39 problems related to engine failure have been reported for the 2006 Ford Expedition. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2006 Ford Expedition based on all problems reported for the 2006 Expedition.

1 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2017

While in traffic, at least 100 times in the last four years (at variable speeds from 5 to 65 mph on city streets and freeways) most recently twice in the last week, the rpms drop below 500 and the vehicle dies and "engine failsafe mode" lights up on the dash. I have to either coast to pull over or dead stop in the middle of the road. I have to turn the vehicle completely off (even though in failsafe mode engine is off, the electronics are still on) and then restart and then it will drive just fine until it happens again. It happens anywhere from once every 6 months to 6 times in 1 week. It seems as though if I drive with both feet in traffic and maintain about 800-1000 rmps at all times it doesn't do this, however this cannot be done all the time especially when trying to stop the large vehicle quickly or turning in an intersection. Nothing has been diagnosed by dealership as no codes are thrown. I also own a obd2 reader and no codes have ever listed unless its time to change the spark plugs. Several different mechanics, forums and brainstorming has not figured it out. I have replaced mostly everything with exception to a new transmission and computer. Mostly everything including wires and vacuum lines and gaskets have been replaced due to maintenance or repairs from everything else that has gone wrong with it. I have put about $10k into new parts for this vehicle. I bought it with 60k miles on it and it now has 117k, its a daily driver with 28 miles of travel 5 days a week. Also the only vehicle that fits all of the children for soccer, track and volleyball traveling tournaments/games. Luckily it doesn't happen very often when I'm not in traffic so the kids aren't usually with me but it is very scary not to know if you are going to stop or if the people behind you are going to hit you or not.

2 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2017

Engine fail safe mode engages at various and unpredictable speeds and at any given time. It has happened numerous times and shows no code afterwards. A very dangerous issue that needs to be addressed by Ford. I have found thousands of complaints about this issue but I can find no indication that Ford has been willing to address the issue. When asked for the date the incident happened I am entering the date of complaint because this has happened multiple times. No codes does not mean the vehicle doesn't have issues. Ford needs to address this issue. . . . Recall and correct the problem.

3 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning light flashed and the vehicle drastically reduced speed and stalled without warning. The contact had to apply force to coast the vehicle off the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

4 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2016

My 2006 Ford Expedition's "engine failsafe mode" initiated and alerted me while I was operating the vehicle, which resulted in the vehicle shutting down completely and losing all power. My main issue/concern with this is that I lost steering and a significant amount of braking power. Fortunately, I was on a side road and was able to safely pull over out of harm's way. The vehicle was able to start a couple of tries later, and I was able to get the vehicle into a service shop safely, which was over an hour away. I cannot help but be grateful for getting home safely, but am very concerned about these vehicles experiencing such issues as they traverse major thoroughfares, especially on a highway traveling around 70mph. This potentially posed very impactful consequences and puts myself, friends/family traveling with me, and other motorists.

5 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

While driving on a highway at 60 mph and on a city street at 40 mph the vehicle without any warning shuts off and goes into engine fail safe mode, the vehicle still has braking and steering and after turning ignition key to off then on it restarts and drives fine. This vehicle has 120,000 miles on it .

6 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2016

While taking my kids to daycare the engine fail safe light came on and the engine shut down. I was sitting at a light waiting to go straight under a bridge and at this particular light only one lane can go straight since the engine shut down and I could not move this caused major backup. Luckily there was an emergency vehicle a few cars behind and he was able to push me through the light and into a parking lot. After a few minutes of sitting there the truck started and I was able to get them to daycare and continue on to work. Very dangerous situation and something should be done.

7 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2015

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning indicator randomly flashed. The vehicle's speed reduced and stalled several times. The vehicle was taken to a manufacturer's master mechanic for further diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was not available.

8 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

First occurrence exhibited flickering dashboard lights before the electrical system went completely dead and the engine quit while accelerating at approximately 20 mph. Put vehicle in neutral and was able to restart engine normally before coming to a stop. Have experienced several short instances of dash flickering over the past couple of weeks with no apparent engine problems. During that same period there have been approximately 4 instances of the electrical system being completely dead upon the initial attempt to start the engine. When this happens, the only light that is illuminated on the dash (or anywhere else for that matter) is what I think is the airbag light; however, normal electrical power has, thus far, re-appeared within 5 minutes and the engine then starts and runs normally. Yesterday the "check engine" light came on and I was able to pull a code of p0119 (engine coolant temperature circuit intermittent) upon returning home. I subsequently cleared the code, but the reader indicates another code is "pending". I believe this is a symptom of a larger problem. I have not experienced a "engine failsafe mode" warning message, but this complaint is very similar to many others already posted and I agree with the related safety concerns and need for a recall.

9 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2015

Driving down highway at 45 mph when engine fail safe mode came on. With no power, had to veer off to a turn lane put in park and restart car. This is the second time this has happened. First was on highway as well around 40 mph, same thing happened; no power had to veer off to the side of the highway, park and restart car. Extremely dangerous to be driving on a busy highway and have Expedition shut off completely.

10 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2015

Was driving about 35 mph when engine fail safe mode came on and truck just shut off. This happened 4 times between location and home. Almost got rearended when it happened.

11 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2014

Engine frequently goes in to engine failsafe mode. This happens typically when the car is being lightly throttled such as around corners or in rush hour traffic. The car restarts fine, but must be completely turned off, which disables airbags, makes power steering and power brakes impossible to use. Previously I have cleaned the throttle body of the car at the suggestion of numerous mechanics, and this resolved the issue for nearly a year. Now the problem is back again. I'm concerned for my wife's safety. The throttle body needs to be redesigned as the throttle plate sticking returning invalid data to the computer sending the engine into failsafe mode.

12 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2014

As I was driving my Expedition, the truck suddenly shut completely off and I had to power steering and then in the message center it showed "engine failsafe mode". I had to put my flashers on and coast to a stop in the lane I was in and come to a complete stop before I could restart my truck. I was unable to switch lanes or move to a safer location because I had no power steering. I had the same thing happen in March of 2009 when I was going 60 on the interstate in the middle lane and lost all power and had to coast to a stop in that lane with my flashers on hoping everyone around me would see I was having car trouble. I had 3 of my kids in the truck with me. In 2009 I took it into the Ford dealership and they said it was the throttle body and replaced it which cost me $536. 00. In 2009 it happened 5 times before it was fixed. I took the truck in today and they said again its the throttle body and because it's been 5 years the other one is no longer under warranty. So now I'm getting a new throttle body put in. I emailed Ford corporate and was basically told that there is no current recall nor plans for one so there's nothing they can do for me!.

13 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2014

SUV entered safe mode . . . Engine shuddered, low power in low rpm bands. . Would not accellerate. Had spark plugs replaced in 2014 at 88000 miles. In 2015, 115,000 miles engine does again while driving interstate putting me at risk on road of collision due to power loss. Did not enter safe mode second time. . . Just could not get power - had to push hard on gas to get it into lower gear/higher rpms. Took to repair shop thinking coils (cop) needed replaced. Told engine is no good and needs full replacement. A wreck could occur when engine fails like this. Engines should not be dead at 115,000 miles. I maintained according to mfg suggested maintenance schedule.

14 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

Vehicle simply shuts off at any time and shows 'engine fail safe mode'. This has happened approximately 15 times since we bought the vehicle (used) in March 2012 (most recently on 10/13). I have researched this online and many other owners have the same complaint. We replaced the tps at a cost of around $300 as a possible fix and this worked for about 6 months - now the problem is back and my research indicates we need to have the throttle body replaced. This will cost us around $500 - for a total repair cost of around $800 - which we cannot afford! Ford has literally $hundreds of millions to take care of this and must recall due to this issue - there is no excuse to allow this dangerous problem to continue. Ford motor CO. Owes me $800 due to their poor engineering and unwillingness to solve this issue - they are greedy crooks.

15 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2013

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the engine fail safe mode light illuminated and the vehicle stopped accelerating. The vehicle was restarted and operated as designed. It was the second time the failure had occurred. The manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 103,000. Mah.

16 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2012

Twice in last week, driving at slow speed and "engine fail safe mode" light comes on. Lost power, braking, and steering. Forced to put car in neutral while car was rolling to restart. Rolled right thru stop sign. Restarted fine, luckily. In second event, almost got hit when turning left across oncoming traffic! started turn and couldn't stop turn due to loss of braking. Fortunately, first time I tried the restart in neutral and it worked, otherwise I would have been hit in second event or hit something since I couldn't steer.

17 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving 75 mph. The warning light started to illuminate and showed that the engine fail safe mode had engaged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who previously ran a diagnostic test but could not find a failure. The contact was able to secure an appointment to have the dealer further inspect the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified and a complaint was filed. There were no recalls for the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000. Kmj.

18 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2012

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact was traveling 55 mph when the engine fail safe mode warning light illuminated, causing the vehicle to loose power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The VIN was not available. The failure and the current mileages were 113,000. Kmj.

19 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2012

While traveling on the highway at approximately 75 mph in a 2006 Ford Expedition, the vehicle's engine suddenly and without warning shut down. Due to the loss of power, the steering and brakes were extremely difficult to control. The vehicle coasted on the highway until I was safely able to direct the vehicle to the side of the roadway. After stopping and parking the vehicle safely, I was able to restart the vehicle without further incident. This occured a total of three times in months that followed. I took the vehicle to a Ford dealership and they could not find a problem with the vehicle. After researching the incident online, I learned that the throttle control switch may have been the cause of the problem. I notified the dealership of my research and they did not agree. I replaced the switch on my own and I have not encountered any additional engine failures since.

20 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2012

Engine shuts off while driving and shows 'engine fail safe mode'. This has happened 6 times since I bought the vehicle in March 2012 (I've had the vehicle a little over a year now). It has happened in 1) a restaurant parking lot while on vacation; 2) in a parking garage at work; 3) in a store parking lot; 4) in a store parking lot; 5) on a road; 6) in a store parking lot. (#5/#6 just happened yesterday to my wife while shopping with our 3yr. Old son). This is a serious safety issue because it can happen any time, anywhere, without warning. I have contacted Ford and of course they say they are not aware of the problem - even though I have found hundreds of complaints on various online forums and right here on the NHTSA website. It seems (from my research online) that the problem can be fixed by replacing the throttle body and tps - which is a costly repair for which I do not have the money (after just buying new tires in addition to a separate $500 repair). Ford needs to recall and fix this issue before someone is injured or killed!!.

21 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2012

This is the 1st complaint on this issue. While driving down the road, the engine fail safe mode engages, the engine loses power, for no apparent reason. You pull over if you can. Put the vehicle in park. Turn everything off. Shut off engine. Restart and if you are lucky, put it in drive and continue on. This is very dangerous, if someone is tailgating you and this happens, they could rear end your vehicle and people could have a major accident and die. This has happened 4 times now. There's are hundreds of complaints on this issue online. Thank you.

22 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2012

Engine fail safe mode resulting in complete shutdown while going at highway speed. Vehicle losses all power and has to be restarted.

23 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph on the highway, the vehicle unexpectedly stalled. An engine fail safe light also began to illuminate on the instrument panel. Both the dealer and manufacturer were notified, but denied any assistance with repairs of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileages were 86,000.

24 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving between 45 to 50 mph, the vehicle stalled and the engine fail safe light illuminated. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder where the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the throttle body was not opening and closing correctly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 75,000.

25 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2011

A warning light "engine fail safe" flashed and the engine stalled. I was fortunate there was a parking lot I could force the vehicle into, as I was in morning rush hour traffic in houston TX, and was almost rear ended. Apparently this is a very common problem among the 2006 Ford Expedition, I have done some research on-line and viewed many complaints about this same thing. I checked with one auto shop, which says the throttle body needs to be replaced at a cost of $800. 00, the Ford dealer/service dept quoted 686. 85. They both told me they each have another 2006 Expedition in their shop at this time for the same repair, and have had several repairs for this same issue. I believe this is a very dangerous defect with an engine shutting down with only a half second notice. I am glad I was not on the freeway (in houston!) doing 60 mph. My vehicle has a little over 38,000 miles on it.

26 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact was driving 20 mph the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the check engine fail safe light. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 168,000.

27 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2011

The vehicle enters engine fail safe mode. At this point, the vehicle will shut off and you will lose engine power and steering capabilities. This is particularly dangerous when driving 70 miles per hour on the highway. It will eventually kill someone if it has not already. Ford has dropped the ball on this one. The repair is a $600 - $800 throttle body assembly. Ford should be eating this cost.

28 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2011

I was preparing to make a left hand turn into a busy office complex, and the engine in my 2006 Ford Expedition cut off. The system generated code was 'engine failsafe mode". I turned on my hazards, put the car in park and waited a few minutes to restart. The engine car started, but the fact that it cut off, without warning is extremely alarming. I've contacted Ford corporate who said that there were no recalls, and that I needed to go to a service center. After researching the internet and this site, I am convinced that this issue should prompt a recall, but Ford's cost-benefit analysis indicates that it is waiting until there are enough fatalities to make the determination to fix what appears to be a $600-800 issue. Ford should be and can be held liable for gross negligence in their deliberate decision to disregard the engine failure complaints. I have been a loyal Ford customer for several decades. That is no longer the case.

29 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

2006 Ford Expedition on 2/2/11 while I was driving on freeway the vehicle goes into "engine fail safe mode. " not knowing what this meant I was going to proceed to exit up ahead which was an exit up a hill. When I stepped on the gas I realized the engine was off. I was able to move slightly to the left to stop on the shoulder at the bottom of the exit. This is very dangerous and Ford needs to make a recall before a life is lost!.

30 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning light illuminated, causing the vehicle to stall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The current mileage was 46,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 39,000.

31 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

With no warning, my 2006 Ford Expedition will lose all power while driving. The light on the control panel comes on saying "engine fail safe mode. " after coasting to the side of the road, I restart the car and all is fine. I have taken it to two mechanics and they say there is nothing wrong with the car. It has happened twice so far.

32 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2010

My family (me, wife and two children) were on our way home from a restaurant. We normally take the highway but decided to take the side road home and thank god. Driving 45 mph the "engine fail safe mode" came on and it completely shut off. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and it started fine and no warning signs. This is the first time it occurred but I do not want this to happen again. The vehicle is inside the garage and I'm calling the dealership tomorrow to make an appointment. This is a family car and we are always on the highway. This is a fatal fail that needs to be corrected. This failure occurred at 61,408 miles. I checked the Ford website and there is no recall. However, there are numerous complaints on the internet for the same issue. I'm afraid for my wife and children while they are operating this vehicle.

33 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine fail safe mode activated without warning while the vehicle was being driven, causing the vehicle to stall. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times and they had not been able to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 77,000.

34 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. While driving in a parking lot at about 15mph, the vehicle just shut off. A light on the instrument panel indicated that the vehicle was in " engine fail safe mode". The contact put her hazard lights on, put the vehicle in park and turned the engine off. She restarted the vehicle and it operated normally. The contact stated that this has happened about 6-7 times. She reported the failure to the manufacturer and they stated that they never heard of anything like this. The driver does not feel her vehicle is safe. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage is 52,691.

35 Engine Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2009

Engine failure of 2006 Ford Expedition. Dealership explained the engine had a bent injector rod . Advised new engine was necessary. Cost estimate $4000-$7000.
