1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/24/2021

I was just starting off after getting a green light when a police car (that was to the right of me, was coming quickly out of a store parking lot) suddenly popped on the siren which startled me but caused me to stop suddenly! which means my brake pedal went to the floor immediately! and my car just kept going when it should've stopped! thank god there was no one behind me. After the police car passed I proceeded but realized that the brakes were loose and braking was low and not high as before. . . I pulled into a parking lot to test them and began to pump to see if they'd come back up. . . To no avail. And they were making an air sound when I pumped them. Then, to top it off the engine light came on and would not go off. Never had any warning lamps come on but did have the master cylinder replaced on 10/22/2020. I purchased the vehicle in December of 2019. ( yes, it is available for inspection upon request) I have an appointment with a repair shop tomorrow morning, but after reading all the complaints here I am mystified! at least I know not to waste money I don't have on any repairs. . . And still have to make the car payments, bummer! );.

2 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/17/2021

I was driving and my brakes felt soft, almost having to go all the way to floor. I took it to Ford dealership right away, uncomfortable driving my vehicle. After doing multiple things, dealership said was my master cylinder. So had my master cylinder. They call to say, they test drive my car and my car was stopping fine. I picked up my car, driving home, it felt exactly as when I dropped off my car. I called them back next day to advise of same and now they are saying it may be abs module.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/04/2021

When applying the brakes in a slushy parking lot the abs brakes were activated and the brake pedal went almost to the floor barely stopping the car. The master cylinder thought to be the problem has been replaced professionally. The pedal sometimes still goes almost to the floor and you never no when it will happen. An on line search proved a prevalent problem with the 2009 Ford Escape. The vehicle has only 68,540 miles! Ford is not willing to address this prevalent defect. Please help.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

All of a sudden soft pedal to floor after abs event. Replaced master cylinder, caliper, bleed multiple times - no success. Abs module identified as faulty but no code. Brakes are completely gone after service with dealer. Can not buy $1200 part to repair. Seems to be a bunch of these reports piling up in 2008-2009 generation over past 24 months. Ford fusion of same generation has recall for this part. Would drive this with out abs if I could but the design seems to cause all braking to be lost. Very dangerous! multi-generation Ford owner about to jump ship because no support.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at unknown speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the pedal went straight to the floor before stopping. The contact veered to the side of the road and waited for a few minutes before restarting the vehicle before driving back to the residence. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle but could not duplicate the failure. The mechanic suspected that the abs brake booster and brake master cylinder had caused of the failure. The failure recurred a few months later. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,550.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/15/2020

In November 2020 while driving my car, by brakes suddenly went soft. To stop my vehicle, I had to press my brake all the way down to the floor before the vehicle stopped. I immediately drove my vehicle to the nearest shop where I had my brake fluid flushed and my brake pads replaced. This temporarily resolved the issue. Exactly one week later, my brakes went soft again. I took my vehicle to my mechanic who said the issue was with my master cylinder. Replacing the master cylinder temporarily resolved the issue. A few weeks later, my brakes went soft again. I've had my master cylinder replaced four times since November 2020. It is now April 2021 and my brakes are still going soft. My vehicle has been with my mechanic for the past three weeks as he's been trying to diagnose the problem. He believes the issue is with the module of the absystem, but no codes register when he plugs the vehicle to the computer. Since this issue does not register a computer code, my mechanic has had issues with accurately identifying the cause of the constant soft braking I've been experiencing for the past five months. I' went online and googled this issue and I've come across forums where hundreds of other Ford Escape (2008 and after) owners are experiencing the same exact issue with their vehicles. All of the Ford Escape owners have had their master cylinders replaced multiple times with no permanent resolution. This is an extremely dangerous safety issue. The most important safety component on every vehicle is the braking system. Seatbelts are required to be worn by law, but what good is a seatbelt if the vehicle is unable to brake and mechanics are unable to diagnose the issue because a computer code does not register.

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/15/2020

While driving my car and attempting to turn into a parking lot, the brake pedal went to the floor and the brakes did not engage. Luckily no one was in front of me and I was able to eventually come to a stop. My mechanic replaced the master cylinder which did not fix the problem. It appears to be an issue with the abs system itself. However, even if that is the issue, the brakes should not stop working completely. Upon doing research this seems to be a common issue and presents a safety issue and needs to be addressed. From what I can tell Ford has been notified and claims the issue does not exist.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/16/2020

The brake pedal would intermittently go to the floor when depressed and I had difficulty stopping the vehicle. It has been at the Ford dealership for a month. New master cylinder, new brake booster and now going to try new abs module. The car is unsafe to drive. I saw many similar complaints about the abs module malfunctioning on this vehicle.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/15/2020

The master cylinder went bad recently on our vehicle. While replacing it at a local repair shop it was discovered that the brake booster and the abs module were also bad. These parts went out while driving causing the brake pedal to go to the floor. In researching this problem I discovered that it is a very common problem for the master cylinder and abs module to go bad on Ford Escapes. With so many of these parts going bad somebody should be looking into the problem, cars need reliable brakes. Unfortunately, if this happens going down the road it could cause wrecks. Since there are no recalls for this problem it is costing me over $1,000 to get it fixed.

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/28/2020

Replaced master cylinder, booster front rotors calipers and pads. Pedal is soft and goes almost to the floor when braking while stopping.

12 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

Brake pedal became very soft, has a very long amount of travel to engage brakes and is soft when being depressed. Took to earnhardt Ford in chandler, az, and they did a brake fluid flush and bleed to ensure no air was in the lines, they advised the brake booster, and master cylinder had actually been replaced already, and recently according to their information, we agreed to the diagnostic charge, and the diagnosis came back that the abs control module has failed, the service tech advised us he believes there is a pending recall/investigation relating to this issue during our visit which is what led us to make this report. Vehicle is only at 88,000 miles, and has no other existing issues. According to paperwork, they refilled the system with dot3 brake fluid during the bleed, control module was not available at the time so replacement was not possible.

13 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/13/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle wobbled without warning. The contact stated he pulled over and waited several seconds before he restarted the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to joe machens Ford (1911 w worley st, columbia, mo 65203) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 109,000.

14 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/27/2020

Driving down a hill, my brake pedal started depressing to the floor with a delayed stop on April 27, 2020. No pump or pressure. The front brakes were replaced recently (a month ago) and the rotors have been resurfaced. The brake pedal now goes all the way to the floor, and this is very dangerous in regular driving conditions and dealing with unexpected stops or road conditions. I took the vehicle to the car shop and they figured the master cylinder needed to be replaced. Upon testing the car out, the same spongy brake feel and brake pedal depression to the floor symptoms remained. The car shop informed me that they'd have to go through the Ford dealership for the part and repair of the abs, which would cost around $2,100. This is a definite safety issue. This needs to be a recall.

15 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

Driving in city traffic to the grocery store 2 miles from my house, average speed 35 mph, went to stop and brake pedal went almost to floor with very little/no stopping power almost had an accident. Stopped at store shut car off and then went home, it was still the same. Let the car sit a couple hours then used my pro scan tool to look for codes. No codes found either stored or engine running. Road tested the car with scan tool hooked up and no codes found and the brakes were operating normally. This is the second time in 6 months this has occurred. Bought this 2009 Ford Escape xls new in 2009,it only has 30,000 miles. The first time it did this was in sept. 2019 and then yesterday on Feb. 8 2020. I have researched this thoroughly and there are many reports of the same problem for this vehicle. This problem has been identified as the abs module due to defective internal valve seals that corrode and allow fluid pressure to by-pass causing the brake pedal to go almost to the floor similar to a faulty master cylinder. I have read that currently Ford has a recall on some vehicles with the same problem but different models. The average installation repair cost is over $ 2000. 00. This is a major safety defect/flaw/ issue and Ford should be compelled to replace and repair the abs system on all models sharing the same or similar system experiencing this anomaly and yes it is an anomaly. No warning light on{abs} no trouble codes either stored or running test. This car is garage kept, well maintained and in like new condition. Please help us,the consumer from this refusal by Ford to repair and replace the most important safety item found on a vehicle, the brake abs system. What will it take? a death perhaps and a major lawsuit?this car also has other safety recalls but don't appear on your website such as,electric power steering, throttle body and some others. "unsafe at any speed",sound familiar?.

16 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/23/2019

My daughter was driving her 2009 Ford Escape when the brake peddle went straight to the floor while attempting to come to a stop. My mechanic put a new break master cylinder system on and the brakes worked normally for a week. Then without notice the same frightening event occurred. She is totally dependent on her car which is sitting in the garage now. I called the Ford dealer and he said they were experiencing nation wide problem with the abs module and the item was on back order with no hope of a delivery date for a new one. I've noticed a big number of complaints on this exact issue. How many lives will it cost before Ford issues a recall and fixes this issue. My daughter can't afford the more than $1000. 00 cost of a repair. . . Even if the part was available.

17 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/20/2019

Had to make an emergency stop. The abs system engaged and there was no accident. Afterwards I had no brake. Car has been in four different repair shops and I have spent over $2000. I have had front brakes and rear brakes replaced, master cylinder replaced and a used abs module replaced. Still do not have proper brake. Found service notice online from Ford #19s54 which addresses this issue on some Ford vehicles and states a recall is in progress. . Escape is not included but problems are the same. Similar parts are used on many Ford vehicles. Escape should be included in recall. My car is useless without brakes.

18 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/13/2019

On multiple occasions went to press brake pedal but pedal doesn't depress all the way down, as if there was a block of wood or something preventing it. "regen brake disabled" light would appear on dash. Braking power adversely affected during these episodes. Causing to press down on brake very hard just to stop. On some occasions the multiple attempts at pressing of break would cause pedal to depress a little more and on some times non depressing brake pedal sensation would persist, with adverse brake affect. . . . Sometimes experiencing a hypersensitivity to pressing on brake with a choppy braking impact and sometimes experiencing a very limited braking effect, causing one to almost have to "stand up" on the break in order to prevent hitting whomever might be in front. I recall starting to experience this initially about a year ago - roughly Apr 2018 est. . Between then and recently sometimes braking would be more problemsome then other times the experiences seem to wax and wain but about mid December 2019 after parking at work in the morning and returning to the car to go back home. It appeared the emergency parking brake I engaged was stuck. When I turned the vehicle on I got the same illuminated regens brake disabled signal on the dash and it appeared I couldn't get the car out of park. I had to leave vehicle at work. I was away from work a week. Upon return the car started without the regen brake disabled signal but when I release emergency brake & shifted car into reverse, regens brake disable came on again, I was still able to drive however and did, slow and guarded but did. Now a new symptom engaged - I drove to a stop sign and when braking at the light and pulling off, brakes felt still engaged somewhat and progressively driving felt this way. I drove a bit more but shortly had to pull over and call a tow truck. Was told by mechs master cylinder nds replacg.

19 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

Starting in late 2018 when I applied my brakes they were soft and nearly went to the floor. We took it to the Ford dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong. The brakes started acting up again about a month later after visiting the dealership. Now they are soft spongy nearly all the time. It's scary to drive. If you have to brake suddenly they go nearly to the floor. I've gone online and found many complaints about the brakes, not only with 2009, but other years as well. Many have had their master cylinder replace only to find that didn't fix the problem. Please help b4 someone is injured or dies because their brakes fail !.

20 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2010 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/19/2019

Issue with abs module system- brake pedal was intermittently soft while driving, and brakes would activate late in pedal progression. Replaced master cylinder to fix issue. Issue continued and now has become more consistent. Brakes are not functioning properly because of a bad abs module, and Ford will not fix. Less than 80,000 miles on the car and brakes no longer work properly.

21 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/18/2019

Brake pedal travels almost to floor. Had brakes replaced, master cylinder replaced. All brake lines bled and still having same problem.

23 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

While driving on a city streets the vehicle suddenly does not break normal and when trying to brake the brake petal goes all the way to the floor. I had to pump the breaks multiple times to make it stop. Took the vehicle to the Ford dealership and after running a diagnose they guessed is the hcu or the master cylinder that is going bad and needs to be replaced but with no certainty. (again, they are not even sure because of the code they got from the diagnose). The vehicle has no light on for breaks or anything telling you is something wrong. I could not believe that Ford had not issued a recall on the vehicle, especially when I was told by Ford that they had seen this problem before in the Escapes, and replacing only the master cylinder would not fix the problem). Without the brake system fix the vehicle was extremely unsafe to drive. This is a very important safety flaw in the 2009 Escape & should be addressed to save lives and to not putting lives at risk. Ford needs a to do he right thing and do a recall on their abs module.

24 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 11/24/2018

Ford Escape - brakes started to get very very mushy. Once I pushed on the brakes, the pedal would keep dropping and not be responsive. Luckily I had enough car lengths in front of me and was going slowly enough on neighborhood streets to stop without injuring anything. Luckily I was not on the highway! this is extremely dangerous while driving, so I took my car to a local shop and they replaced the master cylinder. That still did not resolve the issue so they said the hydraulic control unit is faulty and I will not be able to drive my car (as the brakes could completely fail at any time). Took the car to Ford and they said it was the master cylinder (just replaced) and sad if it wasn't that - it was the hydraulic control unit. They did nothing to resolve the issue. This is extremely unsafe and I cannot drive my car since the brakes are failing!.

25 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/06/2018

Parked the 2009 Escape on a Friday night, everything felt perfectly normal. Went to drive it at 6am the following day and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. The master cylinder was replaced 2 times. Totaling over $600 and the issue still wasn't fixed. Now they say the abs hydraulic module needs replaced. The cost of the part is $1700, plus labor. How does all this with the brakes just go bad over night? seems like a lot of Ford Escape owners are having the same issues. So why isnt there a recall yet.

26 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/27/2018

Vehicle was in motion, getting ready to stop at the end of my driveway when the brakes barely braked, and I had to push the pedal all the way to the floor to make a complete stop. It's like that all the time now. Took it to a mechanic who replaced the brake master cylinder. Did not fix the problem. Mechanic said it's the abs system and that he sees that problem with a lot of Fords.

27 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/16/2018

Brake pedal is spongy or goes to the floor, started off just here and there but now is doing it almost daily. There really should be a recall on the abs control module. Sounds to me like this is a very serious problem with a lot of Escape owners. Are they going to wait till someone dies ( I hope it's not me) before they do something about it. Very scary to drive and very expensive if you have to pay to have it fixed. I know it could be nothing else, I have replaced every other part on the braking system and it still does the same thing. I replaced rotors, drums, pads, wheel cylinders, calipers, and master cylinder. Couldn't figure it out until I went online and saw all of the complaints. Ford, please recall the abs module on this vehicle before someone dies because of your stupidity!! by the way, my son had an accident in this vehicle because of this problem, it was minor. But if it would of been worse I would be suing your ass off.

28 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2017 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 12/25/2017

My 2017 Ford Escape with 18,000 had a master brake cylinder failure at 18,000 miles. The car was parked outside over night in single digit temperatures. When I started to drive it the next day on a residential street the brake pedal went to the floor the first time I applied the brakes at a stop sign. The brakes engaged , but not very well. The problem did not go away after trying several more brake applications, or by pumping the brake pedal. There was no indication from the car's warning systems that there was any problem with the brake system. The Ford pass app on my phone didn't report any problem either. The total lack of warning is a real concern. The problem did not go away after the car was parked in a warmer garage. I took the car to the dealer and they confirmed the problem was a failed master brake cylinder. They couldn't tell me what caused the failure or what failed. They did say the faulty brake cylinder would be sent to Ford for analysis. This brake system failure is a real concern. In over 50 years of driving I have never had a brake master cylinder fail on a car with such low miles. Without knowing why it failed I am concerned that it could happen again with the replacement brake master cylinder. Next time it could happen as I am driving the car at higher speed, or in traffic resulting in an accident. This type of brake system failure should not happen on any newer car, and the car's warning systems should be able let you know there is a problem with any part of the brake system.

29 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2013 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/28/2017

Yet when vehicle is off you feel the brakes when you turn on the vehicle you have to put the pedaal to the floor to stop the vehicle I have spent over 600 dollars with this vehicle and have only had it a little over a year. Not happy.

30 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 05/15/2017

Brake hose connector for front brakes is not allowing fluid to flow back to master cylinder. This causes brakes to remain applied and heating up. Temperatures predicted by Ford dealer (shane at bob allen Ford, overland park, KS) predicted to be as high as 1200 degrees fahrenheit. Potential for fire is high and brakes, rotors and calipers are ruined. Was noticed immediately by driver of vehicle. Not a delayed issue.

31 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

Continual brake failure. . Brake pedal goes to floor. Will stop after reapplied but will feel mushy! had master cylinder, one wheel cylinder replaced and they lasted a few weeks with same scenario happening again! local brake specialty shop can't get to the bottom of problem! Ford should have recall to get to bottom of this problem before someone gets hurt or killed.

32 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2008 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

When trying to brake the brake petal goes all the way to the floor. Took my vehicle in for service and repair. After spending hundreds of dollars for a new master cylinder, rotors, calibers, brake pads bleeding if the brakes multiple times we were then told that the abs module had two valves stuck in the open position. This part should last the lifetime of the car and there have been several complaints to Ford about this safety issue with this make and module. Ford needs a to do he right thing and do a recall on their abs module.
