I was driving my 2012 Expedition and suddenly the vehicle went from doing 60 to 40 immediately the tires squealed and threw me into the right lane . This vehicle transmission has a recall for down shifting and power train issues. My VIN number does not fit the recall but my vehicle has all the symptoms of multiple recalls and is not safe to drive . Had I not known how to drive I and my daughter would be in the hospital due to the faulty transmission lead frame and power train . I contacted Ford head quarters they were no help even though there is clearly a recall . I also took the truck to Ford of valparaiso and had to pay the 1,000 dollars for the lead frame to be replaced which was in the recall and I shouldn't have had to pay anything . . Them replacing the lead frame did nothing the car is still not drive able and is extremely unsafe its my only vehicle and I am a single mother of 2 kids .

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 40 mph and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle went into limp mode and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway and turned off the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 55,000.

I originally leased and have since purchased this vehicle. Since owning the vehicle, it sometimes has a harsh shift between gears. It is so harsh that I have mentioned it to at least two different Ford dealerships during the transmission warranry period. No remedy was provided at the time. The car has continued to have shifting issues and now the car will pop out of gear while driving, which is a major safety issue. We informed a Ford dealership about this experience and they are now telling us we need a new transmission as they found metal in the transmission fluid. The transmission warranty just expired and there is a NHTSA bulletin about this very issue and there is an open recall on the power module for this car. Items for review: technical service bulletin 10r80 active recall campaign 24e13 documented issue at tom masano Ford on 12/02/2021 documented issue at fred beans exton Ford on 4/26/2022 documented issue at tom masano on 8/5/2025.

I just purchased (2 months ago) a 2012 Ford Expedition el 5. 4l v8 from a private party. I wish I would have done more research as I am already experiencing transmission issues that I believe are directly related to the vehicles lead frame recall. It threw a p0742 code on me torque converter clutch circuit stuck on and decided that it would only drive in limp mode unless I cleared the code, pulled over, cycles the key, and restarted the vehicle. Even as dangerous as this unexpected shifting into 1st gear at highway speeds is, it is equally as dangerous to be getting out of your vehicle in moving traffic due to Ford's terrible design on this vehicles power train/transmission system. I have scheduled an appointment with the local Ford dealer and al certain I'll get the runaround/blame game for this one. 150k miles and as I said, I have owned it for 2 months and have already had transmission issues, brake issues, belt tensioner pulley literally fell off. . And from what I read, what's next??? the cam phasers?? that's if the transmission issue is even fixed and it becomes safely drive able again. Come on Ford, get your act together, you're better than this!.
July 2025 my 2012 Ford Expedition threw a p0742 code for a stuck torque converter clutch. The vehicle had just under 150k miles and started to jerk in and out of gear and the wrench light illuminated so I, thankfully was going approximately 45 mph when it happened and was able to pull the vehicle over as it was in limp mode. When I cleared the dtc code the problem went away temporarily but eventually locked back up again within a mile from my home. Unfortunately, Ford dealerships will not stand behind the customer service number that they have listed for a replacement of the transmission lead frame. I provided the local dealership with all of the necessary information as well as an independent diagnosis by a transmission specialist. Looks like I'll just have to wait for the day that it causes a massive accident by downshifting into 1st gear at 65mph. Terrible customer service and I can only hope this doesn't cost someone their life.
I took the car for a recall due obd issues and reprogramming shortly after that 3 days after it was at redrock Ford in williston north dakota is giving me emergency brake malfunction in middle of driving car on cruise control this warning came on with a lightning symbol in red and circle around it disengaging cruise control on its own and also no showing speed cruise control is set for this is the 3rd time I take this car due to recalls they also just did seatbelt tensioners on front driver and passenger sides and is listed again for it and status on it is that no remedy is available due to parts not available I called the dealer after the obd recall repair and associate is stating I have to pay a diagnostic because is not related to emergency brake issues mentioned above I didn’t have this ebrake issue before u til oil took it to them now thanks to this I have a broken front right passenger wheel bearing most likely it engage abs systems and my wheel locked while driving with my family and my kids now I have to buy a new driver side wheel bearing most likely have a mechanic installed also with a price of labor cost on top.

When driving at highway speeds with speed control on the car will on its own slow down to 55 or 45 for no apparent reason and will not pick up the highway speed until the next sped limit sign is passed. More concerning is running at speed control set of 55mph on [xxx] the car speeds up when passing a state highway 70 sign the car . . . On its own . . . Speeds up to 70mph. This happened numerous times between eagle river, WI and woodruff, WI. When slowing down thru a town the speed control slowed down on its own to 45 then 35 and as we left town the speed control on its own speed up tp 45 , then we passed another wisconsin highway #70 sign the car speed up to 70 until 50 feet later we passed a 55mph speed sign and the car slowed to 55. Very concerning and the Ford dealer in eagle river asked if we were on [xxx] ? I answered yes and he acted like he has heard that complaint before, and that there was no known fix to the issue. In our travels we stopped at a Ford dealer in hazelwood, mo. And the service writer said he had never had heard of the issue. Any help with this ongoing issue would be helpful. We are driving cross country. Three times the adaptive cruise control has accelerated and showed a new speed going as much as from 74 mph to 107 the third time. The second it went 75 to 88. I can’t remember the first but I know we had a sudden acceleration and quickly disengaged as we did all three sessions. Now we are finishing our trip to our summer home in maryland without engaging because we don’t trust the system.
For 1. 5+ years, the transmission will unexpectedly and suddenly downshift into 1st gear without warning. Which causes a sudden deceleration. No warning lights before it happens. It occurs randomly and at different speeds. It has happened over 20 times. I've experienced it happening at speed ranging from 35mph to 65mph. The gear shifter was in the drive position each time this issue occurred. The SUV is the 2017 Ford Expedition el with the 3. 5l ecoboost engine with 6 speed automatic transmission. No check engine light before or after the issue (so no obd2 code to read) a big yellow warning appears during/after saying "see manual". Sometimes the issue will resolve in a few seconds. The SUV has not been to the dealership yet for this issue. But I will be contacting Ford today.

Component/system that failed: the 10r80 automatic transmission is malfunctioning. It causes harsh shifting, delayed acceleration, hesitation, and unpredictable surging. These issues have been confirmed as part of Ford’s internal TSB 23-2250, which directly references this transmission defect. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk: this transmission failure poses a serious safety risk. The hesitation and delay in acceleration occur during merging, turning, and highway driving, which can cause near misses and sudden loss of power. The delayed response time compromises my ability to move safely through traffic. Reproduced/confirmed: yes. The issue was confirmed by liberty Ford in fayetteville, nc, after I paid for a diagnostic. The service department acknowledged the symptoms but refused to cover the diagnosis or repair under warranty since no recall was showing under my VIN. Inspected by others: the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer directly or by law enforcement or insurance. However, it was diagnosed and documented by an authorized Ford dealership (liberty Ford in fayetteville nc). Warning lamps or symptoms: there were no warning lamps or error codes. The symptoms began subtly but became consistent over time. The first noticeable event was approximately in “early 2025”, with increased severity since then. I submitted a written complaint to Ford on June 9, 2025, via usps priority mail (tracking #[xxx]) and also filed a certified safety complaint with NHTSA (tracking #[xxx]) but have received no response. I am requesting formal investigation and recall action. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

While using the adaptive cruise control, the speed of the vehicle rapids accelerates. If set to any speed less than 50, the vehicle speeds up to 56mph. If set to any speed greater than 56 but less than 86 mph, the speed of the vehicle accelerates to 86 mph. I have tested this issue over and over. I haven't talked to the dealership yet, but plan to today. Very scary to have the vehicle accelerate for no reason and for no driver input. The acceleration is fairly abrupt. The speed does not decline only speeds up.
Driving vehicle on road and car lost all acceleration power. The check engine light appeared and the problem was diagnosed as a faulty throttle body. This exact same issue has been identified as a recall item with an extended warranty (ten years or 150,000 miles) on other Ford vehicles but for some unknown reason the 2017 Expedition is not covered. This is a very serious safety issue. . . I did speak to Ford and they offered no assistance.
2/13/19- Ford issued recall on 2013 Ford Expedition for oss failure and downshift 2/20/19- I go to the preston Ford Mazda dealership, maryland. I view and test drive a 2013 Ford Expedition, during the test drive the rpms ran high on the Expedition and it felt sluggish and “off” crossing a road, and at one point it jumped, and the wrench symbol came on as we were returning. My concern was shrugged off by my salesman, as he said ‘maybe Fords are just like that’. As we returned, and had the issue with the wrench symbol, salesman advised me “ well when you came and interrupted as they were just getting this thing checked out and tested. ” 2/19/19 when I returned following days to purchase, the vehicle was not ready. It turned out the battery had died and they had some other issue with a “computer code”. They put in another battery on hand, and told me I should now be “good to go”, knowing that I was in desperate need of a vehicle, and would likely be trusting if they told me it was now repaired. At this point we were within manufacturer’s warranty, and under 60k miles. -was never informed that there was a recall issued by Ford that exactly applied to our vehicle, and to the issue I reported during my test drive, under warranty, and preston Ford Mazda never correctly repaired the issue as they stated, which was reported within all Ford and recall time and mileage requirements. [xxx]-while driving suddenly speedometer went out, the gas gauge stopped working, and then, a moment later while trying to figure that out, the vehicle jumped and shuddered/stopped and the rpms went wild, revving. Almost hit cars, but was able to pull to the side of highway. Upon turning the vehicle off and restarting, normal operation resumed, but issue with the wrench symbol, gauges, rpms revving and vehicle jump/stop has now happened repeatedly, leaving me with no safe transportation for my large family. Several incidents in which adaptive cruise control resets itself to 90mph when moving into a higher speed limit area- for example, cruising along at 70mph, pass a speed limit sign allowing 75mph, and suddenly the cruise control resets at 90mph. If you are not very consciously thinking about this you quickly find yourself going 90mph. It never resets at 80 or 85- always 90mph. Going 15 or 20 mph faster than thought or planned certainly grabs your attention and is a safety risk.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated the transmission was slipping while driving at an undisclosed speed. The contact stated that on one occasion, while her daughter was driving 60 mph, the transmission started slipping and the vehicle failed to accelerate above 60 mph. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to TSB: 23-2120. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be test-driven. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
I can be driving up a hill the traction control warning light and hill decent braking light come on causing the vehicle speed to drop the vehicle shakes acting like it is trying to stop. Once you stop and turn the vehicle off the error codes go away . This problem has been occurring since early September it currently only occurs going up hill on one road.
The contact rented a 2024 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph with the adaptive cruise control activated, upon passing a speed limit sign the vehicle independently accelerated to 80 mph. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer nor an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The rental agency was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 24,000.
Service engine light illuminated indicating different occurrences. The vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership for repair since it's under factory warranty. The service representative, after taking control of the vehicle, he wrote the following in the repair work order: "when brandon went to park the vehicle, vehicle did not want to go, barely pressed the throttle pedal and it took off like it was floored, foot was off the pedal and it was accelerating in the lot, put vehicle in neutral and applied brakes - see line 2" line two (2) in the work order states the following: "customer states the service engine light is still on it shows two different occurrences and reasons in oasis - customer stated wrench light on and no power verified concern checked for dtcs found p2aba in pcm checked for TSB ssm fsa found TSB 23-2353 reprogrammed pcm oer TSB road tested all okay at this time" clearly a vehicle with an unexplained acceleration issue poses a real safety issue.

At highway speeds, the car shakes/vibrates. It's scary. Took vehicle to Ford service. They identified the problem, acknowledged that it exists and was unable to fix it. Now, I'm stuck with this car that shakes and seems unsafe as it shakes. Additionally, was told by the Ford dealer that other Ford Expeditions have come in with the same problem and have been unable to remedy. Even with a case open with the Ford engineers, they were unable to fix. Ford motor company has been contacted about the issue along with the executive offices of Ford and the ceo.
On [xxx] my 2024 Ford Expedition had a malfunction that could have had serious consequences. This was the second time that this malfunction had occurred. On both occasions, I was parked in my driveway. When I started the 2024 Ford Expedition and put it in gear, before touching the gas, the throttle immediately went to full speed and the vehicle took off. On both occasions, I used extreme brake pressure to keep the vehicle from launching across my driveway while I reached for the "start/off" button. With the brakes heavily applied, the front tires were skidded 4-5 feet in the gravel. I re-started the Expedition and, with the gearshift in "park", the engine again raced to full rpm. I immediately hit the "start/off" button. For a third time, I pressed "start" and, again, the engine roared to full rpm. I hit the "start/off" button. A fourth time the engine started at normal rpm. The gas pedal was never touched, only the brake pedal. The dealership picked up the 2024 Ford Expedition on November 11, 2024 and has the vehicle to this day - January 1, 2024. The dealer has attempted multiple times to replicate the incident to no success. They advised me that there are no service bulletins nor diagnostics in the vehicle to explain the two events. There are eyewitnesses to attest to what happened. The Expedition has 3,100 miles. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6.
On three separate occasions, the car started accelerating by itself while speed control was engaged. Once I noticed, I stepped on the brakes and the speed control was disengaged before any accidents happened.
On three separate occasions, my vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The first time I was attempting to pass slow moving farm equipment when my vehicle lost power, had a loud vibrating/rattling noise and multiple dashboard warnings flashed. Luckily, I was able to merge back into my lane and pull off the side of the road. I took the vehicle in for service and was told I needed new phasers. Once I got my vehicle back, I was still experiencing issues. Fortunately, the next two times my vehicle lost power I was driving at low speeds. I did have my kids with me on one occasion and it scared them quite a bit. I am not sure what the loud noise is but they stopped riding with me after that. Thank goodness I was not driving my family on the highway when experiencing a power failure. My vehicle is back at a dealership waiting for a new transmission.
On multiple occasions, our car has lurched out of gear going at fast speeds on the highway. It slips out of gear and the car shakes and then it lunges back into gear. On a few occasions, the gas pedal was also inoperable while the car was "finding the right gear". This has been extremely scary for my family when this has happened. The first time we took it to the dealership and they reprogrammed the transmission. Then, it happened again about 6 weeks after the fix, and this time the transmission valve had to be replaced.
Transmission unable to shift out of park periodically, transmission downshifting at highway speeds and engine shutting down. Speedometer and rpm guage going crazy then no longer working.
Cruise control deactivation switch. I was getting in my truck on my way to work in the early morning. As I walked by the hood I could smell what seemed like burning wire, so I opened the hood & right as I got it all the way up flames started shooting up. I put the fire out and had to wait to call my mechanic he came and told me it was definitely the deactivation switch that had caught fire.

Back up computer screen not working every time vehicle is put in reverse. Talked with service manager -about 6months ago told if unit does not malfunction when being tested cannot check problem. But if I would leave car for a day they would try at verious times to see it not working. No warning only screen telling us back up screen not working or screen goes to blue screen with nothing on it.
In 2022, around mileage of 67000, our SUV was climbing a steep road when it suddenly made a pop sound & went into limp mode with the wrench light showing and the engine sounding rough. It felt like no fuel was getting to the engine & the gas pedal was non-responsive. The rpms didn't change when the gas pedal was pressed. The grade was so steep, we barely made it to the side of the road without rolling backwards into traffic behind us. After turning the engine off and sitting about 10 mins, we tried starting the engine again. The car seemed to have reset itself! it ran fine; the wrench light turned off, and the gas pedal was responsive again. (at the time, we were on vacation at the coast and had traveled from our home at about elevation 3500'. We had also recently had to buy gas from a small no name gas station, so we feared we may have gotten bad fuel). From there, we returned home without re-occurrence, and we used fuel cleaning additive to our chevron fuel for the next 2 fill ups. Then, approximately 600 miles later on a flat grade, it happened again without the pop sound. We immediately went to our Ford dealer who found no error code but found our purge valve stuck open. They recommended we replace it, which we did, and we operated the vehicle for 2 years without re-occurrence and using only chevron gas. Recently, it happened again! luckily, we weren't on a steep grade this time or on the freeway, but if a car would have been behind us, we would have likely been rear ended, especially had we been on the freeway. Once again, we shut the engine off, and it reset with the wrench light disappearing, so no diagnostic code got thrown again! based on many complaints, this appears to be a common problem. It's very dangerous as the car immediately losses power to a crawl no matter what speed you are traveling at the time. It seems to be the electronic throttle body in instances where the SUV can stay running, so a code can be obtained before it resets.
The contact's fiancée owns a 2002 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that there was smoke coming from the driver's side front end of the vehicle. The contact stated that while his fiancée was attempting to drive the vehicle the following day, the brake pedal was depressed but was firm, requiring the contact's fiancée to step on the brake pedal to drive. The brake pedal remained on the floorboard and was inoperable, causing the contact's fiancée to shift to park(p) to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the speed control deactivation switch (scds) connectors had burned, and the brake fluid had leaked from the brake fluid reservoir. The dealer replaced the scds sensor and harness under NHTSA campaign number: 05v388000 (vehicle speed control). The dealer declined to perform repairs for collateral damages. The contact stated that he was an auto-electrician mechanic who owned an auto shop. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's auto repair shop, where mechanics replaced the brake master cylinder and cleaned brake fluid off the engine bay. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 163,745.
At 40,000 miles transmission skips gears going from 3-4 4-5 and 7-8. Transmission jolts hard when put into reverse. Valve body was replaced which fixed the issue for a couple of months and now the same issues are occurring.
When driving the vehicle shifts very hard and has a loud clanging in second and fifth gear. It skips those gears and will lag in intersections and on roadways because of the skip. Had it diagnosed by a transmission shop and they said it needed cam phasers. Took it to the dealer and the said it needed a new valve body as the issue was repeatable. Had the valve body replaced and it is still doing it and even worse. No lights came on, and we bought the vehicle used with 81k miles on it and we noticed it right away, so the dealer did a “reprogram” of the software and said it was fine. It started to do it again right away and we called the dealer and they would not return our call. We drove it because we had too until it got bad enough we didn’t feel safe driving it anymore and now it is waiting for the hopes that a new transmission will fix the issue.
“shift system fault” flashes on dash and car suddenly and violently shakes and loses power at higher speeds when trying to accelerate. Also heard a metallic grinding/metallic rattle noise under the car and could not accelerate. Has happened multiple times over the last year and a half.
Vehicle is slipping back into natural when driving. Vehicle losses power and won't move almost causing me to get hit from incoming traffic. It's a known problem with Ford and should be responsible for the 7k cost for new transmission. . Please investigate this. It's too early for a transmission a fault on a 2020.
My 2018 Expedition has been repaired by Ford dealership three times. The vehicle started with a hesitancy to shift into reverse then eventually a hard jerk into gear. Following that, it began to hesitate to accelerate and rattle and shake hard enough to shake the steering wheel. The powertrain loss warning came on Ford pass. Ford dealership said it was transmission and rebuilt it. Three weeks following the repair the very same shaking, rattling and crunching sound started again with power loss. It was intermittent and dealership said with no codes they couldn’t recreate the issue and so no help. The following day on the highway, it started again. I was attempting to stop at a red light and with my foot on the brake, the vehicle attempted to lurch forward and try to go despite the brake. Thankfully, the light turned green and the car in front of me moved. As I continued to drive, I was left stranded with the codes showing actuator failure and cam shaft failure. The dealership then said it was the cam shaft and all actuators that needed to be replaced this time. The same rattling and shaking and power loss they said was caused by the transmission they rebuilt 3 weeks earlier but now it is caused by the cam shaft. So 2 repairs later and 4 weeks, it did it again and this time it caught on fire and burned a hole in my hood. The dealership called me the day after I had it towed into the dealership smoking staying it was the heater hoses that caused the shaking, rattling and power loss. Said they could have it fixed the next day. It is a disaster. It is a major safety issue and I am still paying payments on this car that Ford cannot fix. This car needs to be recalled and they need to refund for cost of vehicle. This car is going to kill someone!.
My Ford Expedition has lost power 4 times requiring me to pull off the interstate and have the car towed. I have been driving 75-80 mph each time this has happened. It is as if the car takes a big deep breath, and then loses all power. It failed most recently on halloween 2023, and then again in March of 2024. Prior to these two times, the car has lost power 2 other times. It has always been serviced at a Ford dealership. All three times including this last time the dash lights on the car have read, "powertrain failure" and "pre-collision brake assist not available". When it failed in March, even though it registered a code both on my dash and in my Ford pass app, the dealership said they could not reproduce the problem therefore, there was nothing they could fix. I am scared to get behind the wheel of this car. I also do not want to sell it to anyone else for fear they will have the same problem. Cars don't just lose power while driving 75 mph. It is dangerous and a definite safety concern. It is not like I am driving a pinto. This was a brand new car, is fully paid for, has clean maintenance records, and is an expensive vehicle. It has been well taken care of and should not have power failure four times at only 4 years old. It is terrifying to be driving at high speed and lose power. I have been very lucky to not have caused a secondary accident on the freeway, or been in an accident myself when this has happened.
