1 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2009 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/14/2020

SUV seems to be idled during start up or even when driving. Sounds airy like its trying to accelerate. Also I have had break pads replaced more than usual. Mechanic said it was reported that they have gone out more than normal. Each time going out before warranty expired. Today, car was placed in reverse and car spent out of control spinning around 3 times before it came to a complete stop before crashing into another vehicle. This took place in the parking lot of walmart.

2 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

On January 6, 2020, I was driving to work, approaching a red light and could not stop. I was going around 40 mph. Then, I begin pressing on the break with my right foot and could not stop. Next, I used both feet pressing the break pedal to the floor and could barely bring the truck to a stop. At the same time, there were warning lights flashing (parking break, all wheel drive, traction control) on the dash. I immediately took the vehicle to dealership where I purchased it. They provided me with a loaner vehicle. On Friday, January 10, 2020, the dealership contacted me to provide me an update. They advised that Ford motor company advised them that this was a service announcement (meaning this information is known to Ford and all Ford dealerships not to the customers). Dealership advised rear break calibers needs replacing, rear break motor needs replacing, and rear break pads needs replacing. Dealership advised all parts are on national back order and does not know when they will be available.

4 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2012 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/05/2016

When stepping on the brakes, I could feel and hear a drag. Car has 17,400 miles, right rear pads were metal to metal and cut into the rotor. Rr brake pads were extremely difficult to remove, indicating the pads were seized into the bracket. This wording is taken from the Ford service repair invoice. I have had many cars and never had to replace brakes at a low mileage. This is a safety issue that needs to be looked into.

10 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/15/2012

I purchased a 2004 Ford Explorer in July 0f 2011, and traded in my 2001 Oldsmobile of 5 years. I also purchased the 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Before driving it off the lot I had the dealer fix the abs system because the light was on. There is a crack going down the back of the trunk but nothing else was wrong at the time so I left the crack alone. In April of 2012 I took it to the dealership for a belt, check trans, shocks, ball joints, and a ticking in the heater when knob was turned to heat (not cool). I told him to just fix what was on the warranty and also give it a oil change. He informed me that the trans was fine. After getting the car back my heat went out and I was told by a mechanic buddy that my brakes, rotters, emergency brake pads and the back tires were shot. So I had him replaced them because this was also not covered on warranty. Just last week my rpm started jumping with miles over 65. (no lights were on at the time)so I took it to 6 different places getting estimates on what could be wrong. All shops said the same thing. "start with fuel filter, oil filters and oil change". The day after I paid for all this the service engine light came on. (egr valve code) the man at auto zone told me to take it off and clean it with spray and let it dry before replacing. I took it to a shop and had them do this. The same day I picked up the car my service engine light came on again, o/d light and the car was driving like I was hauling a bus and jumping. I took it back the next day and he replaced the egr valve new since the same code was showing up. Later that day after getting it back the car started doing the same thing after driving for 5 miles this was Friday 9/21/12.

11 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1998 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/23/2010

I own a 2000 Ford ranger and a 1998 Ford Explorer. I believe the accelerator pedal and the break pedal are too close together on both vehicles. On at least four occasions I have experienced my tendency to have my foot on both pedals at the same time when in a situation where I have to stop quickly. I t seems that I "panic" to some degree when in a situation where I must stop quickly to avoid a collision. This may be a very isolated personal 'quirk" as it were, but I have caused two rear end collisions so far and I now know that I am pressing both pads when trying to break. I know this because I remember vividly how my motor was accelerating while I thought my foot was only on the brake and I could not understand why my vehicle was not coming to a stop when most likely I had plenty of space available to make a sudden stop and avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me.

16 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/13/2005

After bringing my car to the dealership, I was informed that I needed back brakes. I took the car to my mechanic and he informed me that my brake pads and rotors were completely rusted through and rotted. This could have potentially caused the car to become unable to stop. I had to replace all four brakes (routine), brake pads, and rotors. My car only has 40,000+ miles on it.

17 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/27/2005

Hello, while recently replacing the disc brake pads on the rear of our 2000 Ford Explorer 4dr XLT 4wd (aprox 50k miles), I noticed severe chaffing in multiple spots of the emergency brake cables just aft of where they split from one cable into two armored cables (left rear wheel well area). They cross over each other and due to obvious vertical suspension travel they were chaffing against each other and it appeared one was also chaffing against the frame somewhat (the latter I'm guessing occurs only when carrying a heavy load). The chaffing was so bad that it had rubbed all the way through to the actual left cable (aprox 50% of the cable diameter)allowing water etc. . . Kicked up by the wheel to penetrate and severely corrode the cable. Soon after I had removed the wheel, the cable snapped in two due to the suspension being unloaded and the severe corrosion of the cable. I am curious if there is already a recall on this or if you have had other reports of the same problem on other Explorers. Unless my vehicle is missing clamps etc. . . This appears to be a bad design to have the two cables touching the way they do. I have taken multiple digital pictures with the suspension unloaded and with the vehicle back on the ground and would be happy to send them to you. This is very concerning to me because if the e-brake were to be used at a decent rate of speed, one wheel braking action could obviuosly cause a loss of control of the vehicle, not to mention the vehicle rolling down the driveway due to loss of parking brake action. The parts (cables) are availaibe as they are still installed on the vehicle at this time. Please contact me with any info you have. Thanks,.

25 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1999 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/05/2001

Reports of early brake repalcement (between 15 & 25,000 mi) have been made to me, including those by the dealer's service consultant. Due to Ford's poor record with the tire recall notice, I am convince that inadequate brake pads are installed during manfufacturing to save money. Thus premature wear & failure results. I am sending Ford a letter requesting reimbursement for a non-warranteable item.

26 Brake Disc Pads problem of the 1997 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/20/1999

The brakes system failed to stop the truck going at only 30 mph as I approched a stop sign. I went right through the stop sign. Immediatly after pulling over I applied the brakes again to check them and they worked fine. The dealer could not find anything wrong with the brake system. ,other than to have the pads and shoes replaced because they were getting worn low . However I dont believe the problem of not being able to stop the vehicle was due to the brake pads or shoes but possible with the abs system or its components because the brakes all of a sudden didn't work and then worked again immediatly thereafter. The brake pedal did not go all the way to the floor as if fluid was lost and there was no grinding from the pads or shoes because they were not that low. The brakes just failed temporarily and luckly I was not in an accident but am afraid that if happens again I may not be so luck next time.
