Low and behold the abs light went out, but there were still no brakes with small exception. I am now wondering both how and who is going to be able to repair this vehicle without further excessive cost (paid over $480. 00) that I've already incurred without having the brakes available to me. Because I work contract jobs and typically drive to jobs or job sites I am now without a vehicle. The larger concern for me is that this type of Ford SUV hybrid vehicle has a rash of brake problems.
The check brake system light is on and abs light on also. I drove it around the corner and brakes are very spongy and not fully responsive. I do not trust driving with this situation.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle but the vehicle did not drive. The check engine warning light and brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 153,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while parked and the key was turned, the vehicle had a loud noise from the front end, the instrument panel illuminated and the panel read "brake service needed". In addition, the abs and the brake warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was restarted and all of the warning lights turned off. The vehicle was driven to the dealer. The hydraulic brake system was replaced but the failure recurred numerous times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.
Braked at a light or stop sign at least 3 times when 2009 Ford Escape XLT wanted to accelerate.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). After the vehicle was repaired under the recall, the vehicle experienced several failures. The failures included the loss of anti-lock braking system, stability control, and the brake warning light was constantly illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,412.
I was in my car which is a stick shift, so I naturally don't have brakes preventing me from rolling on a hill. I drove up my drive way hill at the top I realized I had no brakes because I couldn't stop the car. I checked under the hood I had no brake fluid, no pressure on my brakes, and my brake light was still illuminated on the dash. I bought the car yesterday 9/20/2014 and by the time I woke up on 9/21 I had no brakes and was about to get on the road.
Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph, the contact smelled smoke coming from the engine. The contact noticed the vehicle was smoking and rushed the vehicle home. The vehicle was on was later taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake system module harness and the master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle also had problems with the abs brake light warning becoming illuminating also. The vehicles brake system was on fire, the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,000. VIN was not available. Ed.

I have the hybrid version of Escape. I was exiting a freeway when the abs yellow light and brake red light came on my dashboard. I then pushed the brake pedal and noticed the car wasn't slowing down as it should that's when I slammed on the brakes to make the car slow down. I immediately pulled over to the side of the road. The dashboard read regen brakes disable. I turned off the car and restarted it. The car worked like it did before but when I ran a diagnostic on the car it still read the regen brakes disabled. The car worked fine with the warning but eventually after driving for about 15 minutes the warning went away.
I was driving the vehicle and the red brake light came on with a message to check brake system. For the rest of the trip the brakes worked ok. I reached my destination and turned the car off. When I came back out and started the vehicle both the red brake light and the yellow abs light were on. When I was pulling out of the parking lot I pressed the brake pedal but the car did not stop. I had to use the hand brake to stop the car from going into the oncoming traffic. I backed up and parked the car and called a tow truck. When the car was loaded onto the tow, about an hour later, the brakes worked again.
I got my Ford Escape 2007 (42000 miles) completely inspected January 15th. Not even a month later my brakes did not work. I realized I had to completely press them to the floor and luckily I was going up hill so I was able to maintain a safe speed and pull over. I had no warning with my brake light until I pulled the car over and parked!! inspected a month ago. . . . . . . Nothing!!! warning. . . . . Nothing! 650. 00 dolars later they are fixed. This was very scary and unsafe and I am looking to see if there are any recalls out there.
The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while coming to a stop, the abs and the brake lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the master cylinder had to be replaced in the hydraulic system. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 139,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Escape hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the srs brake warning light illuminated while the contact was applying the brakes. In addition, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard abnormally and the vehicle failed to stop. The contact applied extreme pressure to the brakes in order to stop the vehicle as the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted and resumed normal operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and the contact was advised that the anti-lock brake hydraulic unit and master cylinder would need replacing, and two gallons of brake fluid was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 95,000.
