Adhesive to the front door upper panel (securicode keyless entry keypad) did not adhere properly and the keyless entry pad and molding broke on the highway and flew off. This caused a malfunction signal to the liftgate (sensor registered as lift gate ajar, when effectively closed) interior lights won't turn off and liftgate won't open.

When having the recalls fixed on my Explorer the back liftgate is not center even the dealership fixing it said it was not also. They informed me I would need to bring it to a body shop to have it fixed. I have never been in an accident or hit anything so there is no reason for it not to be centered.

Tl the contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. While driving approximately 65 mph, the keyless entry pad on the exterior of the driver's door fractured and fell off into traffic. Simultaneously, the liftgate ajar message illuminated. The contact stopped at a nearby fuel station and attempted to correct the failure by applying masking tape to re-attach the keyless entry pad to the door. The contact stated that several wires were exposed in the process. Supreme Ford of slidell (400 east howze beach road, slidell, louisiana 70461, (877) 836-8413) was made aware of the failure and stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle and that the warranty coverage expired at 36,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Rear glass liftgate hinge broke causing glass to fall out of position. Vehicle was stationary and liftgate glass was being opened when the hinge failed. This is the second Ford Explorer this happened to. The first one was a 2006 Ford Explorer.

I found cracks in the door jam of the rear liftgate on the driver's side of the vehicle. Following this discovery I found floor boards soaked in water, water dripping down my 3rd row seat belt onto the floor boards and into the spare tire well. Following this my moonroof quit working. Then I received a letter regarding emissions entering the back of the vehicle and causing people to pass out and wreck their vehicles. Took the car to Ford and the Ford dealership won't cover the cracks in the non wrecked vehicle under the emissions warranty because they state they are unrelated. If water is getting into the back of the car through a crack then emissions probably are too.
On 10/31/17 while out with my children trick-or-treating, the liftgate on my leased 2017 Ford Explorer became "stuck" in an upright position and would not close electronically or manually. My family and I had pulled over and parked in a residential area to get items out from the rear storage area. I had opened the hatch with the electronic switch and the door stopped about 2/3 of the way up. As this had happened to me previously, I followed the manual directions to set the liftgate open height. We finished getting our items out of the vehicle and pressed the control button to close. It was at this point that the liftgate--now at maximum height--simply made "whirring" sounds and would not close. Despite referencing the owner's manual, calling Ford roadside assistance and scouring the internet for potential solutions, all attempts to bypass the electronic system/motor and manually close the door were unsuccessful. I was forced to drive my family home with the rear liftgate precariously left wide open. The next day I was advised by my leasing company to have a tow truck pick the vehicle for safety reasons. The tow driver was shocked at this odd malfunction and expressed concern transporting the vehicle as road bumps could potentially cause excessive bouncing and permanent damage. We detached the lift arms holding up the rear gate so as to close the door--only to find that the rear hatch still would not fully close. The report from the Ford dealership here in phoenix was simply that the "liftgate would not close manually due to the motor binding. " they subsequently replaced the motor and noted the "system is now working as designed at this time. " I asked my advisor if there was a manual override for this and he said "no. " I believe that Ford should conduct a safety recall of these liftgate components and engineer a manual override for when they go out.
Awoke the morning of may 10, 2017 to find the entire back liftgate and window exploded outwards and inwards of our Ford Explorer. The vehicle was parked in front of our home, we are rural, so no evidence of someone purposely breaking it. Our sheriff in cascade county, montana, stated it appears to be something internal probably the lift struts exploding. This seems to be a problem as stated on many online sites, and many Ford Explorers have this problem. This particlar model VIN number did not show up as recalled, although we sit here looking at the damage caused by this problem. We would appreciate someone looking into this, as it could happen to anyone and prove to be very dangerous if this vehicle were being driven when this explosion occured. Please check into this ASAP.

The rear liftgate mount broke off and window fell on my daughters head and bent the other mount and broke left strut off. Can't line it up to get it to close and latch shut. Can't drive the car or liftgate will fall off. Going to get some rope and try to tie it on. It was in front of house with the whole hatch open to get groceries out.

Metal body cracking on upper area panel where liftgate hinges are. Creating water damage to the interior part of the third row. This has been ongoing for about two years and the cracks are getting bigger.
The automatic liftgate functioned on its own without any operator input. This has happened 3 times within approximately one month of ownership. Also one instance of liftgate closing on head. Ford claims they are aware of similar complaints and is working on a fix. ??? if the operator were not aware this occurred and a child or pet were in the 3rd row, this could have serious consequences. Please see attached repair order with Ford's response. All instances so far were vehicle in park with operator near the rear end or behind of the vehicle.

The liftgate glass hinge on my 2004 Ford Explorer broke as I was closing the rear window glass. Without warning it just came undone with the screw popping loose. Cheaply made material of the liftgate glass hinge was clearly the cause, along with a faulty design that allows the bolt to strip out of the hinge.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the lift gate window became detached intermittently. The liftgate door failed to close properly and it developed a crack at the bottom. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the lift gate needed to be repaired and the window needed to be replaced. The contact was not included in recall NHTSA campaign id number: 04v442000 (structure). The vehicle was to be inspected, diagnosed and repaired by an authorized dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 1,002.
This happened to our 2006 Ford Explorer (eddie bauer edition, v8 4wd). The rear liftgate glass exploded into a million tiny pieces with no evidence of external trauma. The car was parked in the driveway at the time and the temperature was above freezing (low 40s) and it was not in the sun. Approximately half the glass was scattered across the driveway - 10+ feet away. The rest of the glass was in the back of the SUV. Fortunately no one was around when this happened - and we were not driving the car at the time. This could have resulted in serious injury to a bystander - or an accident as I can only imagine how much that would alarm the driver. I will be cleaning glass bits from the driveway and back of the SUV for a long time to come! at least it is not too warm out so no is tempted to walk barefoot on the drive.

. Got home and noticed a crack all the way thru panel below window on liftgate.
While driving at approximately 35 mph, the top portion of the liftgate on the vehicle opened independently and then the driver side hinge fractured causing the liftgate to fall and hang by only one side. In addition, the compression rod was bent when this occurred. In order to continue driving the vehicle the compression rod had to be removed and the liftgate had to be temporarily fastened with harnesses. The vehicle was then taken to a body shop to be repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate mileage was 83,000.

The liftgate hindge fractured allowing the glass to fall nearly breaking my hand. This hinge was recalled by NHTSA campaign id number 04v442000 / Ford recall no. 04s20. In contacting customer service tonight on a Ford transmission issue, I discovered the previous hinge recall and they indicated that that hinge had been replace once in 2004 and it was my bad luck that it failed a second time. They would make no restitution for the failed part. It is unconscionable that they would have the same issue as a previous recall and not correct the issue again. It is clearly a serious safety hazard they should address, reimburse me for the part I purchased through Ford and replace the other hinge before it also fails and hurts someone.
Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the panel around the rear glass of the liftgate detached from the vehicle. Driver side hinge disconnected, the bolt was missing. The shifting, unbalance weight weight caused passenger side hinge to crack. The window fell striking the back of the head of the owner, unlocking and reaching in to the cargo space. A small child was with her who could have been seriously injured,. Had this top of the liftgate fallen off in traffic it would have caused seriouc injurie and car damage. Many complaints of this manufacturing defect have been filed and recalls were in effect for other model years.
