36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/13/2025

I own a 2022 Ford Explorer purchased in April 2025. Since purchasing the vehicle, I have experienced multiple defects affecting safety and normal use. The instrument cluster becomes foggy, making it difficult to clearly see my speed while driving. The infotainment screen intermittently malfunctions and affects the backup camera display, reducing rear visibility. I also experienced fuel contamination that was confirmed and repaired by the dealership. In addition, the rear hvac air vents close and do not provide airflow to the back seats. The vehicle has been taken to the dealership four separate times for different issues. Despite these repair attempts, the problems have continued or new issues have appeared. Due to the ongoing defects and safety concerns, I do not feel safe or confident operating this vehicle.

37 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/01/2025

Water pump failure, causing over heating in vehicle , not even 100,000miles. Causing to leave us stranded on the road. Apparently there's a lot of complains for this pump causing issues. Please look into this and start a recall process.

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/14/2025

Service advancetrac light came on while driving. Lost all propulsion and power steering. Almost went off road around a curve due to no power steering. Ford dealership diagnosed it as faulty steering sensor. Had that replaced about 18 months ago, now this near accident just happened. Service trac light traction control light are both on with no propulsion or power steering. I’ve been doing research on this and this seems to happen to a lot of Ford owners as Ford is the only manufacturer to produce vehicles with advancetrac system. How has this not been a recall yet?.

39 Other Fuel System problem of the 2023 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/04/2025

I have had 4 Ford Explorers that have the same problem that Ford has not commented on when I complain. If the car is parked facing down a hill with less than 1/4 tank of gas it won't start. The design of the tank precludes gas from reaching the engine. Unable to start the car, it cannot be brought out of park and rolled to a flat location. This time I had more than 1/4 of a tank and the same problem occurred. This happened in my driveway but what if you're on a street with an incline?.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/11/2025

My wife was driving the car all of a sudden the check engine light came on, and it started to flash on and off. The car started sputtering. She pulled over turned the car off and called me. I informed her to wait a little bit and restart the car. She did – and then the check engine light came on, but was no longer flashing, and a car started running as if no problem. I had the code checked out it is p0300 – which is an error code of random misfire detected in the engine. Fortunately, she was not evolved in an accident, even though she was traveling on the highway. I am taking it to the dealer as his recommended. This happened when the mileage on the odometer read 40,144.

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/17/2024

I have recently have experienced engine failure with the 2020 Ford Explorer 2. 3 ecoboost engine. I was driving on a 4 lane highway, specifically on a bridge, and I experienced loss of power and acceleration. At that time, the engine light came on. I managed to get home, with the vehicle seemed as if in limp mode. I had my vehicle towed to the Ford dealer ship. The service manager stated that they believe it is complete engine failure. He believes the failure is in the cylinder walls which is due to coolant intrusion in cylinders 2 and 3. His suggestion is to change the "long block" at the costs of $12,284,51. Also, he expressed a concern with the transmission. It might be an issue with the computer, or wire harness. Which would be $1091. 81. Plus, a couple sensors, spark plugs. In all the total repair costs are $16,904. 16. I owe about $9,500. Prior to this, in 2022 the turbo went out. It was replaced under the warranty at that time. This was at 90,000 miles. After doing some online research. There has also been a class-action lawsuit involving the 1. 5l, 1. 6l, and 2. 0l ecoboost engines. Owners of these engines reported issues such as coolant leaks leading to engine overheating and, in some cases, engine failure. The lawsuit claims that Ford was aware of these defects but did not take adequate steps to address them. There are some fantastic videos on youtube that explains and illustrates the reasons for the manufacture defect and engine failure. [xxx] I am a high mileage driver of highways and interstates. I understand that vehicles will have normal wear & tear. I now have 190,000 miles and no longer under warranty. However, based on my investigation, and other similar complaints about the 2020 Explorer with the same or similar issues, I believe there could be a defect with the cylinder head just like the other ecoboost engines. Other Ford Explorer owners will likely experience the same as the add miles information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/13/2024

There are problems with these items which are covered under a Ford recall. My vehicle is at liccardi Ford dealer in watchung NJ and I feel a tremendous resistance from the dealer to repair the recalled ordered repairs.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 12/12/2024

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that upon approaching the vehicle she smelled a strong odor of gasoline inside her inclosed garage, after which, she overserved gasoline leaking from underneath the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the fuel delivery module. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15v812000 (fuel system, gasoline), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 55,000.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

I have had this problem ever since we purchased this automobile on [xxx], when the car gets to a quarter tank of gas or a little less the dash monitoring system says there's 87 miles left till empty and you park this car on a hill or incline with the front end facing down the car will not start and everything shuts down. The only way to restart it is to put more gas from a can in it or go through a long process to takes two people to do to get the car on a level area then it will restart. I call the dealer abut it and they said there is no problem. The car had to be towed twice in the first few months we had it for this and as soon as they got it off the truck it would start and they do nothing about it. I call Fords hot line and they said they know about the problem but can't do anything about it , I was told that its a fuel pickup problem. Today [xxx] my wife when to the store this morning and the fuel gage said it had a quarter tank of gas in it and when she came out of the store the car would not start for her. I had to go and get a 5 gal. Can of gas and drive to where she was and put the gas in the car and after that the car started, she drove to the nearest gas station to fill it up. All I have been told to do by Ford and the dealer is to keep the gas tank full and fill it when it gets to half a tank. There is definitely a problem with this car and it needs to be addressed. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

The catalytic converters for the Ford Explorer utility police interceptor fail prematurely, degrading the emissions from the vehicle and causing the vehicle to fail emissions testing. Although Ford has implemented a customer satisfaction campaign 22m06, they do not inform owners of the campaign or potential problem. My car was inspected by two Ford dealerships who simply cleared the error code (p0430) and made no mention of campaign 22m06. The error code persisted as I replaced numerous other components (spark plugs, purge valve, oxygen sensors, mass air flow sensor) trying to alleviate the problem over the last year. Only if you mention the campaign specifically will they inspect the vehicle for the purpose of replacing the the catalytic converters under warranty. Replacing these failing catalytic converters should be a recall because failure creates substandard emissions for thousands of vehicles.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 08/26/2024

Driving on the highway heard large rattling noise coming from engine loss of power engine light came on battery light came on no acceleration cause to slow down on highway fortunately I was able to get to shoulder had it towed to service shop had p0012 code tensioner may have broken off on timing belt causing low oil pressure and causing engine rattling noise and engine shut down but service garage don’t do that type of work.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/23/2024

Check engine light came on. Code p0161 for O2 sensor heater circuit bank 2 sensor 2. Found massive corrosion at connector. This is the second like make/model/year vehicle we have seen this on. Mfg does not have pigtail repair kit available and entire harness would be needed to repair.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/08/2024

On July 8th while driving to work my car just shut off and the brakes locked up. This scenario happened again several other times even after being worked on at a Ford dealership. Please see attachment for specific dates & details. Fuel pump driver module was replaced first time then the fuel pump the last time. Explorer was inspected by the sandy sansing Ford dealership in daphne, alabama. Only time warnings/codes appeared was when it shut off. I attached a screen shot of what the dash showed.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/08/2024

Was trying to get gas and the door to the gas lid would not open. Waited for over an hour for someone to help me. Get the door open. Only had 10 miles to empty and the closest town is 20 miles.

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

August 22, 2024 Ford motor company customer relationship center p. O. Box 6248 dearborn, mi 48126 regarding: customer satisfaction program 24n01 I want to let you know how dissatisfied I am with your customer service claim to have happy satisfied customers, that is so proudly proclaimed in the introduction to this notice. We travel long distances in very remote areas of the southwest. The last thing I want is to be stranded in the hot desert with an axle bolt beginning to or actually failing. Your policy to notify us of a potential problem, but not repair until the bolt fails gives me no confidence in my vehicle. In fact I am reluctant to make this trip again in this vehicle that has a known parts failure issue. It would have been better to have not notified me of this concern, in which Ford has no intention of repairing until it fails. If the issue was only non critical, such as the chrome around the window operation buttons this process would be acceptable. However this issue has the potential for severe mechanical failure, resulting in dropping the driveline. The approach presented in this letter for this issue demonstrates a lack of customer service. At this point I am ready to sell this vehicle and purchase a different vehicle from a different manufacturer before taking another long distance trip in it.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/19/2024

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

On June 14, we drove our 2016 Ford Explorer from tallahassee, FL to boone, nc without issue. However, on June 17, upon starting the vehicle, we noticed a gasoline smell. Concerned for our safety, we checked the car before leaving the neighborhood and discovered fuel pouring from the front. We parked the vehicle in a safe location and coordinated a tow to the local Ford dealership and were informed our fuel line had ruptured. The vehicle had 41,000 miles at the time of the incident. We were not given a clear explanation for the fuel line rupture, leaving us apprehensive about the safety and reliability of Ford vehicles. The ordeal cost $4,000 in repairs, and the service experience made us feel taken advantage of after we were routinely asked if we were local. Our Ford mechanic in tallahassee later mentioned that labor charged by the boone dealership seemed excessive. Additionally, they refused to replace the gasoline-covered cabin air filter and engine cover, raising further concerns about the service provided. The rupture of the fuel line posed a severe safety risk as it could have led to a fire or explosion, endangering the lives of the occupants and others nearby. The problem has not been reproduced but was confirmed by the local Ford dealership. No inspections have been conducted by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives to our knowledge. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Our gas tank was nearly full the morning of June 17, and it was empty when we picked it up from the Ford dealership after repairs were completed. Given the serious nature of the fuel line failure, the potential risks involved, and the financial burden of the repairs, we believe this issue warrants a recall investigation to prevent future incidents and to ensure the safety of Ford customers, especially given the multiple recalls already issued and the shared “significant safety concern” shared by the NHTSA on this.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 06/06/2024

Muffler tailpipe separated at the wield of the muffler.

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/29/2024

The power transfer unit is broken. Symptoms are vehicle shuddering, vehicle sounds like it is going to stall. This could cause a major accident at any moment.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

Vehicle "service required" light (wrench) displayed on vehicle when commuting from work to home on a Friday. Light went off next time vehicle was used, so vehicle was used to commute from home to work. During this commute, light came on approximately 25 miles from home, and then 25 miles from work (commute is 32 miles 1 way). Driver stopped vehicle and once vehicle turned off, light went off. Local dealership was contacted (ryan) was able to diagnose issue over computer, stating 1. The vehicle (parts are not communicating with each other) and then the light is from transmission pump overheating. He stated this is common (transmission issue) with 2020 Ford Explorers. I did research and this is correct. We agreed to bring vehicle in to be checked out instead of driving it any further. I also asked if any dealer vehicles were having issues filling up fuel at the local gas station (they fuel all vehicles there), since recently the gas pump would stop filling after 2-3 gallons when vehicle was further empty. I said this has happened 3-4 times in the last few weeks (vehicle is filled up 2x a week). Upon review, ryan found 2 TSB (bulletins) for the vehicle and explained these are again issues with this vehicles. 1-TSB 20-2337 automatic transmission clutch, coolant pump. 2-TSB-22-2433 fuel filler neck and housing for the fuel filling system. I have contacted number given by previous service manager (jim) 1-800-392-3673 and either customer service personnel where: upset I received this number, stating this is a dealership only number to call them. Finally given the information since vehicle was fixed/corrected prior to contacting them (dealership personnel requirement) they were not able to help-stating the department helps in financial situations only. Phone calls to the above number 3-5 times. I research and found a general number for Ford (866-436-7332), getting case cas49857851. Cust. Service specialist amber told me they will not help and to contact.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 04/09/2024

The recall to replace the rear axle bolt was completed and new boil installed. They left the automatic emergency brake program engager which results in the vehicle lurching forward or backward when shifted into gear and results in collisions with other vehicles as the collision detection system is not working.

60 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 03/20/2024

The vehicle looses power occasionally. When the accelerator is pressed it can take a second or 2 to start moving again. It happens when turning, changing lanes or going straight. I could be pulling into traffic and it will stop moving, even if the gas pedal is pressed down all the way. It will happen in every drive mode and when the traction control is off. The only time it hasn't happened yet is when I turn off the advanetrac stability control. I have to hold down the traction control button for 5 seconds every time I start the vehicle. The dealer said they couldn't find the problem. The associate said it's a common issue with the Explorer's. It is very dangerous.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 02/08/2024

I need a new gas tank for my vehicle and Ford stopped making the gas tank for my vehicle. That is a very big safety issue. I called Ford and they were helping to find one from junkyard's I don't want one from a junkyard that I have to repair. I asked for Ford to make a gas tank or pay for them to have mine fixed right at a Ford dealership, no help. That's a big safety problem.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/17/2024

The fuel sending unit goes bad due to the split tank and differential and drive train have to be taken apart and dropped in order to change. Costing over $1,000. 00. You can not go under half a tank of gas and if you do you just run out of gas immediately causing you to stop on highways side roads etc. Its very dangerous to have a vehicle that will just all of a sudden run out of gas and no one is paying to get them fixed because of the pricepoint charged to repair. This is Fords faulty work 1000%.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, an unknown warning message and light illuminated. The contact pulled to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. The contact waited 4 hours for the vehicle to cool down and then refilled the vehicle with coolant before successfully restarting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to 3 different independent mechanics to be diagnosed, however, the same water pump failure was given by each independent mechanic. The vehicle was repaired by the most recent independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/23/2023

Strong egg odor from exhaust when temperature is below 0 degrees c or 32f. This is especially the case then the car is started and left to warm up for 5-10 min. The smell goes away after 15-20min.

65 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/17/2023

Apparently Ford is aware that there is a know issue with the Ford Explorer water pump failure which is causing water pump leakage inside engine mixing coolant and oil. This has been reported by thousands of consumers who are faced with an average cost of about $3000 to get this resolved. This should be considered a recall.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 11/08/2023

Adding gas to my Ford Explorer 2020 limited ecoboost 4wd, is almost impossible. We just purchased this vehicle used in November 2023. No matter what gas station we use, no matter how slow we fill, the nozzle continuously clicks off every few seconds. We use the funnel that came with the vehicle & the gasoline consistently spills out along the side of the vehicle. The only way to get gas in the tank is with the funnel at the slowest fill possible. When the tank is on the fuller side, it sloshes around incredibly loud & there’s also a knocking sound on the driver side under the steering wheel area. I’ve looked online & have seen so many others that have these same issues. Took the car back to the dealership, they attempted to fill up the tank themselves and were just as confused as I was on how difficult it was to fill the tank.

67 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/12/2023

My 2020 Explorer st has been in the shop off and on for three months. The engine had to be replaced at about 45k miles. The transmission whines. The latest issue occurred while driving in downtown chicago. I was coming up on a light and moved to the left turn lane to turn into oncoming traffic. When I went to go - I pressed the pedal and nothing happened. I ended up rolling into oncoming traffic when finally, the vehicle responded. On the way home this happened about 10 times on the interstate. It would happen when you quickly decelerate and then accelerate after the transmission downshifted. The loss of responsive ness lasted about 5-10 seconds each time and was accompanied by a loud clicking sound under the vehicle. It is still at the dealership and waiting to hear back from them.

68 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

The car would not accelerate after leaving a light. I had just exited the freeway and the gas pedal would not respond and I was stuck in the middle of a 4 lane highway. A yellow warning wrench appeared on the dash and then a check engine light. The error code is p2111 stating the throttle body stuck open.

69 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

Throttle body --- I have ask the dealer to provide the defective part for my inspection. Driving on the 15 freeway in southern California. My wife was driving and had just picked up speed and merged into the fast land. There was a sudden pop or clunk and the SUV immediately lost power and would not accelerate. She had to exit to the right of the freeway while losing power and no acceleration. She was traveling at less than 5 miles an hour in 60 plus traffic. There was only a narrow strip of shoulder with a "k" rail that was on the shoulder above a deep drop off on the side of the freeway. She was able to avoid getting hit and make it to the exit with enough of a shoulder for her to pullover safely. The SUV was taken to the Ford dealer where the throttle body was diagnosed as being defective. There was no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms before the issue on the freeway.

70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 Ford Explorer

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

The vehicle was self accelerating and applying forward propulsion. It was behaving as if the cruise control was on, cruise control was verified off. When braking was applied an alert was posted on the dash stating braking applied, power reduced and the engine would rev higher. Upon stopping the vehicle and letting off on the brake the vehicle would accelerate as if the gas pedal was depressed. Upon parking the vehicle the engine would rev up to 6k rpm and if I let go of the brake the vehicle would accelerate. Turing off the vehicle and turning the vehicle on did not reset the issue. I verified no inadvertent pressure was being applied to the gas pedal and have video demonstrating the failure. The videos I have are too large to upload via your limitations on this page.
