Multiple times my brakes have had to have repairs because of a failure in the emergency brake system. Twice within the past 6 months I have had the e-brake lock up, get stuck, or fail in a way that required full replacement of my rotors, pads, brake lines, and fluid resulting in thousands of dollars in damages. After the first failure in this, I stopped using the e-brake, however had the problem repeat itself only a few months later. The time earlier this year was noticed when the brakes were pulsating while driving, and the second occurrence this year was noticed when the fluid was drained and a "low brake fluid" light came on, and was further examined after fluid did not stay in the system for very long (matter of an hour or two).

The rear air conditioner line rubbed against the brake line causing brake line failure. The rupture occurred during an attempt to suddenly stop. There were no signs of rust either inside or outside the brake line. The failure occurred at about 156,000 miles on the vehicle. Oddly enough, the mechanic specifically noted that rust was not a factor in this case as is common on many newer vehicles. I have owned the vehicle since 3/7/2006. No collision work has been performed on the vehicle since taking ownership.

The brake pedal went to the floor as I was about to pull out of a parking space. I shut the vehicle down and called for a tow. I had the vehicle towed to a service station. The mechanic found that the rubber hose component of the brake line had sprung a leak, leading to the complete lack of braking. My concern is that if it had happened on the highway or in traffic, or just about any other moving situation, I would likely have crashed, with dire results to me and potentially to others. There was no warning. There were no lights. I have never experienced a situation like this in over 30 years of driving approximately 1 million miles . Very disconcerting. Very disappointing. I would like for Ford engineers to explain themselves.
The contact owns a 2006 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the brake pedal failed to engage and sunk into the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The technician then recommended having the brake lines bled. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 57,500.

Brake failure, front wheel brake hose (burst/failed), 3x in one year including failure of new parts installed by Ford. This resulted in total lack of brakes, in once case while traveling on i287 at high speed! this was in 20011/2012 before we traded car in. Ford insisted there was no problem with the part. The car had about 100,000 miles on it, was 6-7 years old. I have never experienced this type of failure on any other car I owned including many that were much older and had many more miles . . . Let alone 3x on the same vehicle! this really must be a defective part!!! an the problem seems to be ongoing with newer models of the Ford Explorer as well?.
The contact owns a 2004 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while going 45 mph, the brakes were applied but failed. The contact tried to pump the brake pedal and it would only depress partially. She tried again a few moments later and the brake pedal was depressed completely into the floorboard. The contact had to use the parking brake in order to slow down. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection where they informed the contact that there was a failure in the brake line, which needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred several times later. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 115000.
We have a 2000 Ford Explorer bought new from holman Ford. The rear metal brake line that is mounted on the rear axle, connecting both rear brakes failed while driving on rte 42 in new jersey. The SUV was slowed down by driving on the median strip of the highway. This incident occurred at the height of morning rush hour. Upon inspection of the brake line, it was found that the line "rusted" through, letting brake fluid to rapidly spray out when the brakes were applied. The brake line is mounted to the rear axle by metal clips attached to the rear axle. At the center of the rear axle, the brake line failed, where it is fastened to the clip. The brake line is mounted this way by Ford. After many attempts to buy a new oem brake line from Ford, Ford informed me that the part was discontinued. And for holman Ford, I will never by a car or anything from this dealership!! this is a major safety hazard.

Hi,I'm not sure if this is the correct site for me to be writing but I bought a 1999 Ford Explorer from a dealer in new boston on or around 7/23/2010 it had 113,027 miles on it, I was told it was fully inspected with no issues and they put a safety inspection sticker on it. On 8/13/2010 I droped said Ford off at auto fair Ford in manchester, n. H. To have the vehicle checked out with appr. 113850 miles on it and they found multiple safety failures and violations such as bad bad ball joints, emergency brake was inoperable, brake line leaks and worn brakes that could not have past inspection amoung other safety inspection issues. It ended up costing me about $2700. 00for mostly safety repairs. How can a safety inspector issue a safety sticker with these problems? do I have any kind of recourse and if so to whom or to what agency could I contact?
thank you for any and all help

The contact owns a 2000 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 15-20 mph he engaged the brakes to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him and the brake pedal went to the floor. He engaged the brakes a second time and there were no brakes. He shifted into first gear in order to avoid a crash. He stated that using the shifter slowed the vehicle down in time for the other vehicle to move out of the way. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and he was advised that the brake line was damaged by rust. The approximate failure and current mileages were 78,000.
Rear metal brake line, running across rear axle, ruptured due to extensive corrosion. This resulted in complete loss of rear brakes. A new metal brake line had to be fabricated [part was not available from Ford]and installed. Dealer cost $400+. Note: several Ford dealers and brake shops advised that this is a common problem due to the fact that these brake lines were not properly coated to guard against corrosion.

99 Ford Explorer, 1. No brakes, 2. Brake line wore through down by the metal power steering pump pipes. 3 had it towed to the garage.
The rear brake line broke due to corrosion.
Brakes failed while backing up due to a hole rusted in the rear steel brake line that runs from the left rear wheel caliper to the right rear caliper. Lost all braking. Towed to Ford dealer for service where brake line was replaced. Told by service manager problem is not uncommon. This is on a 1997 Ford Explorer with only 60,000 miles. I have the old brake line ,which has minimal surface rust except for the center area that is held by a retaining clip to the top of the differential housing. I feel this is not a normal event and is not acceptable and was surprised to be told this failure is not uncommon! I had to spend $283. 00 plus a towing fee to have a problem corrected, that I feel is a premature failure. I at first expected to find a blown caliper or a brake hose split, not a rusted out brake line. I do have the old brake line in my possession.
Brake failure leaving personnel residence (noted above). Rear steal brake line burst leaking brake fluid and DE-mobilizing brake system (pedal went to the floor, stopped the vehicle with emergency brake). Leak was in the middle of the vehicle. Brake line between the rear axle and spare tire. Brake line was rusted away. Local repair shop replaced the line.
1998 Ford Explorer brakes failed when trying to apply in traffic. The consumer was informed the brake line was corroded. The mechanic stated the brake line was not made with the proper materials.
1998 Ford Explorer had brake failure due to the brake fluid eating through the metal. When the brakes failed, the consumer hit another vehicle. The brake line was made of metal and had a hole in it.
Brake failure - rear brakes failed, brake warning light came on. Brake line rusted out at rear by axle. New line installed. Garage said common problem on Fords.

The contact owns a 1997 Ford Explorer. He stated that in 2004 while the vehicle was parked he noticed transmission fluid leaking from the vehicle at 50,000 miles. A local mechanic stated that the brake lines were corroded. The mechanic replaced the brake line system for $880. 00. In December of 2009, while driving the vehicle he noticed that the rear brakes were failing off of the vehicle. The mechanic stated that the rear brake line was corroded. The rear brake line was replaced for $135 00. The manufacturer took a report, but no assistance or call back was offered. The current and the failure mileage was 83,000. Updated 2/17/10.
When attempting to stop, the bakes failed. The dealer stated that the brake line corroded. No impact reported. The non corroding steel brake line rusted and ruptured.
While replacing the tires consumer noticed that brake line wore out. As result, the chassis of the vehicle also wore out. Dealership was notified.
Failure of left rear brake hose, causing loss of brakes. The brake hose ruptured because it had been rubbing against the vent line on the rear axle.
The abs hydraulic brake line from l/h fender abs component to r/h front brake assembly was rubbing against the steering column which caused it to wear. Steel brake line was replaced.
1997 Ford Explorer developed two failures of the brake line. ** answer required***. The consumers wife experienced a loss of brakes due to the failure of the brake line above the rear axle. The incident happened a second time, but there was no accident, both failures were caused by corrosion.
While driving down a canyon lost all brake power and fluid. Brake pedal went to floor. Also, vent hose came out of rear differential, laying on top of brake line, and wore a hole in line. Please add VIN. A worn hole in the rubber brake line caused the failure.
Extended stopping distance. Consumer normally traveled at 55-60mph. Nhtsa recall 99v123000/ manufacturer's recall 99s16. Dealer checked for recall, this vehicle wasn't included although it had same defect.
Fuel line broke which is located near exaust system manifold. Consumer is very concerned for safety. The fuel line bracket broke at the bracket on the left hand side of the engine by the valve cover, this was found be the strong smell of gas while the a/c was on.
