16 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/08/2008

I have a 2004 Explorer limited and just turned 14,000 miles and my abs light comes on every time I start the car and accelerate. Also the cruise stopped working. From what I have read it sounds like the abs module which Ford has apparently been aware off. Not happy!! I would not expect this sort of problem with only 14,000 miles.

17 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/08/2007

My 2004 Ford Explorer has several issues since 38,000 miles, the recent complaint at 57,000 miles is the abs module and the cruise control. The abs light came on and at the same time the cruise control stop working. Took it to the dealership I purchased it at. They tried to reset the computer. Advised me I would need a new acs module for the abs. I contacted Ford motor company to try and get the module replaced under warranty. The best Ford would do is to split the cost of the module with me, but I would have to pay for labor to install. When asked how much the module cost. Was told 1160. 00. This would not guarantee that I would not have this problem again. The dealership told me they would try to find a used module. I called back after several days and was informed they could not find one. The next day I got on the phone and within 20 mins had found a module at a local salvage yard. Asked the dealership if they would purchase the used module with the money Ford was going to provide with the new module to fix it. They said no. Ford motor company is aware that many of the 2004 Explorers have abs and powertrain issues, yet they fail to acknowledge. Now I can tell a difference in my braking. Sometimes now when I have to use the brakes, I can feel something is not right. I am worried that when I will need the abs to work I will not have the ability to stop. I am disappointed that the cruise control has stopped working as well with this amount of mileage. The dealership has been unable to tell me if the cruise control is related to the abs module. They never check the cruise control problem and was not aware of it till I had called them back on the used abs module. Ford needs to step up and take care of these major issues with these Explorers. . . . Poor parts installed at time of manufacturing. Ford should be liable.

18 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/10/2007

I own a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT, I have had problems with my abs light coming on and my brakes not working correctly, they pulsate as if they are trying to engage even when it is 90 degrees outside and completely dry. Nothing upsets me more than having to put on my brakes and having the feeling they are not going to work. This puts me in danger as well as those who own this model. I am scared to drive it anymore. I am asking for help here before I kill myself, my family or some random person because of faulty brakes. I don't think I should have to pay out of pocket for faulty abs problem that Ford has screwed up on. Below it asks for an incident date, let me tell you there have been several times in which they kick on and it feels like I'm not going to stop!!!! why does there have to be a death before these companies finally recall and fix the problem??.

25 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/08/2004

Abs warning light had been coming on periodically, thus losing abs. After a few weeks, the light was off, but my abs kicked in on dry pavement, making it difficult to stop. This happened a couple of times. Car only had 38,000 miles. Brought it to dealer. They diagnosed it as a faulty sensor on one of the tires. . . Since I was out of warranty and this was an item which takes "wear and tear" , Ford would not assist in the payment at all. Dealer also stated that it was not a safety issue, however, if it was an emergency braking situation I do not feel that I could have stopped in time.

26 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2000 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/16/2004

My brakes failed at a low rate of speed. I was driving my infant to day care at about 45 miles an hour. A car in front of me made a stop so I hit my brakes to slow down and nothing happened. The Explorer would not slow down. No abs light, ,no loss of pedal,no vibration, nothing. I pumped the brake pedal and still nothing. I had to go into oncoming traffic and make a very sharp turn onto a side rd to avoid hitting the car in front of me. Because of this I almost hit an on coming car. After a few minutes the brake seemed fine again. I have heard of people having this problem before and to my knowledge, no cause has yet been found. Please look into this.

33 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

Abs system is defective on 2002 Explorers. Abs light came on many many times within a 1 year span since I bought the vehicle new. Took the vehicle to the dealer 3 times and they stated the fault was from the rear speed sensor assembly and replaced it every time. Other problems encounter include hose disconnect on rear washer (repaired by dearler), cracked third brake light (replaced by dealer), defective rear view mirror (3 incidents, eventually replaced it myself with an aftermarket part), rear seat belt would not stay buckled (assembly replaced by dealer), climate control leak to lower even if set to upper vent (design flaw, dealer stated this was normal), stereo will intermittently not turn on (cannot get dealer to verify), brake petal location relative to accelarator petal causes undue strain on leg, floor vent expells hot air directly at calf, fit and finish is horrible on a $30k+ vehicle! I have no confidence in Ford's product or there service network. I can safely say this will be the last Ford I will ever buy.

34 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2003 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

Antilock brake warning light comes on and goes off. When light comes on the brake pedal will go to the floor and will still stop, but pedal pulsates vigorously. This occurs under normal braking. Also when the light is on, under a heavy stop, all four wheels will lock up. The truck has been at the dealer (gwinnett place Ford, duluth, GA) for five weeks now. They say that they have four other Explorers with the same problem. Ford currently does not have any way to fix the problem at this point. There has been a revised antilick brake control module that was supposed to be released last Friday. As of this morning, Ford has stopped the release with "quality issue - all parts are bad and cannot be sold" so now I am back at the starting point and still driving a smaller rental vehicle instead of the $34,000 truck my company bought for me to drive to do my job.

35 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/22/2003

Abs light comes on intermittently, the brakes seem to stick and smell like they are burning. I have had the vehicle in for service 3 times for the same problem but the problem happens intermittently, so 2 of the 3 dealerships said that there was no problem. My brake pads are now pre-maturely worn and the latest dealership has claimed to have replaced a sensor on the differential that will "fix" the problem. After being told that there wasn't a problem, next that the rear brakes were worn out, and then that the sensor was bad. My vehicle has 25,000 miles on it and about 30% left on the rear brakes and 40% on the front brake pads. I have made 4 round trips from chicago to new orleans, and 1 round trip from chicago to las angeles totaling about 13,000 of the 25,000 miles on the vehicle. I have never had a vehicle that needed brake pads replaced after 25,000 let alone a vehicle with over half of its miles from interstate driving. Ford refuses to take responsibility for the pre-mature wear of my brakes. After reading several of the similar complaints on this website, I doubt that Ford dealers have a clue about what the actual problem is and how to fix it.
