2 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

When driving during normal dry weather the traction control randomly comes on when it shouldn't and has caused the brakes to fail and the vehicle not stopping when the brakes are pressed. I have have owned the vehicle only 7 weeks and have had this issue with the brakes occur on 3 occasions. Luckily, 2 of the times I was in a rural area but the 3rd time I was on a busy city street and ran through a red light narrowly missing having an accident. Each time this has occurred my speed was below 45mph. I did some research on this issue and found several blogs online of people with the same problem. In these blogs the individuals stated that the Ford dealer was unable to identify or duplicate the problem in each blog that I found with this problem. Many of these blogs were several years old so I called my local Ford service manager who indicated he knew nothing of this problem and it would be difficult to diagnose since the traction control does not retain faults. My local service manager gave me a number to Ford who I called and described the issue. The person I spoke with could not find anything regarding this issue and could only advise me to take it to a Ford service location to check out. In the blogs I did read where one individual was told by his/her Ford service center that a Ford engineer would be coming to assess the problem. This is a serious issue. As I stated, I have owned the vehicle 7 weeks and had the traction control to cause the brakes to fail on 3 occasions. The date below of 8/24/2020 is the date of the 3rd occasions.

3 Brakes Failed problem of the 2018 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

Today I experienced a complete failure of the brakes on my 2018 Ford Expedition el. The brake pedal would not build any pressure which almost caused an accident with my children in the vehicle. To answer the specifics requested by NHTSA, the vehicle was being driven at 45mph or less on a city street and the problem still persisted when the vehicle was stopped. The only way to build brake pressure was to turn the vehicle off and pump the pedal. This vehicle is less than 6 months old and for how much Ford charges for a limited edition Expedition you expect to not have your brakes fail. This is unacceptable, Ford! thank god nobody was killed by this manufacturing flaw.

4 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/27/2018

Approximately 21000 miles, sudden and complete brake failure while driving the vehicle. A warning message was displayed on the dash "low brake fluid". I touched the brake pedal and it depressed completely to the floor. I inspected the vehicle, no visible leaks at any of the wheels or in the engine bay. Brake fluid reservoir was empty. Refilled reservoir only to watch it drain with no visible leaks (into the booster?).

5 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Brake failure. 2016 Expedition ecoboost, car notification of 'low brake fluid'. Even after adding brake fluid purchased from Ford dealer; the fluid keeps decreasing all without any visible leakage around car and/or tires/etc. Eventually and quickly you will quickly get zero brake response; the brake pedal will go to bottom of floor and in my case; there was white clouds coming out of our exhaust. Zero braking ability. We had our vehicle parked on a flat parking lot and after checking the fluid, after filling it up; turned car on; had emergency parking brake enabled and then putting it in drive; just to test brakes; the car rolled but zero ability to brake, thus reapplied parking brake to control vehicle to a stop. All while engine appears to sound ok; with an occasional 'stutter' while white smoke comes from the tailpipe.

7 Brakes Failed problem of the 2013 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

Parking brake failed to hold the vehicle at 1500 rpm which is required in massachusetts to pass state inspection. It does not perform to specifications. Vehicle was about 2 yrs old with 9500 miles. Dealer had to remove and clean parking brakes parts and reassemble. I had the exact same issue with 2000 Expedition every year the parking brake would fail state inspection and had to be repaired. I consider this a safety issue and design flaw if the parking brakes chronically under perform on these Ford vehicles.

9 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

The hydralic controller went out after getting the brakes repaired by the dealer. Their was no warning that the pump had gone out. This allowed the brakes to fail making the car a hazard on the road. I was informed by the Ford service technician there was not a warning light of failure, way to check it, and the part was not suppose to fail. This causing a extremely dangerous situation when it goes out. I have got the old part which cost over $1000. 00.

While driving at 40 mph engine stopped working making brakes and steering fail. Limped off busy road luckily! engine light showed electronic throttle failure. Now check engine light is on. Going to dealers for repair today-since this is an obvious problem for Ford why haven't they addressed it! could be deadly if fails in heavy traffic conditions.

11 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

I own a 2000 my Ford Expedition XLT. On July 4, 2010, I was leaving my house and driving down the street towards an intersection when I applied the brakes. Upon placement of my foot on the brake pedal, virtually all braking power was lost forcing me to quickly apply the emergency brake to avoid crossing an intersection. I then turned the vehicle around and drove back to my house and parked it until it could be towed. On July 6, 2010, the vehicle was towed to the local Ford dealership. Later that same day the Ford mechanic contacted me and said that the main supply line for the rear brakes had rusted causing a loss of brake fluid. Once the failure originally occurred, it did not correct itself until Ford replaced the brake system supply line. The brake failure was catastrophic in that it caused a near loss of all braking capacity. Had a vehicle been in the intersection or had I failed to rapidly engage the emergency brake, the incident would certainly have resulted in an accident in which property damage and or the loss of life could have occurred. Specifically, I was very fortunate not to have been involved in an accident. The Ford dealership did show me the removed section of brake supply line. It was heavily rusted in two sections, although I am uncertain which section was actually responsible for the brake failure. It is possible that the Ford dealer still has possession of the failed brake fluid supply line.

12 Brakes Failed problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 09/17/2009

I had just picked up my son from his school and made a left turn at the stop sign to go to the main road to pick my daughter from her school when the brakes failed in my truck. The red was ahead, cars were lined, kids were crossing the road, and I had to something really fast. I drove in to a driveway in my right which was a parking for a hospital. I kept trying to push the brake pedal to stop the car,but the wouldn't stop. It went over the curb and hit a tree. I called the police, then my insurance, car was towed to the body shop. The Ford store did the diagnostics on the brake and told my insurance company that the brake booster had failed. My insurance company got the work started for the body damage. I called the Ford store several times asking for a copy of the diagnostic and the person in charge would not return my call or give me a copy. Three weeks later when body started they sent a report to the body shop that the cause of the accident, was undetermined sent this report after he spoke to the office of the general counsel of Ford. The accident occurred at 3:15 on sept. 17th and my car went through a 60,000 mile check up on sept. 16th. At the Ford store.

16 Brakes Failed problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/25/2006

Last Thursday my brakes failed due to a rupture in the hydraulic fluid steel tubing. The vehicle is a heavy SUV, and being an active sailor, I use the vehicle to tow boat trailers. We had just hooked up a loaded boat trailer, and as I got back into the car, I noted that the brake pedal went to the floor. We proceeded about 300 yards on a level side road and tested the brakes with the same result. We noted a lot of brake fluid under the car. We had the vehicle towed to newport Ford in middletown, rhode island. They showed me the rupture site, and the rust over the entire system of steel tubing. They indicated that they would have to replace the entire tubing to all four (4)wheels, for a cost of over $700. They also indicated to me that this type of failure is quite common. The dealership handles about 2-3 incidents per month. I asked why the tubing was not copper, and they indicated that many american car manufacturers have switched from copper to steel. We were very fortunate that the failure occurred at the beginning of the trip, for if it had happen going down a major hill in the center of newport, there could have been grave consequences. I have two comments. One is that if this failure is as common as I was told, I would hope there would be a major policy change and a recall. Cars often recalled, for rather minor issues, and I think this is much more serious.

17 Brakes Failed problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/14/2006

Brakes have failed to work properly on several occasions. Three (3) times when I backed up out of my driveway. . . Brakes completely failed. . . I almost hit the trees across street in my neighbor's yard. I pumped the brakes vigorously when I realized they weren't working. Don't know how I escaped an accident. It happened again when I tried to back up one night when I was away from home in north carolina. I realized the truck was not going to stop - so I threw the gear shift up into forward drive. . . Barely escaped hitting a gas meter on a house. . This would have been a horrible accident. There were 5 people in the truck and 2 people in the bedroom of the house I almost hit. This brake failure on the 2004 Expedition is a really bad problem. You drive the truck at your own risk. It is an accident - just waiting to happen again. Dealer in north carolina had no clue as to what was happening. The local dealer has no clue. . . . They only say if it reoccurs while the truck is in their possesion, they might be able to discover what is happening. Is this a potentially dangerous vehicle? what does Ford moter company say about it??? does anyone know?.

While driving my 2004 Ford Expedition at ~65 mph the car in front of me slowed abruptly. Upon pressing the brake pedal, the pedal fell to the floor and the brakes failed to slow the vehicle. I swerved to avoid hitting other vehicle. I removed my foot from the brake and then pressed the brake again and the brake began to operate normally once again. Car currently at the dealer although cause has not been found. 1 week prior I had the brakes inspected due a concern where the brake pedal would slowly fall to floor while adding and removing pressure from the pedal (without completely removing pressure) in 5-10 mph downhill stop and go traffic. Dealer had told me that the entire brake system had been inspected and that the brakes were fine.
