2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/11/2014

Vehicle had a sudden unintended acceleration event which nearly resulted in an accident. This was a very nerve racking experience and I had difficulty stopping the vehicle (despite applying full brakes) as the rpm continued to increase to approx. 5000. On stopping the vehicle I managed to place it in neutral and the engine continued to rev excessively. I turned off the engine. Vehicle was brought to local Ford dealership who confirmed a high rev problem with the electronic throttle control and recommended a "throttle body" replacement.

7 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1997 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

On 03/05/2012, my Ford Expedition exemplified sudden acceleration upon ignition. The truck started and, immediately, accelerated with extreme rpm. The transmission was in the parked gear but the truck gunned forward explosively. The incident occurred in the parking lot of my job at the end of my shift. The truck rocketed forward about 60 feet then collided with a brick, six feet high retaining wall. The front bumper of the Expedition was about four feet from a ground-level power transformer. The retaining wall was designed to prevent damage to the transformer. I've suffered neck and back injuries and was hospitalized. The truck sustained significant front end and under carriage damage.

13 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/21/2006

I backed out of a parking space and had my foot on the brake as I shifted out of reverse and into neutral. As soon as I shifted into drive the engine accelerated with great force. I kept my foot on the brake pedal and shifted back into neutral and turned of the ignition stopping the vehicle and avoiding an accident. I measured the resulting tire skid mark from the left rear tire and it was about 9 feet long. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealer on January 23, 2006 for a diagnostic checkup. They kept it overnight and tried to duplicate the unintended acceleration and to check out any possible mechanical defects. None were found and the vehicle was returned with a suggestion to have a vehicle data recorder installed when one was available.

15 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2005 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

Vehicle was being driven in a parking lot. We stopped to allow a car to pull out of the parking space. My wife plowed into the brakes as the vehicle came close to running over pedestrians walking by. Dealer checked and found nothing wrong. This is one of two incidents in a 3 month period. This vehicle is a major catastrophe waiting to happen, please beware of the danger.

16 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 03/29/2004

I own a 2001 Ford Expedition. In the years since I have had it I have experienced sudden acceleration numerous times. I have been fortunate in that when the sudden accelaration happens I have been at a stand still at a traffic light or heavy traffic and therefor already stepping on the brakes. The engine will rev up all of a sudden, it has caught me off guard a couple of times because it does not happen often but when it does you can of course hear it, feel the vehicle reving up and see the needles on the meters go all the way to the other end. The times that it did catch me off guard the truck jumped forward in the second it took me to apply the brakes. It has not caused any crash or injuries but I watched a report on nbc channel 2 news in houston and felt I should probably report this in case this is happening to more people with this type of vehicle it could be a serious problem.

17 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/04/2003

We purchased our 2002 5. 4l Expedition on October 13,2001. On approximately 5 occasions, we have been at a stop with the brake pedal depressed. The engine suddenly accelerated, causing the vehicle to lurch forward requiring you to apply additional pressure to the brake pedal to avoid collision or further unwanted movement of the vehicle. It is very stressful to drive, thinking that it will happen again. We have brought this problem to the attention of our dealer several times. They cannot detect the problem and indicated that there were no similar complaints on file. The last incident occurred on on Dec. 4, 2003. After contacting the customer service department at Ford motor company, we requested that the dealer install a flight recorder. I we fear for the safety of ourselves, of our children, and of others. To further aggravate the situation, service staff from our Ford dealer have suggested that it is driver error (suggesting that we are applying pressure to the brake and gas pedal simultaneously. We are certain this is not the case). Please let us know of your findings and any additional steps to take. Thank you.

18 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000. Updated 04/06/lj the consumer stated the sudden acceleration happened several times. 04/16/12.

20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/24/2001

While stopped at a stop light behind other vehicles, my vehicle suddenly accelerated pushing me into the vehicle in front of mine. Applying full pressure with both feet on the brake pedal, my vehicle continued to lurch forward into the vehicle in front of me and pushing it into another vehicle. I had to put my car into park and shut off the engine to get it to stop lurching forward. It must have lurched forward 3 or 4 times into the truck in front of me after making initial hit. We've noticed where the idle would increase in the past but nothing that seemed to be dangerous in any way. We had a 98 expidition that would increase in rpm's and lurch forward and had to take it to the dealer for repair. That driver in the truck in front of me complained of neck problems and had to be taken in an ambulance.

22 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/05/2001

I own a 2001 Ford Expedition 5. 4l and on at least ten different occasions the vehicle has suddenly accelerated. Luckily, every time this has occured the vehicle was at a full stop and my foot was on the brake pedal. The vehicle would surge forward and the tachometer would jump to about 3500 to 4000 rpm. The surge only lasts for a few seconds, but it is enough to lunge the vehicle forward. After the second or third incodent we took it back to the dealership where we bought it (dub miller Ford in rosenberg TX. ) and they said they could not find anything wrong. I don't know what is wrong with this truck, but I would like to get it fixed before my wife or child are injured, this is my wife's primary vehicle and most of the incidents have happened to her.

Upon re-positioning my vehicle in a driveway, I backed up then attempted to proceeded forward. At this point my SUV suddenly accelerated while my foot was on the brake. 26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1999 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 02/12/2000

Backed into a light pole in a parkinglot. Engine started to "rev" while still in reverse. With my foot still on the brake, I shifted from reverse to drive. At that time, the car accelerated forward at a high rate of speed, hitting a car and going through a storefront wall. I had my foot on the brake the entire time (pictures show the tire marks the entire way). Wheels continued to accelerate after car was stopped by debri, burning holes in the carpet of the store. Hard to say what the cause was at this time. Lawyer refers to it as "sudden acceleration syndrome" but this was related to hitting the pole.

27 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

31 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1998 Ford Expedition

I have experienced an uncontrolled acceleration when braking to come to a stop with my 1998 Ford Expedition. This has happened 10 times since I purchased the vehicle in September, 1998. The first occurence was on 9/19/1998 and the latest occurrence was 3/01/1999. Intermittently, when pressing on the brake to come to a stop the engine accelerates as if I were pressing on the gas pedal rather than the brake. The degrees of the engine acceleration have varied from somewhat mild to extremely violent. The only way to stop the vehicle is to put the transmission into neutral since the acceleration still pulls the vehicle forward even with my foot on the brake (standing on the brake). This uncontrolled acceleration has always occurred when the vehicle is moving at a very slow speed in the braking process to come to a full stop. Luckily there have not been pedestrians or other automobiles in front of me when this has happened. I have had the vehicle back to the dealership several times concerning this problem. The dealership and Ford have not provided a fix for the problem as of this date. This is an extremely dangerous defect in the vehicle and is a potential killer. All 10 occurrences of the problem happened with less than 4,000 miles on the vehicle.

32 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

While the vehicle was parked and running it suddenly accelerated, causing it to collide with another vehicle. It was taken to the dealer for inspection, and problem was not resolved.
