36 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/24/2019

I thought the vehicle was having struts issues in the front as well as a sway bar. However I finally got an appointment at the Ford dealership and they stated that the issue was caused by a failing electronic steering rack. This vehicle only have 42,524 miles on it and this should not be happening already. This could potentially fail causing you to lose power steering and cause an accident. The vehicle makes the noise when turning slowly to the right or when backing up. It will also make the noise when you are stationary and turn the wheel back and forth. The quote I received for the repair was $1,770. This is not something that should have to be repaired on a 2015 vehicle with low mileage.

37 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/09/2019

Driving 55mph on I-94 last night in a steady rain and check battery message came up in the left ip display. Within a few seconds I lost the power steering, then the center console entertainment/info screen, then the instrument cluster went black with the headlights and windshield wipers which were on highest setting slowed but continued to operate only while in the highest setting. This scenario continued off and on for the next 30 miles with intermittent electronic steering failure, internal ip and console screen failure and exterior lighting failures. We pulled over each time and within a varied amount of time from a few seconds to a few minutes, a sound similar to a squealing belt would be heard and the system would "reboot" and all functioning would be restored for a limited time. We limped the vehicle home over the course of the next hour and a half for 35 miles as I was not leaving the car on the side of the freeway or in detroit if I could safely avoid it. This morning (Sunday) I tested the battery and had the battery and alternator tested under load at an auto parts store and both were within normal parameters. Belt looked good with visual inspection and 1 hour of idle and drive time close to home in damp puddling roads could not get any adverse symptoms to reappear. It will go to the Ford service department at our local dealer tomorrow for a thorough inspection. This is my wife's daily driver and if no issue can be found we will be replacing the car as she would have been in extreme danger without steering, lights and ip, especially on a Saturday night driving through the city of detroit's I-94 expressway.

38 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/31/2019

While driving the vehicle it lost power steering. Warning lights came on stating power steering assist fault service advance trac terrain management system fault this is not new to Ford Explorers apparently there was a recall 2011-2014. My vehicle is a 2015. It is a shame that Ford or natsa would allow this risk to continue. I encourage you to recall any vehicles in all years to prevent accidents. My vehicle has been in the shop for a week already and when they told me three other Ford Explorers were fixed last week for the same problem I gasped that this is not part of a recall.

39 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

While driving on us highway 190 east, I lost full control of my steering without any warnings (lost of power steering). The vehicle lost power steering. Local repair shop indicated that the electrical power steering system failed and needs to be replaced.

44 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/29/2018

A knocking/popping noise could be heard when turning the steering wheel. It first started when turning the wheel to the right in reverse when the SUV was in motion. I brought it to my mechanic and he couldn't find the cause of the noise (no damage was visible). The noise became progressively worse over the next few months. The knocking/popping noise happened whenever the steering wheel was turned (left or right, forward or reverse, stationary or in motion). Then the power steering seized. This happened while driving 25 miles an hour on a secondary road. I was turning around a bend to the right and lost the power steering. There was no warning at all. Luckily, the power steering returned after a few seconds. I returned home and immediately scheduled service at my local Ford dealer. It took them five weeks to diagnose and fix the problem. The steering gear needed to be replaced. Since my 2015 Explorer XLT only had 29,000 miles on it, the mechanic tried to get Ford to cover the entire cost (bumper to bumper warranty expired, and this was not covered under powertrain warranty). Ford agreed to cover half, which tells me that they admit that the steering gear is defective, and shouldn't fail at 29,000 miles. This is a serious defect and Ford needs to issue a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed!.

45 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/12/2018

While attempting to turn from parking spots the power steering assist fault warning came on. Lost all power steering. The dealership said its the epas, electric power assisted steering.

46 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/05/2018

I was driving my 2015 Ford Explorer with approximately 34,200 miles 55-60 mph on us 141 in northern WI when I suddenly lost power steering and traction control. I had an alarm triggered and a fault warning on the dash indicating a steering fault and cleared by pressing the ok on the dash, but had very heavy steering and an indication that the traction control was off. I was able to get to a Ford dealer but they were no able to look at the car for several hours. They suggested I restart the car to see what would reset. The systems did reset and I was able to continue on my trip home without incident. No codes were triggered and I now have an appointment with my dealer to check out the problem. In searching the internet on Explorer steering problems, I noticed that there was a recall on steering loss for 2011-2014 Explorers and yet there are still many complains of steering loss for model years 2015 forward. It seems that this very dangerous issue has not been resolved.

47 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/23/2018

While driving w on m-81 highway 5 miles west outside cass city, ni. Suddenly lost power steering assist entering curve. . Vehicle departed onto gravel while trying to crank wheel ccw to get back in lane. . Then while trying to correct wheel cw to stay in westbound lane, vehicle crossed into eastbound lane before regaining control and reducing speed - power steering remained in manual mode until reaching home - no pre-warning, power assist disengaged upon display warning for "steering fault", "terrain management", and "advtraction". Would have been manageable if fault occured on straight road, but at entrance to curve at highway speed, was unable to have enough time to muscle vehicle under control. Bad situation if wife or daughter had been driving. Taking vehicle to dealership today, started up with power assist functional once again, still shows faults for terrain and traction control. Power steering should not disengage if a fault is detected in terrain management or traction control. No injuries, but some wrist strain in maneuvering the steering wheel under manual control. No medical treatment sought.

48 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/07/2018

I lose power steering when I turn the car on and have to turn it off and back on to regain power steering. This has occurred multiple times throughout the last few years.

49 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/31/2018

I have had the same problem for some time, and would normally be resolved by turning off the vehicle to reset the warning and turn back on and it would be fine. But today, the steering assist fault service soon warning came on and did not go off. And I have no power steering function in my Ford Explorer and the advance trac system fault warning also indicated. In the past I have had this happen while driving down a highway and loosing power steering function and have had it happen when pulling out of my garage and lost all power steering function and while driving at low speeds in a town area and lost all power steering function. There is a Ford recall for this exact problem in Ford Explorers years 2011-2013, but I believe this is the exact same issue I am having with my 2015 Ford Explorer.

50 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/30/2018

Complete loss of power steering while driving my Explorer. Was doing 70 on the highway. 65,000 miles on vehicle only have had the SUV for 2 years. 2300 to fix the problem. 51 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/25/2018

While driving at highway speed, the vehicle lost power steering control resulting in having to manually steer the vehicle. Warning lights for service power steering now, service advance trac, service stability control all came on at the same time. Vehicle was taken to a Ford dealer, diagnosed as epas steering rack as it is an integrated system. Was informed the vehicle was not covered under a recall which results in a $2000 repair, replacing the defective part with the same part that is subject to faure again.

52 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

I took my truck to the shop on Wednesday and dropped it off due to numerous lights coming on when driving. The light would read "steering fault service now, service advance trac and hill start assist not avalable". I took pictures of the lights when they would come on and have documentation of that. When the lights come on, I also lose power steering and am unable to drive my truck. This has almost caused me to have an accident! waldorf Ford just called me to tell me I need a new steering gear and that my epas system has gone bad and this is going to cost me $2100. 00 to fix. My truck is only 2 years old, I have maintained all service as needed since owning, it only has 49,000 miles on it and this has happened. I have looked online at the forums and see this is an ongoing problem with many Explorers and not just mine. These vehicles need to be recalled before someone is killed!!!!! this is extremely dangerous and a very expensive fix that to many people are having to pay for when it is occurring so often. Please, please check into this and put out a recall on not only the 2016 Ford Explorer but the other Fords who are experiencing the same issue as myself.

53 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/02/2018

Originally I had a light coming on when driving down the road saying "steering fault service now" it would come on and go off or occasionally I would have to pull over and restart my truck to reset. After about a week I started having multiple lines come on at one time flashing at me while driving saying "service advance trac, hill start assist not available, service advance trac and steering fault service now". When these lights come on I lose all power steering in my vehicle and I'm unable to steer at all. This has happened multiple times and it has become extremely unsafe to drive. It has always been while driving, but other than that I see no rhyme or reason or other factors that are the same when the lights have came on. I took my truck to my mechanic to look at and he found online that this is an issue many people are blogging about and complaining about. He hooked my truck up to the computer but could not get any type of error code to come back and suggested I follow up with Ford to have them look at it but also suggested that I contact someone to see if this has some type of recall because in his words "this is going to kill someone". I have checked but no recalls have been made as of now but did see there was a very similar problem in the 2011-2013 Explorers and a recall was made. I have an appointment this week for my truck to go to the Ford dealership to be looked at but feel strongly that this is something that needs to be recalled now on the 2016 Ford Explorer. I have 2 young drivers that occasionally drive my vehicle, if one of them were to drive it when the steering went out, I don't want to think what could have happened. This is to serious to ignore and I see to many complaints from other people online so I know this is not something that only I am going through. Please recall these vehicles and have this checked.

54 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/29/2018

My 2013 Ford Explorer lost the power steering as I was driving down the interstate. The steering started feeling inconsistent and then the warning light to service power steering came on along with traction control warning. I took it to the Ford dealership after talking to Ford customer service. This is what they recommended. The dealership said my vehicle is not part of the recall and that I would have to pay almost 1900. 00 to have the power steering fixed in my Explorer. This seems insane to me since there have been so many complaints of the same thing happening to so many Ford Explorers and escapes. I feel that my Explorer also was given a faulty part and should be replaced by Ford at no charge to me.

55 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/03/2018

Lost power steering while driving on a local street. Power steering came back the next day and lasted 3 days before going out again.

56 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/02/2018

After starting I noticed the steering very hard to turn. Almost like it had lost power steering. When turning, at first it is hard to turn, then becomes easy and then goes back to being hard to turn. Call my local dealership and wa stood some 2013 model years are covered and some not. If not covered, the cost to replace the electronic module would $1,800. 00. Very very dangerous to drive. How can some model year 2013 be covered on a recall and others not>.

57 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Steering rack assembly needed replacing for the second time within 14 months of each other (07/07/2016 and 09/19/2017). First time was at 37,100 miles, second time was at 59,853 miles. 59 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

Driving on small highway 55-60 mph. Dash warnings ding and flash power steering assist failure, terrain mangement system fault, service advance trac. Vehicle suddenly loses power steering and found it very difficult to make turn into parking lot. Restarted car hoping it was a glitch. . . I was low on wiper fluid and pressed ok. (seemed to happen immediately after pressing button on steering wheel). All was normal and drove home. This continued to happen after several days and would correct itself upon restarting car. I was lucky to be driving in light traffic. I have made arrangements to have vehicle diagnosed and repaired. After reading many complaints, I am suspecting the steering rack needs to be replaced.

60 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/09/2017

Console started flashing "service steering assist soon" and "traction assist failure". Would clear up when car restarted. Never lost steering during this 2 week time. July 9th, 2017, driving 70 mph on 405 freeway near long beach, CA, flashed "steering assist failure" and lost power steering. Traction assist failure light as well. Got though traffic, slowed down and exited without any power steering, stopped and restarted and issue went away. Called dealer and took car in the next morning. They reset codes and said "if it happens again bring it back in. " which scared me. 9 days later lost steering turning into work parking lot then lost steering 3 more times within 24 hours. Took to dealer and they had to replace the entire epas rack and pinion system for $1916. 79. The car had 46,7k miles and only highway driving. Outside of warranty as they don't consider this powertrain. Had I been in a turn or exit ramp off freeway would have been a crash for certain.

61 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2014 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/13/2017

Our 2014 Ford Explorer sport has suddenly lost its power steering making it very difficult to drive and has a tendency to jerk the wheel left and right when driving. This I'm told is not under warranty and will cost approximately $1800 to fix. I believe the three years prior to mine had the same problem and were recalled. The Explorer has not been in any accidents and has 73k miles. The airbag light also came on when the steering issue started however the Ford service department said that it was unrelated and that would be another expense after the steering was repaired.

63 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/05/2016

Lost power steering while driving. Traction control fault and terrain control fault came on. The steering box now needs to be replaced. I have codes c1b00-62, u2001, u0415, and the same issue that meets the requirements of recall 14s06, but my VIN is not in the data base for this. The recall specifically calls out vehicles from the chicago plant. 11th letter in my VIN shows it came from the chicago plant. Ford and the dealership refuse to consider this a recall item, I strong disagree with them.

70 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/12/2016

I recently received a 2016 Ford police utility (explorer) as a new patrol vehicle. While on patrol I suddenly lost power steering. I received a steering assist fault message on the dash, as well as a traction and stability control error message. The vehicle has 935 miles on it. I have read where Ford has had problems in the past with this steering system. As a police officer I am very concerned that the loss of power steering with no warning could result in a very dangerous situation for officers driving this vehicle, as well as civilians driving the civilian model. As of this complaint the vehicle is at the dealership waiting to be fixed. Ford needs to get this system working correctly.
