Fuel tank leak. Heavy odor of gasoline when tank full. Independent mechanic checked for cause and observed residue around the tank where gasoline had escaped from top of tank. Ford dealership did a diagnosis and subsequent repair, finding that gasket, on top of the tank at the sending unit/fuel pump had cracked, allowing gasoline and fumes to escape. The position is in immediate proximity of the vehicle exhaust pipes. - repaired by Ford dealership as an absolute necessity for safety, to avoid a potential fire from gasoline dripping on exhaust pipes either while in motion or parked.

When stopping, moving slow or pulling into a parking spot or garage you can hear and feel the fuel in the tank sloshing back and forth. This happens when the fuel tank is at least 1/2 full and is very noticeable but seems to go away when fuel is under 1/2 tank.

When parking vehicle or backing out of garage slowly, you hear fuel sloshing under the front seats like there is no baffle in the tank. Very very noticeable and also mentioned on this site from other Ford owners. A TSB should be issued by Ford immediately as they did for the same issue with TSB 18-2378. This is not a normal condition and it's a cop out for Ford not to address this problem that they have had in other Ford products and this one now as well!!.
Vehicle will not start when parked on driveway w/ nose facing street if there is less than about a quarter of a tank of gas in it. When tried to many times the dash reads cranking limit exceeded. Vehicle was towed to dealership - 2021 loaner was provided and the same issue happened. Dealership also advised they had another customer with a 2021 Explorer have the same issue a week prior. Was told to park my car in street and not use driveway or to always have more than a quarter tank of gas. These are not acceptable answers.
When starting at intersections or stopping you can hear and feel the fuel in the tank sloshing back and forth. I've taken my vehicle to the dealership and they confirmed the noise and documented it. They reached out to Ford which said they knew of the issue and at this time there is no fix.
Fuel tank sloshing and clunking noise underneath the driver and passenger seats. The vehicle fuel tank design locates a portion of the gas tank under the vehicle and below the seats. When the gas tank is above half full, you can hear and feel the gas moving in the tank, especially at low speed, during traffic with frequent stopping. Not sure how safe is to feel the gas moving inside the fuel tank and the noise when the gas impacts the gas tank walls. When the tank is full and you brake, the fuel sloshes forward and moves something inside and slams against the inside of the tank.
The fuel tank has a gap between the place you fill up gas from gas leaking still. The wheels make a popping sound when you make sharp turns.

The fuel gauge on the instrument panel is reading that the fuel tank is almost full, however while driving the low fuel warning sensor came on and we nearly ran out of fuel. The gauge was still reading almost full. We barely made it to a gas station. After putting in a full tank of gas, the fuel gauge was showing a completely full tank. Since then, the gauge is always showing almost completely full and will go down only to almost full, not quite as low as 3/4 full tank, even if you have driven over 300 miles. Now we have to re-set the trip odometer every time we get gas, so we can calculate approximately how many miles we have driven since the fuel gauge only goes down slightly below full. This occurred around 50,000 miles.

Fuel leaking from under car near gas tank.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the engine warning indicator illuminated and a fuel odor emitted through the vents. The vehicle was taken to santos Ford (617 w pacheco blvd, los banos, CA 93635, (888) 312-2705) and code: p0456 was located. The dealer stated that there was a small leak coming from the rear end and the fuel tank was fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 15v812000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, the repaired did not correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.
When I fill up the tank the miles varies every time. Also, there is a smell in the car when I drive. I have to open the windows to get rid of the smell.

Noticed a month after purchase of new car, cabin filled up with gas smell entering freeway. Spoke to car salesman. (had just filled car with gas & w/capless system I connected the dots, thought that's why it happened & spoke to salesman. Then next time I had to rev the engine to accelerate/pass, it happened with 1/4 tank gas. Sent a ps to salesman 11/29/16 thru email. He said it takes the car 3k-5k mi. To break in. I just tried not to get on freeway, only drove it around town. We used my hubby's truck for freeway. This weekend, went to nephew's bb game on 2 lane 42 mile rd. Had to pass slow car in front of me--car had such a gas smell, I got a sore throat from it and had to roll down windows to breathe. I was shocked it happened again. Looked up on internet what I could find and was horrified at the pgs. And pgs. Of comments regarding this issue and class action lawsuit as well for 2011-2015's. I have a new 2016 with 4200 mi. My heart aches for all these hundreds of families with sm. Kids while CO and carcinogenic gases are coming thru the vents and no one is doing anything about it. I saved for a long time to buy this vehicle. My ex and I have bought 10 Ford's. I'm devastated that this expensive car (for me) is slowly killing me. Look at the classaction. Org, tons of comments. Look at carproblemszoo. Com, tons of comments. They had so many they needed a part 1 and part 2. If you go to 2016 Ford owner comments, they are there too. I downloaded approx. 50 pages of owners' comments with the same prob. The vast majority had no resolution. I'm so sad. Somebody needs to take care of these problems. I don't understand why there hasn't been a recall. Someone is dropping the ball. I guy started to pass out while he was driving but managed to pull over. Service mgr. Called-- scheduling my car tomorrow-6 pgs. Of TSB to go thru. We'll see.
This is a brand new Explorer 2017 with less than 700 miles. I had two problems; the first one is serious. 1)this happened with me twice; where there was a fuel leaking from the car to the ground when I filled the car. I believe this is very dangerous and not safe to drive with a full tank. I believe that if the car roles over in an accident it is going to catch fire I will try to go to the dealership today to fix the problem. 2) the gas mileage in this car is very disappointing. The manufacturer claimed that mpg is 16/22, but unfortunately it is less than 13 in city. I am very disappointed.
Accelerator issue - Ford Explorer limited 2016: upon initial acceleration through an intersection (man-o-war/todd's rd. Lexington, ky) and reaching approximately 10mph the vehicle failed to accelerate then began coasting. After four or five attempts to push the accelerator, the engine (2. 4l) revved and the vehicle began gaining speed with no further problems. The vehicle was clearly in drive, had a full tank of gas and has only 3500 miles on odometer. Upon notifying roadside assistance this date, the individual answering the call stated this is a common problem with new Ford Explorers.
The electrical on my vehicle is bad. My radio lights flash, none of my doors open from te inside and only roll down windows from diver switcth; gas gayge only reads empry although I j ust put 30 dollars in the tank.

We've replaced the fuel sensor in our 2005 Ford Explorer XLT twice in the past two years. We had 68,000 miles when we first replaced the fuel sensor. It is a costly fix. Now, August 2017, the fuel sensor is not working and our service engine soon light is on. This is a safety issue because we never know how much gas we have in the tank. The gas goes up and down and is not reliable. The computer never states the correct number of miles till emply. I'll be driving along and the gauge goes down to empty and the computer states -------.

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there had been strong fumes of fuel emitting on the exterior and coming into the interior of the vehicle as the failure progressed. The contact was able to further inspect the vehicle and noticed that the fuel line prematurely fractured with no warning. The mechanic removed the fuel tank and noticed that there was a crack in the fuel line thru the flex line that linked to the fuel rails . The vehicle was to be repaired. The VIN was not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000. Dyd.

In the last two weeks the fuel gauge will go from full( when the tank is full)to empty then the low fuel alert continues to sound. . . . Today apri 16 2015 the truck started sputtering then shut off in the middle of a highway at 65mph. . . . . It started after 3 tries I took it to gas station and it's full of gas but gauge says it's empty . . . . . This isn't safe . . . . . My 2 yr old could have been in an accident. . . . Why isn't it being recalled ? if you google the problem it's up to $2000 to fix and everyone is having this problem but no investigation or recall.
Filled tank to full (automatic shut off). When I started car the next time, gas gauge read empty and check engine light was on. I have had the malfunction of gauge before and has always come back after a few miles, but never light. After getting error light read, it is determined to be a faulty fuel sensor. This can be a safety hazard as there is no way for the vehicle to display the fuel correctly when the sensor malfunctions. I make sure not to overfill the tank as Ford warns that this could be an issue, which should have been fixed (not just that they know it can happen). Even by following the manufacturer's precautions, the part still failed.
Cannot fill gas tank without nozzle or pump constantly shutting off. Have to bearly squeeze nozzle and trickle the gas in. Takes 10 times longer to fill tank than it should. Sounds like a very common problem with older Fords.
The contact rented a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while refueling, the fuel leaked to the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 34,600.
The contact owns a 2011 Ford Explorer. When the fuel tank was filled to capacity, the fuel gauge indicated only a half of a tank. The contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated after the fuel tank was full. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,000.
Since ive owned my 2014 Ford Explorer for the past six months I get sulfur smelling exhaust fumes coming from the a/c vents when quickly accelerating even if the a/c is in recirc mode and even when the fuel tank is not full. It is definately exhaust odors and not fuel odors.

Vehicle gas tank was filled. Fuel gauge showed 3/4 full - after a brief drive (less than 20 miles) vehicle was started and fuel gauge showed less than half a tank. Vehicle was put in shop for repair. On 9/17 - it was picked up on 9/20 - truck was filled up again on 9/23 and fuel gauge again showed 3/4 full.
As I was driving I-10 westbound in houston there was a very loud definitive explosion in the area of the gas tank on my 2013 Ford Explorer. I immediately lost power and coasted to the hazard lane. The fire trucks arrived and the firemen applied putty to all of the leaks around the fuel tank. It was confirmed that all of my fuel had dumped out immediately during the explosion preventing further damage and fire. Just having filled my gas tank, I feel lucky to be alive right now. I am really at a loss of words as to why Ford motor company and the dealer mac haik Ford did not notify me of the fuel tank leak recall, especially since the vehicle was just in the service department at mak haik less than a week ago. I had clearly requested that all recalls that may be applicable to this vehicle be ascertained prior to releasing it to me.
Thee have been ongoing issues with the fuel system dating back to 2009 fuel system solenoid and vent. It has been repaired at least three to four times for the exact same repair and the same parts every time. The fuel system does not allow the gas tank to be filled at a normal rate. It takes as long as 45 seconds sometimes to put one (1) gallon of gas in the tank. It can take well over 10 minutes to fill the gas tank sometimes. I have tried to deal with customer service representatives at Ford and they have been of no assistance whatsoever.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle emitted a strong gasoline fuel odor. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and inspected. The failure was located at the fuel tank, which was leaking fuel. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 13v109000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure and current mileage was 10,500.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Explorer. While refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed out of the fuel tank as if it were full. The contact stated that fuel spilled onto his clothing and the vehicle. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
It has become increasing more difficult to fuel the vehicle. The pump clicks as if the tank is full as soon as the fueling begins and take a long time to fill the tank as you have to continually push the trigger on the gas pump because it keeps shutting as if the tank is full.

"check engine" light came up, but the car did not show any difference in performance. I took to advanced auto and they said the "gas tank sensor failed". I checked with a local mechanic and he said it would be major job and could take more than 6 hours labor the estimate was over $1000. But the car is running fine, but the "check engine " is on constantly and it goes off when the tank is almost empty. When I put gas, it come back on again and stays on. Gas tank needle drops to empty suddenly and it goes up again. I checked with midas auto repair and they checked and said the same problem of gas sensor failure. It is annoying to see the check engine light always on, but the car seems to run fine. Any cheaper way to get this fixed? I don't have any mechanical skills, other than changing the air-filer. I think Ford should fix this free of charge.
Filled up the gas tank the day before and now the gas meter on the dashboard reads empty. I know there's gas on the car. Now the "service engine soon" lights appears on the dashboard. I'm afraid to drive the it since I don't know how much gas it really has. The info button tells me how many miles I have to the gallon but how sure is that information is if the "service engine soon" is on. I reached online to find I am not the only person with the same issue with this vehicle. Come to find the repair is pricey. This should be a recall!!!!! no one is safe while drive a vehicle that shows false information on the dashboard.
Filled up the tank and it registered no fuel, bad fuel sensor.
