Steering loss on highway two times but came back and a squealing noise when trying to park some times found out there isn't a power steering pump so don't know where the squealing noise is coming from but it is in the steering had the Ford dealer check it out and they said it needs replaced.

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at 35-40 mph, the vehicle started to jerk back and forth while making turns in either direction. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. After test driving the vehicle, the mechanic informed the contact that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. A dealer was not notified of the failure. The contact referenced the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14v286000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,000.
Received a message on my dashboard " power assist fault", the steering was stiff and could not turn. Turn off the car for 10 minutes and the steering was functioning ok. Later in the afternoon, I was about to hit the gas pump as my steering went stiff again. Now am scared that this may cause accident.
The electrical steering control module went out on my car (63k miles) and has been replaced by the dealer at my cost for $3300. When driving down the road at any speed, worse at freeway speeds, the car started grinding while switching lanes and turning without any fault lights on. It did not feel like a safety issue but was scary as hell. When parked and I would turn the wheel it would make a clunking noise. I got it home and stopped driving it until I could get in to an appointment at the dealer a couple days later. They explained that they had to replace the entire steering rack because the pieces of the rack are not serviceable - 3k after the warranty runs out - how convenient for Ford! then I go digging online and find they have recalled this unit in other Explorers and escapes but not the 2014. Bogus! I have never owned a car where the steering went out, but know damn well a new steering pump or mechanicals in a hydraulic system would be $200-$500 max. . Read more...

I had stopped to get gas and once I returned to the car and put it in gear it made a horrible sound and the steering went out and I could hardly move the wheel. Turned the car back off and waited a few minutes, turned it back on and still no power steering. Luckily for me my husband was still in town and he had to come and drive the car to the dealer since I could not turn it at all to even move it away from the gas pump. The repair bill was $1,800 for something that should not be going out on a less that 5 year old vehicle that cost close to $30,000! I just feel blessed that my daughter and I were not actually driving down the road when it went out like others have complained about.
Was driving and the steer well became lock couldn't turn the wheel, tried to pump the brakes and they didn't catch. End up driving right into a pole and the airbags didn't deploy with everyone hitting their heads and kids getting concussions.

I have had this truck for ruffly 3yrs. When I first bought the car something was wrong with it immediately. . . . I was driving to the mail box after getting home from about a 30min trip. The whole car cut off lights were dim in the car, steering had locked very hard to turn. . . Automax in killeen took the car in for service. Had the new purchased truck for a month and 2 days. Their service team told me it was the battery. I felt other wise and no longer wanted the car. But of course by this time all paperwork had went through to the bank. . . . . . Drove the truck fine for about 8months, then broke down the same way as the very first time but on a bridge this time. . . . . . This time around I was told it was the engine, got a second opinion, said person said water pump. I fixed the water pump. Now guess what??? its actually the engine. . . . I am blown away by how many problems I have had with this Ford Explorer. . . . . I thought I was making a great purchase going with a Ford. This truck sat in the driveway for a year while in nursing school. . . . . I am lost and at my wits end. . . . . When I look for recalls all I am seeing is suspension issues or towing. . . . When I talk to mechanics they say these models are know for bad engines, thus is another reason why the 2011 Ford Explorer engines are more expensive. . . . . I am looking for help. Has anyone else had these same issues. I owe 14000 still on this truck and how could it need a new engine already?.
The contact owns a 2002 Ford Explorer. While driving at approximately 55 mph, the transmission shifted from third gear to fourth gear independently and the vehicle decelerated. The vehicle made an abnormal noise and the engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the transmission was burned out and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, a snapping sound emitted from the vehicle and the steering wheel became hard to turn. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician diagnosed that the power steering pump was defective which prevented it from holding the fluid damaging the anti-brakes system. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000. The VIN was not available.

My vehicle burned through another alternator, everything on the vehicle is 100% factory so I don't know what is causing that. Immediately after I replaced the alternator for the second time in 6 months, the power steering has vanished. I checked all the belts made sure everything is running properly and in the correct place. The power steering pump seems to be pumping but not working.

The power steering pump quit working 2 times on my mothers SUV. Vehicle was taken to Ford twice because they did not fix it the first time. Saw recall but Explorer was not in the list. I am a mechanical engineer and was driving the vehicle on both occurences. It is my ethical resposibility to report this issue. I also work in automotive field and I know this was a failure of the power steering. I do not want my mother or any individual hurt due to lack of investigation. I expect a response from your organization. The dealership can pull up all info, a rental was provided. I was barely able to manage the vehicle to the side of the road, a weaker driver, physically, would have had an accident.

I was starting to back out of a parking lot and the stabilitrac lights came on. The steering got tight and there was little movement to turn the wheel right or left. I pulled a few feet back in the parking stall, turned the car off, and restarted it again. Everything seemed fine for a mile or so and the lights came back on. I could barely turn the wheel. I got a tow to the dealership. They had to order and replace the steering pump. This happened a second time three days ago, on 7/2/12. The dealership had to again replace the steering pump. I have no confidence that this will not happen again. This second time I had my two 7-year-olds in the car and was traveling about 40mph down a major street. The same lights came on and the steering wheel tightened. I could barely turn the wheel. Luckily I was close to home, but still had to make 5 turns. I was turning the steering wheel so hard that I felt like I was going to break it. It took all my arm strength to make the turns. I would turn the signal on and it would blink once and go off also. It is scary when it happens and as mentioned, I have no faith that it won't happen again. And this vehicle is just now a year old.
In the evening, I was about half an hour from home when I pulled up to a gas pump at a station and attempted to put the vehicle into park. I did not do anything different than normal. The steering gear shift broke off into my hand. It was attached by a wire. I could not tell what happened except that it was broken off off the steering column. The service department of the dealership was closed but the receptionist said that the vehicle could be left at the service department lot overnight and they would take a look at it the next day. I drove to the dealership holding the piece in my right hand as I did not know what would happen if it became unattached from that wire. I felt scared that something was going to happen such as a fire, turn completely off in traffic, etc. I didn't know what was going to happen next. I got to the dealership, set the emergency brake and turned off the ignition. I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. I had no choice but to leave my vehicle there with key in the ignition. I emptied as much of my stuff from the car as I could as I was worried that there could be some type of criminal activity overnight. Thankfully, it was there the next morning but unfortunately the cost of repair is over $1,500. The service advisor said the only way to fix this is to replace the entire steering column. This is all out of pocket costs. I am thankful that the dealership does provide free loaners and that this happened in a place where I could exit the location and make it to the dealership. The cost to repair, the stress that this caused, the fact that this is a known defective part, and the possibility of this happening again are all not good.
First incident: parked car at gas station fuel pump, when we got in to move the car it did not have power steering. Wrestled the car to the front of the gas store and went inside, when we retuned to the car and started it, the power steering worked. Second incident: July 18,2014, same thing happened after a stop at a store. Power steering completely out advance track light stays on. Had to get towed. Fix took four week work days. The invoice says eb5z*3504*a gear asm-steering was replaced.
2002 Ford Explorer shifter broke off in hand while at gas pump. The part that broke is what the shift handle connects to and is not replaceable. Ford says I must purchase the entire steering column in the amount of $871. 70. I have read all over the internet that thousands of other Explorer owners have experience that same problem. Ford list the part number. 3c529.
- the contact stated that while driving the 1998 Ford Explorer at approximately 15 mph she heard a rubbing noise coming from the left front of the vehicle. She did not receive any warning lights, and the road conditions were clear. Suddenly, it became very hard to turn the steering wheel and she had no control of the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership informed the contact that the power steering pump failed, and it released debris into the rack and pinion, which caused that to fail. The vehicle was being repaired by the dealership. The vehicle currently has 65042 miles. Updated 04/12/07.

Left side tensioner has been recalled for same reason that right side failed. It is the same piece of equipment and failed for the same reasons yet it has not been recalled yet.
Tensioner that keeps belt tight sheared off causing loss of belt tension and loss of power stearing. Lucky that car was in driveway at the time. (engine was at idle). Tensioner fell to the driveway. Was putting grand babies in the car in preparation for making a trip. Could have been a catastrophe if the event had happened a few minutes later while driving at highway speed.
