36 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2009 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/13/2016

On January 18, 2016 I paid $2,829. 78 for brake repairs on our 2009 Ford Escape (v6 / 2-wheel drive, with 136,221 miles on the odometer). The brake repairs were required because of a failure in both the abs braking module and the brake master cylinder (please see attached invoice from cornerstone Ford), which caused the brake pedal to sink to the floor when brakes were applied. I could not believe that Ford had not issued a recall on the vehicle, especially when 2 major brake system parts failed at the same time (I was told by cornerstone Ford that they had seen this problem before in the Escapes, and replacing only the master cylinder would not fix the problem, because there was fluid blow-by past the seals in both parts). Without the brake system fix the vehicle was extremely unsafe to drive, especially in big lake, minnesota winter weather conditions (where I was driving the vehicle at the time of the brake failure). If I had not had the brakes fixed when I did, both my life and the lives of others could have been affected in a chain reaction collision I had on the interstate the next morning, after I had picked the vehicle up from repairs. About 6:20 am on January 19, 2016 I was traveling southbound on I-94 when traffic came to an abrupt stop. I had to immediately hit my brakes as others in front of me also did. The person behind me stopped in time, but the person behind him did not and in turn hit him and pushed him into the back of my vehicle. Both vehicles behind me had to be towed from the scene, but fortunately I did not (please see attached traffic report). If the brakes on our Escape had failed at the time of this accident (which is very possible, had the repairs not been made) I could have easily plowed into the vehicle(s) ahead of me and put more lives at risk. This is a very important safety flaw in the 2009 Escape & should be addressed to save lives.

40 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/25/2014

We purchased the vehicle 30 minutes prior. We were in stop and go traffic until leaving the freeway 1 lights prior to the accident. When my daughter tried to use the brakes the pedal went straight to the floor. When she pumped them numerous times, there wasnt any change. She didnt have any brakes. She rear ended my newly purchased vehicle from the same dealership. Police were at the light where she rearended me. They confirmed no brakes, my husband did, the tow truck driver too. When it was received to the body shop on Monday morning the brakes were very soft according to the technician. After sitting for a week, the brakes worked fine. They cant determine why the brakes failed. The dealership was the first call I made at the accident and they told me they know it had legal brakes. Come to find out the brake fluid was black and has an outstanding recall with the abs that had never been taken care of. There is also a recall on certain master cyclinders which were faulty/leaking and the stock numbers. Unfortunately the stock number was removed from the master cylinder. We have a vehicle that never even made it to our home that is now totalled. The dealership is only going to "make it right" with proof that the brakes failed. The police report states such and I have the report from the bodyshop, but after waiting for the insurance to have the test done, they cant confirm loss of brakes. They can only state the fluid being black. We now are having to fight to not lose our trade in value and to not have a reportable accident against my daughter vs a mechanical failure. This is a nightmare both the dealership and the insurance are not making this easy. The most expensive vehicle I ever owned for 30 minutes is all I can say.

Find out hcu hydraulic control unit is failing which is a safety hazard and can result in brakes failing and possible death from loss of control and accident. Thank god this hasn't happened but Ford needs to take responsibility fix this issue with so many others with same problem.

Took the vehicle into Ford to adjust brakes because the felt mushy and pedal traveled to the floor. Ford adjusted the brakes, found a cracked brake line, and bleed the brakes and charged $260. Two weeks later the same problem occurred. Left the car at Ford this time they say a faulty master cylinder which is another $280. Now of course they claim this has nothing to do with the recall for the leaking master cylinder cap.

48 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 09/20/2011

My complaint is about the master cylinder and the rear door latch. I called the Ford dealer and complained about my master cylinder leaking, they told me that recall was already performed on my vehicle in 2012. I wanted to know why would my master cylinder be leaking again two years later? I wonder if this job was ever done. I don't feel that the customer should have to pay for a job that wasn't performed. My other complaint is my rear door latch. I went to the dealer and told them that I was having a problem with my rear door locking and opening. The service department told me I had to pay for this service. Now I see there was a recall on the rear door latch but I was not informed about this recall nor did I receive a recall letter. I want to know how I go about having these services completed.

The smoke cleared and it appeared that the problem had originated in the area of the abs system/master cylinder. The problem was diagnosed by a Ford dealership as a short in the abs module, causing a wiring harness to burn. These two parts are being replaced, and the old parts may be available from the dealership or from the insurance company, pemco.

Brake fluid from the master cylinder leaked on a wiring harness and caused multiple system failures including the abs system, the cruise control, the driver's side air bag, and the display on the radio. The service tech indicated that I was lucky I avoided a fire. This seems very similar to the recall on the Ford f-150s that is causing multiple fires. Per diagnostics for the verification of the airbag lamp, the cause was due to the power fuse of the module/open circuit from abs internal circuit damage.

60 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 07/11/2005

I have a 2002 Ford Escape, manual transmission with 66,000 miles on it. Coming home from a weekend trip the clutch stuck and would have to be pulled up with your foot when having to slow down in traffic. We were able to pull off the road and call for assistance and towing to a garage where we were told that the master cylinder had went out. The mechanic said that this was very unusual for it to happen to a car this new. Have there been any other complaints similar in nature to this?.

65 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 06/10/2002

This car has had various defects in the 8 months that I have owned it. I have had the rear wiper arm and windshield fluid receptacle replaced. Next the brake light came on because the vehicle was leaking brake fluid. This resulted in the replacement of the master cylinder. Next the vehicle lost power at 40 mph right in the middle of traffic not once, but three times. I feel this SUV is not dependable or safe to drive. I am scheduled to take a vacation and drive from wisconsin to arkansas in the August heat, but I am having second thoughts. I would like to get rid of this vehicle. It is an accident waiting to happen.
