The vehicle was well maintained. The tires had sufficient tread. The authorities on site took pictures of the tread separation and recommended reporting this as the tire appeared to be defective.

Failure Date: 02/19/2008

Tires are defective with cupping causing vibrations tires look swollen and uneven threading. We took the car to check suspension system and they say everything is fine. I know that it is the tires. Which makes the car unsafe. I have children and because of the tires being unsafe I don't want to put my family in danger.

42 Tire problem of the 2000 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 06/08/2006

I purchased 4 goodyear wrangler rt/s tires from discount tire CO. On 1/17/2005 the truck began to shake and vibrate while driving at highway speed. I returned the truck to discount they rebalanced and rotated the tires and informed me if the truck continued to vibrate to take it to the dealership because it must be mechanical. I returned it to the dealership, they aligned, and roadforce balanced the tires. They found that their was a defect in the tires because too much weight was needed to balance the tires. They recommended that the tires be replaced. I returned the truck to discount tire CO. They again did not find a defect in the tire. I then took it to a third party big o tire CO. They inspected the tires and found a "hop" in the rear tires. It was again recommended to replace the defected tires.

43 Tire problem of the 2001 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 04/21/2006

1. Ford firestone tire recall: 12/2/02 all tires replaced as per recall requirements. Mileage: 15750. 2. Friday, 4/21/2006: during a road trip this past weekend, my right front tire shredded. I heard thudding noises, pulled off the I-75, checked around my 2001 Ford Expedition, was unable to see anything wrong. However a few miles later, I realized something was seriously wrong and pulled off of the freeway. I called 911 sometime between 3 and 3:15 pm 4/21/06 for roadside assistance. Tim the towman towed my vehicle off the freeway to a nearby gas station. There he observed that the right front tire had shredded. The shredding process caused damage as follows: a) right front bumper now dangles because screws sheared off apparently; b) tire casing needs to be resecured, since it was flapping. C) there may be additional damage to the undercarriage as well as cables. Est. Mileage: 47600. 3. Tim the towman replaced the shredded tire with my full-size spare. He used twine to temporarily support the rf bumper. He temporarily secured the tire casing. The following Monday, I called Ford customer no-service. They said that a local dealership would need to corroborate my story before they could determine whether Ford was liable to replace the shredded tire (and possibly replace all of the others, as well), and to pay for the repairs needed on the front bumper and casing. The tallahassee Ford dealership has a poor reputation, so I was permitted to take my Expedition to the Lincoln-Mercury dealership. After hearing my story and examining my vehicle, the service manager said that Ford offered no warranty on the replacement tires. Even if they had replaced defective tires with defective tires, they did not stand behind their product. He offered to give me a discount on michelin tires (four) to replace the continental tires. He said there was little tread left on the remaining tires. These tires have slightly over 30,000 miles on them.

45 Tire problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 01/12/2006

All four of the tires in my Ford Expedition lose 4 pounds of air every week. There is some kind of defect any the dealership isn't fixing the vehicle. I was told by Ford that a engineer looked at me vehicle on the 7th visit and this never occurred. I have been lied to by Ford and my vehicle still has not been fixed even though it is under warranty. The issue is that they know there is a defect that can't duplicate it so they keep adding air and let me leave the dealership only to return a few days later. Who will stand up for the consumer and make them repair the vehicle?.

53 Tire problem of the 2004 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 05/19/2004

In may 2004 I purchased a 2004 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 from crossroads Ford in cary nc. The vehicle odometer reading was 10 miles. The day after the purchase I returned the vehicle and three of the original continental tires were replaced due to excessive road force. N August 2004 I brought the Expedition back to x-rds Ford for service. A fourth continental tire was replaced due to excessive road force. I took the Expedition to perry bros. In smithfield nc for service at 11000 miles in November 2004. Perry bros. Told me that two of the continental tires were worn out. I took the Expedition back to x-rds Ford as soon as possible and they found that all four of the second set of continental tires showed excessive and unusual tread wear. Crossroads Ford offered me a third set of continental tires which I declined. I was charged $273 to have a set of michelin tires put on. I believe that there is some defect in either the continental tire or Ford Expedition or incompatibility arising therein that is causing this vehicle/tire combination to be dangerous. I understand that people were killed and injured by this same problem about four years ago. I feel that my family and I were placed in jeopardy by Ford and its agent, crossroads Ford.

54 Tire problem of the 2003 Ford Expedition

Failure Date: 12/19/2003

2003 Expedition shakes while traveling, with the shake/vibration increasing as speed increases, and becomes severe. Have had to dealership 3 times now, but continues. In searching online, this is a common issue, and appears to be linked to the continental tires. Between the shake in the vehicle and unknown what is occurring to tires as the vehicle travels and shakes, I would think there is a risk of damage to the tires that could result in injury to the occupants. Ford seems to be shirking the issue, which seems strange to me based on the issues they experienced with tires and the explorer.

Failure Date: 08/11/2003

This is a modified copy of a letter sent to continental tire of north America, inc. And to Ford motor company. The reason for informing the NHTSA of this is the hope that these companies will be held accountable for the products they sell the american public. I drive is a 2001 Ford Expedition, which at the time of the incident had 26,000 miles on it and came stocked with general grabber aw tires dot# adt044t4900 size 275/60/17. The reason for this letter is not only to inform you of my disgust, but also to inform you that this tire caused close to $3,000 worth of damage to my vehicle and also put my family and I in danger on that day and every other day we drove on general tires. I also was told by several tire distributorships, the tires were poorly made and in order for Ford to make a buck and continental tire CO to increase their profit margin equipped thousands of Ford vehicles with an inferior product. I dont expect poor quality on any part of a vehicle that costs more then $40,000, which is why I am forwarding this letter to Ford motor CO. As a result, I have lost all faith and confidence in your ability to produce a tire that is suitable for the american public, as well as Ford to produce a superior product for its customers. This is why I am asking for total reimbursement for all costs, including replacement of all tires to another brand and cost of a rental vehicle while my car is being repaired. (all receipts are included, but this is an estimate and not a final total. ) it should also be noted that I did hurt my back during this incident, but did not receive medical attention. I put this in the claim information report so if anything arises you can be informed. The tire in question will be sent out of gainesville TX this week. Your prompt attention to this matter is appreciated. Cordially, bill coury.
