Equipment Problems of Ford Expedition - part 1

This was a rental vehicle obtained from budget at norfolk International airport. On September 17, 2026 at approximately 2:45 p. M. , while driving south toward north carolina, the Ford Expedition developed increasingly severe rumbling and shaking and became difficult to control. All occupants noticed the condition. We reduced speed and pulled off at the first safe available location at approximately 3:00 p. M. Rather than continue driving. After stopping, we inspected the left-rear wheel and found a snapped wheel stud and a missing lug-nut position. Multiple actual threaded lug nuts were loose enough to be turned by hand. Budget roadside assistance dispatched a tow operator. The tow driver independently verified the snapped stud and multiple loose lug nuts and recorded the condition on video before tightening the loose lug nuts so the vehicle could be loaded for towing. The vehicle had approximately 77,000 miles. No crash occurred and no one was injured because we stopped driving once the vehicle became difficult to control. Our party included two young children in car seats. We do not know when or why the wheel stud fractured or why the remaining lug nuts became loose. We are reporting this because a wheel-fastener condition severe enough to cause substantial vibration and difficulty controlling the vehicle could create a serious risk of wheel separation or loss of control if it occurs in this vehicle or in similarly maintained vehicles. Due to the recall listed below there has been multiple instances where I am driving on highway (DC area) and my vehicle kicks back and there is no acceleration power causing the vehicle to transmission may suddenly disengage or feel like it is in neutral, causing the engine to rev unexpectedly before slamming back into gear with a loud clunk and a shift system fault error message. This has caused me to lose control of the vehicle movement and basically wait in the middle of exchanging lanes or driving until it shifts back into gear and allows me to accelerate. Took my vehicle to Ford dealership to be inspected and I was informed by the tech that the parking pawl code came up on the computer. Also informed as there is no remedy for this issue if he was to further check and issues were found with the parking pawl and transmission I would be financially responsible otherwise he cant do nothing about it as directed by his manager. I started by 2019 Ford Expedition and was driving through a parking lot at a low speed when there was an explosion sound (comparable to a gun shot over my left shoulder as the driver). My seatbelt pulled in and locked down. My car smelled like a firework had been set off and there was a white-grey powder across my lefts. I immediately stopped and parked my vehicle. I had my passenger move to the back of the car as a safety precaution. It took effort to get the belt to unlatch and off. We moved the vehicle to a safer parking spot and had it towed to david mcdavid - ftw. I have a seatbelt burn on my neck. My left shoulder, across my chest, and right hip are very sore today. We received the recall notice the day prior. However, the letter states that: Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving your vehicle…. Had this happened while driving at a faster speed, the incident could have very easily been catastrophic. My concern now is that the dealership is trying to say this is an interior trim concern, and Ford’s customer service could do nothing other than repeat their script that there is no remedy at this time. Their advice lent the consumer to saving receipts for rental and/or repair with faulty parts until the advanced notice becomes an active one. I have no vehicle to drive, I have mild injuries, and we have zero support from Ford. Making matters worse, our dealership is wanting to charge us for inspecting the vehicle and calling it an “interior trim concern”, while listing the seatbelt retractor inspection right after it for free. These are the same issue.

The car has recalls since 2024? some are serious safety issues if in an accident. Recurring dangerous transmission defect in my 2020 Ford Expedition (3. 5l ecoboost, 10-speed 10r80, ~136,826 mi). It has lost power and shifted violently multiple times, each a crash risk. 1) ~Aug 22, 2026: accelerating to pass on the highway, the whole vehicle shut down. I lost all power including power steering and had to coast off the road. It restarted after stopping. Losing power and steering while passing at speed is extremely dangerous. 2) weekend of ~Aug 29-31, 2026: going up a slight residential driveway, the transmission slipped (engine revved, vehicle didn't move) then slammed into gear with a hard jolt. 3) another time, accelerating to pass, it made an extremely loud bang and violent jolt; I thought the transmission had failed. Ongoing since I bought it used (June 2023): it repeatedly slams/clunks hard into gear, including while just coasting down a slight grade with no foot on gas or brake, jolting violently as if it dropped into park. This is not just my vehicle. The 10r80 transmission (2020 Expedition, f-150, etc. ) has many complaints for the same thing (sudden downshifts, power loss, harsh shifting, slipping) and is subject to a class action (filed 4/2023, MA) covering 2017-present f-150/expedition/mustang/ranger/navigator, alleging Ford knew since 2018. I raised this repeatedly with Ford and two dealerships and was told there were no recalls and no known issue. Ford's open recall 26s48 (26v402) is only about the parking system and does not cover this loss-of-power/violent-shift behavior. Please investigate.

The parking pawl is engaging during speeds of about 25-30 mph when switching gears. This happens randomly at times and puts everyone in my car at risk because I lose all horsepower to my car. I have to wait until my car drops to about 20 mph to begin accelerating again. The component has not been inspected but does have a current recall. However upon speaking with Ford representatives the remedy will not be available until after April of 2027. I have had the car read for codes and the code stated that it was stuck in park. This is also causing damage to my transmission as it is now skipping gears and showing shifter sensor error. This started to appear around 8/21/2026.

I have a 2020 Ford Expedition, , affected by NHTSA recall 26v402. The recalled condition has actually occurred on my vehicle. The vehicle failed to remain in park and moved in reverse with the driver's door open. It struck a brick mailbox, severely damaged the driver's door, and I was pulled/dragged by the vehicle while my children were inside. This is an actual safety incident involving unintended vehicle movement, property damage, and a potential bodily-injury event. " this just occurred and has not yet been inspected.

Relating to NHTSA id number 11027142 (Ford ssm 5446 and purported remedy ssm 54692). Experience a left turn signal that is automatically erroneously activated after a sharp right hand turn with right turn signal activated. There are two other complaints filed with NHTSA regarding this problem. In my case the left turn signal does not cancel after return to center. This is a potentially dangerous situation, since other drivers don't know what moves you might be intending to make. Ford claims ssm 54692 is a remedy with part number sl1z-13k359-aa installation. This part was installed on 8/5/26 and did not remedy the problem. Since then have been awaiting contact from dealer re Ford engineers solution. Dealer's communications have been quite lacking.

Sun roof exploded while we were driving along on the interstate.

There is frequently a smell of exhaust inside the cabin upon starting the engine before driving. It is concerning that exhaust may be leaking into the cabin leading to potential injuries. The vehicle has not been inspected for this issue specifically but has been through multiple general inspections.

I have 3 small children so I am concerned about my car. The gear shift goes out of drive while driving. If you push the gas and then let up and push the gas again it won’t go and if you keep pushing the gas it will start fishtailing all over the road. You have to take your foot off the gas for a period of time until it goes back in gear which causes you to completely slow down and can cause a crash. When trying to give excessive gas it will disengage and won’t go. It will only engage 1 tire and cause it to fishtail. It has almost caused an accident multiple times because it slips out of gear and it currently has a recall for a similar issue. You can’t pull over or move over wile it disengages because you can’t go anywhere if you push the gas it just accelerates like it was in park. This is not an if something happens it’s a when something happens. Nobody else can drive my vehicle because they won’t know how to stop it from happening and they may get seriously hurt. It has happened on multiple occasions.

Power running boards. The running boards half deploy and stop. The running boards go up and down while the vehicle is in motion. When opening the doors the running boards deploy half way and stop causing the persons exiting the vehicle to step on and uneven surfaces, resulting in twisted ankles and persons falling to the ground. The running boards were seems to malfunction every few years, they were replaced by latrobe chevy Ford 3 years ago and are currently being replaced by bud smail Ford.

The dashboard/instrument panel on my 2021 Ford Expedition is bubbling, warping, and peeling away directly above and around the front passenger airbag location. The dashboard has visibly separated from the underlying structure and continues to worsen. The defective component is available for inspection upon request. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this condition presents a potential safety hazard. The dashboard material is located directly over the passenger-side supplemental restraint system (srs) airbag. I am concerned that the warped and delaminated dashboard could interfere with proper airbag deployment during a crash or cause pieces of the dashboard to break apart and become projectiles when the airbag deploys, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger. There have been no airbag warning lights or messages displayed, and I have not been involved in a crash. The defect developed gradually, beginning with bubbling of the dashboard surface and progressing to peeling and separation. The condition continues to worsen over time. The issue has not yet been confirmed by a Ford dealer or independent repair facility, and the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. My concern is that a dashboard should not deteriorate in the area surrounding a critical safety system on a relatively new vehicle, and I believe this issue should be investigated to determine whether it could affect passenger airbag performance or occupant safety.

The manufacturer Ford issued three urgent safety recalls in may/June 2026, including recall #26s48 for transmission parking system failure and recall #26s34 for front seatbelt failures. The official status from Ford is 'remedy not yet available' and I was notified that parts might not be available until late 2026 or 2027. This vehicle is my essential tool for rideshare work (uber/lyft). Due to federal transportation safety regulations and uber policies, I am legally prohibited from transporting passengers with active, unremedied safety recalls. This has completely destroyed my family's financial livelihood. Furthermore, driving this vehicle puts my life, my passengers, and my 4 children at an imminent risk of death or catastrophic injury due to potential transmission failure while driving or seatbelt failure during an accident. The manufacturer and the dealer (findlay Chevrolet) are failing to provide a remedy within a reasonable timeframe under federal warranty laws, leaving me with a $38,000 active debt for an un-driveable, dangerous asset. I am requesting an official investigation to force a manufacturer buyback.

I am submitting this complaint regarding potential safety issues with my 2018 Ford Expedition max platinum. I purchased the vehicle from sandy sansing Chevrolet in pensacola, florida, and discovered several problems shortly after purchase that I believe may affect the vehicle's safe operation. Within days of purchasing the vehicle, it began displaying an intermittent * oil pressure warning** while driving. Because a low oil pressure condition can lead to engine damage, loss of power, or engine failure, I believe this presents a potential safety concern. The dealership's inspection report completed before the sale states: **"has multiple minor oil leaks, wet but not dripping yet. "** I had the vehicle independently inspected by firestone, which determined the oil leak was coming from the timing cover/timing case area and estimated approximately $3,000 in repairs. I am concerned that the documented oil leak and intermittent low oil pressure warning could increase the risk of engine failure while the vehicle is in operation. I have also experienced what I believe is a brake safety concern. Although the dealership's inspection report indicates the brakes and rotors had been serviced, the brake pedal feels unusually soft or spongy and requires more pedal travel and pressure than expected before the brakes engage. While the vehicle currently stops, I am concerned this condition could reduce braking performance or increase stopping distance. Additional issues include intermittent operation of the power running boards, a non-functioning rear window washer, and a detached rear window defroster electrical connection. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can determine whether these issues are isolated to my vehicle or may indicate a broader safety-related defect affecting other 2018 Ford Expedition vehicles. Step rails not deploying-almost fell out of vehicle.

At highway speed of 70 mph vehicle briefly went into park and shut entire vehicle down, vert traumatized and injured my head from the brief shutdown, could have caused a fatal accident.

Recall 26s28 as I put my hand in the center console and took it out it was cut by the trimming. I than had to stop as I felt and noticed blood was dripping off my hand. The following day I seen the recall not ice in the mail and that there is no repair available yet.

On xxx my 2000 Ford Expedition caught on fire at around 2am. It had not been driven or turned on since xxx, and was sitting parked that whole time. It was parked in the parking lot of my apartment building, right outside of my unit. I was woken up by a loud pop which I believe was the tire exploding, and the flames were tall enough to see outside my second story bedroom window. My entire apartment building was evacuated by the fire department, and some doors were kicked in by them, including mine. After they put the fire out, the fire inspector looked for two hours to determine a cause and were only able to determine that the fire started under the hood, on the drivers side, close to the dashboard area. The vehicle was completely totaled in the fire, and my other car parked next to it was damaged from the fire as well, and the apartment building had a lot of damage from the fire and heat spreading to it. Multiple residents were displaced for a few days at the advice of the fire department, to let units air out from the carcinogenic fumes. The vehicle has been towed and signed over to automoto salvage yard. I was researching what could have started this fire and found this article where the NHTSA investigated over 600 spontaneous Ford vehicle fires including year 2000 Ford Expeditions, caused by cruise control deactivation switches, which are located in the same place under the hood that the fire department determined my fire originated. [xxx] my vehicle was not listed in any recall, but that article states that over 200 vehicles that caught fire were not either. I'm unsure if the salvage yard still has it available for inspection. It has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer. It was inspected by the fire department and police department - insurance did not do their own inspection. While parked overnight, the panoramic sunroof shattered upwards. There is zero evidence of an impact. While opening door to stand on retractable running boards to take a picture, the center area of glass collapsed into the SUV. Rain storms in area and had to immediately tarp roof. Was on vacation 13 hours from home. Had to drive home at 60 mph and re-tarp the sunroof in excess of 5 times. If this happened while driving there would have been dramatic impact to driver distraction and family sitting underneath the sunroof.

I am filing this complaint regarding the repair of recall 25s89 / NHTSA recall 25v572 on my 2017 Ford Expedition el 4wd (VIN: [xxx]). I received Ford's recall notice in April 2026 and brought my vehicle to the dealership on June 8, 2026. Before the repair, the rearview camera functioned intermittently. The dealership diagnosed the vehicle and informed me that the wiring tested properly, voltage was present, and the recall applied because the rearview camera had failed inspection. They determined the camera required replacement under the recall and ordered the replacement part. I returned on xxx, for the recall repair. After installing the replacement camera, the dealership informed me that the rearview camera still did not function. They stated the replacement camera was not the cause of the problem and suggested the issue might involve the apim (accessory protocol interface module). I was told additional diagnosis would cost approximately $280, even though the vehicle was being serviced under the federal safety recall. My concern is that my vehicle left the dealership in a less safe condition than when it arrived. Prior to the recall repair, the rearview camera worked intermittently. After the recall repair, it no longer functioned at all. The dealership considered the recall completed but required me to pay for additional diagnostics to restore the operation of the rearview camera. The repair documentation states that diagnostic trouble code c1001:01 was present, wiring tests were performed, voltage was present, and the recall remedy was to replace the rearview camera. Despite this, the safety defect remains unresolved. I contacted Ford's customer relationship center, which arranged a conference call with the dealership. I requested written documentation describing the repairs performed, the scope of the recall, and the diagnostic results before and after the repair. The spring for the door for the 4-flat trailer plug on vehicle is too powerful. This resulted in the door wearing away at the trailer plug and has resulted in the wires of the trailer light plug breaking. This is available upon request. It puts our safety at risk as our trailer lights can go out and result in less information for other drivers, possibly resulting in a rear-end crash. The problem has not been reproduced, and has not been inspected. The only symptom of the problem in the vehicle is it telling us the trailer was disconnected. The trailer was a 2020 malone microsport trailer.

Manufacturer recall number 26s38 NHTSA recall number26v368 my husband and I have both cut our hands on the ripped chrome trim inside of our Expedition max. We ripped part of the piece off, but there’s a sharp exposed edge and it poses a huge risk. The dealership said the only remedy is buying a new center console and that was quoted to us at nearly $1000.

On June 10, 2026, I attempted to enter my vehicle through the driver's door. The power running board was set to the "automatic" position but failed to deploy when the driver's door was opened. I stepped toward the vehicle expecting the running board to be extended, as it normally would be, but it was not. As a result, I lost my footing and fell. The fall caused a nondisplaced fracture of my left ring finger, which required evaluation at an urgent care facility, x-rays, treatment by a hand specialist, and immobilization in a custom splint. Surgery was considered due to concern for possible rotational deformity of the finger. The running board never deployed during the incident. There were no warning lights, warning messages, or other indications that the running board would not operate. To my knowledge, the problem had not occurred previously. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer or dealer to determine the cause of the running board failure. The running board system is available for inspection upon request. I am submitting this report because the unexpected failure of the automatic running board created a fall hazard that resulted in a documented injury. I am concerned that a similar failure could cause more serious injuries to other drivers or passengers, particularly children, older adults, or anyone with mobility limitations.

Component/system malfunction & availability: the vehicle's air conditioning (a/c) system failed completely. The primary component that failed is the rear a/c compressor/evaporator core. The vehicle and its new and replaced components are available for inspection upon request. The original damaged components are with the dealership. ?safety risk: the sudden and total loss of climate control occurred during extreme weather conditions. This caused an immediate and rapid rise in cabin temperature to unsafe levels, posing a severe risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable passengers. Furthermore, the loss of the a/c system compromised the vehicle's ability to clear window fogging and condensation, rapidly reducing visibility and creating an immediate crash hazard. ?diagnosis & inspection status: the issue has been reproduced and officially confirmed by an authorized dealer/independent service center. However, the vehicle and the failed components have not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. ?prior symptoms & warning signs: there were no warning lamps, error messages, or diagnostic trouble codes displayed on the dashboard prior to the failure. Unknown exactly when the internal component degradation began, but the total failure occurred suddenly without prior symptoms.

There is a recall on the catalytic converters of my year Expedition, but my check engine light came on at 86,000 miles, outside the 80,000 limit Ford put on the recall for the part. I think Ford should stand behind their product and the parts they are using, since the catalytic converters have failed on my car, my husbands Expedition, and my dad’s Ford 150.

No accident, malfunction, warning lights, or safety-related issues occurred. Vehicle is operating normally at this time.

Transmission stalled out in heavy traffic. We had our repair person check the vehicle and they confirmed there has been damage to the transmission due to this. It has not been inspected by police, manufacturer or insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages.

I was made aware of recall last fall. Dealer looked at the vehicle, confirmed diagnosis and stated that there was no fix for the problem. Last month I was contacted by the dealer to have the recall repair completed. I scheduled appointment and brought the car in only to have them tell me that despite back up camera having the issues that they are not able to perform the recall because Ford will not let them unless there are faults registers in the computer which I can't see cause you need a proprietary reader for Fords. They stated that there was a customer support program where if I complained about it Ford might fix the problem, seriously wtf. I do not live close to the dealer. At 5 dollars a gallon it costs me 20 bucks round trip every time I come to the dealer plus my time wasted. The camera is not working properly, it's been diagnosed at this dealer, it's been issued on recall. It should be fixed. This is becoming unreasonable.

The chrome plating on the center console has peel up, causing a finger laceration when reaching into the cup holder.

Vehicle unknowingly loses power and shuts off while driving. A wrench appears on dash with check manual message.

Backup camera is provides a distorted image more than 80% of the time. This is a known issue for 2018 Ford Expeditions but it has not been reported as a problem for 2019’s. I am telling you that it is a problem that I am experiencing it. It is the same as the prior year issue. It affects all Ford suvs in that era. Fixing it is a temporary solution - it is a known issue that they are frequently defective.

At highway speeds there is a vibration. Had at the dealership for road test, balance, and alignment. Did not fix the problem. Discovered that many more are having the same issue.

The car would flash warning light failure on blind spot, engine and felt like would shift out of gear dropping speed and then speedometer would drop to zero. Very scary when driving. Occurred at multiple speeds; 3 times before took to get evaluated /fixed. Mechanic said had 3 other vehicles like mine pst month same issue.
